SmackDown Redux (December 4th, 2009) – Best Divas Action in Years!

Congratulations are in order for the Divas of SmackDown as I can positively say that this week’s episode was the best Divas action that I’ve seen in quite some time. From the #1 Contenders Match featuring three of the most talented women in the WWE, actual storyline set up afterwards and the return of a Diva — WWE managed to pack a lot into 10 minutes [which is pretty long for a Divas segment on TV] but it all came across as being important. Watch the action below:

On paper, the triple threat match between Beth Phoenix, Mickie James and Natalya seemed full-proof and it was. The work between all three Divas was fantastic, particularly the interaction between the power houses of WWE’s women’s division — Phoenix and Natalya. The way the pair cleared the ring of Mickie James in the early going and then fought among themselves was a great touch. Natalya is probably one of the most talented Divas to ever step foot into the WWE but hasn’t received the same opportunities as Phoenix or James. If we didn’t have spoilers prior, Natalya would be the one I would be rooting for — and to be completely honest, even though I knew the outcome, I still kind of did hope for her to win!

Some beautiful spots in this match including Mickie’s hurricanrana on Natalya, and Natalya’s discus clothesline on Mickie. But perhaps the most impressive is Beth’s effortless Glam Slam on a woman that equals her in stature. A fantastic spot.

The end sees Mickie James dropkick Beth out of the ring and ‘steal’ the victory. I really liked Mickie’s placement in this match, she couldn’t conceivably be considered as physical as Beth or Natalya, so they used her as a scrappy underdog fighting against the larger Divas.

Meanwhile, the real greatness in this match was the work between Beth and Natalya. I’d absolutely love to see a secondary between these two as a result of this week’s show, in addition to Michelle-Mickie. With Beth squashing Divas left, right and center, here she got an opponent that can step toe-to-toe with her and have a knock-down fight with. Perhaps market Natalya as almost an equal to Beth and see which Diva comes out on top.

In addition to the match, we had storyline advancement in the feud between Mickie James and Michelle McCool. I don’t understand why Mickie needed to win a No. 1 Contenders Match to get a shot at the title when she had clearly been the
uncrowned #1 Contender. And surely, beating McCool’s team at Survivor Series could be enough reason to give her a title shot? Nonetheless, I really enjoyed that we got to see some real tension with that post-match promo. Mickie taking the mic really added some personal animosity to this feud and it seems that for the first time in a long time, we may actually get a storyline rather than just a feud between two Divas. While Mickie’s promo skills aren’t the most convincing, I think her intonation was there and she got across the emotion her character was feeling in those words.

The attack after, again, was nicely done and sold the animosity. Meanwhile it also sets up the return of Maria, who has been unofficially on leave. I can’t particularly say I’m looking forward to Maria wrestling in the near future but even I’ll admit, it’s great to see WWE acknowledging her return and having her come back in a meaningful way. She may not be my favourite in-ring performer, but I have something of a soft spot for Maria [as a person] — maybe I’m getting soft? It was kinda nice to see her back. Shock horror. I’m sure I’ll be over it by the time she tags in during next week’s inevitable tag team match!

All in all however, I think WWE ticked all the boxes this week: great match, great storyline set-up and though it is a tried, tested and perhaps cliched return — I much preferred this one to Maryse’s.

this was awesome. I really hope that the Natalya and Beth was a tease for a future fued while mickie is fighting michelle for the title!

I thought the match was okay, but really, not much different that a normal TV match except being 4 minutes instead of 3. I’d compare it to the Mickie-Natalya match from a couple weeks ago. The crowd’s interest in the match seemed to vary depending on how involved Mickie was in the action.

These DIVAS put on a hell of a show this week. It is only the third time this year I have been this proud of them, NOC Melina vs Michelle, RAW Mickie vs Beth for Divas title and now this week. I am so proud of them all. Although like Maryse, Maria makes me nervous when she gets in the ring, I am really happy she is back, evening the odds.

This is what the fans of the divas need and want to see more of!!! Great match by all three of these ladies!! Its a shame that Mickie has been recieving so much bad press recently, like her or not while she isnt as physically dominant as Natalya and Beth, she has been the most popular diva since Trish and Lita left , constantly a pleasure to watch and one of my favourite Divas!!
I am begging for a Natalya/Beth fued and would love to see Beth turn face!!! Will be interesting to see how Maria plays in this storyline and wether or not she has improved anymore in her ringwork????

