Ladies and Gentlemen, as you may have noticed or seen already, we are no longer doing our weekly Reduxes and PPV reviews as we want to stay on top of all the wonderful news in the women’s wrestling world. However, we still love to hear your opinions and see if they reflect ours… which means that I can reveal the return of Diva-Dirt’s Fast 5!

If you fancy a bit of nostalgia, just want to brush up on quirky women’s wrestling knowledge or even if you want to ridicule our choices then this is the place for you! Diva Dirt’s Fast 5 will take on a theme and present to you – in no particular order – five related things from the world of women’s wrestling.

What a better way to kick off the new Fast 5 than with a rundown of our top 5 ‘Unexpected Debuts’… since this is a debut of sorts! (Or is this a return?) Either way, news sites are forever poised and ready to get the tip off when someone is going to make their debut. Over recent years social media has changed the game with people revealing they are in arenas, but even still companies can still stay one step ahead of us.

Last month on RAW we saw the unexpected debuts of Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville! A day later we then had the unexpected debuts of Ruby Riott, Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan on SmackDown Live. There were barely any leaks on social media, we had no signs of it across news sites and it seemed that they pulled of the surprise. However, this has happened a couple of other times across wrestling promotions, but while some debuts can be unexpected, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s memorable!

Let’s see who made this returning Fast 5!

  • Thank you for more great content. Can’t forget these two. I miss these kinds of debuts so much and I still want to know what Mickie did to Beth lol

Seriously! With how NXT is basically a third brand, everyone just debuts on the basis of their hype in NXT.

      • Izzy4lw

I also think though that BECAUSE people debut based on their hype in NXT; people have now become so used to the rookies being amazing off the bat that now when they debut people expect perfection – So when we do get surprise debuts like Ruby/Liv/Sarah/Mandy/Sonya, people want to come for them for ‘not being ready’ even though that’s exactly how we used to get the women- brand new and nervous, and got to watch them grow into the women they were; people don’t have the patience for that anymore sadly. Hell, If the Bella twins/K2/Layla/Eve/Michelle McCool/Candice Michelle had debuted now as they did back then, they’d have gotten eaten alive by the very people that stan them and hate Mandy/Sarah/Liv/Ruby/Sonya for not being perfect.

        • Like Mike

No yeah you hit the nail on the head too, I think that a big difference to is that back then, the inexperienced women debuted in other roles. Ex. Joy and Michelle as “staff members” and they begun their journey as valet’s and characters before becoming wrestlers, they debuted in the ring with purpose. Where as Mandy and Sonya, they debuted as wrestlers so them not being ready was more obvious given the botches and what not. Look at Eve Torres, she was a backstage interviewer while she trained, and then she debuted in a big match because Michelle attacked her. I am not as harsh on the new girls as a lot of people on this site, I like the new additions, but I do miss when there use to be more story involved to why they were brought in. Like Mickie being a Trish super fan ext.

          • Izzy4lw

Mickie and Trish was a once in a lifetime storyline I feel like – it was the sort of campy, too big for this world storyline that was not only consistently told, but also brilliantly booked. To top it off, you had the two best character workers in the division at the time, with Trish and Mickie’s storytelling in and out of the ring being superb, and their acting/mic skills being very strong.

I also believe that we no longer get the roles for new people though for two reasons – we cant have anything too over the top a-la K2, Mickie James, Beth Phoenix, etc. because Kayfabe has all but died in WWE, especially with Total Divas forcing more reality-centric characters. And second, even the innocuous “yoga instructor/Massage therapist/wedding planner” route won’t work imo because of the revolution. Since 2015, the women have been billed as athletes – the big push that WWE went with in marketing the women’s division was no longer eye candy; women were not just there to ‘stand around looking pretty’ they got involved; The push for women to once again ‘be wrestlers’ and the marketing campaign shouting about women’s athleticism, talent, and dominance from on high means women are thrown into the deep end because to have a wrestler masquerading as a yoga instructor is no longer in line with WWE’s marketing strategy. Basically, WWE is too one note in either direction; when they were divas they were only eye candy and a side show, and now they’re only wrestlers; neither option which leaves wiggle room for individuals to flourish who don’t fit the mold.

          • Like Mike

            Perfectly put.

          • I think Carmella is the last one to have that kind of debut. Went from a “hairdresser” to wrestler lol. It was really entertaining.

          • KatyaMenelli

even Jillian made her in-ring debut with purpose.

      • Right, the most recent debuts were surprising but I HATE when they debut in groups and limit the story. I much prefer a single debut where one storyline begins instead of countless tag matches.

