Survivor Series 2009 in Review: Melina Leads Team Mickie to Victory

Last night’s Survivor Series match was billed as Team Mickie vs Team Michelle but it was Divas Champion, Melina that scored the final pinfall and took the win for her team. When originally announced, it seemed odd that the Divas Champ would be playing second fiddle to someone else as team captain, which it makes it all the more surprising that last night we saw a ‘switcheroo’ of sorts with her gaining the win.

What that says about each Diva and their current favourability with management could be looked into; Melina’s omission from captaincy and the fact that even though it was her team, Mickie wasn’t the one to win the match. I’m sure it’s not by mistake given the reports we’ve heard in the past week about both. But despite where they might stand with WWE higher ups, there is no doubt that they are still the two top Divas in the company and would still have to be booked as such — despite backstage politics.

Overall, the match was as expected: we saw a lot of quick eliminations before a few Divas were left standing. Anyone who expected anymore than this would be foolish. Even with an elimination match like this which requires more time, the Divas aren’t going to be a priority compared to the men and if we think about it — they did get more time than they’re usually afforded. What should be considered more highly then, is not the timing, but what the Divas did with it. And if we’re looking at the layout of the match, I think all ten women did a great job with the time they were given.

Watch the match below:

As with last year, we got to see some new combinations. The tease of Gail Kim & Michelle McCool was interesting and harkens back to their good work together on SmackDown in April. Meanwhile, Jillian vs Eve is a WWE Superstars match waiting to happen. Though in comparison to last year, the excitement level for these mini-matches just wasn’t there. It was a year ago at this event that we were initially teased with Michelle vs Mickie, something I still remember to this day, so it’s interesting that now a year later — we’re in the midst of building to that match. Meanwhile other matches such as Melina vs Michelle have already been done. It really drums the point home: there are very few fresh matches left between this group of Divas. Even with the rising Diva, Alicia Fox, we’ve already seen her versus Mickie and Melina. Perhaps the injection of Natalya could have lead to some interesting combinations with Melina, Mickie and/or Gail.

That said, I can’t help but feel this year’s match was more cohesive than last year’s. The supposed ‘weak links’ weren’t so weak; Alicia, Eve, Kelly and Layla all played their parts well. The initial exchange between Kelly and Layla was far from what we’ve seen from them in the past, both came across as more confident and knowledgable in the ring than ever before. Layla, though she didn’t connect it, hit a beautiful spinning kick in the corner on Kelly, while Kelly’s step-up legdrop is easily one of the most silently effective moves. Eve held her own against Michelle, though I have to say, her exchange with Jillian was sloppy at times. Meanwhile Alicia Fox, who is without a doubt the standout of 2009, had a good showing with Mickie James including a beautiful northern lights suplex. Just breathtaking to watch her arch.

Some had expected the Glamazon to be booked more strongly in this match and to them I say, she was. Despite being eliminated third in her team, she took out two Divas in quick succession and WWE did their bit to keep her strong in that sense. Arguably, Alicia and Michelle are the top heels on their brands right now as they’re involved in the title picture, so it wouldn’t have served as well for Beth to survive till the end. I think WWE did a good job in making her look dominant and powerful and that’s all we can ask for.

Nearing the end of the match then, we got two exchanges: an exchange between Mickie & Michelle which will likely be a full blown match in the near future, and an exchange between Melina and Michelle which has proven to be a winning formula this year. I don’t know what it says about Mickie, but I thought the difference between the two exchanges was vast. On the one hand, the work between Mickie & Michelle was more slow and at times, boring while the work between the two champions was as it has always been: fast, hard hitting and a spectacle. If we are to watch Michelle vs Mickie for a full length match then I would hope it’s a step up from this encounter. Technically sound though it was, there wasn’t an entertainment factor. It’s the same situation with Mickie/Beth and Melina/Beth.

The hot tag to Melina at the end of the match was superbly done, the crowd got into it as the favourite, Mickie struggled to tag in the fresh Melina and when she did, the crowd got behind it. The pops for Melina’s signature moveset added an excitement to the end of the match and I guess, if we must end this match on a high why not go with a proven formula — Melina vs Michelle? These two Divas have insane chemistry and as in the past, worked great together. A satisyfing conclusion.

