Going Halloween Costume Shopping: TNA & Lucha Underground

Happy Halloween! We’re celebrating our eighth anniversary of dreaming up Halloween costumes for the women of wrestling. This year, we’ll be splitting up the women into three categories: NXT, TNA/Lucha Underground and WWE.

But before you see this year’s picks, be sure to catch up on the past seven years of this feature:

For the second part of our feature, we have the TNA Knockouts and the women of Lucha Underground:

Angelina Love, Madison Rayne & Velvet Sky as The Dollhouse

The feud between these factions may have cooled down recently, but there’s no way TNA’s original mean girl group wouldn’t like to deliver one of the oldest wrestling disses in the book: dressing up like your foes to mock them. Picture it: Angelina as Taryn, Madison as Marti and Velvet as Jade, entering the Impact Zone slowly and seductively while “Doll Parts” blares. Now that would be a picture perfect way to reignite this feud.

Awesome Kong as May Day from A View to a Kill

May Day stands out amongst the sea of villainous henchman in the James Bond universe not only for the timeless cool she exudes or her jaw-dropping strength, but for her eventual redemption. In A View to a Kill, she turns over a new leaf, becoming the hero of the story in a spoilerific way we won’t reveal here. Similarly, Awesome Kong, known best for her fearsome mean streak, returned to TNA this year as a babyface, allowing her to show a different side of herself and challenging fans’ notions of what a female wrestler of her size and power can be. Dressed in May Day’s signature color-lined hood and leather, Kong would remind us that leaving the dark side isn’t always a drag.

Brooke as Wonder Woman from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

Granted, at 5’4″, Brooke’s no Amazon, but you wouldn’t know it by the energy and power she displays in the ring. By portraying the darker, edgier Wonder Woman as seen in the upcoming Batman v. Superman, she could avoid the more cartoony, lasso-of-truth wielding side of the canon and get straight to the ass kicking. Just try and keep up, Batman and Superman.

Christy Hemme as Hope van Dyne/The Wasp from Ant-Man

Hope isn’t The Wasp in the MCU just yet, but we all know it’s coming. Christy could tap into her “ball of energy” Diva Search roots and don Hope’s future uniform in all its retro glory: wings, leather and a jet black bob. We don’t yet harness the power to shrink humans, but surrounding Christy with giant teacups and sugar cubes would make for one hell of an America’s Next Top Model photoshoot, wouldn’t it?

Dixie Carter as Kathy Beale from EastEnders

How many times has TNA nearly “closed its doors”? Can you remember how many reports have been released stating TNA’s loss of TV deals will be the final nail in the company’s coffin? There’s no question: Dixie Carter knows how to resurrect TNA from the dead… or rather, near-dead.
Who else is pretty notable for coming back from the dead? UK soap opera fans know wel that Kathy Beale is an expert. The beloved EastEnders original was on screen from the show’s start in 1985 until 2002, and was then killed off-screen in 2006. Fast forward to February 2015 and the show’s 30th anniversary special: Kathy comes back from the dead! Long story short, that husky voice and meek attitude made a shock return, just when you thought it was impossible. Who does that remind you of?

Gail Kim as Daredevil from Daredevil

Ever since she returned from the injury she sustained at the hands of The Dollhouse, Gail has been a force to be reckoned with, her look and penchant for blackout ambushes calling to mind the vigilantes of the superhero world. Her skill acrobatics and stealth make her a perfect match for Daredevil, the blind vigilante doing battle in the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen. She may have already cleaned up the Knockouts division, but if comic books have taught us anything, it’s that the next big bad is just around the corner.

Taryn Terrell, Jade, Marti Bell & Rebel as Taylor Swift and her “squad” in the “Bad Blood” music video

There’s something about having a group of friends at your beck and call that makes you look villainous – just ask Regina George. Taryn, with just three Knockouts at her command, has nothing on Taylor Swift, but considering the small size of the Knockouts division, she isn’t doing too bad for herself. Taryn’s always eager to demonstrate her power, so why not emulate Taylor Swift and her “squad” from the action-packed music video for “Bad Blood”? While seeing The Dollhouse kicking ass wouldn’t be all that new, seeing them do it dressed in all black certainly would be.

Black Lotus as Elektra from Daredevil

Black Lotus’s origin story, with her dead family, unquenchable thirst for revenge and brutal combat training might as well have been lifted from Elektra’s own beginnings, so it would make perfect sense for her to tip her hat to her spiritual twin by donning the classic red uniform and pair of bladed sai she made famous. We don’t yet know much about how Elektra will be portrayed in the next season of Daredevil, but we have a feeling her story won’t be nearly as explosive as Lotus’s revenge arc is bound to be.

Catrina as Poison Ivy

Catrina’s famous “lick of death” isn’t literal, but given her successes in the first season of Lucha Underground, it might as well be. Much like comic book villain Poison Ivy, she uses seduction to lull foes into a false sense of security and lead them to their doom. In that way, Catrina is very much the wrestling version of Ivy, poised to become Lucha Underground’s archvillain without so much as raising a fist. And really, is a magic rock and resurrection that big of a leap when compared to using pheromones for mind control?

Ivelisse as Jessica Jones from Jessica Jones

The hard drinking, tough as nails superhero-turned-private-detective won’t make her television debut until next month, but from what we’ve seen of Jessica Jones so far, it looks like her investigate skills and street smarts will be just as integral to her survival as her superhuman abilities. Ivelisse has demonstrated all of that and more in the first season of Lucha Underground, going from a manipulative manager to a Trios Champion, wrestling through injury and battling men with a level of guts and toughness that’s rare to find in mainstream women’s wrestling. With this level of resilience, perhaps she could even give the Purple Man a run for his money.

Sexy Star as the female Thor

While her identity has already been revealed (no spoilers here!), the mysterious new female Thor confounding readers and gods alike for months, taking the mantle and running with it, wielding Mjolnir and thwarting villains as only a Thor can. Sexy Star’s identity is not in question, but her ever-present mask adds an air of mystery to her fast-paced, high flying brand of wrestling. To maintain her masked persona, Sexy Star could dress as the mysterious female Thor, helmet, armor, cape, hammer and all. She’s more than proven herself worthy, right?
