This week’s Friday Night SmackDown boasted a big Women’s Championship match between Layla and Tiffany. When spoilers hit the web this past Tuesday of a swerve, well quite frankly, it should have come as no surprise. WWE has a habit of advertising one thing and delivering another. Instead, we get Michelle McCool defending the Women’s Title against Tiffany.
In a less than 8-minute segment, it sure is funny just how much they crammed in… Watch below:
We open with the challenger walking down the corridor with her Blondetourage teammate, Kelly Kelly. They bump into Rosa Mendes and exchange hellos, despite Kelly facing Rosa in the ring a few weeks ago. So Rosa is a babyface now? Whatever. I don’t get these random workout scenes. Just put out a workout DVD or axe her. Seriously. What’s the point anymore?
Lay-Cool are out first to the ring and it should probably be a big, glaring neon sign that things aren’t going to be as they seem when Michelle, too, is in ring gear despite Layla being the advertised combatant.
Vickie Guerrero comes out and announces as co-Women’s Champions, it will be Michelle defending the belt tonight as Tiffany’s chances of winning hit rock bottom. In kayfabe, it seems plausible for Tiffany to defeat Layla to become champion but Michelle? The commentators play up that Michelle is a beast in the ring and this match just got very one sided.
Michelle, not taking Tiffany at all seriously, does a little workout of her own in the ring. Is this a recurring trend on SmackDown or what? I really hope this is all just build up to announcing a Divas workout DVD… Anyway, Michelle is doing press ups, paying no mind to her challenger. However, as she sits up, the ballsy Tiffany hits her with a front dropkick. Great way to start the match on Tiffany’s part!
Tiffany wastes little time, kneeing Michelle in the gut and then hitting her with forearms into the corner. Tiff then begins stomping a mudhole, as old JR would say, in the corner. Tiffany tries to pick up Michelle but gets pushed back. Tiffany then picks her up and perches her on the top rope.
Tiffany and Michelle exchange blows as Tiff climbs the ropes to join Michelle. This spot looked a little sluggish and it looked like it took too long for them to get into superplex formation. There’s a few half-hearted blows exchanged to keep the heat alive, but it all pays off in the end as Tiffany hits a superplex — albeit not a great one — on Michelle. Wow! When was the last time a Diva put a superplex in her arsenal? Great spot, despite less than perfect execution.
The challenger goes for the pin, and nearly gets it but McCool kicks out. Tiffany whips herself off the ropes but Layla from the outside grabs her foot. Kelly now interjects, hitting Layla with forearms before being shoved into the barricade. As Layla turns around, Tiffany hits her with a nice dropkick through the bottom ropes and screams, “Stay down!”
Tiffany climbs the ropes again, going up on top but a recovered Michelle hits her and she lands in an awkward position on the top turnbuckle. McCool has her in perfect position for the Faith Breaker and it’s all over. Lay-Cool retain.
Cutting their celebration short, GM Teddy Long appears on the titantron telling Lay-Cool that there’s only room for one Women’s Champion on SmackDown. They need to decide who wears the belt or next week, he’ll do it for them!
What an action packed 7 and a half minutes. We got all of the Divas crammed in there and even Vickie and Teddy! All to the detriment of the match, however.
There were like 3 spots in total in this match. For a Women’s Championship bout it wasn’t long at all. It seems over the past two months or so, the matches on SmackDown are getting shorter and shorter. What gives? There was a time when 5-6 minute matches were the norm on SmackDown, and I can even recall a great, long bout that lasted even longer between Michelle McCool and Mickie James a week before the latter’s release.
That said, I thought this match had its moments, for sure. Tiffany, once again, in my opinion, proved to be a shining star. She comes out as a peppy cheerleader but when she steps in the ring, she’s all business — she’s often underestimated by her opponents, but she gives as good as she gets. The way she kicked off the match, with the low dropkick was great. I was also impressed by the fact she did the superplex. Her moveset is very unusual for a Diva, it’s more manly. I like it. She’s a power-lifter and she’s able to pull off these moves [the superplex needs a little more work though], so more power to her. I think she could really establish herself as a more feminine, girly Beth Phoenix-esque type. She has this Beth-esque stature and in the ring, she’s hard going. But when you see her come out and the way she greets the fans, she’s more of a Kelly Kelly. I see a real mix of the two in her and you know what? It’s kind of unique. Especially when so few Divas these days have a distinguishable character trait. She, in my opinion, is breaking out of the mould of being a generic babyface and has a quality there that if amplified, could be the basis of her own gimmick and character.
