Former WCW Nitro Girl, Spice (real name Melissa Bellin) was the latest special guest on Monday Night Mayhem, and commented on the possibility of a Nitro Girls reunion at WrestleMania 27 next year. Of course, ‘Mania will take place in Atlanta, the old stomping ground of WCW.
She says:
The likelihood of a complete Nitro Girls reunion at WrestleMania XXVII in Atlanta (the home of WCW) and whether or not she could actually see that taking place: “It would make phenomenal sense. A lot of are still pretty accessible to the area. We would all be completely open to it. Two years ago, we did a reunion for Jimmy Hart down in Orlando. Five of us got together, did a choreographed routine in the ring, and the fans loved it, and it was a ton of fun. So if there is interest from the fans, I think it would be great.”
Melissa also spoke on the popularity of the Nitro Girls and how she doesn’t feel the concept could have lasted longer:
What she liked and/or disliked about the direction of the Nitro Girls and the transition of being just dancers to in-ring performers & valets: “I think it was a shame because it was such a popular concept. I think it was an element that’s really been missed. We still hear it from the fans all the time on Facebook. People reach out to us all the time and say ‘Man, we really missed the Nitro Girls.’ When the group was created, Eric Bischoff was saying that valets were a thing of the past and that they wanted to move things in the right direction. I always remember that opening night. The response was tremendous, and it continues 13 years later. On one hand, I think it was just wrestling on a whole was remise to not continue with that concept in some form or fashion, because the fans really enjoyed it. Then at the end of the day, everything changes. I think they could have still differentiated themselves, but I think the problem WCW made is that they tried to be like the competition. When they tried to play the same game as WWE, they couldn’t hang, because Turner was a whole different media outlet, and we had a lot of restrictions.”

dancers in wwe would get boo’ed besides layla & eve..plus aint they all old lol.
No offense, but, is she serious?!
Yes, she is serious. Back then, the girls were really popular. I went to a lot of WCW shows live back then & people really liked them. They were only in there for a short time, they didn’t take anything away from the show. WCW made an effort in the beginning to give them a backstary. And a lot of people made fansites for the girls. It’s wasn’t like it is now, where as soon as someone signs with WWE 10 fansites pop up, Fansites weren’t common at all and for them to have people make the effort shows they were pretty popular.
I can understand that they were once very popular, but remember, there were not many girls at that time, so any girl would get a great reaction. And also, it’s a different time, I’d bet anything that these girls would get booed or no reaction at all if they “performed” on WrestleMania next year.
Remember the Extreme Exposé fiasco, that being Layla raving in the ring like she’s having a fit while Brooke shaked her buns and Kelly stood there looking confused. It’s not what people want to see anymore, it’s done, it’s past.
Sorry to burst some bubbles, but there’s just no chance that these girls would have any kind of success nowadays. If they end up performing on WM I’d bet it would be some ridiculous segment with Santino Marella and/or Vladimir Kozlov. somewhat involved…
if it wasn’t for the nitro girls we wouldn’t have stacy, sharmell or one of my all-time favourites, kimberly.. they were totally relevant at the time, but a reunion on wrestlemania won’t happen. i’d love it for the nostalgia, but i doubt the majority of wwe’s target audience even know/remember who they are.
You aren’t bursting my bubble. I wasn’t saying they’d get a huge reaction now, I was saying they were very popular back then. You didn’t really state which part you were asking if she was serious about. I don’t think they would be at Wrestlemania, but if someone outside of WWE had some of them come in for a signing that weekend they’d do well. I agree completely with Kaledrina.
Doesn’t Lita live in Atlanta, Georgia?
I would love to see, the Nitro Girls return for one last dance, there were very very popular, and it would be kind of kool, and i would love to see at WCW One night Stand haha
The only reason Extreme Expose failed is because only Layla can actually dance, there was no way she could carry the other two, It has nothing to do with the change in times as far as i see it, Talent is something that shines through no matter the decade or audience. If you’re trying to force wooden, dull, uncoordinated women gyrating around down our collective throats and sell it as entertainment it is going to bomb big time.
A reunion WOULD be cool for WM…but to go on after that…you’d have to re-invent
the concept for a 2010 audience and i think they’d be a RAW Attraction cos that’s more entertainment and knowing WWE,they would have rebecca Higgenbotton(HBK’s
wife) do some form of angle with it….IMO
I wouldn’t be opposed to it. A lot of great talents came from the Nitro Girls, so I don’t think fans’ memories are that bad that no one would know who the NGs were/are. WM being in Atlanta, they’re supposedly doing a WCW-themed HOF so this would tie in with it. Maybe have it at the beginning of the actual WM show to open it.
And ar1ie: No. All of them were born in the 1970′s. Thats a far cry from being ‘old.’
I wouldn’t mind a little tribute to the NItro Girls next year. If a flash in the pan like Goldberg can headline the hall of fame, you can bring out the girls one more time. Even if it’s just an excuse to see Kimberly Page one more time. She is one of the sexiest women ever in wrestling, second only to Trish IMO. About the only thing about DDP that I liked :)
I could see Lita being involved with next year’s festivities, she lives in Atlanta. But you have to wonder if she really wants anything to do with WWE anymore. It’s not like either side has much regard for the other.
OMGOSH i loved the nitro girls can still name them..! Chae, Spice, Whisper (Shawn Michaels wife), Fyre, A.C Jazz, Kimberly…..well that’s the only ones that were around when I started watching WCW. Not too familiar with Storm and Skye etc…
But idk how it’ll work in WWE, WCW was such a long time ago, it’s a totally different generation of fans now….maybe if they do a small pre-show thing (but they’ll have to do a video package on the nitro girls to re-introduce them to new crowds) that would be cool!
@art1e says the person with Tori as your gravatar…! So what if they’re older, I don’t hear people complain about Victoria/Tara or Mickie or even LAYLA who are all over 30.
I would love to see the nitro girls one last time and I don’t think they’re to old most of them are about Torrie,Trish and Lita’s age and the worst I think they’ll get is just no reaction.
