SmackDown Redux (November 20th, 2009): We’re Not in High School Anymore

This week’s edition of SmackDown moves away from the juvenile high school pranks of last week and if it’s even possible, regresses to kindergarten, sandbox-esque bullshit. I don’t enjoy seeing any Diva berated and being called ‘Piggy James’, whether it’s ‘acting’ or not. We all know that unlike real scripted television shows, there’s a fine line between reality and constructed television when it comes to WWE.

But before we get into dissecting that, prior to the skit we saw a Divas match between Mickie James and Layla:

For the second time in the past month, we get Mickie vs Layla and already, I get the sense we’re going to be seeing this match at least a couple more times as with the Melina-Layla series. Layla, who this week was sporting a questionable new outfit, has shown much progression in the ring in recent months. Her work with Melina was superb and while I didn’t necessarily feel the chemistry in her match with Mickie a few weeks back, it was an okay match. Mickie is a Diva that either has chemistry with someone or she doesn’t, it doesn’t seem as though she can adapt to that person. I would say she works better with Layla than she does with some ring veterans but it still doesn’t measure up to Layla’s earlier matches with Melina.

Anyway, we kick off with the Layla pointing a finger in Mickie’s direction but the former Women’s Champion fights back with forearms and throws Layla into the ropes for a Thesz Press. In the corner, Mickie begins stomping at Layla seeking retribution for the clothes-cutting incident last week but the referee tries to back her off. Layla kicks Mickie straight in the knee which takes her off her feet. Layla then clubs at Mickie’s head and hits a rather nice low dropkick on her. Mickie begins to fight back, jumps over Layla in the corner and rolls up her up with a bridge for a quick win.

Hardly a competitive match, far too short to be anything substantial. Layla, as always, shows some ring prowess and an aggression that helps her mask the fact that she’s still a rookie in the ring. Being confident and assertive in the ring can go a long way to cover your flaws. Honestly, not much to say about this match beyond that.

Layla gets on the microphone and diverts Mickie’s attention to the screen where Women’s Champion, Michelle McCool sings “Old MacDonald,” calling Mickie ‘Piggy James’. As I wrote earlier, this was incredibly tasteless and if you think about it in terms of storyline, it’s hardly an exciting route to go. Fat jokes, clothes cutting… it’s all very ‘Mean Girls’ and not what you’d expect from grown women. Hardly realistic. You’d think that Michelle McCool, who is often billed as being a former school teacher and a graduate, would be a little more advanced in her taunting of Mickie. This just comes across as WWE stereotyping woman-on-woman hate as having to be about weight etc. and it’s ridiculous. If children are your target audience, then congratulations — but this was just stupid to everyone above the age of 10.

No doubt this segment will be yet another illogical reason to hate Michelle for some, but rather than waste my time explaining that it’s scripted, I’ll just say how sorry I feel for those of you.

With the Survivor Series on Sunday, what exactly does it say about Mickie James as a team captain given the fact she’s been reduced to tears by McCool two weeks in a row now? It seems to suggest to me that the wrestling is unnecessary despite being a wrestling show — why beat the girl up when you can just cut her clothes and reduce her to tears? Flawed logic.

I don’t quite see how this pushes the agenda for the Divas match on Sunday, it seems to be more of a self-contained build for next week’s SmackDown rather than a build towards the pay per view. A waste of a show if you ask me.

XDDDD You peeps are officially making my night!
Lulz, I love everyone here being all like “OMG WTF WHY IS WWE SO CRUEL OMG OMG OMG AHHHH GO TO TNA MICKIE PLZ GO TO TNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Srsly everyone, it’s a storyline, even if they are poking fun at Mickie, still it’s a storyline. Like really, you people take this shit so seriously, it makes me laugh :)

As for what I thought, the segment was great! Mickie is doing sum fine ass acting there, she really looked like she was hurt by the piece. Even if that thing was immature and stereotypically mean girl, it still made me laugh…
Round of applause to creative, at least they are finally giving a crap enough about one diva division to give it a storyline with an actual back-story!

LOL @ all the soap box preaching.. Get over it.. Mickie could honestly care less what this site, the editors, or posters think abot her weight.. She is sitting there collecting money that none of us probably will never see while you all cry over a storyline that has finally come to the Divas.. Makes me wonder how old some of you are, or how serious you really take this.. Don’t the TBP hurl far worse insults at their fellow Knockouts?.. Oh wait, that’s TNA and they are PG-13 so it’s allowed there I guess.. Give me a break. LOL

I really do enjoy Michelle & Layla as they are both becoming the type you love to hate. I highly doubt that Michelle’s team will win this Sunday after they got the last laugh on SmackDown, but hopefully this continues; it’s refreshing.

