SmackDown Redux (November 6th, 2009) – Glamazon Squash Tour Continues

This week’s SmackDown saw the continuation of the ‘Glamazon Squash Tour’, with Beth Phoenix facing New Jersey local, Brittany Carter. Meanwhile, Layla and Michelle McCool developed a fun new gimmick of sorts, which I liken to the evil stepsisters from Cinderella. Does that make Mickie James, Cinderella? If so, despite scare tactics from McCool & Layla, Mickie shall go to the ball that is Survivor Series in three weeks time. We learned that we’re going to see a good old fashioned elimination match on November 21st with McCool and James as team captains of opposing teams.

Let’s check out all the action, beginning with Beth:

So one week after decimating Jenny Brooks, Beth gets a new toy to play with and from the outset, it’s surely obvious that this one will go the same way as last week’s bout, right? Beth’s opponent is a slighty over-tanned Brittany Carter aka WSU’s Brooke Carter aka Brittney Savage.

The Glamazon gets physical from the outset, hoisting the smaller visitor over her shoulder and driving her into the corner. Welcome to the big leagues! Just in case that wasn’t enough, Beth repeats the same move in the opposing corner and Brittany may wanna stop by the gynae to check her womb is still intact. Beth applies what looks like a Von Erich-esque claw [much more effectively than Lacey, I might add] before backing up at the referee’s request. Beth then hits a a running butt-bump a la former WWE Superstar, Umaga. Hey Brittany, may wanna add a plastic surgeon to that ‘medical to-do list’ for your nose.

Before Carter can get to her feet, she is picked up by Phoenix who then slams her over her knee, not once but twice. The Glamazon then grabs Carter by her hair, seemingly dragging the poor girl around the ring by her roots — no ‘weavedrobe malfunctions’ here unlike TNA. Beth picks up Brittany over her shoulder in a dominator position and spins her around before wrenching her and then dropping her to the canvas like litter. Carter drops face first, adding further insult to that nose.

Phoenix wraps up her tour date this week by picking up Brittany for a Glam Slam, which much like last week is elongated with Beth coming across like a fierce lionness flaunting her prey as she lets the whole audience get a look-see. And again like last week, she takes a moment to compose herself before pinning her opponent.

Following the same simple formula as last week, Beth is made to look strong in a one-sided affair. The danger with this is that I am almost 90% certain Diva fans will begin complaining already about it being predictable. I dare say, some have a shorter attention span than the average fan. WWE, for that reason, perhaps needs to be careful about how much longer they follow this formula before giving Beth a more suitable opponent, i.e. Layla before working up to Michelle McCool and/or Mickie James. The purpose of these squash matches is to re-establish Beth and they are a doing a good job so far of having her come across as a big bad take-no-nonsense heel. The general idea of these squash matches with Superstars like Sheamus and Umaga before him, is to create hype around a Superstar and make them look menacing and make the fans care about that character in that sense. Given that the average fan cares little about the Divas roster, it surprises me then that that same effort is going into Beth; I hope it pays off and the fans begin showing some sort of reaction towards her i.e. deafening boos.

Anyway, follow the cut for the backstage segment:

Backstage, a rather dapper looking Mickie James [minus the Pat Butcher earrings] runs into Layla and Michelle McCool with Layla channeling her inner-Jillian and bursting into song. Loves it! Michelle & Layla then begin cornering Mickie with Michelle carrying the conversation and Layla just passing snide comments. I thought this was a pretty funny segment with Layla & McCool getting their acting on the same page and delivering a fun performance; as I wrote earlier it seemed like the two evil stepsisters from Cinderella and in this case, that is a compliment. Layla did a great job and it wasn’t just Jillian’s singing she was channeling, but her whacky comedy too. I hope we get to see more of Layla & Michelle doing this sort of stuff, she looked like an equal to Michelle as opposed to a subordinate of, that ‘henchmen’ shtick has been done to death and this was different I guess.

I loved everything on SD this week! The Beth match was awesome and I’m looking forward to the next squash match. Layla and Michelle were hilarious, I love them together. :D

    Beth did wonderful…just wonderful

Layla and Michelle were so funny. I loved when Layla sang “Oh Mickie your so Fine”LOL
This is almost like Trish vs Gail & Molly Holly. I cant wait to see what they r gonna do next week.
Im loving this fued Mickie vs Michelle & Layla. Keep it up!.

If I had a pick I would let Natalya pin Mickie next week due to distraction from Layla and Michelle
    that would be nice

Omg. Layla was so freaking great so was Michelle.

Why can’t RAW divas get backstaged segment like this?

Mickie could hardly get a word in. LOL!!

Gotta say, I’m enjoying the Beth Squash Tour….better than seeing her job out to stupid RAW guest hosts. (I don’t think can ever watch Access Hollywood again. LOL)

Liked the backstage segment. Michelle has suddenly transformed and found some charisma. Not liking the Beth Phoenix squashyness though, I think it undermines the current Women’s champion, michelle, who is the top heel on sd

the Beth squash matches are pointless IMO,we all know whats going to happen in all of them so whats the point

the backstage segment was kinda lame

I think Raw divas are better

    November 6, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Beth does certainly look more vicious than ever. I wonder if that’s because she knows she doesn’t have to see random jobette next week?

