WWE Bragging Rights Review: SmackDown Glam Slams to Victory

The SmackDown team may have been led by WWE Women’s Champion, Michelle McCool but it was the newest addition to the roster that was a blue beacon of success for the brand. Decked in SmackDown colours, a royal blue Glamasuit [as we have affectionately started calling them], Beth Phoenix Glam Slammed her way to victory and had a helping hand in SmackDown taking the Bragging Rights trophy last night.

To the beginning now, let’s take a look at the match as it happened… Team SmackDown make their entrance first with the Women’s Champion debuting a new piece to her attire — a robe. Proving she can do nothing right, this one has already hit a sore spot on the interwebz with “AJ Styles rip-off” comments. Mmm… trivial. Meanwhile, Beth Phoenix is looking mighty Glamariffic in royal blue. While Team SmackDown have opted for eye-popping colours like royal blue, emerald green and hot pink, Team Raw are much more subdued in their colour choices.

We kick things off with Beth Phoenix and Gail Kim, in something of a dream match. Beth starts off with a kick to the gut followed by the Divas exchanging forearms. The crafty former Women’s Champion, Gail Kim goes for a mid-rope crossbody but is caught but the powerful Phoenix. Gail manages to flip things over into a pin attempt but Beth kicks out. The Glamazon begins woman-handling Kim before Michelle McCool blind-tags herself in. Gail manages to subdue the Champ with a lovely hurricanrana that is sold well by McCool, who then cowers into her corner allowing Natalya the tag.

Another dream match here; Nattie vs Gail. The physical third-gen Diva slams Gail to the mat. As things progress Gail hits her lovely launch through the ropes on Natalya followed by that unorthodox jumping butt bump. Kelly Kelly is then tagged in to the biggest pop so far, Kelly works well with Nattie and keeps the pace up with a twilt-a-whirl hurricanrana. Natalya then hangs Kelly on the ropes, showing her prowess. Natalya, with her brute force, drives Kelly into the corner and begins kneeing her. This all looks rather ferocious which is perhaps the biggest difference between Natalya and the Glamazon; while both share powerhouse quality — there’s nothing pretty about Nattie’s offense while Beth is a little more Diva-esque. In the corner, Kelly goes for a sunset flip but to no avail as Michelle tags in. After a short exchange, in comes Beth as Team SmackDown begin their ‘wear down’ of Kelly. Kelly makes a desperate effort to tag in Melina or Gail but the powerful Beth manages to drive her back to the Team Blue corner. Michelle is back in now and hangs in there with her team mates, throwing Kelly around like a rag doll. Beth Phoenix then blind-tags herself in much to McCool’s shock, Kelly begins fighting back with a hurricanrana into a rollup but Beth kicks out. Kelly with a jawbreaker on Beth and finally hits a tag to Melina.

The fiery Divas Champ is reunited with her old rival now with forearms and kicks. Beth picks up Melina by the throat, but Melina nicely manages to kick herself out of the position. The banshee-like Melina then quickens the pace as she drop-toe-holds Beth onto the middle rope followed by her patented knee-smash and then hair-smash. The match now begins to hit it’s stride as Melina knocks Michelle off the apron, meanwhile the Glamazon comes back with a shot to the stomach followed by a springboard suplex that Melina counters into a small package. A distraction from Natalya and Gail allows Michelle to get into the ring and roll over the Divas with Beth now on top but Melina kicks out. Melina is thrown into the ropes but then goes for a hurricanrana but then modifies it into another face-smash to the canvas.

The Divas Champ goes for the pin but Natalya and Michelle come in and break it up, and cue end-of-match melee. Gail hits a clothesline on Nattie, Kelly hits a dropkick on Michelle. In the ring, Beth throws Melina into the corner, Melina attempts to jump overhead but is caught by Beth. Not sure what’s going on here, but I guess Melina’s head was supposed to meet the turnbuckle… it doesn’t. Anyway, Beth then sets up the Glam Slam and leads her team to victory.

Thoughts on the match: Very good. Well put together, with every Diva getting decent ring time and well executed, minus perhaps that end spot with the turnbuckle. I felt every Diva held their own and played their part well. For a pay per view effort, I think this is in line with Hell in a Cell and the two Melina-McCool matches of the summer, as being solid efforts on pay per view. The match had a good length that allowed the drama to unfold and didn’t end too quickly or abruptly unlike many Knockouts matches in the past months. The timing was just right.

Considered the weak link going in, I think the layout of the match worked to Kelly Kelly’s advantage and she was used in a role that was believable, playing the underdog that is beaten down by Team SmackDown before getting a hot tag. That process of Natalya, Beth and Michelle all taking turns to subdue played nicely in tagging Melina into the match for the first time. This was where I felt the match picked up and the exchange between Beth and Melina was good, Melina perhaps had the spot of the match with the modified hurricanrana into the face-smash.

