Welcome to this week’s NXT review. This week’s show boasts new beginnings and right off the bat we’re greeted with a revamped theme song and an improved opening credits sequence. A new era, where have we heard and seen this before?

However, we start off women’s division action with some TakeOver fallout highlighting Ember Moon‘s character. This is a very encouraging start to the broadcast. Let’s watch:

We get a video package highlighting the bout between Asuka and Ember. After that fateful night Ember reflects in the empty arena. She said this was supposed to be her opportunity to show the world she could do anything. As she looks on she says it was supposed to be her destiny to be the one to make history and dethrone Asuka. She says TakeOver is where it all went wrong and it’s where Asuka proved that she would do anything to retain her title. She vows to be the next champion.

After Ember’s segment, we’re introduced to Ruby Riot as she makes her formal in-ring debut on an episode of NXT!

As Ruby makes her entrance an introductory video plays in the corner. She says she made her debut up against Sanity but she’s here in NXT because she has her eyes on the gold. With this match, she says, she’ll start on that path and incite a riot.

Her opponent is someone very familiar. It’s Kimberly Frankele, formally known as Kimber Lee! They eye each other up before squaring off. The wrestling starts off fast with reversals until Kimberly is able to start digging into Ruby with hard punches. She smashes Ruby’s face into the turnbuckle but then Ruby is able to counter with a boot to Kimberly’s face.

She then goes up for a flying huricanrana. All of a sudden though Nikki Cross pops up and starts banging on the barricade in the audience. Trying not to let the distraction get to her, Ruby grabs Kimberly but winds up eating a jawbreaker instead.

Ruby collects herself but Kimberly grabs her and grounds her with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Kimberly starts kicking Ruby while Nikki observes. Kimberly and Ruby then trade hard slaps in the corner. Ruby takes control of the match with multiple clotheslines and a dropkick. She then knees Kimberly’s face into the turnbuckle. The stiff hits continue as Ruby puts Kimberly away with a winding up pele kick.

Ruby ends the match staring down Nikki.

After the match we’re taken to some footage from earlier that day featuring Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as they continue their quest to redecorate the Performance Center in their image.

They spot Liv Morgan and Aliyah, calling them NXT’s resident losers. Peyton taunts Aliyah about her loss last week. Liv winds up pushing Billie into a tub in retaliation.

Thoughts: I can get used to this. Three women’s segments on one show, lord have mercy! It’s been quite some time since the women were able to capture this much time. I want to say it’s almost been a year since we’ve had so much development. I’m very pleased with this week’s episode of NXT. It hit all the right notes in all the right ways.

Though the new theme song on it’s own leaves something to be desired, it fits with the new opening sequence which now features more women than the old one did. That’s a very good sign.

Now to the segments, let’s start off with Ember. Her revelations video was a bit stiff but moving at the same time. This loss is going to propel her forward with a more determined focus. This is what her character has needed. Ember’s been lacking development and direction since she debuted. We knew she’d be special, we know she’s a fantastic talent, but her motives were still thin. We still don’t know much about her but this segment is taking her in a new and better direction. Now we’ll truly know who Ember is. We’ve seen her fall, it’s her next actions that will give us what we need to know. Also, she’s finally being given some mic/promo time. I want her to give us everything she’s got and she’ll get there. Like I said, her voice over was stiff but NXT is developmental, with practice she’ll learn when to emote and effectively use her voice to get herself over even more. I’m ready for it.

The match between Ruby and Kimberly was fiery. I could watch them wrestle all day and would have loved for them to get the chance to work even more. I can’t wait until Kimberly is able to flesh out a firm character for herself and her theme song was great! Ruby is also very swift and very smooth. I’m already a very big fan of her and this is the first time I’m seeing her in action outside of that TakeOver spot. Kudos to NXT for taking the time to give Ruby some more motivation too. It was a nice touch to have that promo video as she entered the ring. I loved how this furthered her story line with Nikki too.