In an ideal situation, the Divas would get as much time as the men and the eliminations would be more sporadic. However given the way the match went, I think they used their time well — cut the fat and then have a few Divas go at it till the end. The formula worked. We were able to invest more in the three Divas at the end of the match because we weren’t distracted by multiple tags and eliminations too close to the end.

In comparison to last year’s match, which is a favourite, I think this isn’t better nor worse — but on par. A great effort by all involved.

What can I say? I totally agree with you about Natalya. She’s an amazing heel that would have been great in the match. About Melina pinning Michelle, I think it proves that WWE isn’t loosing faith on her, because if they did, she would probably be eliminated. I’m not going to talk about Mickie, because after this I’m still not sure if the rumors of the already infamous wake up call, are true or not. I’m expecting to see what will happen on Raw. Lets just hope they don’t put Mickie in tears again.

Btw, im going to give credit to Kelly (for the first time in my life). That legdrop was amazing and efficient.

I’m happy Melina got to beat michelle, there whole fued on smackdown was michelle dominating so I loved the ending

Jillian was very impressive,i think she finally worked off her ring rust and is finally kicking ass again,i loved how she was owning eve, also loved the power blue outfit:D

very dissappointed with how they used Gail..can’t say I’m surprised, the second gail got tagged in,I knew Michelle would squash her, this is like the 7th time Michelle has beaten Gail and Gail has like 0 wins over michelle, this is crazy

alicia didn’t do anything except her bridging pin,I still think people overate her,she only has 2 moves in her arsenal

Melina was amazing, loved her rage coming out, like all the power on earth just went into her body

poor mickie, she looks so upset, maybe everything has gotten to her,her sadiness makes me sad

I loved how Beth easily pinned kelly and eve like it was nothing,I thought she would be the sole survivor

i didn’t like it. there was just nothing there that separated it from the usual multiple diva tag matches (other than it being elimination style, of course). i still remember last year’s like i only just watched it, there’s nothing in this match that really stood out for me – other than gail being eliminated so early. perhaps i just need to readjust and start to get used to the way the diva matches are instead of always hoping for better.

I think this match was more of a test to see if Melina and Mickie are still the top girls in the company and they have passed the test and a good reaction from the fans.

Melina and Mickie have great chemistry i hope to seem more interaction from them in the coming year because Melina vs Mickie is a good draw for a stagnant woman’s division in WWE.

Overall the match was okay nothing really stood out like last year because in last year Survivor Series Maryse really made the show and that was a sick kick she gave to Beth last year. I have nothing against Maryse she has some untapped potential but i just hope she can finally grow when she comes back and stop doing the same three moves she should place more emphasize on her martial arts background.

I think Michelle did a good job she is really agressive which is no surprise and since she is woman’s champion there is no doubt she is still going to be the last one they did that last year with Beth when she was champ. Overall she was on point and made herself look strong and kind of dominant disturbing a bit when you have someone like Beth who i think should have a SS winning streak.

what i did not like was Gail getting elimnated.

Gail is such a great wrestler and so exciting to watch her speed in the ring is out of this world WWE needs to start using her more because she has it but WWE needs to book her right.

Melina once again strong and consistent proved why she is the best girl in the roster and that whole thing about WWE losing faith in her is total bull she has only been in RAW for five weeks and she does not have a feud yet. WWe should focus more on their booking instead of trying to blame Melina for their screwups besides Jillian was really the one who botched Melina’s finisher.

Overall a decent match dissapointed when Gail and Beth got eliminated

Congrats to Melina and Mickie, however I found the whole thing underwhelming. Could the WWE be any more obvious about their feelings towards the Divas? Or were we supposed to feel like we were getting something more like a main event because it was between two championships? I didn’t feel a story was told in this match but I liked Beth the most!

Oh, and I think that last years match is better in that I was much more entertained, amongst other things; something just didn’t click for me in this one. I hope they have something good for Monday night! That’s not hoping for too much, is it?