        • Like Mike

Yeah debuting in these groups takes away from the individual in my opinion, we don’t really get to learn anything as them as characters.

          • Gerg

Based on the past debuts like Mike/Maria, Apollo and Asuka, it seems like Creative had no plans for the superstars’ arrival. It’s like they know this so they just address them as NXT graduates rather a mystery/storyline plot progression like Kane or Mickie

  • Royalty ?

I think it’s sad that wwe released Angel because of her tattoos so i heard and one of the trainers was extremely hard on her. But they kept, Kelly, Brooke, Rosa, Tiffany, Krissy Vaine etc.. Like gorl..

    • YonceLuvsDivas

In the long the right decision was made. Angelina became a star in TNA and the other became stars in WWE except Tiffany who went to TNA and Kris’s who never went anywhere.

      • Royalty ?

you’re right you’re right but Angel would have did that the damn thing in wwe. At least she paved the way for people Ruby because otherwise she wouldn’t have been there if it wasn’t for Angelina.

        • Wrestling.fan.from.France

I can’t really agree with that tbh since Angelina was very much “diva”-esque in terms of overall presentation and character. Girls like Lita, AJ or Paige would be more convenient since they didn’t entirely fit in.

      • Royalty ?

but still like the officials where way harder than they are now. It might have seen like a cake walk back then with the diva era but it definitely wasn’t along with a male dominated world. Her tattoos should have gotten her fired to begin with although she did shine in TNA she isn’t mainstream like Trish, Lita, Torrie etc and to think she would have debuted along with some of them but SOMEONE stopped her contract. And even though velvet is trash she should have waited to instead of jumping on the TNA train if she really wanted to be in wwe.

        • KatyaMenelli

LOL WWE was never going to sign Velvet tbh. They had her being “plant” or a jobber to get other superstar’s gimmicks over for a year and a half on either RAW or Heat. Then, they brought up onto the Diva Search last minute just to cut her and once that happened, her WWE appearances stopped. WWE was just bullshitting her because a lot of her friends were getting developmental contracts or have received one already.

    • Juan

Angelina, Tiffany, and Brooke became stars in TNA, while Kelly, Rosa and Krissy flopped in WWE. I’d say things worked out.

      • Royalty ?

You’re right but Angel would have been mainstream like most of the wwe girls. Only people that are like mainstream around the global thanks to wwe+ tna are Awesome Kong and Gail Kim. Angel is a amazing worker she would have done amazing things in wwe and went to hold many championship but her tattoos got her CUT.

        • KatyaMenelli

Angelina would’ve been perfect for WWE at the time with the tattoos. Angel would’ve had a cult following due to the fact that her look was so common during that time but she just pulled it out amazingly. And to add, she was an amazing wrestler.

  • iOwnThatSonOfABitch

It’s not even a debate, Kelly Kelly’s “Don’t Stop” that she had for a minute was THEE bop.

And i always loved Jacqueline’s reactions to Kong. She was never scared. She was like always psyched to throw down lol

    • KatyaMenelli

oh, wwe had her beating up guys plenty of times. so did wcw.

  • Zeek Jones

kharma’s debut and Jazz debut will forever be my all time favorites!

    • John Finnie

Ah jazz i remember the rumour was that sharmell was going to be the sixth entrant But she tore her ACL & Jazz got the debut ( it was a rumour so take it as that) but i hated jazz that night lol. I did hope jazz & lita feuded & that their past ECW feud would make it to wwe

      • Izzy4lw

I saw Jazz as a 12 year old little gay boy and shrieked when she started beating everyone up. I lived for her as a villain!

        • John Finnie

Omg i loved her after she came back & took out Molly & Trish

          • Izzy4lw

YES! She was the ultimate powerhouse/brawler type. I really wish they’d let a full blown feud happen between Victoria and Jazz, because I think since both were of equal strength and known for being brutal wrestlers, it would have been a fantastic program.

          • AlexV

Not sure how I would’ve booked that at the time since the matches they had mostly had little crowd reactions. There was some buzz sure, but not enough to have WWE green light a feud which would be interesting. I would like to hear how some might have booked it considering Trish was the big babyface of the time before Lita came back.