  • Goodnightddtmnm
    November 6, 2009 at 10:26 pm

Rkoyou-The Beth squash matches arent pointless. The Raw Divas arent better nor are the Smackdown Divas just b cuz on show of divas gets Backstage segments and the the other one dosent. Dosent make one show better. Stop Nagging all the time..thats all u do is Nag..Nag..Nag about Jillian being underrated in which im sure we all here on Diva-Dirt are aware of we are also all aware that u hate Michelle Mccool u dont have to post it on every topic on the website regarding Michelle.SHEESH!!

    November 6, 2009 at 10:43 pm

I agree with Goodnightddtmnm, people are never satisfied jeesh.

Anyway, its funny how these so called “pointless” squash matches are getting Beth face reactions, and im enjoying them (predictable or not). Its better to job out indy talent than to job out actual talent on your show IMO.

The backstage segment was pretty good also.

ugh why do my comments always get bashed on,just because everyone else likes the match, doesn’t mean I have to,i’m hear to voice MY OPINION and if you don’t like it,well thats your problem
,I’m not here to agree with everyone else

    @Goodnightddtmnm-worry about yourself please

    November 6, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Yeah, Beth getting lots of cheers for these squashes. You could even hear the crowd chant 1-2-3 in the end. So they are definately not pointless.

Brittany Carter sure screams a lot, that was kinda annoying.

Britanny carter reminded me of ashley. did anyone else notice the similarity? even their wardrobe was practically the same :)

Does anyone know if they are still planning on pushing Beth as a face? That would be pretty interesting. Although I was sure they were going to pull the trigger on a Hart Dynasty face turn after seeing how they interacted with their team at Bragging Rights. A face Natalya would be awesome. But either way – I’m pretty happy with Smackdown. I just wish they go ahead and turn someone so we can have some awesome Mickie/Natalya, Mickie/Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix/Natalya matches soon. The squashes are impressive but let’s get some feuds boiling. And another face (to add with the addition of a maybe Beth and a lesser-qualified Maria) would be nice.

Mikas-Just be happy it’s not Kelly screaming her head off in there, lol.

RKOyou is right,he doesn’t have to love everything you guys do,I know we had our little spats here in there, but I never blamed him (Or her) for his (Or her) opinion or opinions in the past. And like he said,he’s just here to voice his opinon.

I am LOVING the squash matches so far.It got better this week,so hopefully it’ll get better next week also.I also LOVED the backstage segment,Layla channeling her inner Jillian was HI-larious!Man I love that woman! Here is what I hope will happen at Survivor Series:

    Mickie(captain),Eve,Kelly,Maria,and ?? vs Michelle(captain),Beth,Natalya,Alicia,and Jillian

The Beth squash match was fun again.

Why WWE has Michelle talking and acting so much recently instead of wrestling is beyond me. You’re suppose to hide the wrestlers’ weaknesses and embellish their strengths, but here they are, doing the complete opposite.

  • RKOyou
    November 7, 2009 at 12:21 am

I shouldn’t have said the match was pointless, what I really wanted to say was I wanna see a competitive match, not a squash match because i never liked those

but i am routing for a Beth face turn

  • SophStar-x
    November 7, 2009 at 12:54 am

Im British and God I hate Laylas accent .

Does anyone know if its her natural one or if she forces it a bit?

I think Beths squash matches are good, predictable yes but all squash matches are. Beth looks really great too, I think a face turn would suit her, she has become more smiley these past few weeks so I hope it happens.

  • Erin
    November 7, 2009 at 1:31 am

The segment was alright, but there’s serious acting lessons needed for all. It’s a bit cringe-inducing, even on a wrestling show.

Beth’s push is exciting, but this whole thing’s gonna get predictable pretty fast, unless they find a way to inject some excitement into it.

Layla is the best sidekick ever! LOL! They need to sign Brooke Carter! That girl is an awesome wrestler!!!!

  • Mr.Glamazon
    November 7, 2009 at 1:44 am

Its funny how we all seem to forget that back in the 80’s almost every single match on Sat / Sun TV was a squash match. Now we get 1 on SD each week (at most) and people get irritated. I like seeing any of the superstars look dominant in the ring, makes their big matches feel more important. WWE is doing a decent job building Beth back up to make her upcoming matches with Mickie, Michelle, whoever more exciting.

Interesting post on another site (I think LordsofPain) regarding Melina vs. Fox overseas…apparently Melina was horrible, tons of in-ring mistakes. Weird – is she slipping this badly???

  • Dameon333

i lol’d when mickie called layla scary spice

  • theregoeskitty
    November 7, 2009 at 2:44 am

its nice that beth is getting some wins
however these indy divas havent eaven got a hit on her
and its kinda boring when something is completely one sided
so if this is going to continue i think the woman should atleast put up some sort of fight

  • TrishMelinaFan
    November 7, 2009 at 3:18 am

Mr.Glamazon-Oh no!Are you serious? Are you sure they weren’t just saying that because they’re not women’s wrestling fans??!!!