Michelle – Michelle did well in this. She really showed that she’s heel, Well, except for her music
Beth – Beth was sooo dominant is this match, Those moves were powerful
Jillian – She was okay but Eve messed it up for her
Kelly – Kelly was just Kelly, nothing new from her
Layla – Layla was awesome, I love how cocky she was
Mickie – Mickie was one of the best’s in this match but I wish she would’ve did a DDT
Eve – When she got in the ring with Jillian she botched almost everything. But, he sold that GlamSlam well
Gail – Gail was on fire in this match, I can’t believe that she got eliminated so fast
Alicia – Alicia didn’t do anything but a few punches and a northern lights. Would’ve been nice to see a axe
Melina – Melina was the Ultimate diva in this match but that Last Call needed more impact

Overall, this match was nothing compared to last years

Alicia was the only rookie diva that did good last night she only did one move northern lights suplex but she still outshines Layla, Kelly Kelly, Eve, and Jillian. Her strength is amazing she pick up Mickie.

Alicia only has 2-3 moves so does Maryse and half of the roster. She can’t do moves just out of the bat like Michelle can.

Eve, Layla, Jillian, and Kelly were so sloppy during that match.

    But Melina did great.

The match was ok, the work was solid, but last years was much more entertaining.
What this match showed very well is that the talent is nearly non with some of the girls, I know this is ridiculous but I still had hope for WWE to hire women based on their in-ring work.

Kelly improved a lot, is she any good? Not that much, her finisher was ok, but she looks weak and shows no charisma, just a tanned beauty that manages to do a backflip!

Alicia was really not that impressive in this match, I like that her in-ring style is unique and her selling is dramatic, she reminds me of Maryse a bit, only more talented in-ring wise, this wasn’t her night tho, sloppy punches and slow action.

Eve just showed that she truly isn’t the future of WWE, everything she did was sloppy, she’s far better than Maria and Rosa, no possible comparisons. But she looks overtired at times, and the botchy offense doesn’t help that much.

From the “less talented” girls, Layla was the better one, she showed personality, passion, strength, all in that match, she may have missed that kick to Kellys head, but everything she did besides that was flawless, I was rather impressed since I never thought of her as a serious in-ring worker! Major VicTara vibes!!

Mickie was pretty good. She really came back to herself since moving to SmackDown! I’m proud!

Melina was extremely good in this match, I was preparing for the worst, but she managed to wow me every single time! Great work!

For the few seconds she was in the ring, Gail Kim was perfect, fast-paced and charismatic, she’s just one of the most talented women in wrestling!

Jillian was great, much better than her last encounters with Melina, I love her, Eve should’ve learn how to sell moves properly tho…

Beths work may come out as a bit rough, but I love that she’s totally different in-ring wise than the other girls, she looks like she’s improvising the moves, which is amazing! Her best showing in a while.

Michelle was great as always! Nothing to add…

I am hopeful that this win really means something for Mickie James, if you look at who were the soul survivors in there matches you have Kofi Kingston who is getting a huge push right now on Raw, you also have The Miz, Sheamus and Drew Mcintyre who are getting huge pushes as well on there respected brands, so i am hopeful this means the same for soul survivors Mickie James and Melina. They are the two top divas in the wwe and you can’t deny the type of fan base they have, just look at the crowd and how into it they were. I love Mickie James and Melina, i don’t care if there heel or face, i just respect them so much and how hard they have worked for all these year :) I also think we should all concentrate less on the GOSSIP about Mickie and Melina being frowned on backstage( which we have now real proof it this is true, do to the fact that we weren’t there) and more on there wrestling. Because we don’t want this website to turn into a Divas wrestling Perezhilton now do we?

I thought last year there was more storytelling and drama involved, so I liked that. However, this year the wrestling was MUCH better and I like that too. So both matches are on par for me also. If this year’s had had more story & drama, I would have liked it more than last year.

    November 23, 2009 at 9:20 pm

    RKOyou: IMO, she did.

What did Jillian did? Layla? Eve? Kelly Kelly?

When Layla and Kelly Kelly were in that match they botch, Alicia didn’t. Jillian was once again sloppy with Eve. Kelly Kelly is just Kelly Kelly.

At least Alicia can do a move and don’t botch it; I can’t say the same thing with the other diva.

She only did the lights suplex but that was great. The only people that did one and more moves were Mickie, Melina, and Michelle.

The rest of the divas did one or two moves. Beth only did Glam Slam, but no one is compaining about that. That just ONE move.

