Welcome the 2009 edition of Diva Draft! It feels like just yesterday when I was putting together last year’s Diva Draft and what a result! I successfully predicted both of the Diva Draft picks as Layla moved to Raw and Maria moved to SmackDown. So this year there’s the added pressure of keeping my streak intact! Unlike last year, the Draft has moved up to April 13th from it’s usual late-June slot meaning it comes just a week after WrestleMania. So over the next few days leading up to the big Draft show, I will be predicting my picks for this year’s Draft. Like last year, I’ll be making six picks but this time, in six consecutive days.
MARYSE TO RAW
Am I blowing my load too soon? Yesterday Mickie James and today Maryse, looks like I’m giving away my top picks early on! How generous of me. So the second of my six Draft picks is the French poodle and Divas Champion, Maryse! Since making her in-ring debut last year, this Diva has been on a roll. In her rookie year as a wrestler, Maryse became not only a serious title contender, but a champion. To be that young, sexy and talented should be a crime, but for Maryse it’s just everyday life.
With her cocky attitude and impressive moveset, Maryse leaped over the likes of Natalya and Victoria to face Michelle McCool in the then-Divas Champion’s first title defence at Unforgiven last September. The feud between these two was red hot and saw the Sexiest of the Sexy eventually gain the title in December. But for Maryse, there seems to be a higher calling than SmackDown’s Divas Championship. Fans on the Internet have been very vocal about moving the Champ to Raw and you know what? It seems likely. With reports that Vince McMahon himself is a Maryse fan, that kind of endorsement could help move Maryse to the live Monday night show. While there’s still lots for her to do on SmackDown (feuds with Gail and Maria over the Divas Championship), Maryse could also slot nicely on Raw.
But if she were to move to Raw, she’d be starting all over again. I don’t see her becoming the top heel of Raw over Beth Phoenix, but having the dynamic of two top heel Divas (like her and Michelle on SmackDown) would give the Women’s Champion, Melina some good feuds for the rest of the year.
But what of the Divas Championship? She can’t bring it with her to Raw, surely? In the same vain as the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championhip matches set for Backlash by Vickie Guerrero this past week on Raw, I suggest WWE makes a Divas Championship match for the pay per view that ‘must take place no matter the outcome of the Draft’. That way you could have Gail go over and keep the title on SmackDown.
Personally, I think it’s too soon to ship Maryse to Raw. But this is WWE and more often than not, once an act becomes hot on SmackDown, they usually get shipped to Raw…

I don’t see Maryse leaving Smackdown. Since she has come back she has been pretty terrible in the ring. She hasn’t been able to do anything right. She’s only had good matches because she has been carried. She was good when she first started but since she has come back to WWE since her injury, she has never been the same. If WWE move her to raw then her flaws will be noticeable as it is live. She needs to stay on Smackdown and get out of this funk she is in until she can carry a decent match.
i definitely love this idea!! but for some reason, i just dont think it would be the best thing for maryse. she’s still the top heel on smackdown since she holds the title, and if you were queen of one show, why move and become second best on the other show? she’ll have great matches on raw with melina, but if mickie and whoever else goes to smackdown, shed have great matches with them too. plus i think she still has unfinished business with gail, although i do like the setup you proposed where she’d drop the title to gail. this one could really go both ways if you ask me but i personally dont mind seeing maryse regardless of what show she’s on! she would fit in nicely regardless of what happens!
Maryse leaving Smackdown is a great idea simply because the atmosphere of a live show will go a long way towards improving her in ring performance, since there’s no safety net of an editing room, On the other hand I’m not sure if she should make the jump just yet as i still see Smackdown and ECW as the shows and Raw as the Rest of the other Stuff show, A move to Raw for her right now has me worried about WWE’s utilization of someone with mega talent, unlimited potential and a rather unique approach to being a heel…if only Maryse was allowed to incorporate more of her martial arts background into her moveset. In fact i wish all of the Divas were given the green light to add more of their sports, athletic, or martial arts backgrounds to their repertoire, so as to provide more distinction from Diva to Diva.
I want to her be on whichever show McCool isn’t.
The live aspect of Raw wouldn’t be a big change as she was the highlight of the Survivor Series Diva match and had a pretty solid match with Melina on Raw back in March.
It will definitely be interesting to see what the WWE does and if the WWE moves the Divas Championship onto Raw and the Women’s Championship onto Smackdown, or if the WWE simply has a Smackdown Diva go against Maryse for the Divas Championship. I’m confused on what will be the outcome with that belt, since Maryse isn’t booked in a match this week on Smackdown, so if she is drafted onto Raw than Smackdown will probably be goldless, unless the WWE ships Melina onto Smackdown. And the chances of Melina going to Smackdown are the same chances of Jillian Hall getting a brand new story-line that doesn’t end up making her look like a jobber – that’s not likely to happen and Melina going to Smackdown doesn’t seem likely either. Hmph, maybe Maryse will stay on Smackdown? Eh, maybe Gail Kim and her will battle it out at Backlash? Hmph, I’m rooting for my favorite gimmick wise Diva, Maryse to be given props when it comes to whichever brand she is shipped to.
It seems like a good idea in theory, but I don’t think it would translate quite as well. On Smackdown, Maryse is the top heel diva as she holds the diva’s championship. Beth Phoenix, unless she’s drafted to SD, is the top heel diva on the RAW brand and I honestly don’t see that changing. Jillian was pretty much a top diva when she was drafted from SD to RAW and now look at her. I really, really don’t think Maryse would benefit from a RAW move just yet. Maybe next year, but not right now.