Great match by all 3 of them. When michelle first won the title i was like WHAT!!! but now seeing some of the best fueds and matches on smackdown in years come from her and other divas. IM LOVIN MCCOOL. and the main diva fueds seem so real did you see melinas face last week when maryse fliped her hair at her :o

I loved that it involved all divas on SmackDown! And Natalya inside that ring is just amazing, she’s so amazingly awesome, I really want her to become a champion, one way or another!

The end was nearly perfect, the catfight between Layla and Maria looked quite good and that slap was sold really well, the only thing distracting me was the drag-queen look on the returning Maria, honestly, who the buck thought that would look nice?!

Anyways, I’m really thankful for the divas action this week!

the match wasn’t that good,it was kind of boring, there were no memorable spots, the match okay but I’ve seen better.I wish Natayla won but i knew it wouldn’t happen

YEAH MARIAS BACK and WHAT A SLAP:D

Patiently waiting for a Beth vs Nattie match (don’t care who wins) love Mickie stealing a win, haven’t seen that from a face diva in a while, great promo, Mickie can definitely connect with the crowd unlike most divas.

what pleased me the most about the divas action this week is that
    1) they got a decent amount of air time this week..over 10 min!
    2) all of the people involved in the match (mickie, beth and natalya) were great competitors with real wrestling talent
    3) there was a promo after the match that established and perpetuated the feud between michelle and mickie
i loved how the crowd was into it, at least they were way more than any other divas match recently..I think what really did it for me was how much the crowd was into it..I understand that it is edited but still you could tell they were into it..we got a match a good storyline and a good return from maria and above all:
it made the divas seem important and like we could invest in their characters and story.

  • Kaledrina
    December 4, 2009 at 8:57 pm

that match was pretty average for me. if anything, i was expecting more from natalya and beth – all we really got were a few shoves and a forearm or two.

maria’s still as clumsy as ever, but it was nice to see her back i guess – at least now we hopefully won’t get another layla/mickie singles match for a while. although it’s disappointing she’s back at the same time as beth was so on the verge of a (in my eyes) much needed face turn.

hopefully they drop the shirts by next week.

    December 4, 2009 at 9:03 pm

I hope wwe shop.com sells those piggy james shirts. Perfect gift for this holiday season!!!

onto the match, All the divas did excellent and I have never seen the crowd so excited for a divas segment. I’m surprised at the amount of time they received this week. All woman did excellent. The glam slam was outstanding. I want to see more of beth and natayla. Overall this week was awesome for the smackdown divas. Piggy James seems to be losing some weight. Get it girl. Nice match this week better than raw’s.

  • Kaledrina
    December 4, 2009 at 9:05 pm

“Piggy James seems to be losing some weight.”

i don’t see it myself. but if she is, for her to look noticeably thinner less than a week from the last time we saw her, i hope she’s doing it healthily.

I think all in all considering the crap we’ve been issued the past few weeks… maybe months this week all the divas played their part well. We had a tag team match between RAW’s four top divas and four former champions which really started to build a feud and we had a triple threat dream match between three of the most talented women’s wrestlers followed by a continuation of a feud and a return of a fan favorite. I think during the Diva draft the creative team really thought hard about the placement of the women on Smackdown and they really pulled through. I think the RAW divas and Smackdown Divas really can’t be compared as the RAW feud is just beginning and the Smackdown feud has been going on for a while. With a little more attention I think RAW matches could pull through like this one and maybe we’ll see the dawn of a new era.

The match has a surprise for me. I think it would be a non credible win, but it was cool. But, once again I have to say this:

Please guys, push Natalya. She’s absolutely great and should have at least one opportunity as a champion. She’s not material to be only a valet.

  • Mikas
    December 4, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Great match. This match shows that if you give the divas more time, it greatly improves the pacing of the match, making the spots look much better. And we actually had a storyline going on this time, with a diva being allowed to talk! Let’s hope this will give the creative staff more faith in the divas.

And to those people who are STILL complaining that it wasnt a good match, or that it was boring (yes, its always the same people here): I suggest you stop watching WWE completely, because i doubt you will get to see a diva match which is better than this one any time soon.

  • Ed
    December 4, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Nattie eats the pin. What a shock… *rolls eyes*

The match was okay, but kind of slow. Too much stalling and posturing. I was expecting more from these 3 women. Would it have killed them to pick up the pace a little? There’s really no excuse for that much standing around when you only have 4 minutes to work. I don’t know. Maybe I was spoiled by Sarita vs. Hamada from iMPACT last night. This match looked like it was going in slow motion compared to that.

