Apologies for the late SmakDown Redux this week. Melanie is ill and was unable to write the column last night, and asked me to fill in.
Three days before WWE’s Money in the Bank pay per view, we have a mixed tag team match. Interesting. I suppose Creative thought that the fans have seen every mix of Tiffany/Kelly/Layla/Michelle possible, and decided to switch it up. Still trying to figure out their logic in Layla and Kelly’s partners, however. Tonight, we see Layla teaming with Trent Barreta (one half of the Dudebusters) to go against Kelly Kelly teaming with Chris Masters. Who will have the advantage heading into the PPV?
We fade back to find Layla already in the ring with Trent Barreta and Caylen Croft. Layla’s decked out in an outfit I’ve not seen before. It looks like a variation on her usual wrestling gear with red and purple. I’m….not sure if I like it or not. We’ll see. We get a recap of Kelly getting pounced upon last week by LayCool. Layla looks pleased as punch with herself and Michelle’s actions. Kelly’s music hits and out comes K2 with Chris Masters, being accompanied by Tiffany. Kelly’s in a bra top and shorts with a black and white striped pattern and blue trim. Cute! Reminiscent of the gangster Diva photoshoot not too long ago. I approve. Tiffany’s in a simple black dress and impossible knee high boots. I approve as well – knee high boots are a weakness of mine. The two blondes bump hips with Chris Masters then make their way to the ring. Layla tells Trent she’s got this, so we start off with Kelly vs Layla.
Right away Layla starts taunting her with the Smelly Kelly insult but Kelly’s having none of it tonight. She slaps the taste out of Layla’s mouth! She lands another smack (not as effective as the first), then grabs Layla’s hair and forces her over into a corner, smashing her head against the turnbuckle. K2 is on the warpath, perhaps giving our English Muffin a taste of what to expect at MITB. Kelly lands kick after kick, driving Layla down to her knees in the corner, screaming out her fustration and anger at one of the women who’s made her Smackdown life a living hell. The referee has to interfere and Kelly reluctantly backs off, still screaming in an effort to rile up the crowd.
Kelly goes for a handspring elbow but Layla jumps up and plants both feet into Kelly’s back, shoving her down hard. Rough spot! Layla goes for a pin but it’s only good for two. Layla’s talking smack as she grabs Kelly’s head but the blonde lands another solid slap to the face, getting some space inbetween the two for a moment. But as she gets to her feet, Layla lands a nice spinning back kick that sends K2 back to her knees. Gathering Kelly up, the co-Women’s Champion nails her with a hard backbreaker, then bends her backwards over her knee in a submission stretch. Both women are yelling but Kelly refuses to give up. All of the sudden…
The camera switches to the ramp – out comes Rosa Mendes, skipping rope towards the ring! What the h-e-double hockeysticks? Layla is confused, but what’s stranger is the Dudebusters reaction. Trent actually joins Caylen outside the ring and they proceed to spin the jump rope for Rosa! Striker starts singing a jump rope song that’s gone over my head, Josh makes a comment about double dutch, and my fellow Louisvillians in the crowd are befuddled. As am I. As is the referee. As is Layla. Who proceeds to scream her head off at the threesome. Taking advantage of the distraction, Chris Masters levels both Caylen and Trent with a clothesline and a shoulder tackle! Layla’s pissed but she turns around to be met by a kick to the mid-section. She doubles over and Kelly hits the K2 for the three count!
As Chris and Kelly celebrate in the ring, Rosa looks horrified. As Layla gets to her knees, she looks around and locks eyes with Rosa. Oh boy, if looks could kill…Rosa would be in Cave Hill Cemetary as we speak. She points a finger at the hapless Miss Mendes, who gathers her jump rope….and skips rope to the back as quickly as she can. Fade out on Layla, still in the ring, looking confused and angry.
Have we just witnessed a precursor to this Sunday’s Women’s Championship match? Or, much like Communism, is this win simply a red herring? I’m certain LayCool will have tricks up their sleeve in order to keep the belt around Layla’s lovely waist. Will those tricks include bringing in a certain Smackdown consultant? Or will the determination of Kelly (sure to be accompanied by her BFF, Tiffany) be enough to overcome the odds? One way or another, we’ll find out on Sunday.

