As you can see by now, the SmackDown Redux has been gifted to me by the generous Melanie. As she stated earlier, she’ll be handling the Raw side of things from now on. Hopefully you guys will warm to my style of Reduxin’ just as you did with her. Now with that settled, onto the show!
It seems as though the WWE can’t get enough of tag team matches, because it feels like that’s all we’ve been getting for weeks now. Of course, that’s hyperbole, but it’s clear that they’re using “paint-by-numbers” booking as a means to extend this feud between Michelle McCool and Melina. Melina’s got her third partner in a week, teaming with Eve Torres, who one can only assume gave up her seat on the bench for Maria (Don’t cry for Maria, she had more important things to do, like coming out of closets with Dolph Ziggler. I’m not even joking.). Meanwhile, Michelle teams with her new Alicia, Layla. Let’s see what this slight tweak in the ingredients does this week – watch Melina & Eve take on Michelle & Layla below:
Eve and Layla start off the match. Granted, that sentence probably would’ve scared you a few years ago, but their work wasn’t bad at all. Sure, it feels a little deliberate and calculated, but those two Diva Search alums have come far from strutting for Tom Grisham or whoever the hell hosted that thing. Eve remains in control for much of the beginning, until a sick kick to the head by Michelle takes her out. Michelle must have Inspector Gadget legs, because it’s like she reached Eve from the other corner of the ring. Damn.
Michelle tags herself in and after a failed pin attempt, locks Eve in a leglock. It’s clear that Michelle’s been practicing her submissions, because she’s been busting them out on the regular lately. Her focus on using her legs it a smart move – those babies look powerful – and it practically doubles her move-set. I’m all for it. JR calls the move a “figure-four leglock”, with Eve’s head subbing for her legs, I suppose. It’s a pretty awesome move when you put it in that perspective. Eve struggles a bit but eventually breaks out, flipping over and standing up to do so. It kind of makes Michelle’s move look a bit weak, because for all the sprawling about Eve did on the ground, all she had to do was stand up to get free. I would’ve liked to see them keep the hold a bit in the vertical position – that would’ve elicited a few oos and ahhs from the crowd. It’s all about making the champ look powerful, and making her handy dandy new submissions look easy to break ain’t gonna do it.
Eve takes Michelle down with a modified bulldog and gives the hot tag to Melina, who comes in guns-a-blazing. Layla gets tagged in too, and practices her back-bumping technique, taking some punishment from Melina as she goes on the requisite babyface attack. Melina pauses for a moment to taunt Michelle – a look is all it takes – before returning to Layla. The announcers are quick to sell Michelle’s intimidation, in case the look on her face didn’t do it. It’s a little typical to play the “heel is afraid the the face” card, but whatever. Layla shows a little offense for a about half a second (Catch that irish-whip into the corner? That was it.) before taking a kick to the head and a flying takedown. Melina hits her faceplant, but instead of pinning Layla, she picks her up and carries her to her corner, holding out her hand for Michelle to tag. It makes Layla look extraordinarily weak, but it’s a deviation from your typical passive babyface actions on the part of Melina – maybe shades of her old heel character? I gotta say, kind of miss it.
Michelle doesn’t want to tag, and Layla breaks free (Yay, not as weak as I thought!), only to find herself seconds away from falling prey to the Last Call (Boo, spoke too soon.). Michelle takes this opportunity to interject herself, and that allows Layla to get loose, shoving Melina into a kick from Michelle. Layla lifts Melina into a backbreaker – great display of strength – but Melina gets loose pretty quickly, running straight for Michelle and punching her. I like the focus Melina has on Michelle – it keeps the fire in the feud – but it still kind of makes Layla look like nothing more than an afterthought. Layla tries to catch Melina from behind, but she inadvertently knocks Michelle off the apron. Melina rolls Layla up into a schoolboy pin for the 1, 2, 3.
Seconds after the pin, Michelle takes the moment of distraction to attack Melina. It starts as your typical cowardly heel fare, but once she follows Melina outside the ring to continue the beat-down, it gets interesting. Melina telegraphs a kick, allowing Michelle to run into the barrier. She knocks Michelle over it and into the crowd, and it gets REALLY interesting. Melina drags Michelle back to ringside, pounding on her and grabbing her by the foot when she tries to get away. It’s this type of intensity that adds realness to the feud – you feel as though they truly hate each other – and this kind of pull-apart brawl is something Melina’s perfected over the years. In this instance, Michelle runs away (no pull-apart needed), but it’s still pretty powerful, story-wise. Michelle heads for the hills while the referee has to hold Melina back.
The match itself wasn’t much more than Michelle ducking Melina, but it helped give Layla and Eve a bit of a showcase, if only for a few minutes. Those two girls could benefit from some non-tag team action, that’s for sure. Safe to say, the after-match action was much more interesting. Looking back at it, it’s kind of a cop-out to have Michelle run away, but it’s still much better than the “teasing” we get week-in-week out with Maryse and Mickie. If this feud was fizzling, that little move just reignited it.

