The phrase ‘match of the year candidate’ has been thrown around in regards to last night’s Divas traditional Survivor Series elimination match. But it’s time for Diva Dirt to weigh in… was the Raw vs SmackDown match really that good? I would say while it was not the most technical match, it was a lot of fun to watch and for that reason I too, would consider this a potential match of the year candidate.

This match has been a dream match for me for a while now, I really wanted to see the Divas get the traditional elimination treatment and finally that became a reality. I didn’t think it would happen, I never thought WWE would give the Divas enough time on the card to have an elimination match but they finally did. And my verdict is that it turned out really well, it was fun, fast-paced and the fans were into it. I would definitely like to see this become a permanent fixture to Survivor Series each and every year. It doesn’t need to be Raw vs SmackDown every year (maybe heels vs faces or team captains picking their Divas), but I definitely think that the risk paid off and WWE should treat this as a guinea pig for future Survivor Series pay per views.

Anyway, the match got a good 10 minutes which is about the most I thought the Divas would get. I feel it could have benefited from more time, as eliminations occured far too often whereas with the men’s matches, they are sporadic. However, given the time they had that was to be expected. The real shocker here is some of the Divas who were eliminated early on: Kelly Kelly was the second Diva to be eliminated and SmackDown’s team captain, Michelle McCool was third. I’m not sure what happened there given their strong, prominent roles on television. Meanwhile Jillian lasts almost the entire match? Okay!

The match started out very strongly, Beth vs Michelle was good stuff, they had great chemistry and were really going at it. Beth then did some good moves with Maria but here’s where things began to go downhill for a moment: Kelly got tagged in. Kelly vs Maria? The next minute or so seemed to plod along as Kelly and Maria stumbled around the ring, sure they’ve improved but pitting them against each other showed just how green they really are. Thankfully, Victoria tagged in and order was restored. The match livened up as Mickie tagged in and here came one of my favourite parts of the match: Michelle and Mickie. They shared a really great chemistry, great athleticism and it really whet my appetite to one day see them go at it one-on-one. The prospect of that match is very appealing to me now.

If you ask me, Candice was the weakest link of either teams last night during her part of the match with Natalya. She looked hesitant and slow in the ring. Natalya got a great reaction from locking in the Sharpshooter, that was fun to see. The MVP of the night has to go to Maryse, her cockiness and arrogance really made this match. From fighting with her own team mate to standing up to Beth Phoenix, Maryse was on fine form and I really hope that come Tuesday night’s SmackDown tapings she’s put back in the forefront of the Divas Championship picture. She really shone in this match. Beth wins to the shock of no one…

I think it’s a real testament to SmackDown that there was interplay between their Divas, even though they lost the match. They managed to play up on storylines such as the hate between Michelle and Maryse as well as the ‘rivalry’ between Michelle and Maria. Meanwhile Raw had no story to tell except shock horror, Beth is the strong, dominant Glamazon. SmackDown are the real winners here, they have come out of this pay per view with fuel to add to storylines come this week’s SmackDown.

I definitely think this was a risk worth taking, it showed that the elimination match for the Divas can work and I hope this is the start of a yearly tradition. The crowd seemed as into the end of this match as they did the men’s matches, which is surely a good sign.

  1. im so high about this..n hope it become a yearly match…n i think SD! vs raw is a very good start but heels vs faces would have been over played for divas

  2. I agree. This was a really strong match. Kelly and Maria proved that they can’t carry matches on their on and need stronger more veteran Divas to make them look good. With each other, how they usually used to wrestle came out. It seemed that both have gotten complacent in the past month or two, and hopefully this will jumpstart some training.

I think it was a weird call for Michelle to go out as early as she did. Yes Maria distracted her but she is supposed to be ‘better’ than that, although it adds to somebody turning heel. I thought it also made her as the champion and captain look weak as she was the first one in the ring and the second on her own team eliminated while the Raw team captian and other champion was the last one standing. She did however look good in the parts she was in and I think it showed Mickie should move to SD because the two could put on a good match due to the freshness of never wrestling each other before.

Candice was sloppy but I think it was because of her leg which ws obviously hurting her. I love that Natalya pulled out a Sharpshooter at Survivor Series, a PPV which doesn’t have good history for the Harts. Of the whole match it got the biggest pop. If you watch it again, the crowd started to boo when it looked like Candice was going to reach the rops, but when Nattie pulled her back they cheered again.

The highlight of the entire match and star was without a doubt Maryse. She showed she still can’t stand McCool and isn’t done with her by tagging herself in, pushing her off the apron and then tagging her into the match. She eliminated Mickie James -the ultimate heel move according to the fans. She also did heel moves in attacking Beth Phoenix and then running out of the ring. She was also VERY solid in her solo against Candice and Beth. The modified figure four as great and looked like it hurt. The heel kick to the back of Beth’s head was ROCKIN!! She didn’t look weak at all in her eventual loss. She looked strong as the final member of her SD team and it just looked like Beth the Glamazon was too much for her. Maryse should definitely get a title shot, especially since she is the last one to cleanly pin Michelle over on SD.

The difference of both teams is the the girls on SD, especially Maryse because she actually has, believe they can take out McCool and adds a level of tension that they are not afraid of their captain. The RAW girls on the other hand have all had their asses handed to them by Beth and know she can do it whenever is deemed necessary. I believe this sets up more likely Melina’s return than Gail’s intro to RAW as being a fresh face to take her out. At ONS they had agreat match and were having a good feud until Melina was injured. Gail being the one to take her out is like Gail/Kong 2 and Gail may be better suite for SD since there is no strong face. SD needs a Mickie James and Gail can do that for them.

So much to say because it was so good!!!

  3. Oh..BTW

Layla throwing her shoe and hitting CM Punk in the face=GOLD!!!!!!!

  4. Just heard that Candice injured her leg from last night

  5. This was a really REALLY good match. Maryse was the star of this match. She demonstrated why she’s still in this company. Several months back, people were complaining that all she did were those welcome back vignettes, and that she should be released. But look at her now, she managed to stand toe to toe with Beth Phoenix.

Normally Diva matches which involve the majority of the Diva roster are pretty short and dull, but WWE somehow managed to make it exciting and something wrestling fans want to see. Kudos to the Divas for an excellent match.

Though Maria did look sort of like an idiot flailing her arms and screaming attempting her Victory Roll on Jillian.

  6. I was so sad that Natalya didn’t get much time in the ring – I’m really starting to like her as a wrestler! The sharpshooter on Candice was awesome and the pop it received was… just wow.

I really enough this match. I doubted that this would have been a boring Divas match… Thank goodness that WWE took the risk!

  7. i thought it was wierd that they elimanated michelle so early but then again it adds some sort of heat between her and mara.
victoria was so funny in this match too bad she got elimanated first “/
wow poor candice u can tell that fighting wit natalya wasnt good for her.
i like maryse and her leglock that was innovative plus that kick to the head of beth was priceless.
    this was an awesome match

  8. This match was great. It was extremely fun to watch, and I felt myself sitting on the edge of my seat.
I am a bit disappointed that Victoria was eliminated so early, but I’m sorry to say that it didn’t come as a shock. And Michelle being eliminated so soon, that was just kind of shocking. I didn’t see it coming.
Glad WWE took a chance with this because it most definitely paid off!

  9. i think the perfect ending would of been melina coming down and finishing off beth……but yeah
