WWE’s Real Role for the Divas?

For years, I’ve been hearing about how it’s a no-no for lower-card wrestlers to score a date with a Diva and for years, I’ve never really, whole-heartedly believed it. Surely, a publicly funded company wouldn’t be so sexist? Surely they couldn’t be so disgusting and vulgar? They can and they are.

Former Diva Torrie Wilson‘s beau, ex-Spirit Squad wrestler, Nick Mitchell reveals how he had heat on him after he began dating Torrie in a recent profile piece on local Houston news. The following recap is from PWTorch:

Mitchell, who had the “stain” of being a Tough Enough contestant and was part of the Spirit Squad group in 2006, says politics held him down, especially because he ended up with Torrie Wilson.

“There’s a lot of politics in WWE. I was a young, fresh meat WWE guy who ‘didn’t deserve’ the most beautiful diva,” Mitchell told ABC’s Tim Melton in-between camera shots of him training.

Like I said, I never whole-heartedly believed the rumours even though through the years, there have been murmurings about similar situations. It seems as though the Divas are generally ‘reserved’ for top level Superstars; it never ceases to amaze me how much WWE can get away with in this day and age, the backstage side of things is still stuck in the dark ages.

Women have a hard enough time being taken seriously in the wrestling industry, but it’s almost as if there’s a mentality of the Divas being whores, essentially, for their top level stars to have their pick of. And God help you if you’re a Nick Mitchell, Paul London or Ken Doane!
