Kevin Eck, a former writer of WWE’s creative team who is credited for the AJ Lee and Daniel Bryan pairing, has recently published an article where he shares five pitched storylines that were ultimately rejected by Vince McMahon.

One of the storylines listed involved the idea of pairing AJ Lee with Dean Ambrose as a way to introduce Dean to the main roster. Read the full synopsis idea below:

The rocky relationship between AJ and Bryan culminated with AJ leaving him at the altar after she discovered he was planning on having her committed to a mental institution after the wedding.

Meanwhile, the creative team was looking for a Plan B to bring Ambrose from developmental to the main roster. Plan A — a “worked-shoot” angle with Ambrose and Mick Foley engaging in a war of words on social media — was scrapped after Foley legitimately took issue with something Ambrose said about him.

My idea was for Bryan’s plan to have AJ committed actually succeed. We’d take her off TV for a little while before bringing her back in dramatic fashion. She would return with her new boyfriend (Ambrose), whom she had met while both were patients in the institution.

Ambrose and AJ would wreak havoc, becoming WWE’s version of Bonnie and Clyde (or Mickey and Mallory, to use a less-dated analogy).

Vince McMahon had a different vision. The WWE chairman and CEO loved the AJ character and decided to make her the new “Raw” general manager after she called off the wedding to Bryan. AJ as GM didn’t get over, and her run as an authority figure lasted just three months.

Kevin also reveals ideas he had for a potential Kaitlyn and Cody Rhodes pairing in 2013 as well the idea of Cody and Brandi Rhodes serving as the new Goldust and Marlena in 2014.

You can read the full list here.

  • I love how everything remain like the TV showed, the proper push for Aj Lee to become Divas Champion and start her rising career. And thank god Dean Ambrose debuted with “The Shield”

  • Darryl lee

They should’ve went with that idea instead of aj being the GM. She did fine. But I much prefer the pairing with her and ambrose. Besides, I think it’ll make ambrose more of a lunatic fringe than he is now.

  • YonceLuvsDivas

Wtf? This was one of those times Vince totally screwed up! That storyline sound awesome. Omg I’d give anything to see that. Ugh curse you Vince McMahon!!!

  • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

I’m glad they didn’t do that. That’s too fan fiction-y. Dean and AJ aren’t even that insane.

  • Wrestling.fan.from.France

It did have potential but only as a plan B. Dean benefited MUCH MORE from the Sheild than he would have had with this. This allowed him to build his fanbase and his potential with the female demographic wouldn’t have necessarily been maximized since he was with a woman I believe.

As for AJ, other than elevating him and him being just another superstar he dated, I don’t think this would have been so much better than what happened in the long-term. AJ being GM led to Cena AJ (which wasn’t so good but led to a massive heel turn) and then AJ and Dolph which allowed Kaitlyn and AJ to be this way. Plus, this would have gotten AJ to a whole new level of crazy which I don’t believe would have been so good.

Could have been good but happy it went the way it did.

What he said about Kaitlyn, Cody (and the Bellas) :

“The Romance Of Cody Rhodes And Kaitlyn (2013)

Rhodes had started sporting a cheesy, thin moustache that immediately caught the attention of the fans, who chanted “Cody’s moustache” during his matches. WWE Diva Kaitlyn had tweeted several times in the past that she had a thing for guys with moustaches. This one was a no-brainer — or so I thought.

At the time, Rhodes and Damien Sandow were paired together as best friends and tag-team partners. I thought it would be compelling if moustache-lover Kaitlyn, a babyface, suddenly found Rhodes irresistible despite the fact that he was a heel.

Rhodes and Kaitlyn would begin dating, causing Sandow to resent her for putting a strain on his bromance and for her trying to change Rhodes by encouraging him to abandon his villainous ways. Having to choose between a love interest and a close friend is something a lot of people could identify with.

I figured we could take the storyline in several different directions. The obvious route would be for a jealous Sandow to turn on Rhodes. Eventually, Sandow would get together with a rival of Kaitlyn’s, leading to a series of mixed tag matches.

Another way to go would be for Kaitlyn to turn heel and hook up with Sandow, saying Sandow’s impressive beard put Rhodes’ moustache to shame.