This storyline is weak. That is the real issue here. While the men mostly feud about more serious matters, the WWE “creative” team are having the women squabble over petty reasons like this. It was somewhat smirk-worthy to a very diminutive degree but overall, it was childish, pathetic and dare I say, insulting.

The WWE is supposed to be the biggest pro-wrestling promotion in the world. In that sense, they are tied to the identity of this form of entertainment and whether you like it or not, they have the responsibility of representing its milieu. What a shame that this is the way this “number one” company views women.

But really, how can we blame them when we have infantile viewers enjoying this something this stupid. They are, after all, what fuels the machine. =)

Mizchick, no I will not like Mickie if she lost a few pounds. I used to love her when she first debuted in WWE, but I feel like in my eyes she lost her sparkle. I give her credit for being an astounding performer and being able to hold the Divas and Woman’s belt in her career, but with how WWE uses her on television doesn’t make me want to like her anymore. So no I wont like her if she lost weight. Her fire has been put out in my eyes.

Lol I won’t say what I got to say on Mickie James anymore. You Mickie stans are delusional. I’ll let you guys have your moment. Send WWE letters of outrage! Stay Classy Mickie fans

I think Mickie’s inaction is an indication that they are building up to something really big. And such a thing like what happened wouldn’t bother me at all if I was a 100% sure that it didn’t have grains of truth in it. WWE is known for it, so that’s all that bothers me. And taking it as a storyline, it’s immature but it does give more attention to the Divas, but my worry is the “fans” who are so easily swayed by stuff like that as to start taking up the charge of chanting “Piggy James” and bringing signs making fun of her weight. Because not everybody likes Mickie James, and like somebody said, some people just love to hate; they pick something and go with it. It would suck to end one’s career on an anticlimax/”stigma” like that. It’s the “fans” reaction I don’t trust. Mickie’ll bounce back, I’m sure! And if anything, when people mention eating disorders, I think about the girls who decide to stop watching WWE RIGHT AFTER something like what happens and don’t wait around to see the conclusion/revenge/comeback, leaving w/a sour taste in their mouths.

After the comments you made earlier, you are in no position to tell others to stay classy, Armando.

Melanie, I agree with your analysis 100%. What in hell is going on with the writers at WWE. That segment with Mickey James on national television was disgusting. Competative matches only is what they need to market. I hope that they do not screw up the return of Maryse. I think that TNA allows their Divas to have competative matches without the side bar trivia. I have always been a loyal fan, but it is time to get back to competative wrestling. The writers are coming across as real amateurs.

If Mickie James was officially hurt she should ‘no show’ at Survivor Series. When the WWE calls her up she can claim that she was too fat to get through her hotel door that morning.

People, it’s obvious that ARMANDO is merely trying to get our attention. Seriously. His statements for one are poorly founded, he obviously needs to learn how to use a dictionary as showcased in comment 54 among others and his responses are merely childish retorts that are of no consequence. Let’s move on. He may not have noticed but his previous statements just proves how poor his logic is. Besides, I don’t think there is anything he can say that can redeem himself from such stupidity. =) I love it when people shoot themselves on the feet.

What made the segment worse (or funniest) is that as Mickie’s walking up the the ramp in tears, the camera follows her, trying to get the crowd to sympathize. All of a sudden…….cut to Rey Mysterio backstage, and the crowd erupts in cheer. Totally brushing off the emotional Mickie segment. Props to Mickie for crying on cue though.

I love how all of you are saying how stupid my comments were and how stupid I made myself look, but all of you are stupid for still taking the time to reply to my comments. I obviously hit a nerve with all you Mickie fans. I love this website and it’s members. Don’t change Diva-Dirt.

Ridiculous and cruel…. FYI I feel sure those tears were not scripted as those words were real and stabbing. Disgusting

OMG, you are all stupid. Of course it was scripted! JESUS CHRIST! For someone that’s been following wrestling for less than 5 years, I can still remember that wrestling is FAKE! How can people be so stupid? Obviously they told Mickie this would happen, storyline-wise. And why does everyone jump on the idea that pig means fat. We call people pigs when they are sloppy and disgusting. Why must pig mean fat?
