On this day in history:

October 17th, 1999 | At 1999’s No Mercy, Chyna became the first woman to ever win the Intercontinental Championship. Her foe Jeff Jarrett had been on a misogynistic tear, touting men as the superior sex, so it seemed appropriate that she would finally put him in his place in a Good Housekeeping match–one that brought into play things like an ironing board, a broom and a mop. It was Jarrett’s trusty guitar that signaled the end for him, though, and after it was smashed on his head, he was down for the count. Chyna pinned him, becoming the first female Intercontinental Champion.

What are your memories of this moment?

  • Yaaaaas! I can’t tell you what happened first, but this and Sable Sablebombing Marc Mero are my earliest memories of women’s wrestling, and I have been hooked ever since.

I love Chyna and I love this moment. Even if when this aired I thought Chyna was Xena haha.

I’m kind of conflicted with chyna winning the IC title.

I know some people think Chyna winning it was where the IC title began losing its luster. To others, it was a young Rocky Maivia winning it in 1997 when the WWF were doing everything in their power to smash him over as the next big thing, and fans wouldn’t accept him.

I didn’t have a problem with her being IC champion, but I hated it when she and Chris Jericho wound up being co-champions.

Woah. You’re the first one that told me that Rocky maivia was the one who made the title lose his luster. He was booked relatively strong as champ.

And chyna winning the title on one hand, felt like an inspiration to all future female wrestlers. As they see someone of their Gender winning a title for another gender for the first time.
On the other hand. Her winning the IC title like you said, was the start of the steady decline for that title. But also. This storyline and chyna winning was supposed to be a victory for all women and they would finally get the respect that is equivalent to the men. Unfortunately for them, that wouldn’t have come until 16 years later.
