Last night’s Raw was a scary one, as WWE seemingly found a balance between the throwback T&A and actual wrestling. However, the two don’t quite go together and as the title of this post would suggest, I liken it to ‘running with scissors’. It wasn’t a bikini contest nor was it a respectable wrestling match, it just didn’t work. I fear WWE will use this new found balance on future shows, in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if SmackDown got it’s ‘turn’ this Friday.
I can honestly tell you that on first watch, I had no idea what was going on in the ring, all I could remember was the end of the match. The rest is a blur since I, and probably many of you, couldn’t get past the ‘wrestling in bikinis’ crap. So rewatching the match for this Redux is the only way I can actually talk about the wrestling in the match — but then again, I don’t necessarily want to. It just seems pointless to call the wrestling [as Michael Cole did last night] in such a match. However for the sake of this column, I will attempt to talk about the match…
First of all, I have no problem with the occasional swimsuit type stuff… just keep it out of the ring. I think all the girls [except Kelly Kelly] looked gorgeous in their swimsuits, but I would prefer to see that in a Summer Skin photoshoot or a Divas magazine. They looked great, but stuff like that should be reserved for a beach themed photoshoot or something — I don’t want to see it on Raw. Rosa’s one piece was probably my favourite, she looked hot. The only Diva that didn’t look great was Kelly, in her cliched tacky hot pink bikini.
So looking at this match, it’s funny how they had Kelly as the centerpiece of this match; it goes to show just what they think of her, having her be the ‘eye candy’ to sell the match rather than trying to establish her as an actual wrestler, which she has the chops to become. Instead of coming out to the top babyface’s music like they usually do [which is Mickie James], this week we have the girls coming out to Kelly’s music and her taking the center spot which is usually Mickie’s. Any other week it’d raise eyebrows, but it seemed very clear that they did it on purpose to sell Kelly as the ‘eye candy’, which is funny because Mickie looked 10x hotter in her bikini than Kelly did. And this should put to rest those horrible rumours about Mickie’s weight, because she looked banging! I guess blondes are hotter in the WWE Universe *eyeroll*
Meanwhile, leading the heels was Maryse flanked by Rosa Mendes and Alicia Fox. I pretty much guessed that would be the team beforehand. No Beth Phoenix, go figure… I don’t know if she should feel offended WWE didn’t want to put her in a bikini or if she should feel honoured. Perhaps a bit of both?
My two favourite new Raw Divas, Alicia Fox and Gail Kim kick things off and Alicia from the outset looks aggressive, getting in Gail’s face. Good look for A-Fox, it shows that she’s not afraid to mix it up with the veterans, as we’ve already seen in the past. The more experienced Gail however uses her quick wit to roll up Gail, but Alicia kicks out and goes for a cover of her own. Gail hits a nice hurricanrana but Alicia manages to get the upperhand and tags out to Rosa Mendes. Oh lord, let us pray…
Thankfully, Rosa isn’t going for anything technical and soon G-Kim takes the lead with a nice clothesline on Rosa followed by a tag to Kelly, who hits an impressive handspring elbow. Kelly goes for a monkey flip, but Rosa pushes her onto the mat. Rosa goes for a cover and then lays in some kicks. That’s it Rosa, just keep to the stomping, it’s best you don’t try any actual moves. Alicia Fierce [Sasha Fierce, get it?] is back with a headlock for a little while before Kelly counters. Kelly and Alicia tag out at the same time to Maryse and Mickie and things pick up!
Mickie hits some jumping clotheslines on Maryse and knocks her partners off the apron. She then hits Maryse with a nice hurricanrana from the corner before going up top, hitting an awkward Thesz press. Mickie goes for the cover but in come A-Fox and Rosa and we all know what this means… six Diva brawl!
In all the excitement, ‘Maurice’ catches Mickie off guard throwing her into the ringpost and hitting her French Kiss DDT, which didn’t look as good as it usually does, for the win. Interesting ending and it almost salvaged what I would call a throwaway match. They seemingly tacked on a little storyline to the end which is good. Usually the babyfaces get the win for the fan reaction, but it’s nice to see that they actually developed the storyline after what was essentially a pointless match by having Maryse pin her opponent.

