This week’s edition of SmackDown moves away from the juvenile high school pranks of last week and if it’s even possible, regresses to kindergarten, sandbox-esque bullshit. I don’t enjoy seeing any Diva berated and being called ‘Piggy James’, whether it’s ‘acting’ or not. We all know that unlike real scripted television shows, there’s a fine line between reality and constructed television when it comes to WWE.
But before we get into dissecting that, prior to the skit we saw a Divas match between Mickie James and Layla:
For the second time in the past month, we get Mickie vs Layla and already, I get the sense we’re going to be seeing this match at least a couple more times as with the Melina-Layla series. Layla, who this week was sporting a questionable new outfit, has shown much progression in the ring in recent months. Her work with Melina was superb and while I didn’t necessarily feel the chemistry in her match with Mickie a few weeks back, it was an okay match. Mickie is a Diva that either has chemistry with someone or she doesn’t, it doesn’t seem as though she can adapt to that person. I would say she works better with Layla than she does with some ring veterans but it still doesn’t measure up to Layla’s earlier matches with Melina.
Anyway, we kick off with the Layla pointing a finger in Mickie’s direction but the former Women’s Champion fights back with forearms and throws Layla into the ropes for a Thesz Press. In the corner, Mickie begins stomping at Layla seeking retribution for the clothes-cutting incident last week but the referee tries to back her off. Layla kicks Mickie straight in the knee which takes her off her feet. Layla then clubs at Mickie’s head and hits a rather nice low dropkick on her. Mickie begins to fight back, jumps over Layla in the corner and rolls up her up with a bridge for a quick win.
Hardly a competitive match, far too short to be anything substantial. Layla, as always, shows some ring prowess and an aggression that helps her mask the fact that she’s still a rookie in the ring. Being confident and assertive in the ring can go a long way to cover your flaws. Honestly, not much to say about this match beyond that.
Layla gets on the microphone and diverts Mickie’s attention to the screen where Women’s Champion, Michelle McCool sings “Old MacDonald,” calling Mickie ‘Piggy James’. As I wrote earlier, this was incredibly tasteless and if you think about it in terms of storyline, it’s hardly an exciting route to go. Fat jokes, clothes cutting… it’s all very ‘Mean Girls’ and not what you’d expect from grown women. Hardly realistic. You’d think that Michelle McCool, who is often billed as being a former school teacher and a graduate, would be a little more advanced in her taunting of Mickie. This just comes across as WWE stereotyping woman-on-woman hate as having to be about weight etc. and it’s ridiculous. If children are your target audience, then congratulations — but this was just stupid to everyone above the age of 10.
No doubt this segment will be yet another illogical reason to hate Michelle for some, but rather than waste my time explaining that it’s scripted, I’ll just say how sorry I feel for those of you.
With the Survivor Series on Sunday, what exactly does it say about Mickie James as a team captain given the fact she’s been reduced to tears by McCool two weeks in a row now? It seems to suggest to me that the wrestling is unnecessary despite being a wrestling show — why beat the girl up when you can just cut her clothes and reduce her to tears? Flawed logic.
I don’t quite see how this pushes the agenda for the Divas match on Sunday, it seems to be more of a self-contained build for next week’s SmackDown rather than a build towards the pay per view. A waste of a show if you ask me.
November 20, 2009 at 5:28 pm
The audience was definitely NOT cheering for Michelle McCool. The calls of “We Love you Mickie” show that while the WWE may think Mickie’s Fat the audience certainly doesn’t.
November 20, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I hope them making fun of Mickie’s weight doesn’t go the way of what happened w/Molly Holly. Well, I guess it wouldn’t, seeing as she’s a fan fav. But I also wonder what direction it’s going to take.