Nikki plays her role so wonderfully. She’s crazy and can’t control herself. Ruby is dynamic and seems to pack a more controlled version of madness. When they collide it should produce a delightful match. I can’t wait to see it!

The last segment was wild also. I’m glad they decided to give the Icons and the newbies a consistent narrative. They followed up on Peyton’s win against Aliyah and tried to show us that the underdogs will fight back.

Aliyah still needs heaps of character work but now we know for certain Aliyah and Liv are partners too and Liv has her back. Liv was her gutsy self so no complaints there. She’s already partially established as a no nonsense babyface even if her style needs tweaking.

All in all it’s very encouraging to see NXT start this “new era” on the right foot. Now I want to see them keep it up!

What did you think of last night’s NXT? Are you excited for a possible Ruby/Nikki showdown? Did you like Ember’s segment? Sound off in the comments below.

  • The Ember Moon interview was kind of weird. I don’t know how I really felt about it.

  • I LOVED Ember’s video clip. It developed the feud and most importantly her. I’m excited for their next match.

Yes! This is turning into a personal feud were Asuka found herself too successful to keep it up without cheating and Ember will emerge from her ashes like a phoenix.

      • KatyaMenelli

Took the words right out of my mouth right there!

  • A?.

This was a decent episode, to be honest. But I’m still not satisfied with the length of the matches lately, and they should have at least 2 women’s matches.

  • This was a cute episode. Ember is finally getting some character development, that’s what we need. Ruby and Kimber Lee did good, and I’m looking forward to Nikki vs Ruby, preferably at Takeover: Chicago.

Aussies, Liv and Aliyah segment was funny, gotta love the Iconic ones. Wish they’d be utilized better, and that goes for the whole division. Asuka, where are you?

  • Don ???

“Brooding Elegance”. That’s how I describe Kimberly’s entrance music and ring entrance. It was so tantilizing I didn’t expect it coming from her. Her signature pose is so polished as well. I hope we see more from her in the future. She made a fantastic first impression on me. (^^) Stoked for the upcoming Nikki vs Ruby feud as well. I’d love to see these girls compete in an Extreme Rules / Hardcore match.

Ember’s video package was great (much needed too) and the backstage segment between the Iconics & Aliyah and Liv was hilarious. The NXT women had a great week.

Plus, Mandy Rose and Daria were on the stage during Shinsuke’s farewell speech so it’s good to know they’re backstage at least… I guess. Haha ?

  • Aye Mate

They had a neat idea in the video package for the aftermath of Ember Moon’s loss to Asuka – showing spades of vulnerability and teasing a future rematch – but the only problem is that it was somewhat poorly acted. Who’s holding the promo classes these days?

Ruby Riot and Kimber Lee’s match was short but sweet. In fact, it speaks volumes of their class of talent that they elevated what would normally be a typical throwaway/squash match. Excited to see the dynamics between Riot and Nikki Cross; both could be two special acts once Asuka departs from the roster.

Billie Kay and Peyton Royce come off infinitely more natural in their backstage antics, but their skit was pretty daft. Although, Royce filming her friend in peril as opposed to helping her is a very hot cultural topic and could be used to tease dissension… but that would possibly require too much intelligence on creative’s part.

    • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

Ember’s delivery of the promo was kind of ok. This is her first real promo, I expect her to grow but you are right. The rest was good, NXT is looking strong again.

  • #BrieForPeace ?

Ember’s booking is terrible. She’s supposed to be this myth war goddess who’s on a warpath but yet smiles when she’s on her way to the ring and is all affected because of a loss. Don’t get me wrong the segment would’ve worked had we known who Ember was previously and her motives but seeing we didn’t, the segment plain and simple made her look fragile, weak and instead of adding more character I feel it even raised a bigger question mark as to who she is.