The truth is Alicia didn’t do practically anything. I think is unfair to Kelly, saying that alicia was better, when in fact she wasn’t. Please people, K2 might not be an A class diva, but she improved a lot for a girl who started as a stripper (yes, she was nothing more than a stripper when she started to work on ECW). She should be an example, because she’s trying to improve herself. At least she’s no Maria (who really sucks in ring, but yet was a lot of fans just because she’s pretty and has that dumb gimmick.)

  • RKOyou
    November 23, 2009 at 9:33 pm

xxChristinaxx-Jillian did a beautiful cartwheel into a armdriver, she then started driving her knees into eves face, she then did a facebuster, followed by some punches, she then perfectly lifted up eve into a reversal but eve took control,Jillian then blocked eves dropkick, followed by an impressive roll up,then she continured with some kicks, and then she attempted her cartwheel into the corner but failed, and then was eliminated.Jillian for only being in the match for less then 2 minutes, did a lot more then alicia did

all alicia did was sloppy punches and she didn’t even lift mickie, she picked her up and then mickie went down again, not hard at all but i guess that little doing means a lot to you

I’m not bashing alicia,i’m just stating what was in the match,if she did something note worthy,I would have given her credit but she didn’t,you should try giving credit where credit is due instead bashing every diva you don’t like even if they do a good job,i may hate michelle but I’ve never bashed her wrestling

I have to agree with you xxChristinaxx Jillian hall is not a good wrestler or worker anymore the only thing she is good at now is singing out of key and feuding with the guest host, and that is what she should do from now on. I have no clue why the Hart dynasty each member but Nattie especially was left out of this survivor series. Do you no how much better the match would of gone if Natalya vs Eve was injected instead of Eve and Jillian. Natalya and Eve have worked together in the past and have had some good matches. So why Natalya was left out of this equation i will never no :( but yeah stick Jillian in the back with the guest host from now on. Also Layla and Eve has grown tremendously especially Eve. Love that girl future womens champion right there. :)

  • TheHartDynasty
    November 23, 2009 at 10:05 pm

RKOyou even though Jillian hall has won 13 championships and is a 10 year veteran, doesn’t hide the fact that she has lost some of her fire or desire for wrestling and don’t go blaming it on management or Eve like you did Melina when Jillian had a few botches against her. Eve is a rookie in this game she has only been wrestling for what 9 1/2 months at the most and Jillian has been according to you wrestling for 10 years. If Jillian was a veteran she would no how to cover up those botches like past veterans have done. Its not a coincidence that each recent match Jillian Hall has been in there have been a few botches. Melina worked great in this match against Michelle McCool, maybe its because Michelle McCool has that fire and aggression that a heel diva should have and I think Jillian hall needs to learn a few things from this former school teacher.

dunk20-Really?You came on here just to say that?

Really people, since when has Diva-Dirt gotten so caddy? It’s like a high school here!I remember when I could come on here, post my comment, and someone would respond R-E-S-P-E-C-T-F-U-L-L-Y.This is a women’s wrestling website, not a bitchy forum,so let’s keep it that way please!

Moving on,Kelly impressed me somewhat in the match.I like her finisher, and I feel people never give her the credit she deserves because they think of er as Kelly the “spot monkey”,not Kelly the wrestler.

I loved Layla’s fiestyness, and she definitely has the best ring presence out of all the divas in the match, for me at least.

Gail did great for the short amount of time she ad,although I wish she could have at least hit a crossbody off the top rope or something.

Eve was the sloppiest one out of all the women in the match. Her selling was horrible, with the exception of the GlamSlam, though.Overall, not her night.

Jillian got some nice offense in,and I loved how she just basically dominated Eve,almost like she was whooping her for being bad, lol.

Alica played her role well, but I would have liked to see her get hit with Mickie’s ddt because I know she would have sold it perfectly.

Beth did great playing er part, and I simply adored the way she crushed Mickie after being eliminated,as well as refusing to leave right away. That’s the Glamazon for ya’. d(^-^)b

Mickie proved that she’s getting her fire back, and I can’t wait to see her at er best. Her small exchange wit Michelle was a little “bleh”,and I’m sure if they really wanted to they could have put on a nice showing, remember last year?Their spot last year was the best of all the small mini-matches.

    Michelle was great.