November 20, 2009 at 5:40 pm
The match bored me so lets not talk about that. I had a feeling McCool was going to be bad on this SD … and I was right, her singing IS like nails on a chalkboard. XD Is much as I find the whole ‘Piggy Mickie’ and hr ‘weight issues’ appauling, Ilol’d at the ‘Thats All Folks’ bit, but that was mostly could I looked away an imagined the real Porky Pig, I didn’t look at that, it was too painful for me to watch. =(
But onto something possitive, did you see her crying? REAL TEARS?! =O She is one damn good actress I’ll give her that, and thats one of the COUNTLESS reason why I will NEVER dislike or hate Mickie James, NEVER EVER! And like mulpitple people in the crowd shouted after that, ‘WE LOVE YOU MICKIE!’ =’)
November 20, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Yeah Michelle’s singing abilities are bad (lets just hope she doesn’t sing like this in real life or poor Mark xD).
I don’t have a problem with the fat jokes, but yes, I agree that this was rather childish for a wrestling show, not to mention the fact that it was already done quite a few times.
November 20, 2009 at 5:47 pm
P.S. Yeah, I just watched it and that video at the end was too much, and considering how people have been let out of their contracts in the past for the WWE telling them to lose weight, I wouldn’t be surprised if this had a whole lot to do with reality. It was difficult to see, and really messed up. Mickie James isn’t fat, WWE!
November 20, 2009 at 5:48 pm
I can understand the intent behind this and last week’s McStunts by: to play on Mickie’s emotion and vulnerability through mind games enough to effectively run her out of Smackdown. I actually like this story in principle. But it’s the execution that has me scratching my head. This week was more childish than last week, yet it effected Mickie more to the point of tears? Moreover, if you guys remember, Katie Lea insulted Mickie’s class as a women’s champion by claiming she only slept around to get that title. That was an attack on BOTH her professional and personal integrity. What was Mickie’s response it? A simple, “Whatever.” If that didn’t bother her, why would she care about being called a pig? She can’t be fat to do her line of work, she knows this, they both do. Perhaps if Michelle attacked other parts of her life, possibly family issues, THEN this would make more sense.
November 20, 2009 at 5:51 pm
i’m more worried about things behind the scenes than the actual segment itself (however degrading i find it). just a couple weeks ago, mickie was booked strong, winning and standing up to the makeshift facton of mccool/layla, now she’s reduced to tears over something that superficial? i would’ve much preferred a beatdown from mccool instead. maybe next week they could’ve had james facing a random jobber with another beatdown by both layla and mccool only for beth to make the save. hmm, if they don’t turn beth at survivor series, they likely never will. maybe they’re just trying to delay this feud of sorts until maria comes back to “save” mickie? ugh.
November 20, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Wow, say what you will about that short match but its very sad that it was more impressive than anything on that’s been on Raw in months. Smackdown is where it’s at Diva’s wise and I don’t see why people are complaining about the “Mean Girls” type destruction of Mickie James. Hey, at least it’s a storyline as opposed to “win the battle royal and get a title shot, then lose the match and go back to being a nobody”. Mind games are a lot of fun in the WWE and while this is a bet juvenile, I think they are playing on the internet gossip and rumors about the WWE and their issues with Mickie’s weight. The tears from MJ were probably real because I’m sure she’s read the rumors and I wouldn’t doubt if the WWE has mentioned something about, or if another Diva or superstar has. I thought the video was kind of funny in that “this is PG tv” kind of way. I mean come one, they can have McCool and Layla getting all lesbianic with Mickie like she did with Trish, the only other option for mind games would probably invovle a guy like with Dolph and Maria and that went absolutely nowhere. I doubt the WWE writers have anything surprising or fresh in mind for the girls so we will just have to settle with this.
November 20, 2009 at 6:12 pm
I enjoyed it. Yeah, it sounded like Michelle was singing to a preschool class but I really enjoyed it. It’s kind of funny that people have been saying “what will this do to the little girls who watch WWE?” and yet what do they show during Mickie James’ entrance? A mom holding up her little daughter. They’ve got to cater to kids right? So why not make Michelle act just like a little hellraiser on the playground? The only thing that bugs me is that when Michelle first turned last year, it was so serious & dramatic & after Michelle won the title 5 months ago, it’s been nothing but comedy. Makeup in the face, overdramatizing a not-so-serious-injury, groping, destroying relationships, ruining clothes & now namecalling. It needs to have that same grab-you-by-the-throat feel it did back in January & since July it’s been anything but.
