Congratulations to Layla who was crowned the new WWE Women’s Champion on tonight’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
Layla — full name Layla El — makes history by becoming the first British-born Diva to win championship gold in the WWE. She is also the first Diva Search winner to win the prestigious Women’s Championship.
El won the belt in a two-on-one handicap match when she teamed with Team Lay-Cool cohort, Michelle McCool against Beth Phoenix in the former champion’s hometown of Buffalo, New York.

I’m so happy for Layla! I just wish she could have gotten a more definitive win, with a good build-up and less confusion. Either way, at least it’s a fresh face.

for her I can remember when she was in
diva search I was pulling for her to win and she won.

They are really making a big deal out of this on WWE.com. Layla is number 16 on the Power25 by herself (and what appears to be a new photoshoot with that badly PS’d belt lol). And I chuckled that she is the Daily Diva for tomorrow.
But man, how low do you feel if you are John Morrison or Teddy Jr.? Layla is finally getting some credible when those two should’ve been near main eventers already. haha
Wow, I was pulling for her to win the Women’s Title belt and not the Divas, and man oh man am I happy she did! :D :D :D I LOVE this girl, and about the age thing. Victoria was around that age group when she won the belt, so ha! :P
i’m still quite nervous about her reign! it could easily end next week, or her and mccool could split and there’ll only be one real heel (rosa barely counts right now) but nevertheless congratulations to her :)

Dumb dumb dumb..Layla does not deserve this championship. Maybe the Diva’s Title but not the Women’s championship. I mean I like Layla mainly because of her personality and everything below the chin but her ring skills still leave something to be desired. But Layla winning instead of Michelle is a good thing. I’m so tired of Michelle…she’s becoming the 2000′s HHH of the Women’s championship.
Ehm why doesnt she deserve it? When Trish won her 1st title she wasnt the greatest wrestler either and look how far she came.

I agree with Traylon Noble. Layla did not nearly have enough momentum as a singles star for this to make sense. Right now she only has momentum as Michelle’s lackey. Yes, she is a great diva- charismatic, sexy, and entertaining- but she is no fighting champion. It does not make sense that Layla now sits in the same category as Lita, Trish Stratus, Jazz, Molly Holly, Ivory, Jacqueline, etc. And while diva fans may rejoice about this, at the end of the day, the general wide wrestling audience is only going to look at this move as another reason to not take women’s wrestling seriously… which in the end hurts all of our cause.
To me it looks like WWE is trying to use Vicky to replicate Edge’s heel run with Michelle (on top of doing a similar angle with Mr. McMahon/Drew McIntyre AT THE SAME TIME). It was cool the first time around, especially since both Vicky AND Edge generated heat. But this whole using Vicky’s power to change matches and decisions to give Michelle unfair advantages has been such a failure.
I like Michelle but she gets so little reaction, it’s embarrassing. Instead of hating Michelle, we end up hating the writers for force-feeding Michelle as the top heel. There is such a distinct separation between the boos directed at Vicky and the yawns towards Michelle. I applaud Michelle for always staying in character and pretending she gets heat even though the arena is quiet.
Layla’s character has been sort of like Santino, kind of like the heel comedy relief of LayCool, and I think even she gets a little more reaction that Michelle (a few laughs and a clap is all it takes). Like Santino, it’s bound to turn her face.
They need to knock Michelle down a spot or just give up with her heel run. She just doesn’t have the it factor with the crowd. At this point, I don’t even think her attacking John Cena would get her any heat.

im sorry but sure she isnt as great a wrestler as the likes of Jacqueline, Ivory, Jazz, Molly and Beth and Melina and Mickie…
but she is a far better wrestler then kat, debra, hervina and imo candice, eve, maryse and sable…i also believe Layla is a better wrestler then Trish in her fiirst 4 reigns…Trish was only really decent by mid 2004

I didn’t realise how much she deserved it until she acctually won it I mean she’s been training for 4 years with the WWE now ! And out of everyone that has been training for those 4 years alongside her no one has as good character progression as her.
For people saying that she doesnt fit in with the league of people to have held that belt, well debra and the kat held the belt heck even Ashley was considered for a title reign.
i do have a sinking feeling that the belt will be ripped off her next week but i hope not, they could really work this for a long time and i have the utmost faith in Layla as champion.

@DarkMaverick87 I completely understand what you are saying but the title at this point needed a fresh face and if there was any diva on that brand who hadn’t been champ yet and deserved to be it was Layla. Shure she’s not as good as Lita,Jazz,Molly,Beth,Melina,or Mickie in ring wise. But her charachter has really grown she actually can get a reaction from the crowd. And she is basically the backbone of Lay-Cool. Without her it most likely wouldn’t be that interesting. She also does lots of stuff off the camera that she doesn’t get recognition for. Don’t get me wrong Michelle is great herself but her character has a poor connection with the crowd. And if she fot the title it would be the 3rd time in under a year. It would only be making the title less important.
it would only be less important because the title has been held by the same people ever since Lita left.To name them would be easy: Mickie, Melina, Candice,Beth & Michelle are the only divas to have held over the course of 4 years. I can count them all on 1 hand and that’s how long it been since post trish era started.So basically saying a fresh face needed to be called up.