Not a good way to make any last build to a title match. I just don’t understand the point of the mixed tag match. We showed have just had a promo or something. I guessing maybe Rosa correctly costs KK the title at MITB. But even then that still wouldn’t make sense since LayCool has been making fun of Rosa all this time and she still wants to be in their group.

i really found the set up odd, it wasn’t really a tag match, it was more of a singles match, Kelly/w Chris masters & Tiffany VS Layla /w whoever those guys were
Rosa’s interruption did make me laugh, then i was like “why is she there?” but my first thought when i saw Layla was “where is MCcool”

So Rosa is Smackdowns version of Jillian. Jillan sings and Rosa does exercise rutines…Well Layla looked good the match was kinda crappy judging on the fact that these girls wrestle each other this Sunday. I would of prefered The Barbie’s vs. Laycool. Man is Rosa funny!

I thought Smackdown was actually ok this week. On paper, Rosa coming down to the ring like that would have been confusing and WTF? and in real life, thanks to the great commentary from Matt and Todd (not Josh, but I forgive you for that mistake Linda… I mean Jennifer! :-P), the segment was not confusing, just WTF haha.
Let’s hope Layla keeps the belt come Sunday.

Any kayfabe reason why Layla gets squashed like a spider by an arachnophobic man by Kelly but Michelle barely gets rolled up? I know nepotism is a part of wrestling, but I wanna know what good does that booking do for anyone.
The best part of this segment was when Layla made one of the guys hold her belt so she can use it as a mirror.. But then the guy likes what he sees and Layla motions “No, not you! I need to use it!” It is little things like that make me wish Layla really was booked like a champ. haha
I actually liked this segment because I’m a fan of both Layla and The Dudebusters. Even though this match was random it made sense. I think that it will actually be Rosa who helps Layla retain the title at MITB to fix the problem she made here. As far as the Dudebusters jumping roping, that made perfect sense also. If anyone follows the Dudebusters ( I’m assuming just me), then you’ll know that they are your typical 20 something childish guys that play video games and bump fist all day, so them jumping roping isn’t as random as you think. My only problem is that Layla is seen as a weak champion that can easily be beaten. It’s already bad that Kelly constantly beat her ass in ECW each week.
Hopefully, Melanie feels better soon. I won’t complain about a double dose of Jennifer, though! Great redux, girl. I am so not feeling this Smelly Kelly thing. Just because it rhymes, doesn’t mean its clever! Compared to the Piggie James storyline, this is just embarrasing. As uncomfortable as the Piggie James storyline was, it brought out the best in all involved: Mickie, Michelle, Layla, Beth, even Maria. Time, effort and attention was given to that feud. It wasn’t just about a title, it was far more personal. This fued is just a mess. Rosa’s involvment at the end, as amusing as it was, was just as random and pointless as this match. For once, I’m more interested in the going-ons of RAW. EPIC FAIL by SmackDown!
Lol Rosa is hilarious. I’m glad they gave her something to do as I’ve always been a fan of hers. I know her ditzy chick gimmick is rehashed and slight, but atleast its something. I wonder why they didn’t put this much effort(Not that its a whole lot of effort come to think of it)into Katie Lea instead of letting her go. Honestly, that bugs the hell outta me since I was really hoping Katie would do good things, and eventually become Champion. Anyway, go Kelly! Lol
The match was fun, although yeah, it wasn’t so much a mixed tag match as it was a singles match w/valets. Layla and Kelly work well together.
Rosa was random, but I agree with whoever said Striker and even Todd made it work…if only Cole and King put this much effort in. And the reactions of Layla, Rosa and even the Dudebusters worked as well.