Ruby Riot looks and wrestles like a million bucks. The girl is totally ready for the spotlight and she’s making the most out of her opportunity. I can totally see her being the forefront of the division in the future. Kimberly Frankele ( I was surprised her name was pronounced like ” Frankly” I thought it was ” Frank-Elle” and it would sound better with the latter form) I liked her pose and the confidence she showcased. The PC has been doing wonders to these girls and you can tell. Can’t wait until they’re estabilished. Nikki Cross to me still falls flat. It’s so easy to act crazy and I feel her performances are humouristic to me rather than intriguing. I legit have no interest in her as much as I want she does not capture my attention. I don’t think this is the best route for her honestly and a complete make-over would turn this around.

I’m dead at the Iconic Duo, Liv and Aliyah segment. Billie Kay plays her character to PERFECTION despite it being generic. Liv showed consistency in her character being the feisty loudmouth fearless babyface. Aliyah is still lost but she has so much potential, I wish she could just click. When Billie fell into the tub I legit laughed, she sold it soooo well. This backstage skits are providing more character growth than the actual NXT show.

  • #BrieForPeace ?

P.S- I just keep thinking why is Asuka away after PPV’s? Is it purposely? Is she having english classes? Are they trying to not overwork her? Do they have no idea what to do with her? It seems sketchy

    • conan_kun

This makes me think that Asuka may like Brock Lesnar when she’s on main roster, rarely on TV.

  • conan_kun

Billie is fallen, and she can’t get up. Funny that Peyton just stand there to keep filming Billie’s embarrassing moment instead of pulling her bestie out of bath tub.

  • Kvngbalor

NXT felt so fresh last night love Ruby and Kimber Lee those two are going to tear the house down at a Takeover one day it’s funny how marks swore they didn’t have the WWE look but since her NXT debut Ruby has been getting all type of guys stanning for her look also Ember Moon package gave me a feel that she is really about to explode now that she see Asuka is willing to do anything to win i can see her doing the same and think her win over Asuka won’t be clean

  • Kvngbalor

Also loved seeing Andrea Binky Danielle Crazy Mary Dobson and so many others on stage last night the NXT women’s division is stacked

  • Queen of Spark

Aliyah: I kinda did feel bad for her with Peyton’s bragging. However…what’s she supposed to be? I just want to know more about her because we know she’s great in the ring for such a young age.

  • Queen of Spark

Liv: I’ll still do my best to get used to her gimmick, but I do love her no nonsense attitude whenever she can show it.

  • Queen of Spark

The Icons: Having their own video was a great touch instead of a cameraman. Billie made me laugh too hard once she was in the tub.

  • Queen of Spark

Nikki: I’m glad she’s able to adapt more to her dysfunctional gimmick. She’s such a great threat who doesn’t care who she faces.

  • Queen of Spark

Ruby: I love her now thanks to that video before her match. Her skills are really smooth and amusing. Nxt writers better not mess her nor Nikki up.

  • Queen of Spark

Ember: Now we can be happy because she’s finally developing more about her goal. Now she need some to tell us about her gimmick. The attires doesn’t say enough for most of us.

  • Queen of Spark

I already know Kimberly will get her actual character down after the next Takeover. She’s already impressed me with her effort. Plus, she needs to keep that theme, cause she did the entrance well with it.

  • vdcvt

Ahhh I’m loving the Iconic duo. Billie is just winning me over with her character on these backstage segments. I truly find her hilarious and she’s just going all for it every time. And why Peyton no help Billie out of the tub? XD

    • Robin Zabriskie

      busy filming her hahahaha

    • PoisonFelino#Watermelondrea

Couldn’t risk to get her hair wet xP

  • Call Up Asuka NOW

Hope Asuka gets called up soon so it can be Asuka vs Charlotte for the SD women’s title at SummerSlam

    Good show overall

  • Black Widow

Man, Ruby is my new hero. I love the way she moves around in the ring.

Nikki Cross, Ruby Riot, Kimber Lee, Crazy Mary Dobson could be the next fantastic 4 of NXT though..

    • abcburak

Next 4hw, crazy mary should debut soon.

      • 3???????

        She debuted already

        • Black Widow

what about the rumors stating that she left wwe already?