My initial pitch of Kaitlyn being attracted to Rhodes actually did make it onto TV, but I could tell McMahon wasn’t all that interested in it. When Brie and Nikki Bella returned to WWE, the storyline was abruptly dropped after a couple weeks because McMahon decided to align the Bella twins with Rhodes and Sandow.

“What about the budding romance between Rhodes and Kaitlyn?” I asked McMahon during a booking meeting.

McMahon, who had made it clear on several occasions he did not find Kaitlyn’s muscular physique all that attractive, replied (and I’m paraphrasing): “If one of the Bellas showed interest in Cody, why would he ever look at Kaitlyn again?”

Undeterred, I said, “Because plenty of men in our audience think Kaitlyn is hot whether you think so or not.”

Actually, I didn’t say that. I believe my response was, “Fair enough, sir.””

I love AJ’s sense of humour. The last few sentences made me chuckle.

      • Wrestling.fan.from.France

It wasn’t from AJ lol. It was actually the writer talking with Vince.

        • Gabriella Panajotova

Oh, lol! It totally sounds like something she would say it got me fooled :D

          • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Yeah lol but they clearly wouldn’t have the same meaning as Vince was being… Vince with his mindset on how people view a girl like Kaitlyn.

“Cody And Brandi Rhodes As The New Goldust And Marlena (2014)

With my story ine of Kaitlyn coming between best friends Rhodes and Sandow having died a premature death, I later pitched another variation of Rhodes being caught between his girl and someone close to him. This time, the conflict involved Rhodes’ real-life wife, Brandi (who was then known as WWE ring announcer Eden Stiles), and his brother, Goldust.

It already had been decided by McMahon that Rhodes was going to transform into a new character known as Stardust, who would wear face paint and ring attire similar to Goldust’s. The question was how we were going to get there.

Rhodes and Goldust were a babyface tag team at the time, and I suggested we play off the fact the veteran Goldust was getting a bigger reaction from the crowd than his younger brother. Feeling that Goldust is hogging the spotlight, Rhodes turns on him and becomes Stardust.

It’s revealed Brandi was the one who planted the seed in her husband’s mind that his brother was using him to stay relevant and keep him from becoming the star of the team. Brandi’s plan is for Stardust to become bigger than Goldust ever was, and she adopts a look and mannerisms that are reminiscent of Goldust’s former wife/valet, Marlena.

McMahon instead chose to have Rhodes and Goldust go on a losing streak, which led to Rhodes saying his brother deserved a better partner than him. Rhodes conducted a search for a new partner for Goldust before ultimately having an epiphany that the man for the job was him as Stardust.

Stardust eventually turned on Goldust, but Brandi wasn’t involved, and McMahon pulled the plug on the feud after just one pay-per-view match.”

    • Gabriella Panajotova

LMAO…Vince is really losing his touch, or he just got boring. He used to be so over the top and he passed on that?

      • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Honestly, this particular idea wouldn’t have worked imo simply for the fact that Brandi isn’t good. Plus, I was never a fan of Stardust and so… Yeah.

        • Gabriella Panajotova

I loooved Stardust! I can agree on Brandi though. She is too wooden to pull off a Marlena.

          • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Brandi is just… and on Cody, I was never much of a big fan of him. I only was when he was dashing Cody Rhodes (and when he was in the Legacy). Other than that, never much of a fan.

  • I kinda like this storyline idea secretly. But then wouldn’t have had GM AJ :(
Whelp everything happens for a reason.

  • Marlon Eric

General Manager AJ was not my favorite. It didn’t exactly bomb, but it could’ve been more productive. Hell, the outfits she wore could’ve been more effective with a little more creativity.

The Dean Ambrose idea isn’t so bad.

  • Bipolar Cupcake

i would love to see this storyline on raw. Alexa would be perfect for this role i think she can pull it off with her real life boyfriend Murphy from nxt

  • Ollie Roche

I never cared for her as GM as I never understand what she realistically accomplished to get there. TBH, her acting was great but I never liked her until she became divas champion because PG eras idea of crazy feels so cringey.

  • Monkey Meat

Her character was red hot, and then she lost so much steam that Eve was literally a hotter act than she was. AJ didn’t truly rebound until the secret admirer storyline. Making AJ the general manager was a terrible decision, and she ended up being blamed for the ratings sinking.

  • Gabriella Panajotova

Damn, that would’ve been really cool but it would’ve meant The Shield would’ve been different if they even were going to happen. I still think Dean was best in Shield.

