Today (Dec 7th) at a live WWE event Abu Dhabi, Alexa Bliss and Sasha Banks made history by competing in the first WWE women’s match in the United Arab Emirates. The match saw Alexa Bliss retain the Raw Women’s Championship.

In a post match interview, Sasha Banks expressed her emotions behind the historic match:

“It feels so crazy because I haven’t had this feeling, to be honest, in awhile. Right before I went out, I just started crying because I just thought ‘How huge is this?’. It’s bigger than me. It was insane. The moment I walked out there and the moment the announcer announced that this was going to be a Women’s match, you can hear the crowd care. The moment I stood out there and I saw little girls, it made everything worth it because I feel like this was put on this earth to do. I want to make a change in the world, empower women, I want them to know their dreams are endless and that they can achieve anything. Having the first women’s match in Abu Dhabi, that’s crazy because last year, it wasn’t allowed and this year we’re doing it. It’s incredible, I couldn’t hold my emotions in that ring.”

Banks also shared her reaction to fans chanting “This is hope”:

“We’ve come such a long way. Not just in WWE but in the whole world. This is something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life and I can’t thank the fans enough because they inspired me tonight. They made my heart so full of joy and happiness. All those chants got to me, even the ‘Biscuit Butt’, I was so surprised but when they chanted ‘This is hope’ it was so powerful”

In addition to Sasha’s emotional reaction Alexa posted on Instagram about the historic night:

What an amazing and historic night ! Thank you so much Abu Dhabi , was such an honor 💙

What are your thoughts behind this historic Women’s match?

  • Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t the Knockouts wrestle there a couple years ago?

    • RadicallyRadic

Maybe it’s a different part of that area that never had women compete. But it’s the first Womens match in WWE regardless, so it’s still history nonetheless.

    • Randall

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SD94CjqDRf8 Not sure if this was actually filmed in India though.

      • RadicallyRadic

It was India. Different rules and regulations there since they are in regular attire.

      • No, not that. I’m pretty sure TNA held a live event over there in 2009.

      • hitesh khanna

it was in india.. we dont really have rules and regulations of what girls can wear in India.. its not really a law like the UAE.

      • Raekon

A few years ago they even had a cooperation and a show called ring a ting or something (sorry forgot to exact Name) down in india in which Cheerleader melissa and others had matches in normal attires.
India has not a law that says women have to be totally covered up.

        • KatyaMenelli

          Ring Ka King*

    • Joseph

That’s India not United Arab Emirates.

    • Troy Smith

They did. But it was a private show so there aren’t photos or video.

  • Randall

    Congrats Bliss and Banks

  • Michael Burmy

As I said before, I REALLY hope this is the start of the UAE changing these oppressive laws and guaranteeing full rights for women and LGBTQ Emiratis, for greater freedom of religion and speech, and for, ultimately, full separation of church and state in the UAE…the crowd’s chants give me hope.

Unfortunately, it’s just as likely that this would not lead to any change at all…remember, Vince would do #WWENorthKorea if Kim-Jong Un paid him enough.

  • RadicallyRadic

The Boss auditioning for the part of the Purple Ranger, and slaying while doing so.

But in all seriousness, congrats to both women, and great of the people to chant ‘This is hope’ as well! And bless the Boss, you can tell the passion whenever she gets emotional during moments like that. That ain’t fake y’all!!!!!

    • MK126

I wouldn’t be surprised if the attire she wore was one of her husbands LOL

  • Randall

Anyone listen to Alexa Bliss new interview with Sam Robert’s today? She talks about her wrestling ability and she currently doesn’t do any flashy moves in the ring. Good interview

  • Like Mike

Did they wear these attires as they would be seen as to revealing to an arab audience in their usual garb?

