The age old complaint over wrestling being “fake” seems to crop up every other year and this time an unlikely source is defending her old stomping ground.

Former WWE Superstar Eva Marie, real name Natalie Eva Marie, recently sat down with Complex News’ Out of Bounds show to discuss Mia Khalifa‘s comment about wrestling not being a real sport. She also talks about her transition to acting and more.

On challenging Mia Khalifa’s claims that wrestling isn’t a real sport: Some moves are [choreographed], so like you’ll go over your finish, whoever’s gonna win or lose because that’s predetermined. However, when you’re in there, usually you’re just going toe-to-toe. So like, if I have you in a headlock, then I’m telling you right then and there what we’re doing next. NFL, NBA, they all have off-seasons. Wrestling doesn’t have an off-season. We’re on the road 209 days out of the year, performing in different cities every single night. Where you have your NBA, and NFL and major league and they’re taking charter flights going to the next city. We’re driving in rent-a-cars to the next city.”

On the difference between training for acting and wrestling: “You have to put your body through a lot of physicality with wrestling. You’re saying you think it’s fake, however when you get in the ring, you’re really taking those bumps…Then when it comes to acting, you’re trying to get out of yourself and be a whole other person, which also helps with WWE, too, because you’re playing a character at the end of the day.”

Natalie is currently modeling and continues to work on her own fashion line.

What do you think about this interview? Are you keeping up with Natalie’s career out of the ring? Sound off in the comments below.

My level of respect for Eva increased a bit

  • spilledtea

I’m actually surprised that Eva Marie of all people is schooling everyone about this. She handled it in a very well-spoken and careful manner! Props to her educating that pornstar.

    • vincecabrera

Yup. She owned that ran through pornstar!

    • Jo9834

I agree, totally liked the way she came across here and she made her points. It sounds like she’s still very much in good spirits about the business, she could definitely have a one night return at the rumble and I would not be mad!.

Does she know wrestling is a script

  • OJ Von Erich
    • KatyaMenelli

Wow…to be honest that would be cool to see at the RR. I wouldn’t even be mad.

  • I agree with Eva, but I’m still salty about her leaving and proving the naysayers right when she finally started to improve.

    • Izzy4lw

Right? I love my indy darlings, but I thought Eva could have been a PHENOMENAL champion to get a babyface over precisely BECAUSE she was so damn bad in the ring. Having her as a heel champ and cheating to keep the title would have earned her nuclear heat and could have also played into the “WWE pushing a pretty girl over real talent”, it’s just a shame that she wasn’t charismatic enough in her run to pull off that character. And then she left and proved everyone right who said she was only using WWE as a stepping stone. So…. Bye Felicia.

  • Crazy. #RIPMae

Queen! I’m ready to see her return as All Blue Everything and end Asuka once and for all and then go on to face Charlotte Flair for the Smackdown Women’s Championship! Charlotte vs Eva would actually be iconic due to the reaction during the match. Eva will be booed out of the arena and Charlotte will get cheered for dragging Eva. It’s the perfect babyface vs heel match!

  • NOT Released Emma

If WWE contacted Mia Khalifa she will be in WWE in a heartbeat.

  • Jouey

    queeeeeeeeeeen please come backkk

  • TorrieTrishStacyLita

    Ok..you got something right boo.

  • Laquane Anderson

QUUEEEEENNN. Ugh I miss her dearly. Hoping she slide in a royal rumble surprise spot.

  • ?too litty?

I have always respected the Red Queen, hoping to see her in the Royal Rumble. Queen of getting heat.

  • Exotic

    wow, a QUEEN.
I just wished she stayed around because I was digging her gimmick, character and storyline alot. She made a huge improvement in the ring too, so ugh, she had to leave at her prime.

  • Mick

Natalie is the first female to talk about it and make sense without getting too passionate or personal about it. She did what I expect pros to do.

  • ?Naomi?

    Drag ?? Her ?? Eva ??

  • vincecabrera

    #TeamNatalie

  • ???

She used the WWE for the fame, but what she did here was impressive! She showed some loyalty and respect at least. I always wanted her to prove everyone wrong and WWE actually gave her many chances but she left at the very wrong time, ugh whatever. She didn’t want to win any championship so why would we ?

  • Allyn

I’ve always liked Eva, yeah her departure was shady but this right here proved that she wasn’t just there to stand around with her hands behind her back, she knew the business and appreciated it, and most importantly respected it. She is a really sweet person too I live in the same area as her and she has always struck me as a humble individual in person Whenever I’ve said hello.

    • Izzy4lw

Eva could have been huge, but she never really ‘got’ wrestling. There are plenty of women who respect the business, they just never really latch onto it no matter how hard they try. Eva was never a good wrestler, let’s just call a spade a spade; But the heat she garnered by being terrible could have been harnessed, if only she’d loosened up and embraced the crowd hatred. IMO she never recovered, and so every time she was out she’d overthink and freeze up and never really push through in a meaningful way. Then she went and left, and basically proved the people right who figured she would use WWE as a stepping stone and for exposure and nothing else.

      • Allyn

yeah I agree she never really got it and in the end she was her own obstacle, I saw potential but she never really made the impact she could have . But it would be one thing to have been in Wwe, played the part and then trashed it and or just disregard it upon exiting, I’m alluding to the fact that she was defending the business and at the same time showed respect for it which is what I admire about her.

  • Pavement Rhodes

At least Eva used a realistic “days on the road” figure than the standard “300 days a year”. Although I doubt Eva was ever close to being on the road 200 days in any of her years.

  • Keeana Tayler

Ok sis!!!! Never thought id ever be rooting for her but she handled everything so classy and taught what her face some lessons

  • YonceLuvsDivas

I’ve always said Eva had passion for wrestling. The girl was really trying. And here’s your proof. She really did love the WWE!

  • Glitter Bliss Banks

I wouldn’t of thought that Eva would have been the one to actually face this Mia girl one on one and confront her on her statements about the business. Eva handled herself really well and I thought she was concise and clear when explaining it all, props to her but will people will still hate her guts for anything!

People will always have mixed opinions of what professional wrestling is, wrestling will always be a funny subject, not everyone will be a fan but this Mia Khalifa girl just comes of ignorant and I just feel she shouldn’t be getting the amount of time and attention she has been getting lately, she isn’t worth the slay tbh.

I feel if people are really that confused or set on what wresltling is and what it’s not…at the end of the day just look at footage of the Superstars in children’s hospitals putting smiles of sick children’s faces, the little boys and girls crying the with joy when their favourite star comes out and the type of emotion it conveys in the audience…THAT is what wrestling is! Wrestling is it’s fans as much as it’s the actual athletes ??

  • Tina

Did anyone else see the Hurricane’s response to Mia Hoelifa? Shut her down faaaast lol but respect to Eva for educating her too??

  • Asa ?

The pornstar really got dragged by Eva. i can’t. Queen Asa Akira would never..

  • dcruz87

    come thru queen!