An okay match, but this Melina-Michelle feud isn’t doing it for me for me. Making Michelle the official #1 contender, THEN creating a feud afterwards didn’t help matters.
I’m enjoying the Mickie-Maryse feud much more, since it’s something different than the typical “You have title? Me want title!” Divas feud, with Maryse frustrating Mickie and the lack of contact between them. Plus, I can’t remember the last time WWE built up any title match for over two-and-a-half months before putting it on a PPV. The last time they did it in the Women’s division was Trish vs. Mickie.
As I said, this tag match was decent, I thought. Natalya must get involved, though, as no one besides her, Michelle, and Melina should fighting over the title right now.

Ok match, nothing special, but much better than last week, not only because Eve was there instead of da other one, but also because of the match itself.
Eve – She continues to impress me, nothing amazing, but good in-ring work. I don’t think she will last long, but she proved how much she wants to be in the company.
Layla – I will always love her, I think she lost a little of style-sense, but oh well, at least we see her in the ring more often.
Melina – Nothing to say here, flawless.
Michelle – Same as Melina. She showed a little more personality, but continues to fail on the charisma departement.
I would give this match a 6/10, because we could see ALL divas in action, and they all did good. I hope we can see better matches however, because I think this one was a little BLAH and Layla deserves more offence.

I can’t believe I forgot this, congrats Erin, awesome job
July 10, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Decent match, the brawl afterwards was great considering last time we saw something like this Maria was spastically attacking Michelle. Melina is really good at these type of attacks, shes got lots in the aggression department. I think it continued the feud nicely but a third person has gotta get into the mix because like the Mickie/Maryse feud its getting stale, but while Raw now have Gail to get into the mix, Smackdown doesnt really have anyone considering Natalya is a valet at the moment. And well done Erin, great job on the redux.
July 10, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Erin – Congratulations.
Whoa, is it me or has Eve gotten a lot better in the ring as of lately? I remember when I use to hate watching Eve wrestle, because she was so sloppy to me, however I’ve grown to love Eve in the ring. On another note, I remember everyone saying that Michelle was being unstoppable, but this weeks Smackdown basically knocked that down. She was never unstoppable to me… she was just always one step ahead of her opponent(s) that night and I always thought that people called her unstoppable, because they didn’t like her charisma. Eh, I thought that this match was a lot more better since we actually saw an attack at the end of the match.
July 10, 2009 at 6:47 pm
im happy melina lost the title…she seems to be way more aggressive in the ring now
I really enjoy michelle’s character. She always waits for her opponent to turn their backs and then she is all tough. I love layla with Michelle too
July 10, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Another solid match…i enjoyed this match more than i did last week’s as everyone involved seemed more comfortable with each other…Eve and Layla continue to improve as well as impress in the ring…Eve especially is less tentative and sells move like a veteran although she still needs work..that kick my Ms. McCool was awesome…this match told a great story at the end as well.
I agree with Erin the figure 4 headlock would be a great addition to Michelle’s moveset….it’s not used often and executed by someone with big strong legs or long in Michelle’s case it looks wicked! As Erin pointed out the move appears weak when Eve just stands and slips out…they should have allowed Michelle to lock it in a bit longer…
A few points about Eve and her progress..looking at her escape from the Cool Clamp..it appeared to me like she was thinking of doing something other than a simple knee smash….then decided not to…she needs to be more confident in her move planning….I also noticed her powerslam is evolving, her first attempt was awkward to say the least but her 2nd try got the job done but had little to no impact…adding a rotation as she did gave the move a bit more polish…it’ll be interesting to see how she further develops her slam..a little more impact and faster rotation is key..but i’d like to see her add her own twist to it, maybe a one footed rotation.
I was somewhat bother by her not even trying to get involved in the post match attack or at least them not have a double brawl of sorts..with Eve running interference keeping Layla at bay…it seems like that’s what was going to happen but it sudden stopped in the middle and turned into Melina v McCool at the end…
Layla’s show of strength was sweet!!! I mean who knew she had that in her??! This opens up a ton of possibilities for her moves.

i love the way layla sell melina’s faceplant
July 10, 2009 at 8:21 pm
First and foremost, congrats on your first Smackdown Redux, Erin. Enjoyed it very much.
About the match, I thought it was a good one (which for Smackdown, it’s no surprise). The post-match was sweet!
As far as the people in the match are concerned, all four did a great job. Judging by how the JR and Todd, especially JR, talked about Eve during the match, she might be next in line for a future Women’s title shot…like after Summerslam, perhaps. A year ago, that would have been a crazy thing to mention, but after seeing how she’s constantly improving, the idea’s not so crazy. Yes, I’m part of the EVE-olvers. It’s a name for Eve fans.
In addition, I’m looking forward into the next chapter of the Michelle/Melina feud as well. Those two are gonna tear the house down the next time they face each other one-on-one.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, guys!!