As for there only being one Women’s Champion… it seems like a random time to do it. But then again, there hasn’t been much storyline in the past couple of weeks. Perhaps this will be the start of a real storyline on SmackDown? Will Lay-Cool now feud over the belt? Will Layla turn face? It seems like it. From what I read, AJ Lee is coming onto SmackDown as a heel, perhaps they have estimated that Layla will turn face? It’s going to be interesting and exciting to see where SmackDown goes next due to this latest development. I think, and hope, we have a real storyline on our hands now.
In all, I thought this week’s SmackDown was okay. I wish the match was longer. But I was impressed with what I saw from Tiffany and I enjoyed the storyline introduction for next week.
PS: Matt Striker working in ‘Totes McGotes’ into his commentary = +1.

I liked the SUperples by Tiffany.
Really becoming a fan of hers
I think the superplex was perfect and it had really good build up to the move. It was a BIG moment and Tiffany executed it perfectly and Michelle sold it perfecly. I din’t read the spoilers (i usually don’t) and I was rooting for Tiffany and when she almost won I went nuts! I love Tiffany everything about her is great she IS the future of the WWE and will make a great champ someday. Loved Rosa’s squats and she seems face now but Melanie I don’t think you should say someone should get fired that’s just wrong. And AJ Lee will be heel if Layla turns face she must be. Any way LOVE YOU TIFFANY!! :D <3

Justin0422 — I didn’t mean that I think Rosa should be fired or that I want Rosa fired. I meant that they are not even using her, except these pointless skits… why are they keeping her around? It doesn’t seem like they know what to do with her at all.
The match was pretty good… did wish it was longer too…
I really can’t wait for Laycool to break up.. I think theyre really funny (Piggy James, GlaMANzon, Smelly kelly, Skirt Tiffany) but Im getting tired of their tricks
I would totally buy a diva’s workout dvd if it included Beth Phoenix *wink*.
As far as the match, it wasn’t long but it wasn’t so bad. I agree with Tiffany as she really has impressed me as well. Any diva that isn’t Beth or Natalya doing a surplex is unique for a diva. Plus Tiffany is not a complete stick as she has some meat on her which I like. I do think that the turnbuckle spot was a little weak as they took a long time to finally hit the superplex.
As far as the title situation, it just shows me that Beth is really close to coming back. I always felt that as soon as she was ready to come back, LayCool will break up. At Summerslam, I see Layla and Michelle having a match to determine the champion and MIchelle will win the title by screwing Layla. This will lead to a Layla face turn and Beth will return to continue her feud with Michelle. I hope this time we see just a one on one match between the two and not a silly, sexist gimmick match because I think they can have worthy MOTY for mainstream women’s wrestling if given at least 8 minutes.
i think rosa is borderline face right now.. she had a high five moment with big show a week or so ago which for me solidified a face turn.. i do have a different view on her segments, though. i think it’s great that they’re giving her screen time, i also think it’s good that they’re developing a character/gimmick with her, as lack of character is something we complain about a lot when it comes to the divas.
i wasn’t keen on how happy layla was to not be defending her title (co-champs or not). overall, this whole storyline has really plummeted the title’s prestige to new depths for me. although, let’s face it, it’s not been that credible a belt in a long while. i’ve found of late, that the action on the outside of the ring (this week being kelly/layla) is always more exciting than the action in the ring.. but they’re really starting to overdo it with the outside interference.
“When was the last time a Diva put a superplex in her arsenal?”
Last time I saw a Diva do a superplex was when Gail Kim did it Jillian Hall on Superstars which was way better.
So Rosa Mendes is a face I guess!
This whole segment was longer than RAW’s Divas segment.