On another note, I think it’s kinda funny that people are saying that Michelle has a “Mean Girls” gimmick and what movie comes on tonight during Michelle’s segment? “Mean Girls”.
November 20, 2009 at 6:12 pm
I love what the WWE is doing with Layla and Michelle. Everyone has similar gimmicks and attitude’s I think it’s kind of good idea to get their own TBP “Sort of”. As far as the match is concern Layla showing aggression was my favorite part of the match. As far the Promo is concerned, I did it find it funny but at the same time I felt bad for mickie when she started crying.
November 20, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Am I the only one who liked this? LOL, it kinda made me laugh out loud because its beyond immature, but its Mickies reaction that made me enjoy the whole promo. I love seeing the Diva’s display some sort of character so this was a win win for me, Michelle didnt do that bad, she wasnt the Rock by any means but she got the point across and managed to look like a bully doing so. THOSE PICTURES were HILLARIOUS, However Mickie is nowhere near fat, at all!
November 20, 2009 at 6:21 pm
i actually dont think people should be pointing their fingers at michelle/layla, the masterbrain behind this piggy james thing is creative, if WWE is having this storyline to ‘punish’ mickie i think it’s really sad and childish to make fun of someone in that kinda way, if this is just a storyline because they really want to have a highschool kinda vibe then i can understand/laugh about it and i dont think mickie will have an issue with this,
as for the video message from mccool, i had to laugh, it was funny & i think she actually doesnt sing that bad, but a singing carreer is a NO
November 20, 2009 at 6:27 pm
& oh another thing, was layla wearing a army camouflage kinda outfit? if soo, thats soo cool and i would love to see her and michelle really becoming a stable and both wearing camouflage outfits xD
November 20, 2009 at 6:49 pm
i dnt know why everybody is pointing fingers at michelle and layla
and making this such a big deal
its in the storyline
you cant blame them for doing thier job its not real as we all know
we all know mickie is one of the best divas right now
but is being “punished” so to say mickie looks great i think
but for the mccool segment i had to laugh also
i thought michelle sang ok it was cute :p
November 20, 2009 at 7:13 pm
donno but if mickie dont mind whts goin on it means she is a good actress
if not…it means wwe showing us how bad they r
November 20, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I don’t care what anyone says — this angle reeks of WWE playing on yet another real-life perception, which is Mickie James’ noticeable weight gain means she’s fat. I’m totally with Melanie on this one. And may I add that it’s silly written storylines such as this that contributed to the exits of both Molly Holly and Lita? I’m pretty sure Vickie Guerrero wasn’t too fond of the routine humiliation either.
Oh, and before I get the “Mickie must have agreed to this” I’d like to point out that once performers become humble enough to be poked fun at, the WWE have a habit of taking liberties. Look at Jillian Hall’s now shattered credibility as a wrestler thanks to this awful singing gimmick. Besides, all women involved in this angle are of a certain age that would lead you think they were above playground bitchiness.
November 20, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Michelle = Amazing. Died of laughter through it all and loved it more than any divas segment since mickie/trish
November 20, 2009 at 7:45 pm
OMG I love you so much mickie, your not fat at all, your beautiful and way better looking then that stick michelle
I really hate michelle,i don’t care if it’s scripted,it’s all tied together with mickies real life weight gain,it was PERSONAL and my heart goes out to mickie,I would also be upset if the whole world saw my face on a pig.For all the people who never noticed mickies weight before, they will notice now and that makes me mad
Mickie LEAVE WWE and come to TNA,TNA will threat you right unlike the disgrace that is WWE creative
November 20, 2009 at 8:08 pm
RKOyou- She was already in TNA and that didn’t do her any justice. It was just as bad as TNA is now.