To me, I really think she needs another year on SD, just to be safe. I really think that if shes moved to raw too soon she could become the next Jillian Hall, being pushed into the shadows behind Beth, thus making her a jobber. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong but still give another year on SD to make a bigger name for herself and get a teeny bit more of training until shes raw ready.
It’s a great idea. If they want Kelly Kelly to get more over, this is who she needs to wrestle. Maryse and Melina also had a very solid showing.
I think she’s better off on Raw, although it may be too soon i think of the possibilities. I think she has great chemistry with melina and beth, and it would also prevent their fued from becoming too stale. although maryse is my favorite diva, I dont see her carrying the “top heel” title alone if Michelle goes to Raw and Natalya just doesn’t mesh right with just her and Maryse. So naturally bringing her to Raw could beef her up but I will say if she goes to Raw, Jillian would have to go to SD, there would be one to many blonde heels one the show. But yea i love this idea, not sure what may happen but im all for Maryse to Raw
I hope not. Maryse is honestly EXTREMELY overrated and only has her character working for her. Her skills have been lagging since the injury and she’s been unimpressive showing off the same stuff.
STAY ON SD to develop some more.
i’d love her anywhere, but i dont want her to lose the title soo soon, and def dont want to see gail with the title this soon, the only thing that would make it alright would be if jillian gets drafted to smackdown and FINALLY gets the push she deserves
Hmmm.. I’m thinking a draft for Candice being drafted to Smackdown! But still, i agree that Mickie to Smackdown! and Maryse to Raw doesn’t fit better.
I honestly think it’s too soon, but she was one of my predictions to go to RAW because WWE tends to be impatient. I am still a big fan of Maryse, but I have to agree with .MCH. She has been somewhat lagging since her return from injury. I hope that she steps up her game because she still has huge untapped potential, but it still may be too soon for her to go to RAW. We don’t want another Jillian, as many have mentioned.
Mayse is a top Diva on Smackdown and if she moves to Raw I think she’d be out shined by the others.. I don’t want her to get Jillian’d lol
No offense but Maryse isn’t the top heel on SD. IMO Michelle is the top heel.
I would have to agree that although I am a huge fan of Maryse I don’t think that she is the top heel Diva either. I give McCool that one, even though the WWE fails to give the women any kind of microphone time. Maryse is overrated I’m not that defensive to deny something that’s clearly true, (just like what MCH said) she really has been lacking in the ring ever since her injury, moving her to Raw would be too soon in my opinion, but I think that we all can agree that the WWE is drafting her onto Raw. Besides, the women whose one of my favorite Divas having a ‘tweener’ gimmick seeing as how she never insults the fans just her opponents, I don’t think that the fans on Raw will grasp onto her as heavy as they have in the past. What Maryse and Michelle had chemistry wise in the ring was extremely impressive in my personal opinion and I’m afraid to see how Maryse will hold up without Michelle. I’m afraid to see if the WWE will try to push Maryse’s gimmick and story-lines up to the point where after giving her so much airtime in the beginning of the season as a Raw Diva that just like Mickie James, she will be booted to the back light where she is forced to look like a careless Diva. At the same time and token, if it is true that Nattie is coming to Raw I hope that the WWE does not give all of the heel glory to Maryse. That would be a huge mistake in the long run if Vince was stubborn enough to give Maryse all of the shine in the Heel section on Raw.
Well I just don’t see Maryse being used as much if she goes to Raw

MaryseFan2009, I too don’t FEEL as if Maryse is the top heel diva on SD, but I give her that title simply due to the fact that she has the title. Whoever has the title, in my opinion, becomes the top diva of that brand even if it doesn’t feel like they are. I also agree with everyone else that Maryse is overrated, her character is even lacking since her injury.
If Maryse is given microphone time, then she possibly could become the top heel Diva of Raw. That is a big if though since I believe that Natalya and Beth Phoenix will be on Raw and have heel gimmicks as well. All three women are very talented, but Maryse as of lately hasn’t been as impressive (wrestling wise) which could cause her moving to Raw to be a bad move. If any heel Diva on Smackdown must be drafted to another brand, then I would hope that it would be Michelle McCool. She’s been on Smackdown, she’s been pushed, and now that she has this vicious heel gimmick that I personally would like a lot more if she was given microphone time I would expect for the WWE to shove her to Raw that way Maryse and Gail Kim could fued on Smackdown, Mickie James and Maryse could fued, and hopefully even Ms Michelle could fued with Maryse over on Smackdown. I see Maryse’s chances of being a top heel Diva of Raw slim to none since she’s all of a sudden been pushed to the top of the ladder, where as Michelle has been at the top of that very sladder for some time now and if someone must be booted off than it would be McCool. Hopefully, for the better I would hope. I love Maryse’s character, but I only see her STAYING on Smackdown a good draft decision, even though a lot of people (including myself) see her going to Raw…that’ll be a big mistake. I want Maryse and Mickie fueding with each other, I want Maryse and Gail Kim fueding with each other. If she’s drafted onto Raw than I doubt my dream matches will happen and that’s a complete dissapointment.
I’d like to see Maryse go to Raw and be a top heel diva, however she’s still holding the divas title, and i doubt they’ll want to move the title to another brand.
