On this day in history:

August 16th, 2006 | The 2006 Diva Search came to an end in a special live broadcast. The weeks-long competition, which featured the likes of Rosa Mendes and Maryse, came down to Layla and Jen England. When Layla’s name was called, she could hardly contain her excitement, jumping up and down and hugging fans. She has since become the Diva Search winner with the longest WWE run, surpassing Christy Hemme, Ashley Massaro and Eve Torres.

What are your memories of this moment?

  • My Queen. She definitely made us proud, one of the best women’s career ever! I miss her so much

    • MK126

She looks great with both titles! She really did do the best out of all the DS winners with her long career. Even when she was green wrestling on SD with Ashley, Krystal and Jillian she was good

      • Definitely. She really went from zero to something, it was amazing to see her growth.

      • All Eyes On Me

Yeah her and Eve are the only WWE contest (TE, DS) winners that really made it.

        • MK126

I think that’s because they knew what their strengths and weaknesses were. Plus WWE prolly realized after Christy/Ashley that these girls need training before getting in the ring. Eve played interviewer and Layla was in simple basic matches while on SD/ECW and training behind the scenes. Plus she was doing much wrestling while on ECW so she definitely had time to train and ask those guys for advice and help

          • All Eyes On Me

Agreed. Christy and Ashley were shoved to the spotlight way too soon.

          • MK126

Not saying that Christy was bad. Her WM match with Trish was good (for obvious reasons) but she was finding her groove in her feud with Victoria and her brief feud with Melina

          • jcott3

The WWE women’s division was coming apart at the seams when Christy won the DS. Jazz, Nidia, Gail Kim and Jacqueline got released and Ivory got moved to doing WWE Experience and sometimes doing commentary on Heat. When Lita tore her ACL in January 2005, they decided to push Christy into her spot at WrestleMania, and she wasn’t ready.

Then Molly Holly walked and Trish hurt her back, plus Lita’s affair with Edge got out. That left them so depleted they had no choice but to keep pushing Christy hard, and she wound up with an “all looks, no talent” label. That’s why I keep saying her getting cut and going to TNA was a good thing, as it allowed her to get a fresh start.

As for Ashley, WWE didn’t even bother to send her OVW for training. They just gave her a bunch of videos of Molly Holly’s matches and told her to study them, then would show her moves before Raw each week. And people wonder why she was “a danger to herself and others” in the ring.

    • Gavin

She looked so good with that Women’s Title! Glad she got to be the last champion.

Luv Layla but that dress is a no to me. It’s like her boobies gonna fall out all the time ?

Gosh I miss her ..she was my Number 1

  • Darryl lee

Oh, the diva search. Truly one of the worst ideas wwe has ever had. All I can say is THANK GOD it’s over.

    • LaurenYorkStan

Shut yo bitch ass up, how is it one of the worst ideas ever when it produced more talents than any other competition show they’ve had

      • Darryl lee

This “competition” has produced some of the most horrific and classless segments in wwe history. I think the diva search did more harm than good. If I want to see women being presented in a good way, I’d watch GLOW on Netflix rather than this crap. Besides look at some of the winners they had. Christy hemme? Ashley massaro? They won the search and what happened to them? The only winner of this competition that actually improved are eve and layla.

        • LaurenYorkStan

Christy continued to wrestle on the indy’s and TNA until she got injured years laters and the winner’s of diva search still achieved way more than the winners of Tough Enough so don’t even

          • Gail-Rollins Fan

Her match with Awesome Kong was really good.

          • Darryl lee

            Which match? Just one?

          • Gail-Rollins Fan

I can’t remember if there was more than one, but it was the big one they had at a PPV. She had been “storyline” trained by Aj Styles leading up to the match.

          • Darryl lee

Are there any great Christy hemme matches? Cause if there were, the Internet would’ve been praising her in-ring work by now.

          • LaurenYorkStan

actually they do they don’t overrate her like they do some people……but look up her match with Kong

          • Darryl lee

Is it the one with the KO title on the line? Cause I just searched it.

          • Typical Heel

            Christy Hemme vs Kharma

          • Darryl lee

Just ONE? Girl, even EVA had one good match. Try again.