Still, it was nice to see the audience actually responding to a diva segment for a change. Mickie is one of the only divas that can actually get the live crowds to make some noise.

really good match (its a shame we didn’t get to see it all thanks to the commercial break)

maria’s return was good, that was a great slap

on a side not those ‘piggie James’ shirts were, crap Michelle’s was even ripped

great match all 3 divas did awesome
when Natalya and Beth were standing toe to toe that was just amazing X]
the ending was pretty nicely done too
sucks that Natalya got pinned though “/
that promo by Mickie was pretty good aswell
though Maria isn’t that great in the ring im glad shes back i guess haha
both smackdown and raw were entertaining this week

while Mickie and McCool feud for the title,it would be awesome to see a sub-feud between Beth and Nattie, allowing Beth to finally turn face.

  • Garouix
    December 4, 2009 at 11:20 pm

The match was good, but I wouldn’t say it was “great.” It was more of a character clash than a really physical match-up. I love all three of these women, especially Natalya, and I hope to see her finally get a push. Oh — and Maria’s back. I’m thrilled…lol.

  • B_Fizzle
    December 4, 2009 at 11:22 pm

Nice match this week. I loved seeing Beth and Natalya go toe to toe and I can’t wait to see it happen again someday without any interruptions. I forgot how good of a talker Mickie is but that was a good promo she cut. I literally laughed out loud when she pushed Michelle and she rolled backwards, spread eagle in the chair. I guess its also nice to see Maria is as spastic as ever, for the lulz of course.

  • ReyStyle94
    December 4, 2009 at 11:32 pm

How great is Beth? Especially at the GlamSlam bit where she turned slowly so that it wouldn’t seem fake so she could just move out of the way. She has great in-ring presence and I believe she carried that match, with Natalya also doing some of the heavy lifting. I still don’t believe Mickie is in tip top shape, her matches and in-ring movements are noticeably slower.

I would’ve liked to see Nat or Beth pick up the win but with the past few weeks building up McCool vs Mickie, you could see it from a mile away that Mickie would win but still, great Divas action overall for this week.

  • mykel1990
    December 4, 2009 at 11:32 pm

I thought it was a good match between the three divas, I wanna see more of Beth/Natalya in one-on-one matches in the future. I’m glad that the storyline has progressed an am totally excited to see Maria back again! this was one of the best ten minutes I’ve seen of WWE TV in a long time

  • Nerwal
    December 4, 2009 at 11:39 pm

The match was worked in typical WWE-style, with emphasis on storytelling, characters, and patient selling of whatever happens on the ring rather than performing a whole string of technical spots at a quick pace. Well, to each his/her own tastes, both approaches have some merit. The one thing I don’t understand in the booking is Mickie getting the win by pure opportunism. If for instance she had resisted in the sharpshooter for some time, in typical never-give up babyface fashion, she would have got much more credit for this win.

  • Robert
    December 4, 2009 at 11:44 pm

Yes Natayla may be close in size to Beth but has no where near the power the GlamaZon has. I don’t think they’re is really any Diva in the wwe that if Beth gets going can really touch Beth’s skill and Power.Remember Beth has been wrestling since High school.I know Natayla has to but she just doesn’t
have the pure power. And also you can see it in her shoulder’s arm’s traps, her lats underneath herarms, and the fact that she is very solid.YOu can tell by any one of the hundreds of photo’s that Beth is very strong/Natayla doesn’t quite have it in that dept. And how about how Beth just lifts them
in the air and holds them before puttting them on the mat for the pin. Ever her inverted suplex that she holds for over a minute takes muscle.

  • mr_socko
    December 5, 2009 at 12:05 am

thetommytommy – i don’t think we’ll ever see the dawn of a new era while the wwe continue to give no attention to the character development of the divas. You basically have a load of generic faces who just smile and wave to the audience (e.g melina, kelly kelly, gail kim, eve) and a load of similar heels. none of whom really have any personality. those are not the foundations for entering a successful era. however, at least the last couple of matches have been promising… gotta start somewhere i suppose! :D

The title of this Redux says it all.

The best divas action in years. I felt this match was great. Even though i would have like to see Beth and Natalya do some more moves to each other. It was so nice to see 3 of the top female wrestlers in the same ring , perfectly sync. The Nattie and Beth stare down was just….perfect i would love to see those two get in a fued together. I rather have Nattie as a face then Beth. I think Natalya would play the face role better in this fued.

I woudnt mind seeing these three in another triple threat match….the end was great too nice to see mickie on da mic. I think she is getting her spark bak. Hell even Maria did good and i never praise her…lol

I loved the match! Mickie’s parts were slightly lagging, but overall it was a good match. We seriously need a Beth vs. Natalya 1-on-1 match. :D Also loved the after-match bit. I actually liked Maria’s outfit this week, it’s a shame the awful hair ruined it lol. :/

I really liked this match. My three favorite divas in a triple threat match HELL YEAH!!! I enjoyed Mickie’s diving Thez Press to Beth, Natalya’s clothesline to Mickie, and Beth’s Glam Slam to Natalya. The promo was great, really added more to the Mickie/Michelle feud. LOL at Mickie saying she was going to dislodge Layla from Michelle’s butt.