  • NY

Sounds better than Ravens crazy 7 Deadly Sins Storyline back in the day involving Matt and Lita. I think this couldve been awesome, they both have that crazy look to them. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b9a049b283c8bfe24ad24abe1f71566fe8337438405d40e2802cb49d967bfa7f.gif

  • Sass.

This sounds a cool enough concept. WWE’s Joker & Harley Quinn would’ve been interesting.

Although AJ as GM kinda sucked, everything worked out well in the end for both AJ & Dean. Dean went on to succeed in The Shield, and the secret admirer storyline lead to AJ’s title win and dominance in the division.

  • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

He clearly was blind, AJ as GM got over but it didn’t meant to be there for a long period of time. She was a wrestler, a superstar not really like Vickie, Stephanie, Teddy or any other.

    • ThePeaceVibe.

I found it odd he said that as well. I actually enjoyed AJ as the GM and I felt like the universe was behind her during that stint.

    • wwepassion

She wasn’t really that over as GM and she made no impact like Teddy, Stephanie, Vickie, Eric bishoff did.

      • Miguel Orona Rodríguez

She spent there about 3 months with only a story with Vickie that was done like any diva storyline. Why are you expecting that to leave a mark as a GM?

        • wwepassion

That’s not even my reason as I said nothing about that. She wasn’t good period as GM and it did nothing for her or the roster like the ppl I mentioned.

  • Lacey’s ugly stick

So they have AJ be with 10 men but the majority of WWE universe will remember Eve as the hoski even tho she has only been with 2 men on screen. One is treated as a wrestling icon while the other even tho she was just as good as the first if not better will be forever remembered as the girl who ditched Zack for Cena. And everything else what she did will be ignored. Also Eve was one of the first girls to put AJ over.

    • Gabriella Panajotova

Well, I don’t really see the big issue. The hoeski feud was her most high profiled feud and her break out. It is expected that it would be the most memorable moment and part of her character.
With AJ everyone immediately thinks about the Pipebomb and only then about her character going through half the male division :D

      • Lacey’s ugly stick

To be fair Eve was a 2 times divas champion beforehand and they could elivate her as the top heel by making her feud with her friends Kelly and Alicia by the time and then moving on to Layla and Kaitlyn for example, rather than turning her into the hoski type of character. And lets be 100% honest right now nobody wants to be remembered the way she is remembered.

    • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Eve left when her career was just getting better and getting somewhat memorable. She left too soon.

Plus, there is a difference between using men to get to the top and getting in love with every single men you’ve been with because of the fact that you are easily seduced by a man who shows some attention to you and due to you mental health.

    • YonceLuvsDivas

I agree with you but that’s honestly Eve’s fault. She left at a point where she could’ve been the biggest thing in the division and actually make more of a name for herself. If she stayed in sure AJ Lee wouldn’t have became the longest reigning champion and probably could’ve avoided that stale period of Total Divas all getting here butts handed to them by AJ.

    • ThePeaceVibe.

I wish Eve would have stayed longer. Just when I was really getting into her she left and it was such a shame because I feel she could’ve given us so much more.

  • StraightFire

Oh god. I remember people wanting them together so much.

  • -V

I wish they went full steam ahead for this, it sounds so good. Too bad we won’t see it at all now. Kinda reminds me of the Seth/Paige thing they did in FCW and I loved it.

  • Gabby M.

As much as I love AJ as RAW GM but I would’ve loved AJ paired with Dean that’s a fanfiction writers dream but if that happened makes me wonder would there be any Shield?

    • Shan

I was all for it until I realised: if this had happened there may have been no Shield.

      • Gabby M.

Good point but would Dean & AJ make a good couple after the Sheild without being paired with Ziggler.

        • Shan

I could see that. I would definitely be behind that.

  • Rainee Toneme

Crazy AJ/Ambrose sounds like fun. We need a crazy insane couple in WWE, with a stable, to run roughshod over the roster. The couples we have now are too polished and pristine.

  • Radic

I think this idea could have worked. It would have done better than AJ & Dolph & Big E did anyway.

  • wwepassion

Dean isn’t meant for working with women not even Renee which is why she was barely apart of that failed feud with him. He is awkward and is better with shield or solo. None of that girlfriend stuff.
