Friday the 13th may be considered an ‘unlucky’ day but mark the date in your diaries folks, because this Friday the 13th brings good luck to the Divas and their fans alike. On paper, Mickie James vs Natalya is a dream match waiting to happen and this week, the dream match became a reality…

Just moments prior to this match, we see Layla approach Mickie backstage in another badly-acted backstage segment. While Layla distracts Mickie, this allows Michelle McCool to sneak into Mickie’s lockerroom because otherwise that close-up of Mickie’s dressing room door will have been for nothing. Mickie once again calls Layla ‘Scary Spice’ in a lame attempt at humour. Note to WWE: It’s not going to catch on.

Anyway, with the rising tension set, it’s time for all to boil over, in where else, but the ring. Mickie gets a full entrance while Natalya has to make do with a Beth-jobber-sized ‘announcement’. Rude.

Easily two of the best wrestlers on the Divas roster, we finally get to the wrestling bit as the bell rings and Natalya takes down Mickie by her legs and then begins slapping her around the head. Nothing pretty about Natalya’s style, as has been much noted, but it’s fun to watch and breaks from the Diva norm. Natalya then gets to her feet and looks rather like ODB as she taunts her opponent. She goes for a clothesline but Mickie counters into a snapmare and a beautiful low dropkick which stuns the powerhouse third-gen Diva. Natalya scatters from the ring in true heel fashion crying, “You back her up!”

Mickie, taking no nonsense, goes for a baseball slide but Natalya moves out of the way and shoves Mickie into the steel steps. When was the last time the steps came into play in a Divas match? And no, Melina tripping on them doesn’t count. This was a nice display of physicality from Natalya, it’s rare to see the harsh steel steps used in Divas matches but it fits with Natalya’s rough-house style. Mickie sells the spot well as Nattie takes the lead and throws Mickie back in the ring and capitalises on hurting Mickie with a quick pin fall.

Natalya grabs Mickie by the hair and slams her straight back onto the mat, before locking Mickie into her patented surfboard submission move. With Natalya’s shoulders down, the referee begins the three-count in Mickie’s favour but Nattie breaks the hold, causing her to fall smack-flat on her face. Great spot here.

The Hart Dynasty Diva follows up with forearms and stomps Mickie in the corner with no relent. In a very nice Melina-esque spot, Natalya attempts to force Mickie out of the corner by her legs, Mickie holds onto the ropes with her arms and ends up jumping to her feet and comes at her with forearms. Natalya then comes back with a forearm of her own, then shoves Mickie into aforementioned corner and lays in knee strikes to Mickie’s body. Mickie manages to hit her patented hurricanrana from the corner and then gains momentum with clotheslines, Natalya then comes back and somehow Mickie ends up jumping through the bottom rope. O… kay…

Natalya runs at Mickie on the apron, Mickie with a shoulder block and goes up top, the two Divas then trade blows. All of a sudden we cut to Layla and McCool coming down to the ring with a few choice garments from Mickie’s lockerroom. In the ring, Mickie hits a Thesz Press from the top and goes for a cover but Natalya kicks out. Mickie becomes distracted by Layla & Michelle, who [wearing gloves, by the way] cut into Mickie’s purple wrestling top.

In the ring, Natalya takes advantage with a clothesline from behind and locks in her finisher, the Sharpshooter and Mickie eventually taps out. Meanwhile, Layla & Michelle are now cutting into Mickie’s pants. Mickie, who seems to be emotionally invested in her clothes, is visibly in tears. I know clothes can hold a sentimental value but this just came across silly. Wouldn’t you expect her to jump out of the ring and chase them? Not watch on in a flood of tears like they’ve run over her cat.

The match itself was very solid and featured great work from both Divas; it was hard hitting, it was at times rough and thoroughly enjoyable. It’s a shame that the fans in attendance weren’t more into it, which is unusual for UK crowds who pretty much cheer the whole show. The commentary also, was rather bland and monotonous for the most part and added little to the match. Perhaps those two factors could have helped a little more but other than that, I thought this was a great match and both Divas did a great job. I can’t help but feel that with more time and perhaps a little less restriction, it could’ve been even better. This came across as just 25% of what they can do and hopefully one day we’ll see them go all out.

Next up, the Glamazon Squash Tour stops by Britain:

Beth Phoenix has been the focus of a remake if you will. Hopefully not a crappy remake like the new ‘Fame’ but a proper good remake like err… yeah, maybe not the best analogy. Anyway, Beth’s Squash Tour stopped by Sheffield where she was met with a young lady named Lisa Taylor, who unlike her opponents in previous weeks, seemed to have a little more meat on her bones and seemed to match Beth physique-wise:

A confident young thing, isn’t she? Taylor goes for a rollup straight away on the Glamazon, who unflinchingly doesn’t seem to be moving one bit. Instead she grabs Taylor by the hair and grabs her in a headlock and hits her with an elbow to the head. This is then followed by clubbing blows with her forearm across the top of Lisa’s head. And by now, she’s probably seeing those cartoon birds around her head.