          • John Finnie

Yes they should have blown the house down with a feud with Jazz & Victoria

      • AlexV

I believe that was the then rumored plan before Lita broke her neck and Jazz tore her knee. At that time the alleged plan was Lita vs Jazz at Wrestlemania for the Championship and then they added Trish to make it more interesting since she had be feuding with Jazz before that and also Wrestlemania was in her hometown that year. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/435d4366ab643880cdc37b1ea3ea07b55163cde14c15a039ae932c15925cdbd4.gif

      • iloveTorrie

Wow I’ve never heard that one. But i did know that sharmell was there with them for a bit as an interviewer. Would’ve been really cool to see her mix it up with trish, Lita, Jazz aNd the rest

        • KatyaMenelli

omg would’ve loved to see Sharmell wrestle Molly, Ivory or Trish

      • Zeek Jones

me lol man that would have been a dope fued

  • For this 5 I think my favorite is Tara’s/Victoria, It was totally unexpected for me. My favorites that aren’t on this list definitely Kharma and Mickie James.

  • AlexV

Good effort DivaDirt! I like Paige, Lita, Mickie James, Alexa Bliss and Victoria’s debut the most! Well, Tara in TNA.

Paige – Fresh face as anti diva as AJ was and literally embodied what the now, women’s evolution was to become. Great debut!

Lita because she suddenly appeared as Essa Rios valet and boy was that ever a pleasant surprise! The Revolution begins and we didn’t know it at the time. Legendary! The WWE’s IT girl of her time.

Mickie James – Like Paige she breathed energy into what was becoming a a stale division and her debut was pretty surprising.

Alexa Bliss made her presence felt the minute her music hit and she got on the mic. I knew I was looking at a breakout star.

Victoria in TNA. I was sick of the TBP bullies and when Victoria came in and cleaned house, that Widows Peak was electric and for myself an unexpected debut. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/183ca86b0f59f7c02fc04bad7f0476792475b71a37b1300cca51451f45fe2a9c.gif

???HE SAID LITA WAS WWES IT GIRLLETS NOT FORGET TRISH WAS THE IT GIRL FROM HER DEBUT TO HER RETIREMENT

      • AlexV

I don’t think anyone else is laughing with you. ? Lita was a huge star of her time and was in the thick of things since the start along with Trish. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/985eb5c7ff07650924ddc5dcc408ccd09a9c784077a8130d4a07e956210bc3d8.gif

      • GLAMPIREQUEEN

Both were IT girls, respectively in their own right. No one, including Trish, was more over than Lita. And that’s coming from a huge Trish fan. Most girls today cannot touch her popularity or ever be the role model and representation she was to a bulk of female fans. She was their It girl. Trish was their poster girl who could gain mainstream attention inside and outside the ring. They were the female The Rock and Stone Cold of their era.

  • Donny Donny ?

Great article! I miss those days when we’d have creative debuts. I remember Alicia Fox probably having one of the most creative being introduced as a wedding planner for Vickie Guerrero and Edge.

Anyways, Joy and Amy could have really been something. Its unfortunate they were released so soon. The crowd seemed to live for their obnoxious rivalry. ? I read somewhere that Joy would train with Torrie and Hiroko in hopes of becoming an in-ring competitor but I guess things never followed through. Of the rookie SD Divas I’m surprised they kept Michelle over Joy.

Kelly Kelly’s WWE career is one I find most interesting. 19 years old, fresh out of High School, no pro-wrestling experience, and on the main roster with ECW legends. You have to give the girl props. Being the sole teenager in a pack of 30+ year olds is a challenge.

    • Like Mike

With Alicia Fox, it’s weird that her storyline didn’t amount to much for her. She played a crucial role in pushing forward the story arc with Edge and Vickie, but she ultimately just got phased out really quick. Only memorable moment she had was when she got speared at The Great American Bash. Then she was written off, I wonder if that was always the plan or if she was suppose to go on to manage Edge for a duration?

      • I believe I read somewhere she debuted to replace Kristal, even though she debuted almost a year after. So something similar would’ve probably happened had Kristal stayed around.

        • Like Mike

Wasn’t the story that Kristal didn’t feel comfortable doing the storyline? I mean, she ended up doing the romantic storyline with Teddy so I wonder what it was about the storyline with Edge she didn’t like.

          • Almost, Teddy talked about Kristal in this interview. She basically left bc of Bobby
            http://www.wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2016/0513/611707/teddy-long-talks-original-plans-for-big-wwe-angle/

          • Like Mike

Sounds like it was Kristal’s fault for not protecting kayfabe. Well no woman will have that problem now because kayfabe is gone lol

I remember that was why Serena got fired, for not upholding the “Straight Edge” gimmick in her day to day.

          • jbrizzy

I really wish Kristal would have ridden that storyline out ,especially since it was going to have her and Vickie running smackdown. That would have been amazing. Ole well

          • Like Mike

Yeah, Kristal is one of my favorite girls from the diva search. She had so much charisma and sass, and I thought she did really well in the role with Teddy. Would have been funny to see her and Vickie “run smackdown” into the ground ha

          • KatyaMenelli

omg yes! Would’ve loved to see a Face Michelle McCool vs Heel Krystal feud.

