SmackDown Redux (October 2nd, 2009) – Mind Your Own Brand Business!

Last time on SmackDown Superstars: The dynamic duo of Michelle and Layla defeated the not-so-dynamic team of Maria and Melina. Maria played rag doll and Melina wasn’t there to save her from interference from Michelle, so the loss only served to push the former friends ever further apart.

This week: Are we going to see a blow-up anytime soon, or will this simmer longer? Are we in for more skits, or will this 10th Anniversary special be more wrestling-based, with the drama reserved for a less prestigious event?

Justin Roberts tell us that this is a Lumberjack match for the Women’s Championship. We are then graced by the presence of Divas from all three brands (All entering to Eve’s music.. I guess because it’s the most generic?), and it’s easy to figure out who’s the challenger by eliminating each Diva that walks down the ramp in her awkward street clothes. Next through the curtains is Melina, and as she makes her way to the ring they cut to a quick shot of Maria. I suppose that will suffice for this week’s storyline advancement? I absolutely loved Natalya’s reaction to Melina’s entrance, like she was appalled. Kinda cute. Michelle is the last one out.

They start with a tie-up, and Michelle quickly uses her knee brace to take Melina down, planting it into her gut. She attempts a pin, but no luck. She pulls Melina to her feet, pummeling her into the ropes and then dragging her back to the middle by her hair. A shot to the spine later, she attempts to whip Melina into the ropes, but she reverses it, stopping her momentum and nailing Michelle in the face. She hoists herself onto the ropes and perform her patented leg attack, choking Michelle. She attempts to finish it off with a chop to the head, but Michelle pushes her up and over the ropes. Melina lands on the apron, fighting Michelle through the ropes.

Michelle reaches for a jab but Melina splits–literally–by landing in a split on the apron and then nailing her with a shot to the stomach. Michelle responds with a dropkick, sending Melina out into the Lumberjack’s domain. Thankfully, she landed on the “good girl” side, because all they want to do is help her to her feet. Michelle sees this and brings Melina into the ring herself. Michelle continues with her attack, kicking Melina and pounding her face into the mat. A few uppercuts, and Michelle attempts another whip, but Melina reverses it again, using this momentum to go on offense.

A few strikes later, she plants Michelle with a flapjack, going for the pin. The ref counts to two, and meanwhile I wonder how absurd it would be for a Diva to win the Women’s Championship with a flapjack. She gets the champ to her feet, but Michelle kicks her, whipping her into the ropes. On the return, Melina meets her with a kick of her own, then striking her in the head and dropping her to the mat. She goes for the ropes again, but she overestimated the kindness of strangers, venturing by the “bad girl” side. And sure enough, Jillian grabs her leg, distracting her.

This seems t have set Melina off more than a simple leg tug should have, and she climbs out onto the apron, diving into the heel Divas. This initiates Diva pandemonium, with girls in short dresses and high heels awkwardly trying to fight each other without giving the 5-year-olds in the front row and eyeful. Amongst the mess she created, Melina tries to climb back into the ring, but Rosa gets some licks in before Michelle pulls her inside. They battle towards one side of the ring, as some of the Lumberjacks spilled into a corner of the ring. Michelle whips Melina into the far turnbuckle and the referee works to get rid of the invaders.

As Michelle runs toward Melina in the corner, she is met with the bottom of her boots, and Melina climbs the turnbuckle, readying her an attack. However, out of nowhere comes Beth Phoenix, who grabs Melina by the leg and crotches her on the top rope. Melina wilts forward, and Michelle takes advantage of this fortuitous position, easily latching her into the Faithbreaker and nailing it. She gets the pin and the win. The camera zooms in on Beth staring rather intensely at Michelle, and I can’t help but wonder if that actually means something. But I’m going to stick on the side of caution and say it doesn’t.

