Hola NXT fans and welcome to this week’s (delayed, sorry!) NXT Redux! This week, we are treated to not one but TWO matches from the NXT Women’s division. Lucky us! The ongoing saga between Ruby Riot and the Iconic Duo continues as Billie Kay and Peyton Royce have challenged Riot to a rematch from a few weeks ago. Will Nikki Cross reappear to stand alongside Riot? Elsewhere, the inaugural Mae Young Classic winner Kairi Sane makes her NXT debut in a match-up against Aliyah.

We kick off our show with our scheduled rematch contest. As with last time, Ruby Riot is out first riding solo while the Iconic Duo are styling and profiling through their entrance. Let’s call this a handicap match for now.

The bell sounds off and the NXT Universe are quick to cheer on for Riot much to Kay’s distaste. Kay starts things off with a Fireman Carry takedown to Riot and into an armbar. Riot gets to her fight and shakes free from Kay’s grip. Riot hits a dropkick which leads to Royce asking for a tag. Riot quickly rolls Peyton up for a two count. She adds an arm drag and body slam as Kay rants from the ring apron.

Riot knocks her off with a forearm and springboards from the second rope for a senton splash onto Royce. Riot earns a two count. Peyton tackles Riot to a corner where a tag is made. Kay goes for a clothesline but Riot manages to reverse this into a crucifix pin for a two count. The women meet at the opposite turnbuckle where Riot goes for her signature Deadly Nightshade but instead gets dropped face first onto the mat by Kay.

Riot is dragged back to the Iconic Duo’s corner, where she is kicked by Kay while Royce adds in the insults. Another tag is made and Royce begins to mock Riot by tossing her to a corner and asking her to make a tag to her non existent partner. Peyton makes the tag and the Iconic Duo continue to play on the numbers game with a double front suplex to Riot for the two count. A frustrated Kay begins to argue with the referee.

As the double team attacks continue, here comes Nikki Cross! Peyton spots this and begins to wear Riot down with a grounded headlock. Riot gets to her feet and breaks free of Peyton’s hold. A double running face crusher lays out both women, setting up for a hot tag scenario!

Despite some hesitation, Riot makes a tag to Cross who unleashes a fury of right forearms, a running cross body and a reverse DDT. Cross goes for the cover but Royce is able to make the save. The Iconic Duo take Cross to their corner where a tag is made leading to a seeing Peyton drive Cross face first to Kay’s knee.

Riot finds her way back to the match by tripping Royce when she runs the ropes and pulling her to the outside ring. Back in the ring, Cross rolls Kay up into a pin for a near three count. Cross then climbs on Kay’s back and maneuvers her to Riot’s corner where a tag is made. Riot climbs the top rope of a turnbuckle and a double dropkick takes down the Iconic Duo! A Pele Kick lays out Kay and the team of Riot and Cross are victorious once again!

Busy business woman Zelina Vega is also spotted this week as NXT cameras to get her thoughts on NXT GM William Regal granting Johnny Gargano a rematch against her associate Andrade Almas. She says that Gargano is still being haunted by the breakup from his former tag team partner Tommaso Ciampa. She says Almas won their previous bout fair and square. They have no problem giving Gargano his rematch as each passing victory against NXT’s Golden Boy will only get them closer to the NXT Championship.

When asked how she would feel if Alam lost this match, Vega brushed the question off and says they helped make Gargano “relevant” again by sharing the same ring with him at TakeOver: Brooklyn. Do your thing Señorita Vega.

And finally, we move on to the NXT debut of Kairi Sane:

The Pirate Princess is welcomed to warm ovation as she salutes the crown in down right adorable fashion! How can you not love Karia Sane!? In the ring, we spy Sane’s opponent Aliyah already warming up for this match. Damn… not even an entrance for Aliyah?

The women tie-up, trading sequences until Sane hits a back elbow shot into a headlock. Aliyah sends Sane to the ropes to create some separation but gets taken down with a running forearm for a one count. Sane whips Aliyah to a corner but misses an oncoming attack. Aliyah earns a one count of her own after landing a back breaker.

Aliyah stays in control with kicks to the back. She runs the ropes, connecting a rolling snap neck breaker that earns a two count. Aliyah works in a pendulum back breaker following by a bow and over over the knee. Sane fights through with a knee shot to Aliyah’s head and manages to find an opening to land a spear for a two count.