The ending leads to many questions and booking wise, I’m not sure how logical it was to have the Divas Champion lose clean to Beth Phoenix, who isn’t even the #1 heel on SmackDown. Not the ending I would have gone for personally, but it does go to show the extent to which WWE cares about it’s Divas that they never feel the need to ‘protect’ anyone. No doubt, they’ll likely have Melina back and acting like nothing happened on Raw.

Either way, the work was good and I enjoyed it. A solid effort. 3/5

Meh,the match was solid, but it definitely would’ve been better if Kelly hadn’t gotten all that beatdown time.I think it could’ve been better utilized to show her strengths in mat wrestling,or to give Gail and Melina more ring time so that they each got the same amount of time. But still, good match, not exactly my choice for match of the year, though.

I thought divadirt loved michelle mccool. What’s with the dissin’? I thought her entrance with the robe was funny. The way she held the championship up with her head down like that. It was cute.

This match made me realize that Kelly Kelly isn’t actually bad in the ring. She might not be the best with performing moves on other divas, but she can sell moves and take a beating like no other.

My only problem is that I wish they would have played up more of the storyline on smackdown with Beth and Michelle. I thought for sure they were gonna get into a tiff at the end about who REALLY won the match for their team.

After this match we are sure to have a Beth and Michelle Feud just becasue of the blind tags from both Divas. Overall could of been better, its just kind of lame how we could already tell the outcome just because Raw was leading 1-0 with two matches left, but thats the way the cookie crumbles when you only get 3 Raw vs Smackdown matches becasue of The HOUR long Iron Man Match.

Michelle McCool did the best in my opinion( Get ride of the Robe McCool are were going to have a problem) that like the faith breaker(Styles Clash) Belongs to Tna and AJ Styles. Melina did second best for me except for the Scream in the middle of the Ring was that really necessary i think not. Beth getting the pin proves that she will get some sort of push on Smackdown and Feud with McCool for that womens title, thats a match i would pay to see. Natalya reminds me of a dude wrestler she really has no Diva fell to her, i guess thats what we should exspect from the only female wrestler to train at the Hart Dungion( You Go Girl), Gail Kim did okay sucked that the crowd really wasn’t behind her, She needs to turn heel or something (Something please wwe your killing me) and last but not least scratch that not part Kelly Kelly in my opinion got the better end of the ppv she got the loudest chants and cheers from the crowd, and we ask the question why is she still a wrestler? Well we got are answer last night the wwe universe loves that chick and why wouldn’t they look at that pretty face.

I have finally woken up…seeing Beth live (in the 3rd row!) wearing that hot blue number and getting the smashing victory was too much too handle. LOL! In general I thought it was a great match – although I would have enjoyed Mickie being involved (maybe a 4-on-4 with Alicia added to RAW) b/c its fun to hear the crowd pop for her. [Random note - the WWE CRANKED up the music when Orton came out b/c he was getting a LOT of cheers!] Whew…Beth is rolling…Smackdown is a great show…and she might get a crack at the belt soon…life is good. Oh, and she came over to the crowd of people outside the arena before the show and took pics, signed autographs, etc and most people were very impressed at how gracious she was. I must say, she looked great. ;-)

I really enjoyed the match. I thought MOST of the divas did good and all, but I was a bit let down in some aspects of the match. Michelle and Beth were perfect as always. Those two are such good workers and it’s going to be great to see thier upcoming feud on SmackDown! I’m really excited about it and I’m sure that the matches between the two will be amazing. Michelle was the standout star for me. All her moves were executed to perfection as usual with her. Natalya I thought, should have had more time in the ring. She is right on par with the rest of her teamates and I felt she was treated as below everyone else invovled in the match. Such a shame really as she does deserve alot more then that. Beth Phoenix, what can I say? She did everything beautifully as always, and I have to say Blue looks so good on her. Gail, wow how the mighty have fallen. She has become so stale and boring. I can barley remeber what she did in the match. She has no personality what so ever and is just blah to me now. Hard to belive she was a top Knockout and fell to be a easily forgotten diva. Kelly Kelly, wow the crowd was really behind her! She did really well and she really is at her best when she is the underdog, as mentioned. Melina on the other hand was the 2nd worst for me (Behind Gail). I just don’t see how anyone thought the match “Picked Up” when she entered. She did the same moves as she does in every single match of hers and idk if this is just me, but since coming to RAW it looks like she’s lost the spark that made her special. I didn’t see the old Melina. I saw no fire in her during the match whatsoever like I usually see, but maybe that’s just me.