Beth then picks up Taylor in a powerslam position and drives her shoulder into her knee. She then runs at the turnbuckle, Lisa in tow, hanging her up in the tree of woe. The unrelenting Glamazon sets up a devastating neckbreaker which is delivered greatly enough to make the viewer feel uneasy. And with that it’s safe to say Taylor’s brush with fame has come to a halt as Beth hits her with another of her stalling Glam Slams, flaunting her prey for all to see, before hitting the move.

Another squash match for Beth, who in just over a week, is guaranteed to see some better competition at the Survivor Series. With three weeks of these matches now and a pay per view to build for, you’ve got to give Beth something a little more substantial to do next week that could bring her into the main fold of Divas action. However, my gut tells me they’ll probably have another squash match next week, then the pay per view and after that, maybe then we’ll see some development.

i was right =) it was Lisa Fury.

    http://www.glorywrestling.com/gg/LisaFury/LF.asp

that should be someone the WWE should sign. shes goodlooking. 3rd generation wrestler. former model. and now is a wrestler, but I dont think shes Natalya 3rd Generation material but shes not Lacey 3rd Generation material either. She could pull off a good match.

The best part of Smackdown to me had to be the Michelle and Layla parts. I’m lovin The Duo!!!

    Go Team Mayla!!!

Haha. I didn’t notice she was wearing gloves when I watched it. That’s kinda random. I was surprised that Natalya didn’t get to make an entrance. I’m really not a Natalya fan, but it’s obvious that WWE doesn’t treat her right.

Honestly, when the crowd isn’t into the matches, it makes them UNBEARABLE to watch. And I don’t know what was up with the commentary. I think it was the pairing. Those two didn’t seem to be very in sync.

By the way…what’s with the nicknames? lol. MJ and M.C. Cool? Are the divas using this to boost their rap star careers?

I’d say Natalya did get an entrance, but we just didn’t get to see it due to time restraints. Would of been nice to seen what reaction she got though.. I liked the match, one of Mickie’s better works so far this year. I’m still wanting to see a rematch between McCool & Natalya though as I really liked their work from before.

I gotta agree that the Beth squash matches are starting to run their course, but I kinda get the feeling this is gonna be used to bring in a new babyface in a Santino fashion.. “Unknown” beats the monster and gets a spot on the roster.. Serena maybe?..

Just another reason to hate michelle,I can’t stand her.I feel bad for mickie, michelle and layla cut up her best ring attire IMO:(

the natayla/mickie match wad good but the crowd killed it for me,i could hear the crickets. Natayla is going to do a great job representing the next generation of divas along with alicia, serena, april, savannah, eve, and a couple of others, she could be pushed as the next beth phoenix

I hope this Beth thing goes somewhere, most likely a push to the womens title against michelle

i hate how the announcer calls beth as “the glamazon, beth phoenix” instead of “beth phoenix… the glamazon!”

I Loved the Match!! Smackdown was just the boost Mickie James needed! :) And Natalya looked AMAZING in the match! Actually both of them did. Mickies best match this year and deffinetlly one of Natalya’s best matches ever.

I’m loveing the Monster Beth Tour. I think it’s making Beth look Epically Dangerous and like others have said I could see them pulling Serena or even Angela/Savannah up to the Smackdown rooster through these macthes.

Overall Smackdown Divas (Again) trounce the Raw ones.

Mickie James vs Natalya match was boring to me. But Layla and Michelle was funny once again.

as much as i appreciate the smackdown diva backstage segments (i mean, when did raw last have one?) they could really do with a lot more acting classes, i find it almost embarrassing to watch.

nice to see beth dominating still.. not sure where they’re going with this though.. mickie seems next for the belt, and a face turn for beth seems more unlikely as time goes by (she had the perfect chance back at wrestlemania time).

    Two things:
Beth have been on WWE for 3 years..apperantly WWE thinks that the fans dont know of what she is capable of.

The diva Segment was lame but at least they are taking time to built it and not just put them in the ring. Nothing like RAW!

Take a long hard look at what putting a fair amount of decent performers on one show creates. Loving Smackdown right now, if only they could do the same for RAW.

The Mickie-Natalya match was awesome! And I still love Beth’s squash matches, especially this one.The only thing I hate is how dead the crowd was for both matches,
    I mean,really!

    Thomas, I totally agree.

Was that not just the deadest crowd ever? I expected much more from my countrymen.

That’s my least favorite Beth Phoenix outfit yet. It makes her look bulky and weird. But I love how she is smiling more. I still think she looks demented when she does smile, but she’s still a beautiful woman.

xxChristinaxx I agree with you the match was boring. This wasn’t Mickie’s best match and I thought neither brought a whole lot to the table as far as in ring work. JMO

The crowd reaction in that Mickie-Natalya match is just as bad for the Divas as a lack of storylines. Good wrestling usually gets over, but the crowd just refuses to react to any Diva once the match starts, except for Kelly Kelly sometimes. They die during Mickie matches even though they react to her entrance.