          • Rightt, it’s a shame. I wish Kristal pulled through, she had so much potential.

          • John Finnie

Yeah i read that she was in a relationship with her now husband & she didnt wan’t to be a person who broke up a couple so Foxy got the wedding planner role

      • Donny Donny ?

I’m unsure as well. I believe there was a change of plans as she was written off quite abruptly. Either way Foxy played her role well.

      • KatyaMenelli

it was vicky who was speared. alicia ducked out of the way.

  • SHOOK!

  • Ollie Roche

Let’s not forget chyna and Jacqueline’s debuts!

  • NOT Released Emma

I remember ALL of these debuts.

  • MK126

“Not only was Kelly not a wrestler, but she wasn’t much of a dancer or stripper either” LMFAO you forgot the part where Vince had to show her backstage what she should do

    • Brittany Smith

OMG I forgot when she said that in her interview. It’s quite disturbing/disgusting thinking about Vince dancing like tha

      • MK126

Could you imagine having to take “stripping” lessons for an old man LOL I wouldn’t be able to take him seriously after that

      • Maddox

QUite funny to me, considering Vince tore both quads just by power walking to the ring

        • Brittany Smith

This had me so hyped but it never lived up to its potential, sadly.

      • KatyaMenelli

that was wwe’s fault of how they booked it. the feud itself was all over the place and not in a good way.

    • Like Mike

This feud had so much potential, and I loved this moment.

      • KatyaMenelli

Yes! I remember first seeing this and was LIVING!

  • conan_kun
  • Laquane Anderson

damn watching that almost makes me feel bad for Kelly. She’s only 19 there. :(

  • TorrieTrishStacyLita
  • GlowTime

    Tara’s was ace ?

  • Tara’s debut was ruined by her poor title reigns and her awful booking. TNA had such a stacked roster back in 2009, but they didn’t create any new stars and gave us horrible storylines week after week. It takes talent.

    • MK126

It also didn’t help that they introduced her as “That’s Victoria from WWE” when she attacked TBP… her feud with Mickie James was also plagued with “she’s the reason I lost my WWE contract” and all this other former WWE superstar mess

  • jbrizzy

I absolutely love this, and I love surprise call ups. I’m just shocked that Mickie James isn’t in this list. When Kelly debuted,I was young so I thought it was dope at the time, looking back at it now,it was completely cringeworthy, especially at the fact that she was 19! That’s literally the same as JoJo getting on TV and stripping. Problematic. And I’m probably the only Diva fan who was a fan of Joy Giovanni. She was iconic and had an amazing theme song

    • MK126

Well they did kind of make JoJo look like a thot thot on TD when she broke up with her bf and then started dating Justin Gabriel lol

      • Like Mike

I love JoJo, but home girl is kind of a thot thot. InstaHoe lmao

        • Brittany Smith

          Omg????

        • KatyaMenelli

          how? i’m missing something.

          • MK126

Seeing has how she broke up with her bf at the time on the show… the next episode or two she was feelin her some Justin Gabriel and then they just started dating and then their relationship also ended. It didn’t help that she was 18/19 I think so it made her thot-esque. Doesn’t help that apparently shes the reason Bray Wyatt’s wife is divorcing him since they were also messing around. I wanna say there were also rumors of her and Orton (MAYBE don’t quote me on this) messing around as well

          • KatyaMenelli

I’m sorry but none of this supports the right for Jojo to be called a thot. She broke up with her bf because he made her choose between him and the WWE. Justin ended that relationship with Jojo because she was too young. And there is no POSSIBLE way Jojo is the reason Bray’s wife. is divorcing. Last time I checked, Bray’s wife is married to BRAY. Bray Wyatt is the reason his wife is divorcing him, not Jojo.

          • Like Mike

Just like, the photos she post are kinda thirsty. Then also the affair with Bray.

          • KatyaMenelli

Photos, really? Lord, women can never win. Can’t believe you really are supporting slut-shaming with…with pictures LOL

      • KatyaMenelli

How is she a thot when she broke up with him first? and last time i checked, that bf said it’s WWE or me.

    • Joy was a queen. She deserved a chance.

    • OJ Von Erich

      Woah woah woah…

I’ve been one of the biggest Joy Giovanni fans since day one, girl knows how to lick a pie & shake that hot momma booty.

Her & Christy were my top 2 women in SvR & her feud with Amy Weber is up there with Steph vs Trish.

