Raw Redux (June 8, 2009) – Twice Shy for K2

Last night (as you’ve all probably seen), I was sure that Kelly Kelly would leave Raw as the new Divas Champion. I couldn’t quite put my finger on the feeling but it just felt like it would happen. For some fans, they’ll be relieved to know that my hunch didn’t come true — as Maryse is still your Divas Champion, but for others the change was a welcome one and were left disappointed.

If I’m really honest, the feeling I got last night that we’d have a new champion actually made me realise something: I am so ready for a new Divas Champion. I think Maryse has run her course as the champion and it’s time for some new blood holding that belt. But that’s a story for another time…

This match was a rematch from two weeks ago on Raw, when Kelly picked up a DQ win over Maryse. And compared to that match, this was pretty much of the same. The in-ring work didn’t set the world alight, there weren’t too many memorable spots. In hindsight, the match itself is a blur in my mind. It’s a good thing that I always re-watch the matches a couple of times when writing the Redux, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to tell you anything about this match…

It looks as though the Raw writers have finally stopped being so bipolar and decided the feud they want to book: Maryse vs Mickie, as Mickie joined commentary for this match eyeing up the competition. This sort of stop-start booking harkens back to this time last year, with the ‘Will they? Won’t they?’ feud between Mickie and Katie Lea.

Maryse starts off showing some aggression, but instead of following up her first move with another she decides to do her usual narcissistic shtick. Things start to unravel as both Divas lock up and then for some reason, roll around the ring for a while… I don’t know what’s going on here. Kelly then takes the lead but they both get knocked out by a double clothesline, so far so slow. Maryse hits a very nice spinning backbreaker, as things begin to pick up from here. Kelly does a flip into a roll up from the corner and then takes control of the match some more. Kelly goes up top, but Maryse chops her leg and throws her off the turnbuckle in botchy fashion and hits her patented French Kiss far too close to the ropes for the win.

Post-match, we realise that poor Kelly has been just a pawn and her false push to the Divas Championship is meaningless. Maryse and Mickie staredown and dun dun dun, we’re back to pushing these two. I don’t exactly know what they’re building to considering WWE doesn’t book Divas on pay per view anymore.

A so-so edition of Raw.

The best part of Raw was The Miz & Maryse backstage segment.

I hope Maryse has a really long title reign like Gregory Helms’s Cruiserweight title reign in 2006-07. With all the title changes in WWE these days and the Divas title being new, a really long reign would be good for Maryse and the title. Plus, Maryse being announced as “WWE’s longest reigning current champion” or something like that when she comes to the ring (like Tony Chimel announced Helms when he was CW champ) would be perfect for her character.

Also, her heel persona is just becoming more awesome by the week. She could really flourish in a champion/valet-manager role, like Lita with Edge.

This is the best Raw has been in weeks, which doesn’t say much. The match really was a blur. I was really suprised how bad Mickie was on commentary, she wasnt terrible but at the same time compared to how she used to be on the mic, shes lost something. I was praying Kelly would win this. When I saw Mickie come out I was thinking heel turn, it couldve been great but never happened.

They should have had Kelly win it. She may not be the best wrestler, but Maryse has held the title for 6 months, and it’s getting a little dull. Kelly could win it, and then Maryse win it back, then have Mickie come in and take it off her.

tbh i think this “fake” push with kelly kelly is also wwes way of seeing how the fans will react to kelly being champion. i dont think wwe want to have someone be the first ever diva to hold BOTH titles at least once just yet. they want to build the title first, hence the kelly push. i dont think they want to have mickie appear weak to maryse also. but they have maybe realised tht kelly wont be over as champ idk? it seems they are going with mickie and maryse tho

Don’t you guys find it amazing how we’ve gone from waiting to see what Raw, the action-packed brand, had in store for us, to begging for Smackdown, the explosive, and new brand, to come faster in the week?I mean, things really have changed, and I couldn’t be happier.Blue is my favorite color(And its better than red!), but anyways that’s besides the point. The point is that with the uprising of a brand, came an uprising of the women’s division.

On Raw:Wow, just…wow.I mean, really? Is that the best you’ve got?I think now is the perfect time to utilize the massively under-utilized songstress, and in my opinion, secret weapon, Jillian. After the Maryse-Mickie fiasco is over with, I’d have Jillian turn face.I’d have her turn on Maryse in a tag match, by hitting her with the belt, like Victoria did to Molly Holly. Then she’d say, someone had to shut her trap.Plus, she would definitely make a more than decent champion. What do you guys think?

Why is nobody mentioning how horrendous Mickie’s dress was? She looked huge in it and couldn’t move at all.

Bleh Raw was boring..i really thought Mickie would of gone pyscho. There has been thousands of oppurtunities for her to do so but they are cleary not taken.

Lee, I agree! Mickies dress wasn’t my cup of tea, she didnt look nice in it. I think this is the first time since Mickie has been on commentary since fueding with Victoria back in 2007 (i think). Time sure flys by.

Anywho..Mickie for Divas Champ..sooner rather than later!!!!!!

Maryse is so boring to me now. Nothing changes with her. The character, mannerisms, in-ring ability, move set and general match formula she uses haven’t changed at all since her days of first feuding with McCool. Such a shame.

I was practically begging for Kelly to win, and I’ve never liked her much at all. Maryse used to be one of my favourite divas, but not anymore unless she changes something.

i agree with Mpezza Mayrse is getting dull to me now. When she wasnt Champion and she was winning matches. I was so behind her I wanted her to become Divas Champion. BUt after that Injury she had she started to get dull. But last nights Raw was okay.I didnt want kelly to win and thank god she didnt.Mickie’s dress did look kinda tight but she was still sexy.

The good news is that I heard Micke is suppose to face Mayrse for the Divas title at the Bash. Then again when word like that gets out they foil the plans. Just like what they did with Jillian’s push when she was suppose to win the title this month.

It’s kind of funny, in an odd way, that some people here are liking Maryse less.

She was really hated last year by many Internet wrestling fans, the ones who are really hard on Diva Search girls, call diva matches their bathroom break for the show, etc. “WTF? They fire Cherry and keep Maryse??????????” and the like were pretty common statments, while posters on this site stuck up for her.

Now, she has turned a lot of those fans who thought she should be fired into fans of hers but seems to be losing her original supporters.

Michael Cole is so terrible at commentary. He asked Mickie who she would rather face for the “Women’s Championship” and Mickie responded to him by saying “The Women’s Championship? THE Divas Championship. You’re on cue Cole.”

That line was probably given to Mickie by Vince over the headset.
Story going around is that Vince was nuts on the headset all night (ask Mick Foley about that), especially during the Batista beatdown. Cole is usually Vince’s target and Mickie hasnt done commentary in so long she’s not used to Vince going insane in her ear. Last time Mickie talked on RAW was in January, telling Cody Rodes it was snowing outside, little rusty I bet.

I thought the match was very good. Defiantly better then their first encounter. I am guessing that this is the end of the Kelly & Maryse rivalry and we are going to see Mickie & Maryse for the title soon and hopefully with Mickie being the First Double Champion.