    • MK126

Yeah that’s why usually when they tour India/UAB the women don’t go on tour cause of their very “risqué” attires that go against their traditions

      • Number One

Though it was for backward reasons, I do like the outfits

        • Like Mike

Yeah it’s kinda crazy to me (an american) that there are still parts of the world with very strict regulations, especially on women. So it’s okay for the men to go out there in speedos? lol

          • MK126

LOL I guess its because women outside of their culture are often sexualized and most women basically wear a push-up bra and skimpy bottoms. Beth never went on tour either and all she wore were those body-suits. It also explains why Kavita Devi’s attire for the MYC looked like very traditional garb for the women

      • Carolution

its not “traditions” but because they oppress women and force them to cover up. lets not lie now.

        • MK126

          Customs*

          • Carolution

            its not that either.

          • MK126

It’s whatever you want it to be. The politically correct and business answer is traditions the more logical and appropriate answer is their views and laws against women

          • Carolution

im not going to be pc because oppression of women or anyone is wrong and hopefully this will bring change and inspire the girls/women and men who watched the match that women are just as capable as the men.

          • MK126

In todays day and age that’s all we can ask for is that countries see that women are equal to and if not better than men. It sucks that not all countries progress at the same speed but this is a step in the right direction for the future of their country

          • MyleneCruz

I get your feelings but you need to be respectful to the women who are okay with the way they live because it’s all they know and what theyve been use too all their life. It’s not up to you to tell others that they are oppressed.

          • Carolution

i dont have to respect that since thats all they know and im not telling them they’re oppressed i dont need to since they’ve lived it all their lives and will never know what its like to be able to have the power of choice.

          • MyleneCruz

Your ignorance and lack of respect for others beliefs will only get you but so far. You’ll learn the hard way.

          • Carolution

i dont need to respect beliefs if they oppress, restrict other human beings.

          • Customs, views, traditions, feelings, moral code, philosophy, ethics, religious views.

        • Omar Zaal

Sadly is not only women who’s opressed.

          • Carolution

of course the men are as well i’d never be ignorant to that fact.

          • Omar Zaal

I was there few months ago and people didn’t approve of my lifestyle.
It’s hell there is no freedom
            You can’t be yourself.

          • Carolution

true and thats just sad. its why my friend loves australia and would never go back there.

    • Mick

It’s sad because they would watch them on TV with their ” risque” attires but then want them head to toe dressed on their country.

  • Winter

WOW! This is huge, congrats to my girl!!! Could have been even better if they let her win the title there.

  • Chuckie Chk

Impact did it 7 yrs ago with they ran three shows in in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates at The Abu Dhabi Golf & Equestrian Club and featured Knockout’s Madison Rayne, Velvet Sky, Sarita, and Taylor Wilde

  • YonceLuvsDivas

I like how Sasha and Alexa both attires that wouldn’t disrespect the culture there.

    • Carolution

they’d be punished if they did and wwe wouldn’t allow that either. so its not by choice

      • YonceLuvsDivas

That’s the one thing I love about America. As much as we feel it’s such a crappy nation we really do have the power of choice here.

        • Omar Zaal

          Amen sister

        • Maddox

          Respect their Authoritah

  • Randall

Wo https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/77db2bf3ab7454339fa69dadbd6b0e150b692d913447774a147669263c4c9431.jpg Wonder if Sasha was inspired by MVP’s attire. They kind of look similar

  • Carolution

well anything that can hopefully change an oppressive countries views towards women is a good thing.

  • These two may not be on the same page all the time but this is nice to see. I hope in the future they won’t even need to cover up this much.

  • Jo9834

Its so heartwarming to see Sasha’s reaction, I mean, you can tell this means so much to her. I hope that in a few years time, the girls can return and wrestle in their normal attire the way they do around the world.

Side note…I hope footage of the match surfaces somewhere, id love to see it!.

  • Dreignz

Alexa looks good, that’s all I have to say about this

    • AngelBlissRae

      YASSSSS

  • Mick

Raisha Saeed did better wearing head to toe attires. These two are ugh…

  • #FlairfortheGold
    • Wicked Emma

      Raisha Saeed

      • #FlairfortheGold

        The one and only!

