roundtable

Diva Dirt is proud to introduce a new audio show for you guys, in addition to our audio bulletins — the Diva Dirt Roundtable! This panel discussion show features the entire Diva Dirt team including myself, Erin, Steven and Tiffany. In our Roundtable discussion, we aim to cover current topics from the world of women’s wrestling.

This week on the Roundtable: We talk about WWE’s treatment of it’s returning Divas at WrestleMania 25, following Torrie Wilson’s comments last week in an interview with the Baltimore Sun. Plus, does TNA have too many Knockouts? We also talk about the week in TV; our thoughts on Impact, SmackDown and Raw as well as answer your questions to the team! We are joined this week by guest panlist, Daniel, a reader of Diva Dirt.

To listen to the Roundtable directly on the website, just click on the play button below. However due to the length of the Roundtable discussion, we also have a download link available for those who want to listen to the MP3 file on their computer.

  1. To disagree with Daniel, the fact that we expected something better from WrestleMania’s 25 diva battle royal, is would you be as disgruntled about the match if they had it at Backlash or a regular Raw? Probably not but it’s because everyone buys into Vince’s advertising of Wrestlemania to be the grandest stage of sports entertainment. Where as if you look at past Wrestlemanias, in particular the divas matches. Three of the last five WrestleManias have had a divas match revolving around a Playboy deal. So I myself didn’t expect the divas match this year to be like that of the quality of pre twenties WrestleMania’s.

Next I agree that Tammy, Torrie and the most well known women should have gotten their WrestleMania return moments (i.e a full entrance.) But the lesser known and most frequently seen on T.V seen divas should have been their entrances for the crowd but while at home the viewers see a video package, rather than seeing a music act perform at a wrestling event.

Anyway, another great round table. Shame about not much mention of Shimmer, considering the new DVD’s release soon.

    Good job guys.

  2. Great job again, I’m really impressed with you guys, awesome work.
Thank you for reading all our comments (including mine :P), that was really great. And thank you Tiffany for answering my question.

  3. -I’d agree with Tiffany that this is beating a dead horse so long after the fact, but I’m also with anyone who’d say they should’ve at least taken 30 seconds to announce the returning Divas. I’d defy you to find something like that involving returning male wrestlers not even being mentioned, regardless of the quality of the match. Meanwhile, my biggest problem will always be with having a man besting the entire division.

-Jenna/Sharmell sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, though from the looks of things the match may end up being Kong/Sojo or at least have them heavily involved which should help mitigate some of the epic failure.

-It’s hard to compare the Divas and the Knockouts by number alone since if you really went through it with a stopwatch, the Knockouts would seem to get as much if not more screentime than the Divas do across three shows on any given week. However, I do still think they deserve more, given what they do for the ratings, and this week was a huge step in that direction.

-Tag titles are to me the next logical step in TNA. It would show good faith in the Knockouts and confirm that image they like to put forward of being the more progressive mainstream women’s division, putting their money where their mouth is so to speak. I agree though, that it would take quite a bit of time to build up meaningful teams before any title can be introduced. The two that they do have were listed in the broadcast: Kong/Saeed & The Beautiful People and obviously that’s not enough for a division. Two of Taylor, Sarita and Ayako could make up a high-flying team, but otherwise Steven’s probably right in that they’d need to bring in two or three ready-made indy teams to make the whole thing work properly, though I will say that I loved the Kim/ODB pairing primarily because it was so wtf off-the-wall, but maybe that’s just me.

-Just (continue to) say no to Maria.

  4. Blasted the speakers but still couldn’t hear Melania well, for some reason. Kind of made it tough to follow along. I’ll briefly throw down a thought or two.

Daniel is correct. It isn’t so much that we should “expect” better at Wrestlemania. It’s that the fans DESERVE better. Sadly, the WWE probably thinks it is doing us a favor by throwing so many divas into these clusterfuck matches. “The more divas the better!” They actually think they are giving us a “treat” with these matches. It’s sad really. But hey, the fans did vote for lumberjills over no DQ and a submission match in that infamous Mickie James vs. Lita Cyber Sunday bout.

And of course, they probably think they are keeping everyone happy in the lockerroom by giving them a “Wrestlemania moment”. Unlike with the men, the women are going to have one spot at most Wrestlemanias. One match. That doesn’t bode well for diva fans expecting a serious 1on1 contest like Trish/Mickie. The only remedy for the “great Wrestlemania drought” diva fans are experiencing is for the WWE to come up with some ways to get many of the divas involved in other wrestling angles. Or do what they did when Trish faced Mickie. A separate “T&A” match (Torrie vs. Candice) and a serious match involving a championship.