          • Typical Heel

I’m a whole dude ??? yes just one, leave me alone lol

        • And what are those “segments”? Do tell.

          • Darryl lee
          • How you gonna compare a competition segment to what we got after the show? You make no sense. Those were just for the entertainment. What we got AFTER was MANY talented ladies, that built something in either WWE, TNA or other promotions.

          • Darryl lee

Many? I don’t remember 5 or 6 out of about a hundred different females count as MANY.

          • The shows didn’t include over 8 women per season. And there were only 4 seasons. We even got some big names who didnt make it to the finals.

    • Gail-Rollins Fan

The Divas search itself created quite a few great women. Michelle, Layla, Eve, and to a lesser extent ring wise, Maryse. They were all more capable than say someone with a wrestling family background like Tamina.

The problem wasn’t so much the Divas Search itself, but the mindset behind it that they could train any pretty model to wrestle, and turn them into stars.

      • Darryl lee

Actually the diva search itself played a HUGE part in why most people don’t care about womens wrestling. Like I just mentioned below. That atrocity produced some of the worst segments in TELEVISION history

        • jcott3

Cue the people here to talk about how “iconic” some of those segments (like “Diss The Diva”) were.

Even though the 2004 Diva Search made me want to cringe (the 2005 DS got written up on WrestleCrap), it somehow got decent ratings, which is why they kept doing it.

    • Wrestling.fan.from.France

Very much. This was the true cancer of the women’s division. This was the true beginning of the end for women in WWE. This did more bad than good.

We had some good talents coming out of it, Michelle McCool being a stand out as she became one of the greatest female wrestler in WWE history.
Nonetheless, the image awful it gave to women in general in eyes of fans… The way women were represented in it and these challenges ridiculous as well and the fact that their mindset was all about pretty girls and not even trained female wrestlers.

      Hated it.

      • jcott3

Michelle was also one of the few DS contestants who wasn’t selected through a modeling or casting agency.

    • Lmaoo the show gave them the best talents out of any other competitions.

      • Darryl lee

That’s because they didn’t even TRY with the other competitions. Remember tough enough that happened on smackdown? And you wanna talk about BEST talents? I know eve, Michelle and layla were good. But compared to the 4 horsewoman and alexa. Nope. And let’s be honest. No matter how you spin it. The Diva search will go down as one of the biggest mistakes wwe has ever did. You thought that the “Bayley, this your life” segment was bad, wait till you see those girls fail at making ice cream or eating pie.

        • You literally lost me after you put Alexa there. I’m so done.
Candice, McCool, Eve, Layla, Bellas, Christy, Maria, Maryse, Taryn, Brooke all made their marks on both companies and more.
          Others like
Rosa had longevity and was a good manager, Ashley was over with the fans, and Angela showed a lot of potential on FCW and has been doing great in Lucha Underground as Black Lotus.

Sorry but those are more names that you can name from any other competitions even if you put them combined.

          • Darryl lee

ROSA? A good manager? Girl please? What great superstars did she managed? I say alexa because she have something MOST women in wrestling don’t and that’s the GIFT OF GAB. That’s one of the reasons why the fans love AJ. Longevity doesn’t mean crap. Ashley? She was terrible and why they gave her more tv time than someone like GAIL KIM is beyond me.

          • Jaded

Eve and Layla were great on the mic too

          • Darryl lee

            Really? Which promo?

          • Yes Rosa. She managed Epico and Primo to a tag title run along with a WM win. Idk what you’re talking about with Alexa and AJ but I’ve shown you several women that made it big inside and outside the big leagues.
And Ashley wasn’t even in the same era as Gail.

          • Darryl lee

Those guys were JOBBERS. Their match at WM was on the PRE-SHOW, Not wrestlemania. Primo’s career has been on the skits since his brother Carlito left WWE. I say Alexa and AJ are great because they can actually TALK. Which is something the rest of the female roster can’t do apparently.

          • Not jobbers when they did all that, especially when there was one title. Usos vs New Day will be on the preshow this Sunday and it is one of the best built feuds.
They can talk all they want but I’ve given you names who found just as much success if not more.