And when they showed Kelly Kelly look up after Tiffany lost she kinda looked like Ashley Tisdale from The Disney Channel.
And I don’t think it is always about the match length I look at the whole segment. 8 minuites is a good time for a segment and the match had good time. I look at it how long we get to see the divas for :D
I think…. WWE is trying to get ROSA to do this work out stuff… and when she’s back in the ring.. she’ll be a strong competetor all of a sudden.. And I hope a DIVA TRADE HAPPENS SOON
With laycool- maybe WWE is gonna make them argue over the title for a couple of weeks.. and Michelle brings in AJ as a new member… and Layla gets mad cause Michelle doesnt tell her… so Layla will split and feud over mIchelle and AJ
Rosa should remain HEEL and Layla should become FACE
FACE: kELLY, Tiffany, Layla (UNDERDOGS)
HEEL: mICHELLE, AJ, rosa
I thought the match had the potential to be good, and it was, just needed more time to actually develop into a solid match. The superplex at the beginning just goes to show that Tiffany isn’t the average babyface, and she has come strives to improve every time we see her.
I have a opinion on the superplex spot though; I didn’t find it to be sluggish or dragging on, it worked because it was nearly the beginning of the match so Michelle wasn’t that tired which made them slug it out to get to the top. It was a cool spot and you don’t see those too often.
I liked the outside interference because it didn’t take a way from the match, it just blended well. I also love how Michelle just finds new ways to hit her finisher, it catches you by surprise. Can’t wait to see how this develops in the upcoming weeks.
Divas Workout DVD xD
I dont think AJ Lee will be a new member of Laycool I mean they are called Lay-Cool for a reason there is no AJ Lee there. And plus Michelle is really tall compared to AJ Lee so they might have a few insults for her.
If Layla turns face and maybe if AJ Lee joins Michelle McCool they could be Lee-Cool!
@Melanie maybe they are building her up for something like have her train for a while them be a kick ass wrestler and maybe have her win the women’s championship? I like that idea for Rosa this whole gimmik has to have a purpose and maybe she will be the nw competitor for Layla’s (or michelles) womens championship
One thign that bothered me is that Todd said Tiffany has beaten Layla one on one before. She never has.
I liked this match, despite being short as hell it started to build a storyline beyond petty school yard insults – the destruction of Laycool. I’m begging the wrestling God’s for a extreme Layla push/face turn with her beating Michelle. That would be sooooo sooooo good.
I hope Layla keeps the belt. It would be for the best. She can move on and be a star in her own right, and Michelle McTaker can spend more time with her undead husband in a vegetative state. Then move Gail Kim to Smackdown and let her work some matches with Layla.
Lee-Cool would be nice…. after Layla leave Lay-cool
I got annoyed at Todd for saying Tiffnay has beaten Layla and Michelle in singles matches.. but she hasnt won a match in wwe… except for that 16 diva tag match before WRESTLEMAINA 25….
I thought everything came off well. I liked Tiffany and love the fact she does moves not many divas do. I can see her being something really special if she keeps going. I really missed hearing”Excuse Me”. it was nice. I don’t complain about Kelly much but I don’t like how she no sold the barricade spot. It’s like she forgot she was suppose to be hurt.
I don’t feel a Lay-Cool break up coming up, with each segment their tension is not at each other their tension is at Teddy Long. With this segment, they said ‘No you can’t do that, we’re BEST FRIENDS’. it wasn’t like they were fighting over the belt, more like fighting against Teddy.
@fanboy she technically beat michelle in a DQ in her in-ring debut on SD.
and she beat laycool in tag team matches with beth pheonix.
but she has never won a one-on-one match cleanly against neither member of laycool.
Tiffany and Michelle have so much chemistry together. Michelle can clique w/ any wwe diva except kelly kelly and the bella twins. She has alot of chemistry with gail, maryse, beth, melina and tiffany. The 3 matches tiffany and michelle had together its been outstanding but this one was in my opinion the best but it always seems that tiffany dominates the beginning then michelle does the rest and gets the pin. The more i see tiffany in the ring the more i see potential in her to be the next “trish startus” she just has to grow out of the skirts and get a more serious look if she wants to be taken more on the serious note but other than that shes a great competitor she has a personality that fits her well, she can be aggressive and skilled. Lets just hope she never goes to RAW because every diva that goes to RAW will turn out to be horrible its like a curse. I see michelle against layla at night of champions with michelle walking out as champion.