The match was short but whatever I loved Layla and thought she handled it perfectly. Mickie on the other hand needs to lose some weight. WWE should fire her like they did with Cherry. The segment with Michelle was funny and I hate Michelle McFool so for that to entertain me is surprising. Mickie though you are a good competitor but crying instead of getting your revenge is retarded. It’s making you look like Kelly Kelly when she debuted and couldn’t unhook her bra. You are losing your sparkle. Maybe you need some Edward Cullen in your life to be dazzled. Stop crying you cry baby and go get revenge. Fuck what the writers write for you. They only make you look like a talentless pig. So Mickie lose some weight and then you’ll be holding that Woman’s Championship around your waist, because the only reason you aren’t champion right now is because it doesn’t buckle when you put it on your waist. Take it from WWE and lose some weight girl.
November 20, 2009 at 8:10 pm
The Mickie James/Michelle McCool saga continues with another display of what Melanie calls ” juvenile school pranks” its kindly making their smackdown diva segments now worth watching to see how Michelle McCool and Layla gonna make Mickie James’ life hell week after week. Right now, its like Melanie said, its all high school, but when we were in high school we saw these kind of people bullying others and we all wanted payback for that bully. I think its gonna make the conclusion of the James/McCool interesting when they finally get into the ring one on one and everybody is cheering on Mickie because at the end of the day, no one likes a bully.
November 20, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Armando – OMG, that was so, but so rude.
Are you out of your mind? Comparing Mickie…to Cherry? WHAT??? Its like comparing Maria to Lita or Trish.
Im not going to tell what I think about your comments on her weight, seriously. But you know, in the WWE and in TNA there’s something called SCRIPT. And when you jump script, unless you are a big superstar like Batista (he and Booker T had some real life issues) you probably get fired. But Mickie James is a PROFESSIONAL and she does what she is supposed to do. Just like Michelle.
Everyone is talking how bad this is to Mickie, but look at Michelle. She is a former teacher who’s making a fool out of herself and still she does it. Those girls are professionals. They aren’t going to leave a company because of a stupid storyline.
November 20, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Armando-Mickie was in TNA back in 2002,when there was NO womens division and when TNA did suck, now it’s awesome, you better recognize.Your saying mickie should lose some weight or WWE should fire, someone should fire you for commenting like that,it’s people like you that make big girls feel inferior to the skinny girls, mickie should not change the way she looks to satisfy people like you who obviously don’t have a heart
It’s not whats on the outside,it’s whats on the inside and mickie is beautiful inside and out and I hope she isn’t sad for real but who could blame her after going through this, wrestlers are human beings also,it’s not all in the script
November 20, 2009 at 8:26 pm
I imagine someone with the mentality of Armando submitted the script for this shit angle we’re seeing on Smackdown.
November 20, 2009 at 8:31 pm
@ RKOyou:
‘wrestlers are human beings also’
& that coming from one of the biggest mccool haters ever, you have said the nastiest things about her so thats pretty hypocritical of you.
November 20, 2009 at 8:33 pm
The whole skit was lame the funniest thing about it was Michelle’s “singing”. Seriously I’m all for a Michelle and Mickie feuding but these are grown women having Michelle and Layla coming out every week teasing Mickie and her running away crying is just silly.
November 20, 2009 at 8:42 pm
By the way, Layla was excellent here. She’ll never transcend jobber status, probably, but she does a nice job playing the snivelling villainess and her mic work has always been underrated. I hope she gets breathing space in the Survivor Series match, rather than be fodder to make Eve or Kelly Kelly look good.
November 20, 2009 at 8:44 pm
The offensive thing about this storyline is not treating Mickie James badly but how stupid the whole thing is. The stupidity of it is what I don’t like. It really sucks that WWE Divas these days either have no storylines or storylines that are terrible and lame.