  • ciaraciara
    November 7, 2009 at 4:40 am

MarBu13 i think a face turn for beth is in the works she is gonna have to eventually turn to face michelle a heel ve heel match is just bland even if beth turns face to face michelle and turns back heel it works .

  • Mr.Glamazon
    November 7, 2009 at 5:48 am

TrishMelina – you may be right that the report was coming from a person who doesn’t like the Divas, but I don’t think that was case…the person was just reporting the WWE overseas results and matter-of-factly said the Alicia – Melina match was not well done and the crowd wasn’t into it. Hmmm. I guess we take all these reports with a grain of salt.

What’s been longer, weeks Maryse has been out or weeks Cryme Tyme has faced Hart Dynasty?

  • Mr.Glamazon
    November 7, 2009 at 8:07 am

Feels like Cryme Tyme has been fighting the original Hart Foundation at this point…good lord does the WWE need some more tag teams!

  • Mikas
    November 7, 2009 at 10:03 am

    Houseshow results from europe:

    #1 Contender’s Battle Royal:
Mickie James beat Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Layla, Rosa Mendes & Katie Lea Burchill

    WWE Women’s Championship Match:
Michelle McCool (c) beat Mickie James

So I don’t think we will see a Michelle-Beth match yet, they will probably first do a Michelle-Mickie feud while they rebuild Beth with the squash matches.

  • mr_socko
    November 7, 2009 at 10:32 am

Beth wont be turning face. She’ll continue with the squash matches for a couple more weeks, until one of her opponents is Serena. Serena will cause a shock by beating, or nearly beating Beth (much like taylor wilde did to awesome kong). Serena will then come up to the roster full time as a face and have a bit of a beth feud. That’s my theory :P

  • vonVile
    November 7, 2009 at 11:04 am

I agree with RKOyou. Beth’s squash matches are nowhere close to interesting as Awesome Kong’s were. With Kong I could believe opponents couldn’t get an offense started on her for her shear size. Seeing Beth, who is about half Kong’s size, do the same thing just isn’t as believable for me.

Also after Beth’s first move the women were like deer caught in the head lights. The first wrestler, Jenny Brooks, became a dead fish and Brittany Carter’s repeated screaming in terror throughout the match became comical. If the WWE isn’t going to raise the competition for Beth before Serena appears they might as well have her go up against rag dolls.

    November 7, 2009 at 11:53 am

I am really enjoying the beth squash matches i just hope they dont go on to long beth is better than that she deserves more i dont no why they cant do a triple threat between michelle beth and mickie for the title i get sick of all these 1 on 1 matches all the time and the maych should be great because they can all work just a sugestion i think it would be good instead of the same old stuff all the time

  • xmelissaa
    November 7, 2009 at 11:58 am

Someone else on another post said this would be a great way to bring up a development diva, and have them get an upset victory. I’d love to see this happen with Serena, and have her actually give Beth some competition. This works out for everyone… Mickie & Michelle could feud, Beth would still be kept in the picture, and there’d be a new (much needed) face on SD.

Loved the backstage segment… Scary Spice :)

I only just realised Mr Socko put the exact same thing. Haha.

  • mr_socko
    November 7, 2009 at 1:48 pm

The commentators always go on about how Beth is so dominant and like a force that has never been seen in the WWE. But Chyna would’ve DESTROYED beth ;)

  • redsoul
    November 7, 2009 at 3:01 pm

like Michelle and Layla are targetting Mickie,i think that it woill be a match between Layla and Mickie(with McCool at ringside) with Mickie being beated down by both and Beth coming up suprisly to save her;or a tag match that was supposed to be an handicap match but Beth is announced as Mickie´s suprise partner.
i´m even hoping to see Beth in Team James at SS.

  • redsoul
    November 7, 2009 at 3:03 pm

having Beth,Mickie and a future Serena as faces while McCool,Layla and a more inring Natalya would be the heels.i think the roster would be good in this way.

  • Jim Molloy
    November 7, 2009 at 5:04 pm

I LIKE BETH, BUT WHY WASTE HER TALENT ON LOCAL TALENT. SHE SHOULD WRESTLE WWE DIVAS. I AM LOSING INTEREST IN SMACKDOWN & RAW.

  • RKOyou
    November 7, 2009 at 6:30 pm

i don’t think serena will be called up,she just signed with WWE about 3 months ago and thats nothing,FCW talent can stay in development for 2 years almost,i don’t if this applys to divas also but still, she hasn’t paid her dues in development, she has to stay in FCW for almost a year for them to even consider calling her up but I could be wrong

I think calling up april lee would be a better choice

  • SereneAndTranquil
    November 7, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Beating up jobbers doesn’t make you look tough. If Beth were beating official Divas then maybe her build up would be more credible. And that segment was so cool. Michelle is really improving her acting skills.
