On this day in history:

August 30th, 2004 | Stacy Keibler welcomed the remaining Diva Search contestants to the ring for a “Diss the Diva” competition. Christy Hemme, Maria Kanellis, Carmella DeCesare, Amy Weber and Joy Giovanni were all lined up in the ring, ready to dish out some verbal slaps. Before the competition could begin, though, an elimination took place and Maria was cut from their ranks, giving a double middle finger salute to Carmella as she left. It wasn’t the last abuse Carmella would take, as Christy, Joy and Amy focused their dissing on her, serving each other softballs like “You need to learn how to take a spanking!” while calling Carmella a gutterslut and feigning slaps at her.

What are your memories of this moment?

Also occurring today in history:
* 8/30/98 – Edge and Sable defeated Marc Mero and Jacqueline at SummerSlam 1998.

  • Darryl lee

Ah, the diva search. Who the hell thought this competition and the way they formated it was a good idea? This whole thing set the womens movement back a good 50 years.

    • Rosanna

You have to remember that wwe is world wrestling entertainment. Not everything is going to be about wrestling sometimes it’s about the entertainment. It was entertaining!

      • Darryl lee

No it wasn’t. Who in their right minds would find any of those segments entertaining? And exactly how this competition is portraying the women in a “CLASSY” manner?

        • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Classy isn’t always entertaining. Plus at least there were still wrestlers on the roster (Trish, Victoria, Molly, etc). I agree I wished this were more focused on wrestling but we’ve come a long way from this. Plus at least the audience was into it

          • Darryl lee

Of course they’re into it. They’re all in their underwear.

          • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Because it’s sexy. Sex is a part of entertainment. At this time the wwe had a good balance of actual wrestlers and fan service eye candy girls. This is why the Golden Era is STILL better than the “revolution” today. Now we have horrendous booking. Stale title wins. The same 4 women being used while everyone else sits in the back and Tweets’s for a “chance”. At this time every woman was utilized in one way or another and we had actual stories progress each week

          • deethy @ LJ

I love that you see the past through these rose-colored glasses because plenty of women talked about how tough it was in the WWE during this time- see Molly Holly, Gail Kim, Victoria, Ivory, Jazz, etc.

        • Rosanna

Who said wwe was ever classy? They just got out of the attitude era wwe wasn’t PG then. The whole point of the diva search is to find who stands out for entertainment purposes. Not every diva search girl was going to be a wrestler I mean look at Lauren and Rochelle Amy and Joy. Not everyone is wrestlers some people are valets backstage personalities. The segment was fun and funny and that’s where the E in wwe comes in world wrestling ENTERTAINMENT.

          • Darryl lee

That’s my point. its not ENTERTAINING in the LEAST.

  • Despite people seeing this as a low or messy, Diva search produced more talents than Tough Enough, which had a serious format and approach to wrestling. Proof that it doesn’t mean anything.

    • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

Honestly that just shows how sexist WWE was/is. This was an eye candy contest. Tough Enough had a better message and was more about heart.

  • LIQUORICE

    Such an Iconic moment !
Those 4 horses could never and the neckbeard wrestling smarks have been found dead by their keyboards !!

Lmao but in all seriousness I remember when this video came up here and there on this site, everyone laughed and had a good time just watching this mess of a segment

Now…. people are way too triggered and offended by this and will call it a disgrace or whatever

    • LIQUORICE

If you don’t like what I said well #SueMe

  • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Iconic! Bring this the fuck BACK!!! Carmella had all the girls pressed. “Who tired out for playboy and they Laughed!” “Yea shake your fat ass”.

Low key loved how all the girls were so excited TJ be there and Carmella stood around like a stiff mannequin so uninterested but still made it to the finale. True queen. Stay mad girls ?

  • OJ Von Erich

This was an iconic moment, the hatred was real here, I mean Joy Giovanni will always hold a special place in my heart & Christy became a star who sadly never quite hit her full potential with those holes in the road, it’s also quite amazing to see how far some of the Diva Search girls came despite their placement.

I mean yes, we’re now in an era where this is laughable & demeaning, but I will always be forever grateful for the Diva Search.

  • Wrestling.fan.from.France

    Trash.

  • ?BurningUpInsideOfUs?

The Golden Era will always trump the Revolution and this is just another reason why.

    • TorrieTrishStacyLita

Exactly!! Idk ppl don’t get it this was the perfect formula. We had wrestlers, fan service eye candy girls, great managers, consistent feuds, good booking and every woman was utilized. This “revolution” had now become horrendous

  • #VindictiveBitch

    HISTORIC

  • Summer_Slay #?aryn?errell

While Im not a fan of any of these girls besides maybe Christy.
Diva search produced some of the best female wrestlers we had: Michelle McCool, Candice Michelle, Layla, Eve, Taryn, Brooke Adams/Tessmacher.

Some that couldve done better with more training: Christy, Ashley, Maria, Maryse, Cameron, Veronica, Devin, Lana, Eva Marie and Jojo.

    And Rosa Mendes

    • jcott3

Brooke, Christy and Taryn/Tiffany didn’t fully blossom until they went to TNA, and Maria had to go to ROH to reinvent herself (she had been permanently branded as a “Playboy girl” and “the airheaded redhead” in WWE).

On a more positive note, Michelle McCool was one of the few women from the first DS who didn’t come from a modeling or casting agency.

    • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

Lana Eva and JoJo were apart of the diva search?

      • Summer_Slay #?aryn?errell

Yeah a untelevised one along with Devin Taylor, Veronica Lane and one more NXT girl but i cant recall her name.

        • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

          Never heard of that

  • Don ?

The Diva Search girls may not have been able to produce good wrestling matches but they sure did entertain us in other ways. Joy and Amy especially. They played their roles VERY well on Smackdown and put Torrie Wilson aka Miss Smackdown in the backseat.

I still can’t believe Joy was released so soon. The girl oozed potential. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8281a43a2a92784d555c70029f8dc883e70f11ca20ec4ff23b9c7a16a80379bf.gif

  • #BrieForPeace ?

Joy Giovanni invented Woman Slap #2

  • DayOneISH!

Wow I forgot all about this segment lol

  • PYM #TakeoverSmackdown

I think Edge and Sable vs Marc Mero and Jacqueline is far more important and historic than this garbage