I’m pretty sure this match was just an excuse to fit as many Divas into the Anniversary show as humanly possible, so what better for that than a Lumberjack match? I’ve never liked them too much–too many moving parts–and this match didn’t do too much to change my mind. It wasn’t terrible by any means, but it just felt like Michelle and Melina were just performing a few moves in between interacting with the Lumberjacks. It’s outrageous that this was dubbed a Women’s Championship match, because it’s clear that there wasn’t enough time or focus for such a match, especially one that we’ve been building towards for months. Why toss it away on a match that’s going to be 60% wrestling, 40% outside interference? I guess they were going for a “big” match for SmackDown’s 10 Anniversary, and didn’t really think it through, just slapping the Women’s Championship logo before the match.

I’m not saying I was hoping for storyline advancement or anything, but if you want to do a fun match and include Divas from all the brands, why not do a fun match that we otherwise wouldn’t see? Why not put the Divas who are separated the rest of the year into matches together? and dear God, WHY put the Women’s Championship on the line in such a throwaway match? I understand they wanted it to have a big feel, but it didn’t feel epic, just shallow..

With the outside interference, I definitely felt that this match didn’t really get off the ground. It’s a real shame.

Decent match considering the time they were given, it really sucks they werent given anymore time considering the theme/length of the show. I liked the interference from Jillian and Beth.

it wasn’t a stare down with michelle, beth was just smiling at michelle,
IMO i doubt this is the beginning of a rivalry,
just beths revenge for melina taking her title and running off with it

it looks like things will kick off with maria soon
her going scrunch faced as melina came to the ring was a bit of a obviouse hint

I agree with TheregoesKitty I dont think that will start a beth & Michelle fued it was just revenge off Melina….But then again I would love to see a Michelle/Beth/Melina fued…..but I honestly think if beth goes to SD then we can say by bye to Layla b cuz she wont get that much screen time no more

I missed 4 names: Maryse, Mickey James, Gail Kim, Courtney Taylor

Maryse is understandable because of her knee, Courtney has unknown personal issues, and Mickey might’ve given an offday because she worked lots of dates even though she was injured. But for Gail Kim we still dont have an explanation. Earlier people assume she was pulled from the canadian tour because she was going to be moved to Smackdown, but leaving her off this show doesnt make sense.

Umm Yea what can you say about a lumberjill match that we have seen plenty of times. This week for the divas sucked IMO.

The match itself was definitely not up to par to what I imagined, they were hesitating quite a bit. Could have been a hell of a lot better.

I think it does mean something. Remember WWE Bragging Rights is just 3 weeks away and it’s supposed to be a Raw vs Smackdown type ppv. So maybe this will lead into the Sd divas vs the Raw divas? Or maybe just Michelle vs Beth who knows, WWE is so stupid that they will ruin everything!

  • MickieJamesFan07
    October 2, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Armando- Wouldn’t it be really awesome to see Mickie and Beth vs Michelle and Melina at Bragging Rights?? A heel team with a face. and since Mickie and Beth hate eachother as do Michelle and Melina, there’s bound to be drama!

  • Armando
    October 2, 2009 at 8:40 pm

That does sound exciting, I’ll watch that! Hopefully they keep the tradition of it being a fan based ppv and let the fans vote and maybe that could be one of the options and if we all vote for it, that will totally happen. WWE tends to ruin the divas during Halloween type so I wouldn’t be surprised if the divas end up doing a costume contest like they have done in the past. I just wish WWE would add more divas to their ppvs!

    October 2, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Armando- I have been reading that all thats changing the PPV is the name and it will be RAW vs SD, so I am sure that the fans will still be able to vote on things. The Halloween contests don’t really bother me, its the fact that its all they do with the divas, so there’s no match.