          • She tweeted about it, saying she’s still employed but we have to be patient

          • 3???????

She made a statement and said she hasn’t

    • Jesus’s brother / AF Club

      Ember and Asuka too

  • Ruby Riot is really coming along and I am liking her character too. The Ember Moon package was everything I needed to see for her character and for me to be invested in her. It was also really great to see the Icons/Liv/Aliyah segment with Billie falling into the cold tub and are they already teasing a Peyton/Billie breakup. Hmmm a bit too soon if you ask me but either way this “New” NXT is shaping up to be quite good and I’m hoping the old NXT I fell in love with is making its way back.

  • Ken Lushh

    I’m so here for Kimberlee.

  • Vito

Ruby riot is giving me LIFE!!! she’s so crisp and clean and fluid, love her character too, kimberly was just as impressive, i love these indy origin girls facing off so hard hitting, that kick to the back made mine, and the crowds, wig fly!! also loved embers video package

  • trishlita721

Ruby is giving me massive Paige vibes and I’m really liking Nikki more and more now that we’re seeing alittle more of her.

  • #WWEPushPayton&Billie <3

Love billie she made me howl lol and ruby I love but she has a very strange look… looking forward to her fude with Nikki tho

  • Radic

I had a feeling they would include some backstage/promo things to keep the Asuka/Ember feud going. Makes sense they’d go this route, now Ember has a goals and a true purpose for going after Asuka, which is what she needed instead of ‘I just want the title’ without much else to her character.

And yes Heidi! Yes Ruby! Yes… to everything about you! Can’t wait to see where this whole angle with her and Nikki ends up going.

And Aliyah/Liv and Billie/Peyton… at least they are doing a thing.

  • howie_ruhl

Sucks that Ruby’s not using her rana finisher. Her talking in the interview too seems awkward and clipped. Other than that, she does have a lot of potential in the roster. And I’m glad that they’re letting her use some of her indie moves. I’m wondering though if she can use that head scissor to turnbuckle repeatedly; kind of like a version of ODB’s Dirty Dozen.

    • KatyaMenelli

Yes! I wished she used her Snap Hurricanrana Driver or her Heidi Ho. That seemed like a signature move to set up a finisher.

  • ?K . A . T ?

So impressed with how Heidi is doing so far in the WWE as Ruby Riot! She’s killing it! <3

  • BitchFit

is it just me or Ruby’s finisher does not seem effective? any one else? or just me lol

  • Diva_Fan

I’m really liking Ruby she just seems to have slotted in so naturally and is killing it so far she’s so smooth and swift in the ring as well !

  • Did anyone else noticed Asuka dancing during Shinsuke’s farewell? But when she noticed Peyton singing his theme song, she stopped dancing and smiling? I can’t, Asuka’s facial expressions are the best thing in NXT right now.

    • PoisonFelino#Watermelondrea

It’s crazy how she can be so comedic without talking much.

    • John Finnie

That’s a woman who gets over with little words… I always say if your not a good talker then at least have mannerisms that stand out & get you noticed Askua & lita did it to perfection ( more so Askua)

      • KatyaMenelli

Yea Lita was, and It showed especially with Essa Rios too.

  • i enjoyed nxt immensely

  • Troy Rochester

Not Ruby Riot showing more potential and making more of an impression on me in a few weeks of being on NXT than Billie/Peyton/Aaliyah/Liv have in months/years of being there …..

  • Robin Zabriskie

i know it sounds teddy long but i would like to see a multi women’s tag team match just to have an idea of the girls who are currently signed to nxt….i think i have missed a few new girls

    • KatyaMenelli

I completely agree. This was what made TNA’S Knockout division successful during the first few years.

  • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

NXT is looking strong and were able to do it little by little. This division will be great, Ruby, Kimberly, Nikki, Ember, Asuka, Peyton & Billie are fantastic workers. I like the way Aliyah wrestle too but she needs to work on character development way too much. There’s nothing meaningful behind her, Liv in the other hand is not that good in the ring yet but she’s very gutsy and plays this underdog that will take a beating but stand up for herself.