Melina was the standout for me.She got the fans into the match along with Michelle. My only problem is that she executed the same exact moves with Michelle, and that Last Call sucked.

Overall, besides the small, botches ere and there,I was pleased.Last year was jsut a smidge better for me,but this year was great too.

KellyKelly-She did great, and is showing she can hold her own in the ring. I love how she is starting to carry her opponents– Instead of them carrying her.
Layla- She just has a cocky attitude- nothing more.
Michelle-She is great now, i have a lot of respect for her hard work.
Beth- She is just to great for words.. i don’t know how to describe her wrestling ability. She gives wwe womans division a hole new meaning.
Mickie- She sucks, not much i can say. Never been a fan Never will. She is a good wrestler… but, let’s face it… she sucks now.
Melina-She is so talented, she show’s you can be beautiful & a good wrestler at the same time.

Alicia- Uh, i don’t think she has proven anything to be 1# Contender just yet. She needs to improve. Much, Much, Much, more. And you all over rate her to much on this site. She really isn’t anything special in my eye’s.
Eve- She is the new queen of botches, think she could do a little bit better.
Jillian- Same ole’ same ole’ not much to say.

    All & all i give this match on a scale of 1-10 a 5…

    it wasn’t the best match,
it didn’t get good till Mickie and Michelle were in the ring IMO

Beth eliminating both eve and Kelly Kelly was way to predictable,

beth always seems to end the match with the double chicken wing
(is it the glam slam? shes changed that damn move so many times)
she maybe should have used her suplex (also refereed to as the glam slam) to eliminate kelly

i think i’m going to refer to every move by Beth as the glam slam from now on lol

  • MickieJamesFan07
    November 23, 2009 at 11:40 pm

Michelle- Did pretty well for someone who hasn’t wrestled on tv since the last PPV.
Mickie- Getting her fire back. Did really well and was glad she and Melina were the sole survivors
Melina- Also did really well, no botching or sloppiness.
Beth- Dominant as always, wished she was in longer.
Gail- Really got screwed out of this match.
Alicia- Didn’t really do much, the Northern Lights Suplex was really good.
Kelly Kelly- Boring as always and a bit sloppy.
Eve- Was also a bit sloppy, but sold the Glam Slam really well.
Jillian- Was sloppy, and didn’t really stand out.
Layla- Like Alicia, didn’t do much either. Her kick to Kelly was botched.

  • Kelsey
    November 23, 2009 at 11:44 pm

The match was better then i expected. It may have been short with fast eliminations and stuff but it was still good.

Layla – She just did okay before she was first eliminated. Nothing more to say

Kelly Kelly – She just did fine. I love her finisher. I don’t know why everyone is saying she didn’t do good. I know that people can have opinions and thats okay with me but i just hate how nobody can never have nothing positive to say when it comes to her wrestling. Yeah i get it, shes not the best diva wrestler but atleast give her credit for trying her best. She actually wants to be good and improve but no one can never give her credit.

Eve – She just did fine. A elimination on Jillian surprised me. From what some people are saying especially by one person @PedroPedroso17 who said that she truly isn’t the future of wrestling just by being sloppy in this match. Um..okay wtf? Go re-watch her past matches on Smackdown and you can see that she actually is the future of the divas division so why you going by just ONE sloppy match and say that she isn’t the future? Give me a break. She obviously can do better but come on it was an elimination match and everyone tends to botch when it comes to the divas when the match goes that fast.

Alicia – She did fine. Alicia is just Alicia and there nothing more for me to say since she isn’t all that great to me. I still don’t care for her in any way

Beth – She did great. 2 Glam Slams back to back…yeah that was great…though i hated the one on Eve though lol!

Gail – For the short time she was in she did great. It just pissed me off how she was elminated so quickly, especially by McCool. She truly does deserve better then what shes getting. Its just a shame in how WWE is treating her. Coming back to WWE was a mistake…

Jillian – She did okay. Nothing more i can say.

Michelle – Did great. All i can say really about her since she was the captian lol

Mickie – She did great too and was one of the best in whole match. I wish she would have done the DDT. I just hope this means something for her but i was if it did then wouldn’t she have been the one that pinned Michelle instead? o.O I don’t know but i hope it does mean something from her.