I believe Michelle is on her honeymoon. The match wasn’t bad, just too much randomness that Todd and Matt had to piece together for the audience. I think this one of those spots that looked much better on paper.
Sad thing is, RAW isn’t better. Alicia vs Eve is being continued on such a flimsy excuse that I really just want to see Alicia knock the hell out of Eve and move on.
So the best diva feud right now is… Jillian (and Maryse???) vs the Bellas. This feud has so many pros. Jillian gets to flex her comedic muscle and wrestle, the Bellas get to wrestle an experience veteran who can make lots of things look good, and if Maryse gets involves it allows her to wrestle but not wrestle on RAW.

Great write up Jennifer. I thought the match was ok, however I wish Layla got the win. I’m glad to see that Rosa got her skip on. I just excited that the jump rope got some airtime. Lol. It’s going to be interesting on Sunday I hope Layla and Alicia retain their belts.
Am I the only one that thought Rosa facially looked weird? The best way I can describe it is that she looked less ethnic. He hair was blonder and her face washed out. Besides the exercise is part of her gimmick to become white?
I liked this weeks match and I loved Rosa she is so funny and the way she skipped away cracked me up. Tiffany looked hot and I think Rosa will have something to do with the title match on Sunday. KELLY FOR THE WIN!
What a strange segment, tonight! They seem determined to present Layla as being as weak a champion as possible. The Dudebusters and Rosa were… surreal, to say the least O.O
Is Rosa stupid? I really don’t like how Smackdown has been booking Layla as champion. She needs to beat Kelly and look good while doing it or there’s really no hope for her at this point. I was really killing to see Michelle vs Tiffany again and see Michelle take out Tiffany for this Sunday’s match. Too bad she’s off on her honeymoon. >.<

I know the lord and I will pray that she wins it so I can see people like you react to the roaring crowd and her beautiful smile glowing through the whole arena :D It’s going to be like the old spice guy when he dies XD If you seen the video you know what I’m talking about ;)
I didn’t like Layla’s outfit. It looked too much like Victoria/Tara’s gear. Anyway, it’s gonna be interesting to see where this goes.

i dont but i do kinda want kelly to win simply for the surprise factor. also, they keep emphasizing that this is her first title shot (even though it isn’t) so it does feel sort of more likely because of that.
i don’t think layla’s reign has done much for the title. it has been reduced to pretty much a shared accessory between her and mccool.. they either need to do something concerning the supposed “co championship” thing.. or give it to kelly and let her run with it. whatever happens, we’re still gonna get the same sequence of matches we’ve already had the past two months, just with a diferent no.1 contender.

Well idk I thought they were going to debut Aj lee as a face. So if Kelly is champ she would have to be heel unless she goes to raw which would ruin her career.
@imj1995 it was said that the diva who is going to debut (which is probally AJ Lee but hasnt been confirmed) is goin to SD! and if it is AJ then she’ll be a heel. because if im not mistaken didnt AJ and Melina fight when Melina was at FCW the other day
Oh ok but didn’t Alicia wrestle as a face on ecw and a heel on fcw? Hopefully we get a new face not heel because she would just be put in the back seat because Laycool are SD’s top heels.

@imj1995 she manged DJ Gabriel in ECW i think WWE tried to make them faces but i dont think they succeded if i rember right as i didnt last long because she got moved to SD! in the draft as a heel. so it really depends on how you look at it
@boi213 yes they usaully do the only time there are 2 heel champs is when all the champs are heels but since that aint the case i see one switching hands and i dont think Eve will get the title back so soon and plus i want Kelly to win.

The mixed tag-team match has a point SOMETIMES, like, eg; if Maryse and DiBiase were to team up. It has a point. But I dislike these random mixed tag matches, although the segment was very enjoyable. And I don’t mean to be random but @boi213, you’re scarily exactly like me.
all i know is 1 belt will change this sunday either divas or womens but kelly and tiffany can become the next co-champions (mayb)

she is like a candice but candice was more believable but yet kelly has had more backstage promos candice never really got that in her build up….. but i still cant picture her winning the womens title……unless you here “excuse me excuse me”