    • B J

Aliyah needs a Raisha Saeed gimmick ASAP!

      • Super Mateo

Yeah…there is precedent for WWE Canadian superstars to act like they’re from Asia.

        • Gato_wiska

Most Asian countries see Jus sanguinis over Jus Soli. For Asians an Asian is Asian if they have an Asian parent.

        • B J

          Her roots are Arabic.

          • Charlie Weston

And white American’s roots are largely European but I don’t need to see Alexa Bliss with a lederhossen gimmick.

          • B J

Well looking to her ancestors for inspiration might be better than the shitty cat ears gimmick thing she has going on. Aliyah could slay with a character like Raisha.

    • Catalina

In today’s society if someone where to do that and there not ARABIC like Raisha saeed they would have been dragged to hell. Would love to see this gimmick but the only person who can do it is Aliyah anyway else would have been dubbed as racist and islamphobic.

    • Omar Zaal

      I missed her to death
She was supposed to be in the WWE with Mohammed Hussan and Divary but things didn’t work out.

Back in 2006 would’ve been interesting to see her square off with Trish, Lita, Molly, Candice, Jazz etc.

      • ssilva872

Replace a useless 2006 version of Candice and the sadly already retired Molly Holly with Mickie James and Victoria and your sentence is accurate.

        • AlexV

I love key agree with you lol.

        • Omar Zaal

I was just wondering if things went through what would’ve happened after she breaks up with Hassan’ group
Would she join the divas division ?

Would she been a week woman’s Champ?

A fued with Lita, Trish etc?

      • Malcolm Bennett

You can still follow her though, as she is more known throughout the wrestling community as Cheerleader Melissa, in case you didn’t know.

        • Omar Zaal

I know lol it just the Character I missed
Alissa Flash character was great But Mariposa and Saeed are the best persona.

  • NicestWayPossible.

its such a shame you guys are turning this into a negative… its very sad…
to see how most of you write that its not okay to ask women to cover up is very very hypocritical.
if you really wanna be judgmental, start with yourself -> a woman should be able to dress/present herself the way she wants to, right? -> well then why are most of you guys freaking over a hijab?

    come on, grow up
    ughh

    • Cilla

I think the problem people have is when there is punishment for women who don’t cover up.

      • Omar Zaal

I was in Palestine territories few months ago
        And been to Jordan
Not every woman there covers up.

It’s a shame an advanced Arab country like Emirate would punish women for not covering up.

    • Carolution

choosing and being forced to cover up are two completely different things.

  • Neutral

Wow Sasha was actually serving a look, I´m so into it tbh

    • ssilva872

I do like that they at least had decent enough Middle East appropriate attires.

  • Corey Anderson

    Love sasha’s outfit

  • I don’t know how I feel about the “Wow props to them for respecting the culture” discussion, but we have to keep in mind that progress often happens one step at a time, and the fact that women were allowed to yet alone compete is a worthy achievement. Congratulations to the both of them.

  • Umnei

Came back from the event a couple hours ago. Their match was mediocre but one of the best ones of the night. Banks actually hit the Bank Statement but Alexa reached her foot under the ropes and the match continued. Finals came when Alexa won via roll up with her feet on the ropes. After Alexa won and went to the back, Sasha did linger in the middle of the ring a bit longer and looked around, so judging by this interview. She was still awestruck at the fact that she was making history. Even at the ramp before leaving, she took a good long look ??

    • KatyaMenelli

wait, I hate to be THAT person, but the only time they book Alexa correctly is not on TV or Programming!?

Anyways, that’s awesome that you were apart of that history-making moment. Hope you enjoyed the show.