Sorry Beauty Killer but it appears to be “just you.” But don’t worry. You’re not alone in your plight since I too may have the same selective vision as you since I’m not very fond of MICHELLE MCCOOL. Why? Well, it’s because she’s a one trick pony. As a heel she’s just OK. And some people, like me really feel like bagging on her persona not because she is good but primarily because I know that as a face she is nothing. She was merely given a character change because the WWE seems hell bent on protecting their pretty bl(a)nd McCool. I’m sorry, but she is not the next Trish Stratus, and there is no chance that she’ll get better than Trish even if the WWE shoves her all the way down to our throat because the natural talent in women like Beth, Mickie, Melina, Gail Kim, Katie Lea and Nattie is not there. But at least she’s VERY PRETTY.

Oh and by the way. What was that you said? “All her moves were executed to perfection as usual with her.” Lol. Which ones, the knees to the face or the way she crawled towards Natalya. The only physically straining things she did in this match was selling that sucker punch by Melina (which she did well I give you that) and selling that Hurricanrana by Gail Kim (which could not have been sold well had the–what was that you called her?–”stale” Gail failed not to make a clean rotation.)

Sorry, I just don’t see McCool getting where she is without the extreme push from the WWE. But maybe “that’s just me.”

I thought the match was ok had good spot.y’all tripping over the michelle mccool hood think just because aj styles does and now michelle did it once y’all making it a big deal.there is no reason of dissing her for something like that. crying light michelle don’t need to be the next trish Stratus michelle is unique enough to be her own person don’t compared her to other divas for your info trish was not that special. anyway i thought kelly kelly did really good and natalya yeah love how physical she got and the others did wonderful everyone did excellent.

I liked the match. The fact that Smackdown Divas actually got the accolades they deserved? That was a huge plus. I’m a big fan of Melina and Gail but I was rooting for Michelle, Natalya and Beth.

And seriously, does no one notice how whenever Melina gets in the ring it’s extremely hard to look away? She’s great at bringing out the best in her opponent and given the chance I think Gail could do the same.

Now Natalya, I love how un-Diva-like she seems in her wrestling; it just makes her more fun to watch. That and you get the sense she could take on any wrestler (man or woman) in the locker room. Beth was great as usual and Michelle continues to impress me. It annoyed me when the WWE was shoving her down our throats at the beginning but the more I see of her actual wrestling the more I like. That and the fact that she wore that robe just tickles me. I can’t help but think that she’s poking fun at her haters regarding the stealing things from AJ Styles thing.

That’s not what the argument was about JESSICAJ. But whether you can see it or not, Trish and McCool do have a lot of parallels both in terms of style and image and the WWE does have a habit of recycling personas as well as story lines. And since Trish’s character won over a lot of fans, the company seems hell bent on veering toward that same direction albeit a few changes making McCool look more “athletically superior.”

And yes, I agree. Trish is not that special when put side by side with the likes of MsChif, Sara Del Rey and Mariko Yoshida. Technically speaking, Molly Holly is way better than her. But when put side by side with McCool–which you told me not to do BUT I WILL DO ANYWAY BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO STOP ME–McCool pales in comparison. Sorry.

I respect your opinion Crying Light. But I have to be honest with you – I think your being hard on McCool the same way some are being hard on Melina. Like a lot of people, I too was skeptical about McCool. I think the reason behind that was the WWE pushed her too far too soon. A few years ago, she could barely even sell Melina’s Inverted Leg-drop Bull Dog (Primal Scream or whatever it’s called) or put on a decent match but, like the rest of those generic babyfaces in that company, they had her winning matches against excellent in-ring performers like Victoria. That coupled with the rumor the she has political leverage due to the Undertaker caused the ire of serious wrestling fans. Even until now, I’m still not very happy with how well they push her considering that there are more talented Divas in the roster.

However, I think she has improved tremendously. Her moves are much sharper, her executions are cleaner than before and she seems to be developing a character of her own. Of course, her acting needs a lot to be desired but she has that “pompous bitch” act nailed decently, I reckon.

As for the Trish Stratus comment, there are several differences. McCool, I think, is presented to be more domineering compared to Stratus. Plus her style is more brash and she tends to use more power and less grace. It takes advantage of her size whereas Trish’s seems more all-around.

However, there are a lot of similarities especially in the treatment given by WWE to both these women. Trish almost seemed like a sacred cow for the most part of her career. As for McCool, shades of that “sacredness” seem to be surfacing. Of course, it must be said that Trish gained a lot of respect when she allowed herself to be put through a table by 3D. That perhaps was the point wherein the company and serious fans got enamored with her.

But I can’t really say the same for McCool, can I?

    Hmmm…

The Smackdown! divas kicked some ass!!

It’s good to see Natalya is getting more of a push, and did you catch Michael Cole’s “future Women’s Champ no doubt” comment about Natalya.