Well last year they had 2 different kinds of diva trades. The first one was the big 15 summer block in which gail and alicia came to RAW and forgot who else. The second one was the one in which occured because of nancy o’dell. So im guessing they will have a trade somehow and it could be anytime this year i guess in october. But we cant see another 9 months with the same matches and feud so they’re going to end up switching maybe at least a total of 4 divas.
I meant i see michelle vs layla vs kelly vs tiffany at SummerSlam 2010 and i think that the big summer block trade will occur before or after summerslam =l
WHY DO PEOPLE HATE SKIRTS I LOVE TIFFANYS SKIRTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ugh, they weren’t arguing, they were yelling at Teddy…dum spoilers. I loved that match and I though the superplex was awesome and Michelle waiting til the very last fraction of a second she could to kick out was nerve-racking even though I read the spoilers lol. I wish it could’ve been longer because it was really good for not being super long. I guess we need to see what happens after next week to see if a Laycool breakup is near but I don’t think it is :)
PS: I’m glad Vickie finally did something for them again
oh, and I liked how during one of the guys matches Matt Striker got all excited and he’s like “THIS IS WHAT MEN DO!” and Todd quietly added, “and Divas”. :)
Life Partners! Really Matt Striker? Eric and Steven are going to have a field-day with that one on Diva Soup.
Calm down, everyone has an opinion on what the women wear. Some people like skirts, some don’t. It’s personal preference.
The match was short but really good! I do like the fact that Tiffany incorporates moves that accent her power lifter past. It’s unusual and makes her stand out. I didn’t really think she’d win, but I can definitely see her becoming a champ in the future. Kudos to all five women & Teddy for an excellent segment!
And Vickie looked fantastic tonight. Her hair, makeup, outfit and those killer shoes. The woman is working it!
I was very surprised that match only lasted 2.5 minutes, given the slow pace.
“SKIRT TIFFANY”?! Lol.
How does Tiffany go from nice executive business outfits to cheap cheerleader costumes? She can’t be taken as a serious contender wearing that. She looks like a local indy jobber Beth squashes.
Well that lived up to my expectations and then some, even though it was a short match. You’d think that given the time it would have been a squash match but both ladies came over as strong competitors. The superplex was a rather slow on the setup, probably just a matter of practice, any diva that can pull off that move, or take it, is a spot above the rest.
Tiffany really is on the way to becoming a cheery “Glamazon-lite” and it works well for her. She has the basics pretty much down, as demonstrated in this match, now she needs to add a little move variety to her offence for the complete package.
As for LayCool, I can’t wait to see how this plays out. I’m guessing we’ll see a break-up title match at the next ppv. Michelle will more than likely take the title, she is certainly the most powerful active diva in WWE at the moment, but what the hell; C’mon Layla! =D
Layla wont turn face I dont think? They werent even arguing but according to the spoilers they were. If Layla turns face then theres 4 faces and 2 heels. When AJ Lee Debuts Lay-Lee-Cool, pahaaa. lol. And Rosa Joins the Blondterouge or however you spell it, lol. 3 on 3 :)
Kelly Kelly, Tiffany & Rosa Mendes vs Layla, Michelle Mccool & AJ Lee. ;)
some people are forgetting that Laycool are still mentoring Kaval on NXT,one of the favourite to win the show…and on NXT Laycool are really watchble and torebleit would be unlogical to start making them arguing now….and besides by the spoilers we all could think that they were arguing with eachother but we saw instead they arguing against Teddy making them choosing.