hahahahahaahaahahhahaha michelle was running like a cawardly bitch at the end so funny
still my favourite sd diva love u michelle

I disagree with ChrisP. I think the Mickie vs. Maryse “rivalry” (what rivalry?!) is Hornswoggle compared Michelle vs. Melina’s Edge. Maryse and Mickie have had, what, two matches with each other? THEY HAVEN’T EVEN HAD A SINGLES MATCH YET!! But my babies Michelle and Melina keep delivering week after week. Just to think, we thought they got the raw end of the 15 Superstar trade, but we still have the two most athletic Divas in the WWE (until Serena gets moved to the main roster) not disappointing every Friday on SmackDown. Am I tripping, or did I hear Melina call Michelle a “bitch” at the end?!?! LOL OH. AND I’M SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY TO SEE LAYLA IN A WRESTLING OUTFIT THAT IS HOT AT THE SAME TIME. I’m so proud of Lay and how far she has come. Now, Eve, I wish would get some REAL wrestling attire made. Hopefully someone is in the process of creating it as we speak!!!! Although it was funny, I don’t like how they’re making Michelle the “typical” heel, the heel where they make them cowards and run away from the face superstar, simply, the cowardly heel. AND I THOUGHT LAYLA WAS FACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 11, 2009 at 12:47 am
I gotta admit I am a little tired of the tag team matches, I think they are excuse to prolong rivalries. Michelle and Melina can’t fight each other forever, so they have to step there game up.
however, All ladies involved has shown great deal of skills. Layla’s strength and her improvement is getting better and better and better the same goes for eve. But I am begging eve to get better attire. the match was real good IMO.
Was maria really in the closet with Dolph Ziggler ?

