SmackDown Redux (October 30th, 2009) – Worst. Costume. Contest. Ever.

Categories: Diva Dirt TV, Friday Night SmackDown, SmackDown Redux

Note: As a result of the ‘Diva Dirt Trade’, the SmackDown Redux is now written by Melanie! Like Mickie James, I have left behind Raw after two years of the Raw Redux but left it in the very capable hands of Erin. You can read Erin’s Raw Redux every Tuesday here at Diva Dirt.

In the words of Comic Book Guy: “Worst. Costume. Contest. Ever.” Much second hand embarassment was felt for the four Divas involved; from the unflattering costume choices [that's you Mickie!] to the ‘white people dancing’ [thanks Michelle!], this one didn’t look too hot.

However earlier in the night, we kicked things off on a much brighter note when the Glamazon, Beth Phoenix made her in-ring debut as a SmackDown Diva in a squash match. This to me was the perfect set-up. Since her debut in 2007 [let's ignore the original debut], Beth has been pushed as the monster heel of the women’s division; the powerful and dominant Glamazon. In the past year, it’s safe to say she’s waned a little as a character as a result of poor booking but all that seems to be changing thanks to the move to SmackDown. Usually with these monster heel types, they’ll have squash matches for weeks on end against the ‘jobber of the week’, we’ve seen it with the likes of The Great Khali, Umaga, Mike Knox and most recently, Sheamus on ECW. I think it’s really intriguing for a Diva to be given similar treatment and really have that time to be put over as a ‘big bad monster’. This almost re-introduces Beth, putting out of mind what she’s been doing on Raw lately, and sort of starting from scratch. So it would Beth Phoenix versus local jobber known as Jenny Brooks, who it’s explained has some history with Beth:

Fresh from defeating Melina to take a win for Team SmackDown at Bragging Rights, Beth gets her first match on SmackDown. We kick off with Beth throwing Jenny to the mat and laying in some kicks & punches and then literally, kicking Brooks out of the ring. That definitely looked impressive.

Beth then drags Brooks back into the ring by her hair and then picks her up for a standing suplex, hoisting Jenny into the air for a good 30 seconds or so. This is something we’ve seen before in Beth’s arsenal and really is a sight to see, so it’s nice to see that it’s dusted off here. Beth then picks up Brooks by the neck and slams her over her knee, before just throwing her into the corner like a rag doll. Jenny then tries to fight back but is thrown against the ropes by Beth and then gets hit with an axehandle across the head. The end is here for the visiting Brooks as Beth sets up an epic looking Glam Slam, once again just holding that position as with the suplex, and as you’ll see she does a 360 on the spot so all the fans in attendance can see her sheer dominance which is a very nice touch, and then slams her down. Beth then takes a moment to adjust herself, looking composed and not in a rush, before pinning Brooks with ease.

I really enjoyed this. Like I said, it almost re-introduces Beth and her dominance with the use of the elongated standing suplex and Glam Slam, using Beth as a spectacle almost. She really came across great here as a non-chalant bad ass heel. The little touches like taking her time before pinning her opponent, while just a small touch, added that much more to atmosphere and I really like that. I hope they can keep this up and continue to have Beth booked strongly & break the mould of what it means to be a Diva today; as mentioned earlier, Diva squash matches are unthinkable but for that to be used as a storyline device for Beth shows some progression. Good segment.

After the cut, the Divas Halloween Costume Contest:

Sadly, after what I thought was a progressive segment for the Divas, it’s pretty much cancelled out by the return of what is essentially, eye candy filler. Cryme Tyme host the SmackDown Divas in a Halloween Costume Contest, reminiscent of the days of Torrie Wilson & Dawn Marie. But this time, we have Layla, Michelle McCool, Mickie James and Natalya:

If the idea was to represent the Divas as a Halloween ‘treat’, they failed. If the idea was to represent the Divas as ~scary~ well congrats, because this was ghastly… for all the wrong reasons. Three out of the four Divas looked ‘blah’ to ‘awful’ and only one really rocked it. Let’s look at each of the Divas:

Natalya almost looked as though she was just in her usual ring gear from the waist down, while wearing a new top. I guess the Divas are told to buy sexy Halloween costumes but there wasn’t anything sexy about this, in fact it was a little boring. Then her little skit acting as a matador while Shad Gaspard ran at her was equally boring. I mean seriously?

Layla, as you may have deduced, was the one out of the four who I thought did the best job. I liked her gimmick as Michael Jackson and of course, we knew she’d have the moves to back it up. Some may complain that Layla always dances but I thought this was a fitting ‘tribute’ if it can even be called that. She looked good [okay the bra was rather skanky but again, they're supposed to look 'sexy'] and her dancing was awesome.