And who can forget her iconic roles on Smackdown, such as weekly timekeeper & hosting the Smackdown Thanksgiving special

    • KatyaMenelli

I didn’t like most of the Diva Search Girls but one of the few I liked was Joy because she had such an unteachable size of charisma. She knew how to get that crowd to cheer, boo, oh, gasp, etc. and I can say that for sure. She was gone way too soon. Should’ve at least tried to train her first.

  • Raekon

just for the record: it was AMAZING Kong, not “Amazon Kong”. :p

    • MK126

She got there from Japan with free 2 day shipping

      • LIGHTSOUT | @MFckinLightsOut

        lmao

  • chrissi calvert

Litas for me was the best. Started off as a part of Godfathers “Ho Train” then to come out as Essa Rios valet who could do moves that no one had seen a woman do before

  • QueenSableBomb

Kelly’s oh my god. Girl had me WEAK I remember watching like “what in the…” her whole debut was one of those moments that had me questioning why I even bother watching WWE lmao. Joy Giovanni was the KWEEN. Her theme was a BOP. And Paige’s debut remains one of my favorites. The atmosphere that night was amazing and to debut against the #1 diva at the time…I was LIVING.

  • GLAMPIREQUEEN

I liiiiived for Paige’s debut. I remember being so checked out of the division during AJ’s reign (specifically when she was just running through all the girls and then beat literally ALL of them) that seeing Paige who I loved since NXT debut and dethrone the queen was everything to me. Mickie’s debut will always stick out to me, too. She had been given such a huge task and she rose and surpassed anyone’s expectation. Stacy and Torrie had really iconic debuts and pretty much their first moments of them were seen in segments with Shane and Vince McMahon (very little tops debuting with the McMahon family in terms of importance/pushing) and Torrie had her own storyline with Vince and she was the first to set Vince up and get him caught by his wife, omg. She had him wrapped around her little finger, played him, and STILL GOT HER CONTRACT. I know the storyline was short lived but I loved it back then.

    • GLAMPIREQUEEN

Just remembered Eva’s debut too! She managed to get the entire internet talking about her and only her (even if for only for all the wrong reasons lol), you can’t hate her for it. Her character grabbed attention since the beginning xD

  • Jo9834

Gail Kim was also pretty random, yes we saw vignettes before hand but the fact that she debuted and won the title in a battle royal was pretty shocking and unexpected.

Paige is probably one of the BEST random debuts ever for a woman, the crowd literally ate that entire segment up and you can tell Paige was a star from the moment she walked out.

Lita was great, because she connected with the crowd instantly and became a weekly must see attraction, it was totally different to what the WWE had presented before OR allowed a woman to do in the ring.

  • Neutral

Kelly´s debut is actually so disturbing omfg! I cringe watching it.

    • Chargod Flair #5x

Ikr I wonder where they found Kelly from.

I remember all the rumors about Kelly being a very promiscuous women back in her day and being with a bunch of men sexual and to think she was only 19 and retired at 26 really has me thinking because Sasha and Alexa have outstanding careers and there the same age has kelly when she retired. But anyway, her and CM punk as a COUPLE! Back when he was like a bad boy a skater boy yess honey.

I think Paige’s will be an all-time fave for me. Just hearing the screach in her theme music, AJ looking at the stage and the reaction from the crowd made it so perfect.

I think Mickie’s Melina’s and Beth’s debut should be here they were alot more impactful then kelly’s

Just because I feel like commenting on it. But I remember Tara’s debut being huge. I was so excited, it felt really weird seeing a former Diva that we loved and known as “Victoria” debuting for a different company under a completely different name. I refused to call her Tara at first. But I remember that moment being big because in my lifetime/memory it was unheard of to see a woman leave WWE and go to a competing company like TNA.

    • TrishStratusIsQueenDiva

No seriously. Victoria (Tara) really shook the table with this. She knew she was too good to go out like that and took matters into her own hands. Just wish she would’ve stayed with WWE longer. Imagine her vs McCool as McCool’s first Divas Championship rival!

      • Chargod Flair #5x

Victoria stayed long enough for the Divas title. She retired in January 2009. If you remember the Divas title was brought in in June of 2008. Granted she didn’t have much time to compete while the title was active.

  • TrishStratusIsQueenDiva

Completely unrelated post but the four hoursewomen of the Divas Era were Melina Mickie James, Michelle McCool and Beth Phoenix. Don’t @ me

  • Juan

Man! Those old school TNA videos are making me feel so nostalgic! That women’s division was arguably the best in the world and hasn’t been topped since!! Screw the fake women’s revolution in WWE, TNA started the revolution and they let the matches/promos/action speak for itself!

      PREACH!!!