The video was actually removed, but I’m looking forward to watching Michelle take on Melina. No matter how many matches they have against one another, I’m always impressed [two talented WWE Divas], and I expect for this match to be the same even though it’s apparent that it’s a short match.

match seemed rushed and thrown together last minute (like u guys said …. match showing all the girls lol) i think beth will be going to smackdown cause when the brawl broke out she didnt get involved at all ….. plus with maryse returning soon and alicia fox recent hot streak on raw plus melina could use a new opponent

IMO, this is the fundamental and never-ending problem with the WWE and the Divas in general. Too few wrestlers spread over too many brands. With an average of only 4-6 per each brand, how can you honestly come up with creative and original storylines when ultimately it’s going to be the same matches week after week? Not that the WWE truly cares about properly developing the Divas anyway.
I’m one who believes that the only way for the Divas to ever truly shine is for them to have their own weekly one hour show. I guarantee that an all divas show on Thurs. nights would crush the terrible ratings that Superstars is getting. With 4-5 matches each week, you’d be able to match anyone up with anyone, properly develop characters, and cultivate alliances and feuds. Talented stars like Katie Lea and Natalya wouldn’t be relegated to embarassing valet roles. The Bellas, Rosa, Tiffany and others would be able to get the work they so desperately need in front of big crowds.

It didn’t surprise me when Kristal Marshall revealed that Michael P.S. (Predictably Stupid) Hayes was
involved with the writing for the Divas. He strikes me as the typical type of writer/booker that purely
sees the Divas as eye candy, not worthy of interesting, and involved storylines. I’m pretty new here but has it ever been discussed as to why WWE seemingly has never had a former female star to be involved with writing for the Divas (Ivory, Lita, maybe Jacqueline)?? And to me, Stephanie McMahon’s stint a while back doesn’t count.

I hope people aren’t overreacting again with inter-brand feuds and illusions of divas switching shows. Tonight was just an anniversary show with all three rosters present. Zack Ryder isn’t jumping to Raw because he couldn’t get in the VIP Lounge.

Royal Rumble is around the time wrestlers usually begin appearing on other shows, leading up to Wrestlemania. Shortly after, it’s the annual Draft. I highly doubt WWE switches wrestlers again this year and kill the buzz of next year’s roster draft.

Bragging Rights I think of as WWE’s equivalent of an All-Star Game, so I don’t expect anything but a one-off exhibition. Same if they do inter-brand Survivor Series diva match. If history repeats itself, I don’t expect any crossover brand storylines happening until early next year.

    It was a little… meh… uninspired.
I think it should’ve been Maria that pushed Melina off the top rope, not Beth. I mean, did you see the look she gave her as she came in? That way, it would’ve incorporated into some kind of storyline.

And does Savannah EVER wear any colour except purple?

  • xmelissaa
    October 3, 2009 at 11:27 am

Also, did anyone else notice in Smackdown’s new intro, basically all of the divas are shown twice? In Raw’s titles, only like… 3 of their divas are shown.
That could just be me being overly-observant though.

  • WWEDivaFan09
    October 3, 2009 at 9:50 pm

I couldn’t agree more xmelissaa. Having Maria push Melina off the rope would have made more sense than having Beth do it. But, ‘making sense’ and ‘WWE’ do not belong in the same sentence.

I usually try not to be overly critical, but it’s time to unify the women’s titles. The Diva belt experiment is a failure, IMO, because there’s not enough Divas or time allowed to the division. I don’t suggest they eliminate the Diva belt, just unify it for now and let the unified champ move around the brands, like JeriShow does in the tag division. It would solve the problem of lack of challengers.

And please, do NOT make the unified champ Michelle McCool, one of the most boring top level heels in WWE Diva history, IMO. I know she has fans and I respect that, but her push and keeping the belt despite being inactive due to an injury for a long period has more to do with being the Undertaker’s girlfriend than her abilities. There’s always been backstage politics in the WWE. She’s not terrible, but as the writer Gertrude Stein once wrote about the city ofOakland, Ca., “There’s no there there.”

Which divas were missing from the lumberjill match on Smackdown? I can understand why Raw champ Mickey James and ECW manger Tiffany were unavailable, but where was Gail Kim? Anyone else missing?