Ohh, I thought WWE gave that pointless bikini contest that’s fishy to say it’s a ‘match’.
But I have to say, that was a match! Glad that Raw gave it up what we crave for!

i thought the match was good,ive been wanting to see something different from the divas anyways instead of the same old tag match or single’s match,just as long as they dont do like they used to do,kicking,slaping,match over in 2min.,but i honestly think this was a good match for a bikini match,especially when gail kim was in the ring and mickie,kelly’s only good spot was the handspring elbow
This match was just Dumb!! I thought they coudnt do Bikini matches anymore due to PG 13 or whatever.
The people who did good was Gail,Alicia & Mickie. The other rest were just bland. On another note I dont know why people are saying Mayrse finally beat Mickie. Mayrse pinned Mickie last year at SurVivor Series in that SD vs Raw divas tag team match.
I would have settled ofr a Nice Mickie vs Alicia or Gail Kim vs Beth
I liked the match, it was acceptable.
Mickie – She did well, not as good as Gail (in my humble opinion), but she was good.
Gail – Great showing by Gail, she really is an awesome wrestler.
Kelly Kelly – Bland, she isn’t a bad wrestler, she is just too boring in the ring.
Maryse – For me, she’s losing her shine, that French Kiss looked really bad, I hope she gets a good showing at NOC.
Alicia – Shows awesome in-ring skills, great charisma and bangin body. Continues to improve quickly.
Rosa – Acceptable showing. I think she’s a little above Maria and Eve, but she still isn’t as good as Alicia (in-ring wise).
This match was probably a 7/10, if you can pass the bikini thing, it was a fast-paced match with all divas bringing something into it. Alicia and Gail showed that they’re Raw material. I would replace Rosa with Jillian just because we haven’t seen Lil Jilly in a while and it’s kind of weird to see Mendes without her mentor Beth behind.
Rosa(which I Luv) is not a better wrestler then eve,I can tell u that.The match was decent IMO I got to see my Raw girls Gail,Rosa,Mickie at the same time.I wasn’t to thrilled about the idea to wrestle in a bikini.
Alicia is really out shining Maryse over there on Raw.
Beth needs a break she had all of 2008 and the first couple months of 2009 she was starting get on my nerves,its nice to see them letting other divas shine for once.
i think Mickie/Maryse&Gail, looked absolutely gorgeous! i really loved Mickie rockin the whole pocahontas look and i loved Maryse’s bikini, all the bling and Gail’s was simple but for some reason it looked very good on her!
i can understand why they choose bikini’s cause it’s summer but i do think it unnessecary i’m sure there are a lot of other ways to ‘share’ the summerfeeling, this will only make a lot of people think, oh lord they are wrestling in bikin’s again…, i also think SD will have a bikini match this friday but oh well we’ll see it would be a shocker if they didnt have on tho,
p.s is it just me or did maryse got a bit more of a ‘pop’ then Miss k2?
Im scared that on SmackDown we’ll have a bikini contest :O rather than a bikini tag team match.
If it’s a bikini tag match, I’d like to see Michelle, Natalya and Layla defeating Melina, Maria and Eve after Natalya makes Maria tap via Sharpshooter.
If it’s a (ugh) bikini contest, maybe Melina picking up the biggest pop, defeating Maria, Eve and Layla. After the contest Michelle would appear and attack Melina while she celebrates with Torres and Maria and hit her with the FaithBreaker, Eve and Maria go check on their friend while Layla leaves with McCool smirking.