Michelle if I’m honest, gave me second hand embarassment. This was like the epitome of ‘white people dancing‘, it looked really uncomfortable and then after a while, her arms started flailing like she had an epileptic fit. I’m a big fan of Michelle, but this was not her night. The outfit again, was a little too ‘try hard’. Michelle is very athletic and I can just picture her in her sports gear, but trying to be sexy with her butt hanging out in this costume? Not buying it.

Finally we had Mickie James, who didn’t look flattering at all. Mickie, red is not your colour. There’s been a lot of speculation that WWE thought Mickie had put on a lot of weight, I don’t think this was the best costume choice to dispell that speculation. I’m not saying she’s ‘fat’ by any stretch of the imagination, but a tight corset wasn’t exactly a flattering look for her & the garter-like shit around her legs didn’t look too PG-friendly. It looked like bad lingerie with matching boots.

Overall, not a very good segment. Afterwards however, I guess there’s some salvation with the fight that broke out. Mickie with a punch to Nattie, Nattie clotheslines the hell out of Layla — that looked really vicious, and then a Thesz Press by Mickie on Natalya. Michelle interjects with a pretty weak boot [though she was wearing high heeled boots] and a clothesline of sorts. Seems like the end of that segment played into an eventual Michelle vs Mickie match which should be exciting. At least we got some sort of pay-off for having to sit through that.

I could not have agreed more with you!! Beth P. kicked butt while my girl Michelle didn’t quite cut it, sadly(LMAO at the white people dancing bit, BTW). I’ve always known Michelle couldn’t dance, though(Example: “No Mercy 2008″). I think she really tried too hard to look sexy with her outfit & bad dance routines. I know, Michelle’s an athlete not a pro dancer but still, I wasn’t buying it, at all. It all backfired for her, quite badly. :(

This whole segment was terrible & it was just as lame as they described it on Tuesday. :(

LMFAO at Mickie! That “performance” was HILARIOUS!I mean seriously,WTF was that?!!And Michelle seems to have taken a page out of Maria’s book with the whole “Flailing arms like an idiot” thing.Like I said before,Layla would have won in reality, but this is kayfabe, and in kayfabe,Mickie trumps all. :(

Layla was okay and at least Mickies pretty, otherwise she would have been completely crap, and I love Mickie :( .

Michelle looked as if she was trying too hard and Natalya as if she wasnt trying at all.

    Crap contest.

I loved the match, but hated the entire costume contest. Mickie winning was not a suprise, she’s the only face out their. Which really shows they need new divas to debut. Nothing special about smackdown except for Beth vs Jenny Brooks, not even layla’s dancing caught my attention. I was like ” oh layla’s doing that same dance againg, BORED already”.

That Beth match reminded me a lot of her matches in OVW just after she, Shelly & Idol disbanded, I think she had matches with Sosay & Trinity, and in them she got to show off so much character with little touches like the one in this match. Thats the sort of stuff I know Beth is capable of, but didn’t seem to do on Raw too much, whether she was told not to, didn’t want to or because there just wasn’t enough time to put it over in the 5 second tag matches…

I’m so glad Beth is on Smackdown, because it looks like she can finally show what she’s got, Smackdown is defiantly the place to be as a female wrestler, bar the rare (and terrible) costume contest!

Smackdown’s Annual Divas Halloween Costume Contest, The year end feel good crap-tastic event! It’s so campy and horrible that’s it good in a sense, because it’s so outlandish, poorly planned and the costumes are dreadful, I will admit the playful interaction between Nattie and Shad was interesting given their teams respective history with each other, I’m curious to see what an on screen pairing of those two would be like.

Michelle—-just no!…no baby!…bad Michelle, stop it, just stop it okay?!, leave dancing to the pros, i’m only looking out for your safety by telling you this, I’m concerned you may break something.

Mickie looked more like a cheap saloon barmaid out of the old west than Elektra

and as Melony pointed out, Layla was dancing yet again, We get it WWE the woman can move, but would you kindly stop with all that now, allow Layla to showcase another aspect of her personality please!

This is why Mickie James and Michelle McCool should stick solely to wrestling and not any fluffy stuff that’s better tailored to Divas with lesser ability. James, who I love, looked ridiculous here. And Michelle McCool looked stupid.

As per usual, Layla should have won.

Beth was Brilliant, I really enjoyed this Squash match.. usually there rather boring but Beth showed alot of character with her power. Michael Hayes as rumored is a Big fan of Beth and hes apart of the Creative Team on SD.. with him on her side she has a Bright Future on SD and rightfully so.

Costume contest… No comment, i think the contest it’s self ses it all.

But that could also be because Michelle didn’t get a good aim at her. =/

“Beth’s opponent was not Lexxus it was an indy wrestler named She Nay Nay.”

