Little Egypt on the how accurate Netflix’s GLOW series is

Original GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) star Little Egypt was a recent guest the Women’s Pro Wrestling Weekly podcast where she discusses the original GLOW series from the 80s and its impact, the revived Netflix’s series and how she got into the promotion. Highlights of the interview.

How accurate Netflix’s GLOW is to the original: I think it was probably darker what happened to us. We were also pioneering and when you’re pioneering, you don’t know you’re pioneering. So when you’re pioneering it’s just stress, confusion and you’re just trying to survive. That was the atmosphere for all of us. I love that they’re taking a funny spin on it because it holds the audience better. I don’t know much tragedy someone wants to see on a weekly basis so I absolutely love that they’re doing it as a dramedy. It is loosely based and there is absolutely no confusion with most of us. There are some character similarities but there is definitely not 100% knock-offs.

On Ivory being inducted to WWE HOF and GLOW’s influence: I love Lisa Moretti, she wrestled as Tina Ferrari [in GLOW] and went on to be Ivory [in WWE]. It was the beginning of the Divas division where she actually the only able to take the belt away from Chyna which was a very cool deal and long coming. I am so excited that she’s finally in the Hall of Fame. Should she have been there ten years ago? Absolutely but hey I can’t complain that she’s in there now. Did the popularity of GLOW maybe have something to do with it? I don’t know but look at the influences. Look at them bringing in the cast [of Netflix’s GLOW] into the WWE production because they’re bridging themselves to that piece of history which I’m excited about. You know, if you can’t beat them, join them. I hope they continue to embrace these new members of GLOW which we call our sisterhood. These are the new girls that are trailblazing for us and keeping our legacy alive because if it wasn’t for GLOW Netflix, we would still be in the rabbit hole.

Mount Fiji encouraging her to join GLOW: I got a job at a T-Shirt store at the age of 19 and in walks Mount Fiji, this 350-pound Samoan giant to have a T-Shirt made for a match. You can’t look at this woman and not start a conversation. I said ‘Hi, what do you do?’ and she’s like ‘I’m a wrestler and I do a show at the Riviera Hotel.’. She was so proud. She started asking me questions like ‘What do you do? What do you want to do with your life?’ I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life but she could see something in me that I didn’t see in myself. She looked at me and said ‘You don’t need to be here. You could be doing what I’m doing. You should come to wrestle with me at the Riviera.’ I was like ‘Wrestle you at the Riviera? This has to be some kind of joke. Are we in a cage and you eat people?’ That’s what I’m thinking at 19 and when you don’t have really have a wrestling background. But I could see a look in her eye that this was worth my time.

On WWE possibly having an all women’s wrestling show: That would be amazing because I want to see women work and I know the one of the hardest thing for the last ten years has been how much time can we get. Now if you’re taking away their restriction of time, you’re going to see the character development you want to see.

Little Egypt also discusses how the GLOW documentary started, the development of her character and WWE’s all women PPV Evolution.