I had no issues with the match. What I DID have issues with was the interchange between Seth Green and Triple H prior to the match. When Seth Green announced the Six Diva Summer Swimsuit Spectacular (whatever the hell it was called) and then saying it was all in the spirit of competition; then Triple H gets all dicky and condescending and said something like “Oh, absolutely, why else would we want these girls out here in nothing but bathing suits” or something like that, I don’t know, I didn’t have close-captioned on. But I do know that the whole thing left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.
I’m not gonna lie, when Seth first announced the match I was pissed. HHH didn’t make it any better, he was acting like a dickhead. I was like WTFH?
It turned out to be a great match, as it was more so wrestling than prance around & catfight in bikinis/bathing suits.
G-Kim looks really comfortable in the ring and she did look beautiful in her bathing suit.
Mickie, Rosa, and A-Fox looked amazing!!
Everyone here on DD.com is right, A-Fox is improving rapidly, she’s outshining her fellow model K2, IMO.
Maryse’s DDT to Mickie looked wicked! Mickie sold it very well.
A decemt match as they just wrestled in bikinis instead of having a water balloon fight or whatever the hell they used to do with these things.
Lots of weird booking, though. What’s with Maryse and Michelle McCool switching roles? All of a sudden, Michelle is running from Melina while Maryse, I guess, got over her fear of Mickie, somehow. A lot of build for nothing, it seems. Also, if WWE plans on having Mickie win the title at NoC, I really don’t get why they’d portray Maryse as a coward for weeks, then take the title from her to boot. If Maryse keeps the title, that would soften the impact of the coward stuff and the clean losses she has taken, but if she’s going to no longer be champion after the PPV, the coward stuff and all the clean losses to Mickie and Gail with hardlly any revenge just makes her look bad for no reason.
One win over Mickie means little if Mickie gets a 3rd clean win over Maryse plus the Divas title at the PPV.
I think the match was fun, a nice mix of T&A and actual wrestling. If they are going to do the ‘bikini’ things I would rather have them do it while wreslting as opposed to a contest. And I don’t know what some of you are talking about, Maryse’s DDT looked amazingly strong last night, don’t really like Mickie but she sold it like a pro gotta give her props. I also really like how they are handling Alicia, she has so much potential. The reason she is shining so bright is because right now she really isn’t getting much offense in during matches, all she does is sell other people’s moves most of the time and when she does gain some offense it’s not moves she can’t handle. That’s what they used to do with Kelly and that’s why she used to look so green all the time. Rosa needs to go back to FCW full time, sorry.
I found last night’s match disgusting…I guess WWE gets to pick and choose what their PG rating means?
The only one that looked good was Rosa..The rest either looked anorexic or in Mickie’s case her bathing suit was completely unflattering and made her look heavier then she really is.
Not to mention more then once I saw a lot more of the Divas then I wanted to.
I don’t see what the big deal is in them wrestling in bikinis. Can anyone honestly say that they saw more skin here than they do on a regular basis? No. In fact, when Kelly was shown walking backstage, I thought we were in for a regular tag match and that she was wearing one of her regular tops. It was only when King said it was a bikini match that I realized she was a wearing a bikini. The only one who showed that much more skin was Alicia. Maryse showed pretty much the same amount of skin, same for Gail, Kelly, and Rosa. Mickie only showed her legs, and that was the only difference from most of the attires she has worn in the past. So yeah, if people are going to complain about them wrestling in bikinis and how it’s not PG, then people should be complaining about the attires Divas wear on a regular basis.
Anyway, I quite liked the match. Maryse’s DDT was sick, and Mickie sold the hell out of it; however, I’m still waiting for her to sell Maryse’s DDT the way she used to sell Lita’s.
I have to agree with you wwe141 I thought it was good to see something different instead of the same ol’ same ol’ like the smackdown divas do every week.

honestly this was descent, and is not that the bikini’s helped, but because the PG rating, and Michael Cole calling the match, you got the feel that this was less about the bikini’s, and focused more on the match. See with Bikini, matches in the past, the main focus u could always tell was the Bikini’s, but I didn’t get that same feeling for this one. Just seemed like a wrestling match, but in scantily clad clothing as a bonus. The outfits weren’t too reveling (some women would prob beg to differ) and its nice to see a change in attire, after the same old bland outfits every week. Plus the men wear less clothing, so stop complaining.
Also IDK what ur talking about….that DDT was insane!!! hardly EVER do I jump out of my seat in a DIVA match, but Mickie can really sell that DDT. U shoulda heard my brother and I’s ooooohhhhhsss, and ahhhhhhhsssssss we thought she got seriously injured.
The only thing that killed the match would be Rosa’s lack of moveset, and standing around…only offense punches, and kicks, and of course that bad thezs press. Those are my thoughts.

It was a decent match. And I agree Mickie works that DDT crazy well. The whole meat market bikini aspect drags us back down to earth as far as where a woman’s place is in the WWE, though. Beth should just be happy she’s not considered socially stereotypically beautiful enough by management as to avoid doing all the objectifying activities the others are subject to.
I’ve never been one to be bothered by gimmick matches, its not big deal to me. The match was actually good, i like Alicia and Gail’s exchange at the start of the match. OMG is it me or does Kelly have the best body in WWE, i’m jealous as hell but ehh I’ll live lol. That aside it was welcomed change of pace for me, even if it was built around the whole divas wrestling in bikini aspect.
the match was by no means “sloppy” it was well put together and honestly from all the womens point of view in here i noticed that they did not like the match compared to us male fans. but i think it was great to see the divas do something a little different once in a while. maryse’s ddt was sick i believe it was actually one of her best ones. and all the divas looked gorgeous. even rosa and kelly performed better tonight. but if the wwe has these bikini matches like too often or even like every week or month that would get super annoying, but its SUMMER. i liked the match
Watched the match and I thought it was very good from all six women. I don’t think either women made any mistake. Rosa though not as good as the others didn’t do anything that was bad so she might be finally learning. Gail & Alicia’s fight at the beginning was great and I would love to see these two enter a one on one feud sometime soon. Kelly looked strange wearing those shoes, she just looked like the odd one out. Maryse was very good tonight and she might be getting back her groove since her injury. The DDT was great as it looked more like an implant DDT and it looked so devastating that it was made believable.