Watching this match a second time, this time on TV with a commericial break, completely changed the feel of the match. With the break, it felt like two short matches, and the canned crowd noise was really annoying. For some reason, a lot of these recent Diva pairings that looked great on paper have been big let downs. The match was not bad by any means, just not nearly as good as it sounded.

  • Johnyfaction3
    December 5, 2009 at 2:34 am

Best match since Bragging Rights or Maybe since NOC. This was awesome althoug I think Beth is stronger than Natalya. This can be a good Fued while Mickie and Michelle are feuding…SD divas are used to have more than one fued at a time. This was incredible in my opinion….They got a good amount of ring time, They got a comercial break which is rare during a divas match! And All 3 can wresltle what else can you ask for! I am kind of glad Maria is back so we dont see the same match every week! The Glamslam was good!

    R.I.P Umaga!

  • Mr.Glamazon
    December 5, 2009 at 2:44 am

Wow…what a cool segment tonight. The match was exciting cause I felt all 3 had a chance to win to set up an interesting follow-up (I didn’t read the spoilers), and even though the match wasn’t super high paced it still had some great moments – and if nothing else made us want more from these Divas. As a Beth fan, I was on the edge of my seat during the confrontation with Natalya. I am disappointed Beth lost, but I feel like the Divas are moving in the right direction. I know some wanted Natayla to win, but just being in this match and holding her own is a good sign for her future. I liked how Mickie stole the win b/c it keeps Beth strong and sets up a Beth-Mickie-Michelle triple threat, maybe at the Royal Rumble?

As mentioned on this message board…if you didn’t like that segment then you really aren’t going to like anything the WWE does. I don’t understand the negativety. The girls got a chance to wrestle more than their normal time spot (even a commerical break?!?) and then continue their storylines…a perfect night!

  • Mace
    December 5, 2009 at 2:56 am

It was a good match but I gotta admit I was a little dissapointed..first of all going to an add break sucked =( secondly i felt as if it was watered down quite a bit..i mean imagine what beth and natalya could do without restriction. On the plus side it did tell a good story.

  • ebmich
    December 5, 2009 at 3:06 am

If I cared for Beth, Mickie or Nattie, I would wonder what was more painful: Mickie screeching in that interview or the fact that someone who just isn’t a good wrestler got more of a reaction than that match. The canned noises were annoying. I think the crowd was just happen it ended. There’s no way in hell they reaction so much during the match.

I thought it was average of a Divas match. Just them doing a bunch of moves and the match just got sloppier as it went on. The spots where they would transition one person to the next (i.e. Beth springboardin’ Mickie just so Nattie can roll her up) didn’t look too good. Like it or not die-hard Nattie fans, that’s not helping the case of “Why the *respected* Diva wrestlers should be pushed” by people who just don’t get it.

I love that Maria is back. She’s tacky and uncoordinated, but she’s a believeable face in tag matches. That was a great slap! I just really don’t know what to think of the irony that Mickie has been called a fat ass for a while now and they stick the skinniest Diva with her? I thought thin people hung out with heavier people to reassure they are thin. Not the other way around.

The more I think about it, the more I am liking the Layla character. She reminds me a lot of those ol’ cartoons with the two dogs. The big dog (Michelle) always walked around with her nose up in the air while the little dog (Layla) would yap away in the shadow of the big dog at the good guy. Which really works well for Layla, since she is tiny and has a great knack for doing little things that make her entertaining to me. I lol’ed at the face she made when Mickie came to the ring.

the staredown between beth & natalya, has me desperately hoping for a feud between these two. if giving the right set-up these two would put on one helluva match. natalya has been a mid-level diva for too long, considering her heritage and her ring abilities.

@ ebmich- “I think the crowd was just happen it ended. There’s no way in hell they reaction so much during the match.”

There is a video on youtube that a fan recorded of the match. The crowd was very vocal and into it.

AAAHHH I LOVED IT! Even the crowd seemed to get into it, something that’s pretty rare in Divas matches…
Everything about it kicked ass, the triple threat match itself… Mickie’s promo… Maria’s return. I said before I couldn’t exactly see Maria come out and ‘clean house’, but she came through. The whole thing was so well thought out (or so it came across)…

Beth vs Natalya soon, please WWE?