I’m not convinced it’s She Nay Nay. She does kinda look like her though, and it would make sense, She Nay Nay worked with Beth/Katie/Nattie in OVW. But i just watched some recent pictures from her at the NCW Femmes Fatales taping and dont think its her, although i’m not 100% certain.

That’s how you do a squash! Beth looked great, played to her personality, landed her power moves with gusto. Never saw the designated victim before, but she sold very well. Nice job.
As for the costume thing, meh. Only thing that stood out is that Layla is sexy doing anything, and people still don’t give a crap about Michelle. They pop for Natalya accidently clothes lining Layla, and the standard Mickie “Lou Thesz Press” spot, and gave McCool no reaction after the half-assed kick in the head and slow retreat frm the ring, which has been patented by Randy Orton. That was supposed to be the heat spot, folks.
To be fair, though, didn’t like Mickie’s selling of the kick. MJ, you are supposed to be hurt, not stumbling around like a drunk at a frat party.

Loved seeing Beth in a squash match because a woman of her strength and caliber should definitely be portrayed by WWE as just that.
The costumer contest made me cringe so much in parts – I actually felt embarrased for Michelle McCool, women who are so tall and lean like her don’t suit trying to dance in that way because it just doesn’t look right, it looks awkward and gangly.
Layla blew me away, I loved all the MJ moves and the look, that was original and entertaining!

I’m sorry but I can’t stop laughing at how bored and uninterested Natalya looks, I don’t blame her to be honest.

Mickies costume is the fugliest thing I’ve seen in a while, really, my PacMan outfit will look so more flattering than that.

Michelle looked bland, sexy, but bland, and the dancing, OMG McCools dancing is like Barbara Bush rockin’ to Single Ladies, it’s just mind-hurting, at least she showed heel-like personality which is always nice.

Layla looked like a comedic act the whole time, which was good, the costume was a bit odd but the way she danced and acted through the whole segment was nice. The attack by the end didn’t impress me, just gonna say that.

Beth defeating Jenny Brooks was a nice squash match, I missed the strong and powerful Beth Phoenix, the whole package of women wrestling.

That squash match was great. Seems like WWE is really trying to get the fans behind Beth, maybe semi face turn? I hope so because she’d be an awesome tweener.

As for the halloween contest…lame. I think Layla should have won and I could definitely see them making her face as well. I mean seriously, you don’t let a heel be michael jackson because that’s sure to incite a positive response, hell even mickie clapped for her. And she got clotheslined by nattie after all. But who knows.

The Beth squash was fun to watch. I don’t think Brooks got in a single offensive move.

What happened with Mickie and Michelle at the end? There looked to be some sort of edit, but even with it, it still looked awkward.

Hated the match. Hated the costume contest. (other then Layla, who totally pwned)

That match was so stupid. We all know who the glamazon is and having her go against an opponent like that is just stupid. It’s insulting to beth to even insinuate that that other girl had a chance against her. And the other girl didn’t even get ONE shot on the glamazon the whole time.

Smackdown, you totally wasted my time this week. (other than Layla, who totally pwned)

I wanted Vladimir Kozlov or Ezekiel Jackson to come down and glam slam Jenny Brooks after the match ended.

Michelle’s attack on Mickey really did confuse me. I mean the kick and clothesline did look off, but say they hit their mark like they were supposed to, how strong could either be to keep Mickie down? And Ms Electra stumbling around all disoriented like that, it looked as though Michelle was going to go in for a kill and leave Mickie laying but nothing came. Really weirdly done.

I feel that its pretty sad that a girl they hire to job to Beth for one night did better than most women they hire to wrestle every night. They need to get their priorities straight.

When Beth picked her up by the neck I was like “whoa!” – kinda scary! :-) Great squash match – I was pretty upset when she got moved to SD but judging by this past week (and the rumors of Michael Hayes liking her…) this could be a real good move. The best match for SS is Beth vs. Mickie vs. Michelle IMO. Agree with those on the boards…that costume contest was painful to watch. How unoriginal were the costumes?!? Nothing like Michael on “The Office” with his “D*ck in a Box” costume or Jim’s “Facebook”….classic!

That was the point of this match. Beth has been ruined on RAW past year, so the writers on Smackdown are trying to rebuild her credibility as toughest chick on the block. It is not uncommon to see something like that. I grew up watching wrestling before the attitude-era, and basicly every match during FREE tv hours were like this. Sometimes when you were lucky you had jobbers like Barry Horowitch or Iron Mike Sharpe, who were allowed to get a few shots in because they were heels. But the face jobbers were usually always completely squashed. It wasn’t until the ratings-war that squashes became rare.

Beth looked so impressive. This is the Glamazon I want to see, not the one being humiliated by Santino in drag.