Sane follows up with chops to the chest to a corner and topping it off with a sliding forearm. The NXT Universe pops as Sane climbs the top rope to set up for her world famous Elbow Drop. She lands and is victorious.

After her NXT TV debut match, Sane says she is so happy to be a part of the NXT roster and promises to become the next NXT Women’s Champion come NXT TakeOver: Houston.

It is also announced that next week’s episode of NXT will host a Triple Threat match featuring Liv Morgan, Nikki Cross, and Peyton Royce in a qualifying match for the NXT Women’s Championship.

In WWE.com interview, Liv Morgan says she is ready to make the most of the opportunity presented to her next week.

Thoughts: The Women’s Tag Team match was pretty much a repeat from the tag match two weeks ago. The Iconic Duo playing into the numbers game over Riot until Cross’ appearance to even out the playing field. These four women have truly been the ones to help keep things interesting as sort of the ‘mid-carders’ outside the NXT Women’s Title picture. As fun as the match was, there are still some questions that are left unanswered.

What was Cross’ reasoning to helping Riot, who has gone on record to say that Cross isn’t even considered a friend to her. There’s an ongoing story brewing here but with Cross in next week’s qualifying match, it would be appear that her unspoken friendship with Riot will take a seat in the back burner for the time being.

The Kairi/Aliyah match was short and sweet, which is pretty much a format when introducing a new name to NXT audience. Even through her entrance, you can just feel that Sane is being polished to become NXT’s newest and biggest babyface! Credit to Aliyah for helping make the match feel more even out versus a match that could’ve felt like a squash.

I’m looking forward to these upcoming qualifying NXT Women’s Championship matches. It’s sort of a reset button for the NXT Women’s Division post Asuka Era. We want to make these matches feel important up until the big show at Houston and with some plenty of time until then, there will be plenty to look forward to.

What did you think of this week’s episode of NXT? Are you enjoying the on and off relationship between Nikki Cross and Ruby Riot? Looking forward to the upcoming NXT Women’s Championship qualifying match? Let us know in the comments below!

    1. Call up the Iconic Duo to the MR already…you don’t seem to want to put the title on either one, and there’s SO many good storylines I imagine them having!
    2. Is there any hope for Aliyah? Typically, newly-signed talent jobs for around a year (Asuka, Ember, Ruby, Nikki are exceptions, the 4HW were the rule) until they get a good storyline…but first she loses the MYC qualifying match, and now this in short order…should she just ask for her release at this point?
    3. I’m just biding my time for this storyline to play out so that Zelina can finally get to WRESTLE already!

  • A?.

Am I the only one who has been enjoying nxt way more than both MR shows? Only thing I dislike is the treatment Billie and Aliyah get, but we’ve getting lots of stuff.

    • ???

No you’re not the only one ! NXT became just as good as we knew ! That our NXT yesssss !!!

It became horrible in 2016 after Alexa , Nia and Carmella left .. but now it is finally became better !

I think both Raw and NXT are doing well right now, only SDL that is horrible right now (No story, No build up , No feuds , Nothing)

      • A?.

Yes, Raw too! But what I dislike about Raw is that it’s always the same people winning (Bayley and Sasha) when it could be Emma or Alicia but oh well, glad they’re using them all and having multiple segments.

        SD…moving on.

        • conan_kun

Another bad thing for Raw is bookings are inconsistent, examples first they announce Charlotte vs Sasha at Clash of Champions last year, but then suddenly put Bayley into the card, Emma interacts with Dana at GBOF kickoff but never follow up, Nia turns on Alexa then realigns with Alexa without explanation.

          • Number One

Yeah, that last one upset me the most. We were set with a Nia/Alexa feud, then all of a sudden, they’re buddy-buddy again. I swear, they think we have memories like goldfish

    • Joseph

Aliyah is only 22 so her time will come.

  • Evan #KeepIt?

Spoilers, but here is what I want them to do in NXT!!! Please read it if you have a chance :)))) This is long as hell but please read https://twitter.com/dakotaskai/status/916679198714089474

  • conan_kun

Will Aliyah pull the Sasha Banks route, early day Sasha was just a generic babyface who they didn’t push at all, then it changed everything after she turns heel.

The timing and camerawork were perfect

    • Francisco Baguer

I like that idea. I also wish Liv Morgan did the same to make her stand out from being copy of Carmella.

    • Laquane Anderson

I gotta completely disagree. this Spear looked soooooo weak. I actually kinda laughed wen she did it. The impact wasnt there. It looked like she just kinda tripped over and bumped her.