AJ needs to come to SD but as a face, not a heel.
good match short but sweet! tiff is 100x better than kelly i say it for a reason. tiff is like an eve torres when eve first started. shes shaping up to be a good competitior, give her a few more months or like a year and she will be fab! shes improving nicely. and michelle was great in this match, she played her heel well and she hit her faithbreaker in suprise and in a unique way. but i just wish wwe take michelle more seriously like i mean the “laycool” is sorta hurting michelles image right now like before when she was michelle “mcCruel” she was like a female version of RKO and she was really dominant, she still is dominant but pple dont see her a dominant they see her childish!
i think laycool will break up soon, maybe after NXT is over, and i think michelle should go back to being “mcCruel” and dominate like she used to i loved her in this era!
as for layla she does needs to go solo, we need to see what she can actually do, without michelles help, im not being mean but layla was able to show what shes got because of her partnership with michelle, she got paired up with a top diva in wwe and it really helped her improve.
but tbh they may not break up yet, reason being cos next week michelle hands her title over but they also break the other belt, but they’re happy about it?
“i just wish wwe take michelle more seriously like i mean the “laycool” is sorta hurting michelles image right now like before when she was michelle “mcCruel” she was like a female version of RKO and she was really dominant, she still is dominant but pple dont see her a dominant they see her childish!”
i agree. i’ve never been a huge fan of michelle, but she was definitely at her best during those days.
i don’t know, some people seem to prefer michelle and layla as walking jokes of a stereotype. me? i want them to be taken seriously for a change.
Tiffany’s star continues to rise!
I absolutely love her, more and more each time I see her. The superplex, the feisty dropkick at the start of the match and yelling “stay down!” at Layla all had me completely marking out for her. Reminiscent of the way Mickie stood up to Michelle, dropping down to do push-ups along with her.
If Tiffany keeps going like this, she’ll be one of the most impressive Divas in the WWE by Wrestlemania. I just pray she keeps putting as much work as she clearly has been lately, but that she works on the basics (her kicks on Michelle in the corner looked a bit weak) rather than taking the Eve Torres route of learning fifty new moves each week and having a completely different moveset, or even finisher, each time she wrestles.
i think the match was good, i can’t believe Tiffany carried Michelle around then put her on the turnbuckle and did a superplex that was cool, and Tiffany is a lot stronger then i thought she was. i think that Rosa is definitely Face now, wishing Tiffany Good luck isn’t very heel
I’m interested to see what happens with the Lay-cool championship angle
i just hope they don’t split yet :/
OH, forgot to mention…..
SERENA! Totally fierce last night, stomping all over Show’s hand with her massive heels. Awesome :D
this will last long because they wont split them up until nxt’s is over!
i love the nicknamnes they give people
maria – underfeed redhead
mickie- piggie james
beth – glamanzon
kelly – smelly kelly
tiffany – skirt tiffany
haha
tif is my no.1 diva nowadays so i love watching her in the ring and this match -despite being short- was very good
a diva doin superplex..its something i love and wanna see tif got the mix that i love..girly but tough she should keep it like that
the superplex spot…i think mccool didnt belive that tif was goin to actually do it thts why they took so long it looked strange!!
This weeks SD! was great I thought, and even though the match was short, I liked it much more than RAW’s and Impact’s and it’s because there is something about Kelly and Tiffany that makes you get behind them and want them to do well, even if (in Kelly’s case), they aren’t the best wrestling wise. Tiffany’s superplex wasn’t as good as Gail or Jillian’s was in their Superstars match a few months ago, but still, she executed it quite well and it’s great to see her trying moves like that.
Skirt Tiffany really does impress me everytime I see her in the ring that girl deserves a good push…
Anyway “REAL TALK” as much as I love Laycool and I wouldn’t want them to split, if, and I seriously mean IF they did ever split… Would this mean Layla would have her old theme back? (I do hope so, I miss ‘Nasty Girl’)
Oh and to all you people out there… Layla face! ARE YOU SERIOUS! she rocks my world as a heel. It just wouldn’t be right her being a face unless she turned into some kind of Christy Hemme character spunky and fiesty bouncing around the ring (Ah I miss the Hemme powered fun one)
Or turn her into a Lacey Von Erich confused girl just wandering round aimlessly not really having any friends and going out there to prove to the WWE universe that she’s a worthy competitor. I think she needs to fued with people like Gail Kim or Jillian give her a good lenghty superstars match where she can show of her moveset (I ain’t seen her use alot of her moves for ages! I’m thinking back to the Eve/Maria/Melina fueding days)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME! haha I just had to throw that one out there Oh and like I always say turn Layla into a Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley character refusing to defend her title, thinking she’s above the divas haha that would be T.V Gold (and she has the comic genius to pull it off) MAKE IT HAPPEN VINCE!!!