Anyone notice Beth is winning each squash match faster than she did the previous week?

the main thing to me thats missing from mickie theese days is the fact she never amps up the crowd anymoree. she just doesnt show all the passion she did in the ring about a year agoo.

I enjoyed the Mickie vs Natalya match, but the crowd was pretty dead most of the time. It was nice to see Natalya use her Sharpshooter again.

Was I the only one who didn’t really enjoy the Michelle and Layla cutting up Mickie’s clothes part?? That was pretty lame IMO. It could have been way better than it was. Hope Mickie gets her revenge (insert evil laugh).

NOOOOOOOO LAYLA MICHELLE WHY THAT WAS THE BEST OUTFIT MICKIE HAD LMAO. I think the natayla and mickie match was pretty solid its obvious they can do way more. And I’M still liking the squash matches i think we all know where this is gonna end up unless wwe pulls a fast one on us lol.

It was nice to see two Diva spots tonight…and I loved Natayla’s sharpshooter…that was pretty cool. My wife doesn’t usually watch, but during the match she asked why nobody was cheering. Hmmm. Definitely detracts from the excitement.

Still loving the Beth segments, but they better lead to a women’s title and not some unknown beating her….that would cause me to pour a stiff drink! :-)

    Survivor Series should be good!!

The video of Mickie vs. Natalya doesn’t have Mickie’s cartwheel reversal in the beginning. O_o I guess the station edited it out for whatever reason, but it aired over here (Canada). The match was great, I just hate dead crowds it sort of downplays everything. :\ I hope next week we get something different with Beth for a change, I’m kinda over the squash matches now lol they’ve run their course. I’d like to see her turn face and kick Michelle’s ass pls, but I’m thinking that will happen at Survivor Series. Loved SD this week overall

I liked the Mickie vs Natalya match, I though those girls would have a longer one but yet is almost doubling the Raw ones, even well, the end wasn’t something I’d choose since Natalya “maybe” could win without a distraction and she was pretty much just put there to make the story fit but I hated Layla & McCool destroying Mickie’s best attire in ages, I’m hoping this makes her get a new one but well, it wouldn’t be heelish at all if they had chose to cut the old ones that we’re so over-tired to see, which I’m disposed to do by myself if I get the chance…

Uhm, I don’t like their concept of faces being weak to portray a “face personality”, specially on the women’s division, I mean, Mickie could chop Layla & McCool but instead of that she just stays there crying, what is goin’ to be next?? the evil girls locking Mickie in a room to avoid her performing in a PPV and Mae Young acting like a fairy??

I liked more the sorta agressive (or at least defenssive) face character for a short time Melina developed when being attacked by McCool.

The squash match thing is great, I think that I’m starting to become a Beth Phoenix’s fan but I just really really hope something face, I mean good results of all that. I have the impression that the audience was so-flat during most of the matchs, even when Rey and Batista came out they looked to me like zombies…

  • dan333
    November 14, 2009 at 11:48 am

The match was nothing special IMO. Nothing really stood out, that or the crowd’s deadness really sucked the life out of the match. Had I been there I would have been cherring my ass off seeing these two wrestle as they are my favourite sd divas and IMO the hottest.

Damn, I really wanted to shut Michelle’s mouth. It was awful, she had it up so wide you could fit a submarine in it. I know she was TRYING to act but please that is pathetic. I think this is going to lead Katie Lea to come to SD and turn face so that Mickie will have someone to combat the two on one efforts of Michelle & Layla. So please WWE don’t bring Maria back… well ever.

To be honest I’m getting bored of the Beth squashes already. Why dosen’t she add a promo or contest. Plant a wrestler in the crowd and do a contract chance match in which the woman that beats her gets a WWE Contract. Get some of the girls from FCW and have them face Beth. See who deserves to be brought to the main roster

i loved mickie vs natalya, IMO mccool & layla did her a favor i never liked the purple & black attire, beths new attire was nice, and at leaste the match featured different moves unlike the last squash matches that felt like every move was copyed & pasted

I was pretty upset at the clothes-cutting seeing as in my opinion, that was one of Mickie’s better attires! GODDAMN YOU MICHELLE AND LAYLA!
Of course, I am only joking.
Liked the Natalya/Mickie match. Shame it was ruined by Michelle and Layla putting on the whole ‘Mean Girls’ act.

It was alright this week. I was glad to see Mickie vs Natalya but I wanted the match to go on just a little bit longer.
I mean really, Mickie cried?? This isn’t the sassy Mickie I’m used to, come on creative lets get it together!
Something I noticed about the outfit thing, wasn’t Mickie talking to the seamstress lady last week…maybe it was about a new outfit? LOL @ Layla’s stinky face with Mickie’s boots.
Beth was brutal this week, that neckbreaker made me go ouch.