    • Jo9834

Aaliyah sold this horribly in my opinion, if you look at how she bumped she literally fell backwards. I only say that as Aliyah is one of the best bumpers/sellers on the female roster.

Kairi is all sorts of awesome, the kids will eat her gimmick up like no other. A pirate princess persona is just a licence to print money.

Aliyah is so talented. Every time she wrestles she modifies her style to suit her opponent and that’s something very rare. Not to mention her arsenal of moves she has displayed since her match with Carmella at Wrestlemania 32 Axess all the way to her match with Kairi here is insane. I hope they give her a good story and direction because quite honestly if they have nothing for her I can definitely see her tearing it up in Stardom and PROGRESS in no time.

As for the tag match, I didn’t see the point of them rehashing the whole match from a few weeks ago but this time around the wrestling was a lot less sloppy and a lot more quality. I loved Ruby’s springboard senton.

  • Shady

Also, I really like Billie. She’s an amazing character and I am a huge fan of the Iconic Duo but I feel like she’s been in developmental for 2 years and I haven’t seen her improve very much. She’s not bad by any means but as a massive Peyton fan I want her to catch up so she doesn’t get left behind

    • conan_kun

Now Billie always eats a pin during single matches and tag matches, at this point she’s looked like today Summer Rae.

      • Gayomi.

        Billie sweetie I’m so sorry

    • Gayomi.

      bitch stfu you wanna fight?

  • YonceLuvsDivas

Baby that highlight on Zelina is everything!

But anyway you m so happy to finally be in the post Asuka era. Omg we finally get more action and different women are being pushed. Though I feel the Asuka era hindered a lot of the talent. Like they’ve been stuck at the same level. No real evolving except for the women who have competed against Asuka and remained on tv almost weekly. So I’m kind of exited to see where the other ladies can go from here.

    • wysna

Very true. I love Asuka but I don’t think that her push did anyone any favors. They could’ve given Nia the chance to be champ before moving her to MR. They could’ve given the Iconic Duo a crack at the spotlight. Nikki as champ terrorizing the locker room would’ve also been interesting. Heck, Ember, despite their lazy build up of her character would’ve benefited from some time as champ. Asuka should’ve at least lost her second match to Nia because at that point she was already formidable and the other girls needed to be built up. She could’ve also lost during that fatal fourway with the duo without looking weak. There were so many missed opportunities

      • YonceLuvsDivas

Right!! Hopefully they don’t make this mistake on the main roster with Asuka.

    • SlaomiSlays

People on this site litterally cheweed me out when I said that. Her reign really hurt the division. It would have helped if she put someone over but because that didn’t happen it made everyone of them look weak.

      • Gayomi.

oop tbh I said this too

      • ralfikh

Agree. She winning every single match doesnt help any women at all

      • YonceLuvsDivas

Right! As good as it is for Asuka to say she’s been champ for like two years, that last year totally killed the momentum of the division. We was somewhat fine when the division had Nia, Carmella, Alexa, Bayley, Eva, Dana and Emma. At that they was able to do more wit the ladies I named before they left.

  • Rosanna

Aliyah you’re going to stop using Alicia’a moveset! First the Notheren-lights suplex and now her backbreaker?

    • Joseph

Every wrestler does a backbreaker its not like Alicia owns the rights to the move and same goes for the Notheren-Lights Suplex.

      • Ok but those are her two signature moves and she’s currently on the roster. It’s not cute.

        • Joseph

A backbreaker is a very common move, Roderick Strong is in NXT and his gimmick has been for years “The Messiah of the Backbreaker” so are you gonna complain when does it too?

          • Maybe if you read what was written you’d know it’s not just the backbreaker.

    • Jo9834

Funnily enough Aliyah has also stolen Alicia Foxes booking it seems!. But I agree, moves should be unique to each wrestler, no matter what roster they are on. Aliyah wouldn’t be able to do that backbreaker on most girls anyway as they would be too tall.

      • saul de la efe

” Aliyah has also stolen Alicia Foxes booking it seems”

  • Don ?

I found this week’s tag team match more enjoyable than the last despite Billie eating another pinfall. I wonder if Cross and Wuby’s storyline is filler or will continue after a new women’s champion is crowned.