          • Darryl lee

Really? Those 2 were losing on television left and right. And the tag team titles don’t mean much in wwe.

        • Jaded

Michelle can hang with any of the horse women in the ring and Layla and eve are both better than Alexa

        • Gavin

Alexa? Yikes. You must think whoever gets forced down your throat is the best.

    • Typical Heel

It wasn’t all bad, we got to get sexy ass women who could wrestle like Candice Michelle, Michelle McCool, Layla, Eve.. and women who were great in other areas such as Maryse, Christy Hemme & Maria, not every women from the search was a dud

      • Darryl lee

Yes it was all bad, we got several months of horrific television. And the winners of that competition were ultimately meaningless as they didn’t do anything worth of note and left the wwe shortly thereafter

        • Typical Heel

I agree instead of them having ice cream thong contests and bra & panties on a stripper pole matches, they should have been seriously training them to wrestle like tough enough

    • Gavin

Please. That brought in female WWE legends.

  • Gail-Rollins Fan

Really miss Layla. She deserved way better towards the end of her career. Her matches with Beth were IMO the best matches contested for the tramp stamp belt. They really made something out of nothing.

    • Don ?

“tramp stamp belt” Omg I can’t unsee it now. That damned title really did look like a tramp stamp. ?

  • Aye Mate

Lowkey one of the most underrated women in the history of WWE. Loved this woman’s energy. Layla had a great knack for the craft: athletic, natural rhythm and timing and, also, she understood the innate silliness of wrestling. She’ll forever be slept on thanks to WWE’s unfortunate misuse of her talents post-LayCool, but some of her ring work in 2012 alone was a real glimpse that she could have slotted right into the Takeover climate with ease.

Anyway, I hope she’s leading a happy life after retirement :)

    • jcott3

I still firmly believe WWE had big plans for Layla when Lay-Cool were breaking up, but she had the bad luck of tearing her ACL & MCL. By the time she returned almost a year later, she had cooled off too much.

      • Aye Mate

Even then the groundwork was laid bare: Beth Phoenix was honing in on setting a new record with her title reign, bemoaning a lack of competition. Instead of giving Layla a momentous comeback in challenging her, Nikki Bella got a complimentary title reign instead.

  • A One of a Kind Collectible

Just a question, should/when they’re inducted into the hall of fame, do you think LayCool will go in together or will they enter separately?

    • jcott3

I would rather see them go in together, as they were more over as a unit than either was solo.

    • Together.

      • A One of a Kind Collectible

        Forever Flawless!!

    • Typical Heel

I so freaking hope they’ll go in together, I think they will be the 1st female tag team in history, and with the both of their accomplishments together, it very much so legitimizes them as deserving to be legends

    • Gail-Rollins Fan

Michelle will go in by herself unless she demands that Layla go in with her.

  • I don’t think people give Layla enough credit. She was REALLY over with fans during this time despite the fact that she just started wrestling; and she eventually became pretty solid in the ring. Also, I really REALLY miss her curly hair; I think it made her stand out more. I wish WWE didn’t force her to straighten it.

    • Typical Heel

I loved her with her natural hair, it was a shame when I heard they were gonna force her to start wearing that straight weave

    • Don ?

They forced her to straighten her hair?!?!

  • Typical Heel

And then she went on to become a LEGEND, I Loved Layla so much when she was in WWE, can’t wait till they put Laycool in the HOF, hopefully Mickie James will induct them

    • Gail-Rollins Fan

I don’t see them going in as a duo. They’ll want Michelle to get her solo nod, and Layla will be the one to induct her. Not saying they don’t deserve to go in as a duo (they do) but I don’t see Vince doing it that way..

      • Typical Heel

They better not screw Layla over like that, they were TOGETHER during like all of the BOTH of their accomplishments, the last women’s champion, the 1st divas champion, the 1st extreme rules (I refuse to call it an extreme makeover) match, the 1st tables match…

        • Gavin

It’s sad that Michelle gets all the credit. She was a good wrestler, but she never got any crowd reaction. She would have been stuck running in bikinis and playing tennis if it weren’t for Layla’s charisma.

  • Gavin

A legend! The Diva Search really brought in some great women.