November 20, 2009 at 8:44 pm
afca-I don’t see Michelle ever getting humilated on TV,when she does, then we’ll talk
November 20, 2009 at 8:54 pm
RKOyou: does that really make a difference, if its reading nasty things about yourself on the internet or being humilated on tv to me feels like the same thing, both feelings are hurt
but lets keep it at that ]shall we? you do have a valid point, but as a fan of mccool i see it from another side.
November 20, 2009 at 10:10 pm
eew did layla take fashion tips from maria this week?
the match was ok shame it was over quick, but i liked the ending,
poor mickey that segment was lame
November 20, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Well first of all,I expected the match to be a little longer, but no.It was good for what it was.Not gonna lie,I laughed at the whole Michelle segment, but looking back on it,t is a bit cruel. This weeks Smackdown was sad,and I think Mickie was crying FOR REAL!If not, she’s a damn good actress.
Armando-WTF?What you said was just cruel, and I see nothing wrong with Mickie’s weight. It’s people like you that corrupt people’s minds.
P.S.I liked Layla’s outfit this week.
November 20, 2009 at 10:18 pm
i honestly don’t see the big deal. atleast they acually care enough about smackdown divas to give them an acual storylinee. if you think about it that way the segments kind of geniusee. but mickie just crying is stupidd. she should get pissed and chase layla away or somethingg. oh&& did anyone notice how good mickie looked this weekk. much better then last week. she always looks like a dirtbag when she wears that blue ring attire she wore last weekk.
November 20, 2009 at 10:18 pm
If those weren’t real tears she had me convinced. I actually found the segment insulting and I wasn’t even on the receiving end. Layla has improved a lot in the ring I must say I really hope they’re doing this to give Mickie a push towards a fifth woman’s championship reign and not just doing it to bully her.
November 20, 2009 at 10:22 pm
gtfo armando. Internet heel games = fail and not funny. James is hot, and while I found the segment to be great, your comments were stupid and unfunny just like your probably are.
November 20, 2009 at 10:31 pm
after seeing this i kind of get the feeling mickie will be retiring very soon. reminds me of how lita left almost, and all the references of mickie being “one of the best divas ever”. that might explain why they are pushing melina and possibly beth into those slots. i predict mickie will win the woman’s title in her final match against michelle very soon. and then beth phoenix will fill the top face slot on smackdown
November 20, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Funny how some of the divadirt readers that used to call Mickie “fat” are now furious about how she is made fun off. Guess some people just look for excuses to hate.
But based on the reactions this story has already generated in a few days time, you can only draw 1 conclusion: Michelle is becoming a great heel, just as they planned it. And this is the first time in 2009 that people actually care about Mickie James. So i take my hat off for the creative team, they are doing an excellent job.
November 20, 2009 at 10:53 pm
GGRRRR the segment with manchelle was a really tasteless way to further the mickie michelle/layla fued
November 21, 2009 at 12:57 am
I found it hilarious. People need to lighten up.
November 21, 2009 at 1:58 am
Mikas-Dude u r like my best friend here on Diva-Dirt LOL that is exactly what im talking about ppl on here who was calling mickie fat and overrtated and stuff r now jumping to her defense…smh…
I thought the match was good btw…they both did great…
Mickie is my favorite Diva of course..I know she isnt Fat so I dont get offended when they call her fat or make fun of weight , Mickie is a beautiful , skillfull and talented young women. Yeah WWE may be making fun of her or maybe they arent who knows and who cares. If she was just to leave wwe for weight issues …they will be the ones begging her and offering her all this money in the next 6yrs when they need her again…or when she is in TNA.
November 21, 2009 at 2:04 am
Maybe instead of replying to me all you guys should be sending Piggy James some packages filled with Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig, and all kinds of weight losing brochures as well as some diet pills. People need to lighten up not everyone is going to be all up Mickie James’ ass and praise her. I liked psycho Mickie, so until that one returns this “mickie” that WWE has been shoving down our throats is boring and fat and should reconsider a personal trainer. GTFO if you can’t handle other peoples comments.