I’m super glad Ember finally got character development and it feels like she’s a person and not this myth. Asuka is starting to feel more like a person too, with her actions success got into her head while Ember is so dissapointed at herself that she will bring even more fight in her. The video was fire!

    • K. W. M.

I agree to everything! Sadly i can’t like Aliyah anymore. She blocked me and others on twitter just for supporting Peyton. Never said anything mean. Too bitchy in real life. :/

      • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

I your case, I understand your position but that is the reason I don’t follow them on Twitter, IG or any social media outlet. I just like to follow their work, not their personal life or beefs.

        • K. W. M.

ya, but you shouldn’t act like that as a face. Kevin Owens blocks people because he is also kayfabe on his twitter, but Aliyah? Wow.

          • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

Well she is not Aliyah 24/7, she is also human. I know you guys see Lita but in reality she is Amy Dumas. Do you get what I’m saying?

          • K. W. M.

Know that, just wanted to say that she seems very bitchy in real life. Very disappointing.

          • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

I am sorry about that. I’m sure she’ll be hard to follow after that. I’ll be ignoring her, not even caring but I see what you are saying.

      • Don ???

I’m sorry, but Aliyah doing that is sort of hilarious. ? If true I wouldn’t have expected that level of prettiness from her.

  • MK126

This was a real good episode for the women. The promo (although much needed) seemed odd. Maybe it was the way it was acted but I feel like they could have done better. Ember kept saying “it was my destiny to beat asuka” and blah blah blah but why is it your destiny? I think if they had explained her destiny more it probably would have came across as a more solid promo. As for the match I thought it was great. You can tell that Heidi/Kimberley have a pretty good relationship cause it looked like Kimberley was pretty stiff with her strikes. Nikki coming out during the match and causing for a distraction would have came across better if Heidi lost cause now it looks like she isn’t much of a distraction. The backstage segment with Iconic/Liv/Aliyah was hilarious! “Looks like someones goin down under *Australian accent* that was GOLD!

    • Black Widow

Nikki coming out during the match and causing for a distraction would have came across better if Heidi lost cause now it looks like she isn’t much of a distraction—> This just proved that Ruby come across as very motivated to achieve her goal (in becoming NXT Women Champion) in my opinion. Nothing, not even Nikki may stop her.

      • MK126

But her main goal right now doesn’t involve the womens title. Unless this feud continues to the point of Nikki interfering constantly or trying to disrupt all of her matches then I could see that. If Ruby earned a title shot and Nikki in some form prevented her from winning then I could see that. As of now her goal should be focusing on Nikki and I think her losing this match to Kimberly would have solidified the whole “numbers” thing insanity has going on.

        • Black Widow

“She says she made her debut up against Sanity but she’s here in NXT because she has her eyes on the gold. With this match, she says, she’ll start on that path and incite a riot.”—> that is enough motivation for me.

    • PoisonFelino#Watermelondrea

I feel the same way about the Ember Moon segment.

  • Thank’s Nxt is taking come good women’s division road, new fresh faces debuting like Ruby and Kimerly, without forgetting the “Veterans” featuring Iconic, Liv and Aliyah, also Ember Moon is getting some attention.

  • PoisonFelino#Watermelondrea

The match was short but good. I’m happy both women got to debut so soon. It felt like they kept Athena off of TV for ages after her signing.

The Ember Moon segment was rather awkward but it’s good that she finally got one. I’m looking forward to where she goes from here.

  • K. W. M.

The only thing this segment needed was Billie screaming “I can’t swim” and it would have been even better lol

  • John Finnie

Got a feeling that ember may turn heel as a surprise instead of askua
The match was good short but good
Love the icons still don’t see why liv is on tv yet she’s so generic & I can’t get into her at all

  • -B

Yasss for Ruby & Kimber Lee! The chemistry between the two, I live for it!
Can’t wait to see the continuation of Ruby vs Nikki as well, it looks very promising <3