Melina – She was awesome! Definatly the star of the match right next to Mickie. I love her Last Call move. Its just amazing and one of the best diva finishers IMO! Although that one was kinda sloppy. Sometimes Michelle sells it perfectly but sometimes she sells it just sloppy. Also in reply to what @trishstratusfan4ever said about Melina not being all that great of a wrestler. Um…okay? Are you blind? Out of all the divas on the whole roster, Melina is one of those divas who can ACTUALLY wrestle.

I would give this match a 6.5 out of 10. I’m happy with the end result since Melina & Mickie are my favorite divas so thats pretty much why i give it a 6. Overall with the fast eliminations and botches so i don’t know if its any better then last years but i actually perfer this years over last years. Probably because of the end result but yeahhh :P

I’m pretty dissapointed with this.. Why is SD putting so much time and effort into Beth being un-beatable on tv lately only to have her so easily pinned by Mickie.. She should have been the only Survivor – and I’m not even a “Glamazon” fan, at all.. Yeah it woulda been a repeat of last year but it just would made more sense..

Alicia was good, but Maryse is the #1 heel on the RAW brand. I think they’re almost equal as far as skill but as far as charisma and being a bigger name in wrestling, its gotta be Maryse. But I think A. Fox and Maryse will make an awesome team.. can’t wait to see Maryse back!!

SoRandy4Rosa: That was a really good point, that once again makes me think in the Natalya situation. She had a victory against Mickie on Smackdown, for what, since she wasn’t appart of this match?

I love Nattie, but this was kinda non-sense. It would have make way more sense, if Beth had pinned her OR if they have used Nattie instead of Jillian.

Layla – I really think she’s improving in the ring and I prefer her hair straightened.

Kelly – Actually had me convinced that she’s improving.

Gail – I was so disappointed in how Gail was eliminated first on the face side in this match. Doesn’t give me much hope in regards to her becoming a championship contender when it appears that they’re favouring every other diva over her.

Jillian – I still don’t see her as anything more then a jobber.

Eve – Don’t see what the big deal is with Eve, she got pwned.

Beth – I’m surprised at how quickly she was eliminated especially seeing as Alicia was still left after her. But I definitely liked how she attacked Mickie after she was eliminated. WWE is calling Michelle, Layla and Beth a Trio so I think it’s gonna be a three on one handicap situation.

Alicia – I was surprised how long she lasted in this match but I put it down to the fact she wasn’t tagged in for ages.

Michelle – I’m really loving Michelle right now, shes being a bit pre-school with her tauntings but it’s effective. Not only that she’s also the top heel in WWE in my opinion, I’m hoping to see her vs Beth sometime in the near future.

Mickie – She looked good in this match, she was the feisty fire fly we know and love. It’s strange to see Mickie as a victim because I always thought of her as stronger then that. I think she’s folding under the pressure a bit. I’m hoping this isn’t Mickie’s last pay-per-view. I’m glad she was co-survivor.

Melina – She was the star of this match, even though she was the last tagged in, she out-shone all the other divas and dominated Michelle McCool. I loved her screaming. It made my day.

The match was okay. Not awesome, not terrible, just okay.

I thought everyone did their part pretty darn good, and won’t pick out each Diva and give them a grading scale or anything like that. Despite what has been said on the Internet over the last couple of days, it was nice to see Melina and Mickie as the sole survivors.

Oh, to those that DO like Eve and actually see something in her…I wouldn’t get mad or steamed. Just smile. Just wait til WWE pulls the trigger. It will be worth it when the time’s right.

They’ve pulled the trigger with Alicia Fox (it’s only a matter of time before she gets that belt), they pulled the trigger with Jillian (small trigger, but they pulled it nethertheless), they pulled the trigger with Maryse, Candice…you get the point. I may be wrong on this, but I think it’s only a matter of time before Eve’s trigger is pulled.

At anyone criticizing Eve and Alicia it was just one match and I bet they were rush as well…Just because they made some mistakes it doesn’t mean that is the end of their careers..Look at Melina and Jillian and they still going!!! Get over it…dont grab what ever reason to make someone look bad in other people eyes!

With that say the audience was pretty fair in my opinion! Something that didnt benefit the match was that It was after a world championship match and the audience was tired!