November 21, 2009 at 2:22 am
The Segment was very funny lol
November 21, 2009 at 2:25 am
You should take your own advice Armando.
November 21, 2009 at 2:45 am
Lol .MCH That’s the best you got. Don’t worry about my life, worry about your Piggy Mickie James.
November 21, 2009 at 2:48 am
I’m soo pissed I can’t believe wwe allows this to happen,I just saw the match here in my house still watching Sd and I just can’t believe they went soo low to the point where a persons feelings got hurt, scripted or not, that was really really mean and I’ve watched wwe for years and I just can’t believe a 4 time women’s and 1 time Diva’s champion gets treated that way,I like Michelle and Layla but that had nothing to do with wrestling is not their business if Mickie is fat or not, which to me she’s not but to wwe ok she needs to pull it together and lose some weight, but she’s beautiful and talented but of course that job requires the superstars to stay fit but it wasn’t necessary seriously….I guess that’s wwe now,but I think it was up to Michelle and Layla,Mickie got embarrased in front of Millions of people! they crossed the line, but well I guess that’s wwe!…but again scripted or not that was really really mean!.
November 21, 2009 at 2:51 am
and BTW is not funny anymore when you see someone cry like that!!!.
November 21, 2009 at 3:04 am
So lol you’re mad because physco Mickie is gone?,woow if you were a fan then why not now?,that just shows how great of a fan you are,how can someone who sounds so smart be so immature?…..oh Armando not trying to starts something here just saying what if Mickie loses some pounds will you like her again?,hmm just saying!.
November 21, 2009 at 3:32 am
Guys, it’s basically useless challenging Armando’s posts when he suggests something so nonsensical like Mickie defying creative’s orders and putting her own career in jeapordy. That just suggests he doesn’t have a clue.
Onto SmackDown.. while I do appreciate the fact that they’re doing something storyline-wise FINALLY for the Divas, I just can’t get behind this particular storyline because it’s so grade school-ish. That’s just how I feel. I would literally be embarrassed if I was watching this with the family or a few friends tbh. But that’s the problem with the WWE as a whole, it’s all directed towards the kiddies now. Ehh. Layla’s pretty good on the mic though imo, I guess that’s something positive to take out of this.
*crosses fingers for Survivor Series* I hope it’s as good as last year’s, or is that asking too much at this point? Maybe I should expect a train wreck and be pleasantly surprised. -.-
November 21, 2009 at 4:39 am
That wasn’t right. Tasteless. She looked legitimately hurt.
November 21, 2009 at 5:00 am
Did anyone notice Striker and Grisham saying at the very end that Michelle was pretty funny after they first sold it as mean a few seconds eariler? Maybe WWE is going to play this for laughs.
November 21, 2009 at 5:04 am
The debates here are funny…I esp like how people think the WWE is mistreating Mickie…she is a FOUR time women’s champ and a Divas champ and has had a great career. The sketch tonight wasn’t the best thing they have ever done, but at least they are telling a story (maybe not your favorite) and giving the girls some air time. I prefer seeing Michelle in a farmer’s outfit more than seeing that stupid R-Truth come down and ruin another brilliant CM Punk promo…gessshhh, talk about amatuer hour. “What’s Up! The Truth! And the truth is I don’t like you!” Thanks R-Truth.
I also think it is funny when people say Mickie (or wrestler “x”) should quit WWE and go to TNA. People love telling others what they should do. Mickie’s paycheck is prob sweet and she is a hero to kids all over the world. That’s a bad gig?? Whether we / they always like the storylines or not, every wrestler wants to reach the top of their profession and being employeed by WWE is the major leagues compared to TNA. All the stars that leave WWE and then bad-mouth the company all come across as bitter (yeah, like WWE really misses Ken Kennedy). I’d love to see how many TNA “stars” would say “no” to a call from Vince. God the thought of watching a federation that still employs Scott Steiner and Kevin Nash (and soon Hogan LOL!) makes me cringe. Talk about stale.