I think you got it wrong this time Melanie. I thought Raw was very good. The girls put on a very solid wrestling match, and Maryse definitely looked like she caused serious pain to Mickie with the DDT. I think you let the bikinis that they wore blind you from truly seeing the talent that was portrayed last night.
The overall match was pretty entertaining and what made it plus for me was that maryse pinned mickie and that kelly kelly was actually in a match this week:)
Manda – I actually got a kick out of the discussion between Seth and Triple H, because it’s true – the WWE Divas no matter how amazing they are in the wrestling ring will simply be eye candy. Nothing more nothing less. Do I like that the WWE has basically made their Divas eye candy? Absolutely not and at one point I actually assumed that the WWE was past just making their Divas eye candy, but I was one-hundred percent wrong. Maybe I was giving the WWE far too much credit at first, because this was simply unexpected, however the match wasn’t a bad one at all.
I agree with you “knockout12″, because in my personal opinion aside from the bikini’s I felt that the match was overall a good one. Will it be rememebered? It probably will. Why? Because the horny little boys and the men watching the WWE do not care about the matches that the Divas are in… it’s all about the skin, this match plus the discussion between Triple H and Seth proved that you truly only get a reaction when showing some skin.

i thought the match was good to very good. at lesat much more entertaining than many previous matches. who cares that they were in bikinis? some of their wardrobes is almost as skimpy as a bikini anyways.. as long as it doesnt happen all the time..and yes i am a woman. its nothing more than you woudl see at the beach..and they could have been a lot skimpier but they werent..i thought they all did well, and it was nice to see rosa mendez not screw up..and ya i thought maryses ddt was awesome it looked a lot more powerful than the other ones.
I thought the match was okay, but I was not at all happy with what Triple H was saying before the match. That was just unneccesary.
But onto the match again, I thought it was fine, pretty much a standard match besides them wearing bikinis which aren’t to much different from what most of them wear anyways. Gail Kim and Mickie James definitely saved it for me. Their parts stood out from the others. I thought the DDT by Maryse looked good, actually.
Afca, I thought the same thing. Maryse did seem to get more of a pop than Kelly. Kelly was actually one of the most unpopular in the match with that crowd last night, which I can’t blame them. She was, imo, very boring in that match.

I didn’t think there was anything wrong with them wrestling in bikinis. Its summer and they were all pretty tame. I loved that French Kiss DDT. Mickie made it look awesome. I’m glad they put Maryse over because now it really spices things up and makes Night of Champions a lot more appetizing. It was good to hear her get a pop to shut all of those haters up who claim that none of the fans care about her. Kelly Kelly’s shoes made her look cute and stand out in my opinion. My problem is Alicia Fox. I think she’s an excellent seller but all of her offense was dreadful in my opinion. She actually reminded me a lot of Terri Runnels. She should stick to what she does best and remain a punching back until she sharpens up her offensive moves.
I quite liked the match regardless if they were wearing bikinis or not! Gail continues to stand out as does Alicia. Rosa…former OVW Womens Champion really? Think the reason they came out to Kellys music was cuz they were in Florida. Sick DDT by Maryse hopefully get to see more offence from her at Night of Champions

Tbh, I think the match was such a poor quality because they were all trying to do stuff that wouldn’t pull down their bikini bottoms and expose too much. You just can’t wrestle in skimpy clothing.
the match was great! No wardrobe malfunctions either and everything lookked good. Mickie sold that DDT AMAZING! she made it look solid! Thats the thing with Maryse DDT, its not how Maryse sells it, its how her opponents sells it.

I’m torn between thinking it’s cheap to have their top Divas wrestling in bikinis, and being glad they got air time with an actual match.
I have nothing against the Divas in bikinis. But as another commenter mentioned, isn’t this against Vince’s “PG-13″ look?
Maybe Vince is reconsidering that stand.
This match kept me entertained.
