WWE Axes Survivor Series PPV

WWE will not be promoting another Survivor Series pay per view, Vince McMahon revealed today in an investors conference call. The WWE Chairman called the concept ‘obsolete’ in light of falling buyrates in recent years.

The November pay per view will be rebranded beginning this year, putting an end to the 23 year long Thanksgiving tradition. The Survivor Series was considered one of the ‘big four’ along with the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania and SummerSlam.

The original concept saw teams compete in elimination matches and in the past two years, the tradition has been extended to the Divas.

Melina and Mickie James have the distinction of being the final sole survivors in a Divas traditional elimination match at Survivor Series.

Given the prestige of the concept, I’d love to see Night of Champions moved to November and become part of the ‘big four’.

It had its run, time to move on. Great decision on Vince’s part.

The concept was great, and still is. But thanks to terrible booking, and the same people always winning they ruined the concept. Sad to see it go, it was one of my favorite ppvs in the past.

The Survivor Series 1995 was great for womens wrestling. Alundra Blayze, Bertha Faye, Aja Kong, Lioness Asuka all in 1 match.

One of my favourite PPVs yet Elimination Matches aren’t all that original and could be used on any PPV really; it’s not really a unique selling point anymore with so many 6 Man Tags etc featured on shows meshing talent on a frequent basis.

Melanie, I think you made a great point about Night Of Champions, and I agree that it should become one of the Big4. Mania and Summerslam are there because of their longevity and the fact they split up the year so to speak, and then the Royal Rumble is unique due to it’s implications for Mania. Looking at this, Night of Champions would be the perfect replacement and guarantees 2 Diva matches on one of the biggest nights of the WWE Calendar. :)

    WHAT!!!

The buyrates have nothing to do with the ppv concept, it has to do with the WWE being LAME and having extremely boring storylines. Way to not take responsibility for the actual reasons ALL your ppv buyrates, except for wrestlemania, are going down EVERY year. Night of Champions is cool, but can never take Survivor Series place.

That pisses me off! How can you just stop doing one of the big 4?! Whats next? Summerslam?

NO WAY. I loved Survivor Series. The problem wasn’t the bloody PPV. It was the crappy booking. SS has great to promote feuds, alliances and betrayals.

I would love for them to bring back Taboo Tuesday/Cyber Sunday. It would let us decide on who would compete or not, giving us some power.

i love night of champions, its the only time we are guaranteed 2 Divas matches seeing as the concept is every title on the line, I’m sad to see SS go i always liked that it gave us the chance to see Divas on SD face Raw divas without going there, if used right it could have been a great way to start a rivalry or a way of choosing who could go to move to the oposit brand in the future

Beth was also the sole survivor in the 2008 match at SS.

I’m gutted. I adore the Diva Elimination Tag Matches we get. Guess it’s been replaced by Bragging Rights.

Survivor Series is my favorite PPV after WrestleMania, I’ll be sad to see it go. The diva elimination matches over the past few years have been great. :(

I loved Survivor Series. I liked the Diva’s elimination matches. I think they should add that to the Royal Rumble personally. I do think that Night of Champions would be a good PPV to move to November, and to become one of the “Big Four”. It’s already a great PPV because they have all the titles on the line. I say move it.

What a shame, I was always a fan of Survivor Series and it’s traditional elimination tag matches. =(

However I TOTALLY agree with your last point. Night of Champions has to be my 2nd favourite PPV, next to Wrestlemania. I really do hope they make that one of it’s 4 major PPVs now that Survivor Series is gone. =)

Sad about survior series….but the good thing is the two best Divas ever in wwe history are the last Diva sole Survivors. Melina & Mickie James the best ever! MnM

Survivor Series was one of my favorite PPVs, and imo one of the best, deserving to big amongst the big 4. Imo, I’d instead get rid of some of the throwaway gimmick ones or at least alternate between years. Perhaps if they had fewer PPVs people might regard them as a bigger deal. Maybe, maybe not.

Night of Champions shouldn’t be turned into one of the big four. Too many wrestlers would miss out on the PPV bonus payouts that come with it. Wrestlemania and Survivor Series were the two easiest to book every superstar/diva on the card, with battle royals and multi-tag matches. The replacement PPV needs to be flexible enough to accommodate the bulk of the roster, which Night of Champions can’t do.

Meh, I stopped giving a sh** about the SS after the Lita/Trish bloodbath in ’04.