And that’s my news… back to the desk! XD
I’m sorry but I just find these little segments with Rosa to be hilarious. As for the match I thought it was really good for the time it was given. It really made Tiffany look amazing. I love the aggression that she shows everytime she enters the ring. Beautiful superplex! I always look foward to seeing the Faithbreaker, beautifully done yet again.
im rdy to see layla vs michelle again! if u look back @ they’re matches before layla even had a solid move set, they had some agressive matches. not lita quality or anything like that, but potential to a good match. serena also needs to become an active heel cause there is only 2 on the show an they are splitting up. hell, put gail kim on smackdown as a heel, GAIL KIM VS BETH PHOENIX!!! that would be a great womens title fued!
I myself don’t see anything serious happen until after Oct.1st.Why not you ask, cause ratings wise WWE isn’t worried about that on SD with it changing networks. They aren’t even having Diva segemenst each week.As far as Rose goes I doubt she’s a baby face ,she just getting some on screen time that’s all.As far as K2 and Tiffany goes they are doing a great job at in-ring work.Till Beth gets back and then watch out .LayCool continues to do excelent work in the ring .And Teddy doing his bit as far as the Co-Women’s title was great.I do think that by the time Oct 1st is here Beth wil be very close to if not already back.May even surprise everyone an re-appear that night. Beth is the link that will make Blondtourage a great Duo.Beth wil always be the Glamazon the Dominant Diva on SD and she can help K2 and Tiffany Up their In-ring work.Which both K2 and Tiffany need to improve but being as they are on SD makes it that much better in actually doing some work. Not like they do on Raw.
Great Redux Melanie and I agree. I thought the segment went pretty well, and if the match had been longer, I would’ve really enjoyed it as I liked what I saw from the two. The Superplex was good for her first one, as I’m sure she was nervous when it was taking some time to do so I love that they traded blows to make up for the time instead of just stalling and making it look bad. Decent Smackdown overall
I wonder where they are going go from here because Teddy isn’t going to let Michelle and Layla walk around with two pieces of the womens title.
I liked this week’s match it was short but intense, I just think Tiffany should add at least 3 more moves to her move set. Kelly didn’t even sell the push into the barricade into a few seconds later, lol. I can’t see Rosa turning face, the only reason she started working out was to impress LayCool. I think they have her interacting with face/heels just to show that she is still training without having to dedicate a whole segment to her. A.J debuting as heel wouldn’t be logical because they can tease her about her size, her young girl looks, or even that she is from New Jersey. Just the fact that they didn’t let the “Sexy and Spicy” Rosa in but would have a debuting A.J join wouldn’t make sense….. but when has WWE ever made sense.
Not gonna nitpick, everything about this match worked for me, it was fun to watch. I love the Rosa skits, they’re silly and fun. A nice break from the action, Everyone has their roles to fill in the company, some are meant to be midcarders, lower card, main eventers, jobbers and comic relief. These silly little segments could turn into something special for Rosa Mendes as a character, if not at least she’s getting tv time and making the most of it.
I personally think Rosa is a great wrestler and soon will have the chance to showcase her inner talent, by that I mean wrestling not working out.
Kelly Kelly, looking great. Too bad you showed a blank reaction when Layla pushed you in to the ever so tough barricade.
As for the match it was slow paced but evolved nicely. I watched it for the first time in silent so I could focus on the match not the audio. I am sure that when Tiffany went to pin Michelle that the ref’s hand hit the floor 3 times.
The aftermath has got me excited for next week as I want to see what the result to the championship dilemma is.
@aiden123 they’re nickname for Beth was “The Manazon” lol
@theregoeskitty and @aiden123 It was “glamaman” actually. LOL!