      • Umnei

Haha thank you. It’s always nice when WWE comes to this part of the world. I remember last year, the women appeared for the first time. Alicia Fox came out and thanked the audience for having them, but there was no match. Now we actually got it :D

  • conan_kun
    • Corey Anderson

It’s cause mvp was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this gear but she definitely wore it better

  • Leave it to Sasha to make me cry. Every damn time she gets emotional I get up in my feelings. Her love and passion for the sport is obvious, and it’s tangible, and I hope she never loses that, congratulations to both of these women for their huge accomplishment!

    • Typical Heel

Sasha should get a seamstress to cut it up and make it sexier and should wear this more often.

I love it!!!! Always great to see the women break barriers and change history!! And sasha coming through with this bodysuit!!!!

Such a cool moment for them

    • AngelBlissRae

      Yeasss

  • A?.

This is actually a huge step! But it’s just so sad how they have to cover themselves up, they’re so behind it’s insane.

    • AngelBlissRae

      It’s whatever.

  • Bad and Bossy

I’m so proud of Sasha, you know, you can read in a lot of pages that WWE doesn’t see a “STAR” in her but when you see WWE let her make HISTORY again and again, you could see that is not true, WWE loves Sasha and really trust in her talent. I’m so proud of Alexa and Sasha.

    • Super Mateo

WWE seriously made the right call when they turned her babyface. She’s definitely the kind of woman WWE can build a division around.

      • Bad and Bossy

        ????????????

        • AngelBlissRae

          Mhmm

      • Chargod Flair #5x

Her role in the division is similar to Lita’s but I agree.

        • AngelBlissRae

          Hehe

      • AngelBlissRae

        Yeah I think so

    • AngelBlissRae

Hehe yeah I agree so proud of both whew

  • Randall

Would be nice if wwe actually aired live events on the network.

    • AngelBlissRae

      I agree.

    • Darren C. #Savees

This would not help their money

  • Super Mateo

I don’t have a problem with the bodysuits, as long as they don’t hinder movement. I rather them perform in the suits rather than not perform at all.

This is a good sign. The women were allowed to perform for the first time there and they have given the honor to Sasha and Alexa. Congratulations to both ladies.

    • AngelBlissRae

      Thanks

  • GOD STRATUS•
    • AngelBlissRae

      Cool

  • Chargod Flair #5x

    Legends ??
I loved Sasha’s suit she reminded me of a power ranger. Alexa looked like she was wearing a onesie about to go to bed at a sleepover.

    • AngelBlissRae

Kween of sleeping at sleepovers and onsies???

  • Vid Trim

I’ve never seen someone as passionate about wrestling as Sasha… she’s truly a gem

    • AngelBlissRae

      And Alexa boy wyd? ???

      • Vid Trim

I know she was there too lol but just listen to that interview… Sasha’s passion for this business is really something else

  • AngelBlissRae

    Kweens

  • ???

I wonder if Sasha and Alexa will get along one day? Especially with them being the first two women to make history in Abu Dhabi!

    • Randall

Who knows they may already get along and just playing it off like they still hate one another. It’s kind of childish that they are still beefing ver something that happened in NXT.

      • ???

I know right ? Like girl move on it was something happened years ago , no one diss the other or talk about this situation but Sasha tbh.. Alexa never do this .

      • Carolution

what happened in nxt between them?

        • TabbyK

Sasha just didn’t like Alexa and vice versa. Sasha reportedly took some liberties with her in training and was purposely stiff with her in the ring. Which resulted in Alexa having asked couple “broken” noses when they would wrestle back in NXT.

          Most don’t believe it imo
because they found out about it a little while after Alexa was on the main roster but this was originally talked about while they were still in NXT. And the people who talked about it are the same ones who report about tryouts and signings months before WWE and others sites report about it so…

  • OJ Von Erich

Even not being a Sasha fan, her speech & video made me feel so deeply proud & happy for her & not only her, but the other women too, we really have made it guys, this is where we’ve wanted women’s wrestling to be for so long.