“I think the Mickie vs. Maryse “rivalry†(what rivalry?!) is Hornswoggle compared Michelle vs. Melina’s Edge. Maryse and Mickie have had, what, two matches with each other? THEY HAVEN’T EVEN HAD A SINGLES MATCH YET!! ”
Well, actually, they’ve had one (on May 4th, a non-title match). And if they hadn’t, I don’t see why that’s a bad thing. I’m looking forward to their Night of Champions match partly BECAUSE they haven’t already had 1000 tag matches or fights at ringside, not in spite of it. I like the whole cat-and-mouse thing they’ve been doing.
July 11, 2009 at 3:39 am
Hahaha, chrisP.
“Well, actually, they’ve had one (on May 4th, a non-title match)”
That was like, what, over two months ago? And that was before Mickie was even the number 1 contender for the belt.
July 11, 2009 at 4:55 am
I liked the match, Eve and Layla have realy stepped up their game and started using some non-basic moves, good to see. Eve is definietly a better partner than Maria, last weeks match was awful imo. Im liking where this feud is going and the catfight was great! I gotta admit i giggled when Michelle hit the baricade with her boot and the crowd reacted, looked like it hurt!
July 11, 2009 at 5:30 am
ChrisP – You are entitled to think what you want of the Michelle and Melina feud, however it seems like all that you came to do was talk about how much more you like the Maryse and Mickie feud. Now, I could careless which feud you prefer because your opinion (no offense) doesn’t mean a thing to me, however it’s like your entire motive of posting was to simply talk about how the Maryse and Mickie feud is better.
“I’m enjoying the Mickie-Maryse feud much more, since it’s something different than the typical “You have title? Me want title!†Divas feud, with Maryse frustrating Mickie and the lack of contact between them. Plus, I can’t remember the last time WWE built up any title match for over two-and-a-half months before putting it on a PPV. The last time they did it in the Women’s division was Trish vs. Mickie.”
No offense, but this isn’t the RAW Redux it’s the Smackdown Redux and everyone who comments in these blogs knows what is going on between the Maryse and Mickie feud, however that isn’t what this blog is about. It’s your opinion and sure you are entitled and able to post whatever you wanna’ post, but at the same time everything that I read when reading your comments is always something negative about the Smackdown Divas feud and always positive about the RAW Divas feud. That’s cool in all, but if you aren’t feeling the feud than why even post in the redux? ..That’s what I don’t get. It’s like if I hated something and yet I continued to do it knowing good and well that I hated it… now, I am not saying that you hate the Smackdown Divas division or the story-lines, however you are constantly commenting on how much you like the Maryse and Mickie feud better.
I personally prefer this feud over the other feud and it’s not because I like the blue brand more than the red brand, but because I can’t seem to even like Mickie James without her psycho gimmick. Sure, she gets a huge fan pop, but I personally don’t like the woman because she doesn’t really amaze me, however she doesn’t really bore me either. I guess I will just wait to make a comment on the Raw Divas in the Raw Redux rather than in the Smackdown Redux.
July 11, 2009 at 6:25 am
Personally, I think the Maryse & Mickie feud is getting stale. It took 2 and a half months for Mickie to finally get a shot at the title. *Shrugs
Maybe I’m just biased against RAW because they had a bad DIva’s Division (before Gail & Alicia crossed over). I mean, goodness, RAW had to get Gail & Alicia just to put on a good match.
July 11, 2009 at 1:07 pm
random question but at night of champions is michelle going defend against melina too?? or is it only one divas match per payperveiw??
July 11, 2009 at 2:21 pm
i think they could start using Natalya in these matches, because continue to ignore a talent like that and putting Eve and Layla there(altough i respect the way they work hard) is a little, let´s say….akward.
and Raw has Mickie,Jillian and Beth to put on a good match, even Maryse, altough she dropped her level when she came to Raw.Gail and Alicia are not the “saviours” of the Raw´s divas division.
July 11, 2009 at 2:36 pm
The Mickie-Mayrse fued is okay in my opinion.I hope they do have a great match at NOC.
The Melina-Michelle fued was the best fued AI have seen in a while.Although they made Michelle dominate the whole
fued.Melina didnt do anything but Pin,but Michelle she got to attack Melina, talk thrash, blah, blah. All Melina did was just get pins.Which I think is unFair. But whateVer Melina is still the better Women.
To the match.I liked this match I loved when Melina Jabbed Michelle LOL.Eve & Layla did Excellent they are really improving.
And Yes I am also tired of these TAG TEAM matches. I wanna see some singles matches again
July 11, 2009 at 5:33 pm
I think this match wasn’t as good as the last time we saw this match when Melina was the champ. I think Layla was not as good as she usually is but she took a great bump. Eve was good and has shown that she is getting better. Melina & Michelle were good as always.
I hate how Michelle is being portrayed as being a coward. Just a month ago she was attacking Melina with no fear and showing no mercy, now she is running at the first sign of danger. I said before that she would be ruined if she won the title and once again I was right.
July 11, 2009 at 5:41 pm
i thought the match was good… but i’m bored of the tag team matches. when it was Gail vs Michelle or even Layla vs Eve it was more interesting. I’d like to see Natalya get involved, and give someone else a womens title push, preferably Natalya. it can’t be Michelle & Melina forever.
July 11, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Okay, I will gladly talk about Melina-Michelle feud. The wrestling’s been good, and I don’t like the feud.
Michelle was already going to face Melina before they even started feuding. She won a title shot on May 22nd, the week after Melina’s first appearance on Smackdown, so they HAD to create a feud because a Melina vs. Michelle title match was already set before they started having a problem with each other.
Plus, they pinned each other before The Bash and fought each other in tag matches numerous times (sometimes the exact same pairings repeated a couple weeks later). Basically, the cookie-cutter women’s feud that WWE loves to book. By the time The Bash happened, I felt like I’d seen them fight 50 times already, even though they hadn’t.
Again, I do think the feud has produced solid wrestling, which is always a plus, but I feel the booking is contrived, generic, and has repeated the same match pairings too much. I feel the total opposite about the Raw feud, which is why I like it so much more. It’s all individual opinion, though, as some people don’t like the Raw feud at all and love this Michelle-Melina deal. Nothing wrong with that.
July 11, 2009 at 10:53 pm
It might not seem like much, but treasure this moment diva fans. We actually have two decently booked, and well ESTABLISHED feuds for both championships. They could be better, but that goes for every division in the company.
Michelle and Melina did great with their brawl. The WWE should take notice, that any time their divas are allowed to go “over the top” a bit, the crowd gives them a great reaction (see Beth vs. Melina right before Melina’s injury). This is absolutely where Melina shines, and I must admit that Michelle (and the writers) have done a good job re-inventing her persona. She is almost flat-out psychotic.
I enjoy seeing both feuds built in different ways. Melina and Michelle have waged war, while Mickie/Maryse has gone with the traditional “keep them separate before the title match” route. Wrestling foreplay, as I like to call it. As a result, Michelle/Melina will probably come across as the more entertaining feud from week to week, but I believe that Maryse vs. Mickie might see a bigger payoff when they finally get to rumble at Night of Champions.
They are really conscious in reminding us Michelle is the first to hold both titles. Either they are simply trying to get her over (possible) or they have something they are building up. Like a match with Mickie at Summerslam…*wink wink*