Kairi Sane vs Aliyah was simple and sweet. Both dished even offense so it wasn’t a total squash. I felt Aliyah was purposefully not selling Kairi’s offense towards the end, but whatever. Aliyah could maybe benefit from a heel turn soon with the MYC debuting. She isn’t MR ready so I hope she isn’t lost in the new shuffle.

I’m not really feeling Liv. I think if she were heel I’d like her more. I find her character a tad too obnoxious.

    • DayOneISH!

I agree especially about Liv I don’t find her a likeable babyface.Shes not a cute adorable babyface either she’s basically the female version of Enzo amore and I can’t stand him.

      • Number One

Thankfully, the rest of us see how phenomenal Liv is and don’t agree with your nonsense. Liv needs a heel turn, so does Aliyah

    • IconicTrio

Aliyah’s already lost in the shuffle. There needs to be a big change. What that change should be I’m not sure.

Never liked Liv, she drags down the quality of any match she’s in. I know out of the NXT women featured on TV she has the least experience, but that’s not my problem. She’s like Carmella without the redeeming qualities.

  • Xaos

I’m in the minority but I prefer Billie over Peyton. Wish one day she gets the push she deserves. Still love them both tho

    • IconicTrio

On a superficial level she has more of a ‘star’ look abou her than Peyton and at the beginning when she was more mysterious, like Malificent or something, she stood out too. Wrestling wise I felt like she either doesn’t work as well as a heel or is being held back, because she put on more entertaining matches as a jobber in 2015 than she ever has since she *properly* debuted.

I think Billie should either be turned face after Peyton turns on her or become a heel manager for an upper card male. She’s not cutting it for me personally atm :/

Peyton’s move set for a heel on the other hand is entertaining, not face like and still manages to look feminine while she wrestles without looking like a ‘diva’, I appreciate that skill.

  • #FlairfortheGold

Off topic…Summer Rae is possibly hinting at retirement and Bayley may turn heel

    • ???

OMG really ? Where did you read this about Summer ?

    • Shady

I’m here for both of these things happening

    • Number One

They’re really going to turn Bayley?! Wow

  • Love Aliyah, she deserves better.
Also they’ve done a terrible job with Ember after her loss at Brooklyn, she hasn’t appeared at all. She should win in Houston because if she doesn’t she’ll look like a flop.

  • Oh and that tag match was absolutely pointless. Looking at the spoilers what was the point? Billie deserves better.

  • Jo9834

I know this is pretty off topic and a lil out there by MAN Peyton has a great butt lol, she’s a star through and through, cannot get enough of her or watching her wrestle . Ruby really needs to stop sticking her tongue out, its actually really off putting, and takes away from her entrance, other than that she’s a ring general and a pleasure to watch this week. Billie still isn’t doing it for me, she’s beautiful, but she’s so clunky and awkward in the ring, just watch the bumps she takes near the end, the drop kick and pele kick from Ruby.

I really feel for Aliyah at this point, I have no idea what they are doing with her, or what she’s doing with herself, but it seems as though she is quickly becoming the Alicia Fox of NXT, she’s there…whenever they need and nothing else.

Kairi is a STAR, Asuka wasn nowhere near as likeable or bubbly as her so it’ll be amazing to see the crowds eat her up alive.

  • Gayomi.

ugh why does Billie have to continuously job to the trash every week.

  • awesome nxt this week and it was nice to see kairi sane

  • Kvngbalor

I wonder how the marks that swore Kairi was going to be Asuka 2.0 feel cause she’s nothing of the sort i read someone say the kids will eat up her pirot gimmick im not sure esp if or when she gets to the main roster i can see it as a gimmick that got over in NXT bur fails on the main roster

    • I think the gimmick will succeed on the main roster still because it isn’t actually that literal. She is the pirate princess because she comes out in a leather coat, spinning a wheel, in nautical themed gear, not because she’s stealing gear from the other women, and has a peg leg and a parrot.

She could still be Asuka 2.0 though, it’s not about her ring style, it’s about her dominance and win lose record, her burying the rest of the division, and her getting precedent over girls who have been there for years.

  • It

Whoever doesn’t like Nikki Cross is dumb. She brings such a new dimension and new kinds of stories! She could be the Mick Foley/Cactus Jack/Mankind of the women’s division.

Peyton is star, she wipe off her indie style & get in WWE style so well. Billie is great wrestler, but she can’t polish to WWE style, which make her look awkward sometimes. Great to see Aliyah as Hell, which she suit better and into it. Her ringwork is better except selling, the big NO!
