sableFor all of the stars that have been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, you’ll find but a fraction of them are women. For every ten men, there is probably about one woman. While partly, this enforces wrestling’s prejudice against women, it’s not entirely WWE’s fault either. With women’s wrestling so sparse before the Attitude era, there hasn’t really been anyone to induct. And since WWE’s female wrestlers became Divas, the stars we’ve come to know and love over the past decade or so seem all too ‘new’ to be inducted just yet. However…

The Class of 2009 seems to be the most progressive bunch yet, as the lead inductee of this year’s Hall of Fame is none other than Stone Cold Steve Austin. The man who defined the Attitude era. And since the Hall of Fame is getting more up-to-date with its inductees, it seems like a few of the older generation of Divas are ready to slip through the cracks and are ready for the Hall of Fame. I’m not saying every Sunny and Terri deserves a spot in the Class of ’09, of course you would have to have made a well-recognised, outstanding contribution to the business to be considered. There is one Diva who I think should be inducted this year and her name is oft associated with a whiplash. That iconic entrance theme exudes the sultriness and sexiness that this Diva possessed in her heyday, of course I am talking about Sable.

It would be fitting to induct the Superstar who defined the Attitude era and the Diva who defined the Attitude era in the same year. If we can look past her somewhat misguided return to the company in 2003, Sable’s career in the late ’90s burgeoned at rocket-speed. Her popularity rivalled the likes of Stone Cold and The Rock and to this day, has been unmatched. A bold statement, I know but I find it to be true.

While Trish Stratus is clearly the better all around Diva, by the time she came to prominence, the audience had sloped off. The audiences who watched the Attitude era in the ’90s had halved by the ‘noughties’ in those unfortunate Spike TV years, thus Trish, although she deserved it, didn’t quite manage to reach the entire arena in the way Sable could.

Sable was almost a trial run for the likes of Trish, Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler – and before them, Debra and The Kat. She was the epitome of ‘bombshell’ though not a wrestler, learned her craft on the job. Her popularity was a catalyst for the launch of the women’s division we know today. I’m not saying it was the only reason, but it was certainly one. She may not have been the best wrestler but she was certainly a pioneer and though her 2003 comeback may have stalwarted her chances, I don’t think that’s any reason to begrudge Sable what I truly think she deserves: a spot in the Hall of Fame, Class of 2009.

  1. sable at a later date, chyna is most deserving of an induction, although it may never happened

  2. No offense but what did Sable ever do? I mean yeah she was sexy as hell but her matches were only good because of the women she faced. I don’t think she ever did anything to get the prestige of Hall of Fame

  3. I often wonder if people just read the title and comment…

  4. I think most people should have “tl;dr” tattooed to their foreheads.

  5. Much like some of her modern counterparts, Sable wasn’t much as of a wrestler, but like Melanie said she possessed something (i.e two rock hard titties) that made the fans get behind her. While I wouldn’t induct Sable just yet as I think there are Divas more deserving, Sable’s role in revolutionizing the division as we know it is undeniable. I think she is a shoo-in for the HOF… just not yet.

  6. I think now *is* the time for Sable. People always say ‘yes but not yet’, then when?! I truly think Sable should go in this year along with Austin, as the Superstar and Diva who defined the Attitude era.

  7. I actually agree and think she is the only woman that would be fitting this year. Some say Chyna, but God knows she would be all coked up come the induction, i keed.. But I do believe Sable is the most deserving, and I would be happy to see her go in with Austin this year.

  8. im totally for it.
in the time she was in the WWE (in the 90s)
    she did many great accomplishments.
sure there are Divas “more deserving” but you gotta start somewhere.
i highly doubt they well induct her. but if they do then awesome =]

  9. I agree with Melanie.
Having SCSA inducted in ’09 {my graduating class!} HOF is awesome.
Don’t get me wrong, I would LOVE to see Chyna get inducted, but as everyone knows, her relationship with WWE isn’t so kosher so…..
Inducting Sable makes soooo much sense, she was “THE” Diva of the Attitude Era, it would be very fitting for the simple fact that she set a precedent that no other diva has matched, in terms of the reactions that she got from the fans by just escorting Marc Mero to the ring.
Can’t wait to see who else get inducted!

  10. C’mon ppl! Sable really does deserve HOF! She was a HUGE positive influence on the womens division! Just think without her there would be no womens championship. It would have never been revived!
She could work a crowd! She really deserves it!

  11. No. If you’re gonna induct her then induct Terri Runnels, Debra McMichael , The Kat and every other woman. Chyna deserves it more because she did things no other woman did before and has done since. Sable didn’t do anything different from anyone else.

But Sunny should get in before everyone else. Sunny was no trial run. That girl was an original and really stood out.

  12. I’d like to see her get inducted but I think it’ll be a long time until they’ll induct another women in the Hall of Fame, but if they do I’ll be shocked and excited.

  13. If a hall of fame worthy career is based off fan reactions then Maria and Candice are shoe in’s. Every hall of fame wrestler all had 1) personality 2) great mike and promotional skills and 3) if they were a wrestler good or great ability in the ring and 4) a long enough career to be meaningfull Sable may have had 1 or possibly 2 of these but not all 4. As a wrestler she either never had the skill Trish Stratus or for that matter today’s diva’s have or was never allowed to show it. Yes she got a big fan raction but how much of this was because of how she looked? At that time there were few women in the WWE and Sable did stand out. Her career wasn’t very long and by end of it the womens division had expanded and you had people like torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler coming over from the WCW. So instead of standing out, Sable simple blended in.

Finally getting into the hall of fame depends on a relationship with Vince and no one else. Sable didn’t just burn her bridges with the WWE, she blew them up. I do remember her ill fated return and how well that went over. Talk about a train wreck.

  14. You make a good point, Rob, but I wouldn’t say all Sable has going for her is fan reaction. I consider her a pioneer for the Divas. Though the selection process for the Hall of Fame is probably not exact science, more at the whim of Vince and co.

I don’t think Sable burned her bridges with WWE. I think they’re on relatively good terms, she did leave on her own accord and she is listed under the Alumni section on the website, a section usually reserved for people who are on good terms with the company.

  15. Tbh there’s 2 women who deserve a HOF spot more than Sable IMO.

First, Sunny. Perhaps the true original Diva.
And second and my favorite to be inducted this year, MS ELIZABETH! Before The Attitude Era and Sable, we had the great Ms Elizabeth. She deserves a spot more than any women.

And tbf, i don’t even think Sable deserves to be a HOFer. I give more credit to other women during that period than i do to her. Her wrestling career was, what, 6 years? To be in the HOF, i think you need to have a career of 15/20 years. BUT I’m not sure about that though. lol

  16. Besides this year’s HOF, is not all about the Attitude Era. The Funks and Steamboat suppostly (sp) are going to be inducted this year and they’re not from the “Attitude Era”. lol

  17. I never said it’s all about the Attitude Era…

  18. While I strongly despise Sable and always have, I agree with others that say that Sunny should go in first

  19. I honestly have mixed feelings about Sable being inducted into the HOF, because of how she left. After the $110 million law suit AGAINST the WWE, citing sexual harassment allegations, I’m sure that’s the last idea WWE would consider.
