After an exceptional 6 Diva tag match and a huge return by Melina last week, Diva fans were waiting with bated breath to see what was in store between the returning Melina and Divas champion Alicia Fox. WWE decided to give us a treat this week in the form of Melina vs Alicia in a non-title bout. Unfortunately for us, the action didn’t quite live up to the hype. Check it out below:
First out is Melina, who is looking great, followed by Alicia Fox, who is looking rather… interesting. The two alpha females stare each other down before the referee starts the match. Melina goes for a lockup, but Alicia scoops her up and powers her into the corner. After a fierce elbow, Alicia flings Melina across the ring by her hair. While Melina is getting her wits about her, Alicia kicks her in the gut, forcing her to retreat to the apron. Alicia tries to follow up, but Melina lands a shoulder block and slides between the champ’s legs, pulling Alicia down over her knees for a unique backbreaker and a near fall.
Before Alicia can get back to a vertical base, Melina starts wailing on Alicia with strikes to the back. Alicia tries to get back into the mix with a clothesline, but Melina dodges with a matrix move, followed by a snapmere driver and a flying faceplant. Alicia retreats to the outside to regain her composure, but doesn’t get the chance, as Melina is hot on her tail. Melina charges around the ring to bring Alicia in the hard way, but is laid out by a vicious clothesline.
Melina manages to crawl back into the ring and Alicia drags her to the middle of the ring by her hair for a two count. Still holding a handful of hair, Alicia slams Melina to the mat and lays in a elbow. Alicia whips across and attempts her patented tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, but it goes awry. However, this doesn’t stop Alicia from going for the pin for a two count. Alicia pulls Melina to her feet again (by her hair of course) and tries to slam her to the mat once again, but there was some miscommunication between the two and Melina ends up just falling to the mat face first.
Alicia immediately takes it to Melina, driving her knee into her back while wrenching back on her head. Melina fights out, but Alicia locks in yet another submission, this time an impressive Torture Rack. Melina manages to wiggle out once again, and reverses into a scary looking Last Call for the win. During the commercial break, the mysterious GM announces that Melina has earned herself a shot at the Divas Championship this Sunday at Summerslam.
On paper, Melina vs Alicia sounds like a great match, but it failed in it’s execution for several reasons. First of all, Melina has to be at least a little rusty coming in off of 8 months of inactivity. To push her into a singles match with the champion was a big mistake, especially a longer than average match like this one. I would have preferred Melina participate in a few tag teams matches, picking up wins against Alicia that way instead. I just feel like this whole situation is rushed and no one will benefit from it at the end of the day.
Secondly, WWE has allowed Melina to jump to the head of the line with little to no buildup. I truly believe this feud would benefit from having a few weeks to flourish. It seems WWE is just desperate to get Melina vs Alicia on to the PPV, which is a huge mistake. I’d much rather see the Raw Divas forego SummerSlam altogether and save this title match for Night of Champion. This way, the feud is given time to develop and Melina and Alicia get some to get used to each other in the ring. Needless to say, I’m not really looking forward to the title match at Summerslam after seeing this match.
Aside from the Diva Title feud, WWE also booked the obligatory pre-SummerSlam bathing suit match, this year dubbed as a ‘Summer Swimsuit Spectacular’. While most of us cringed when we saw the graphic for this match pop up, the match wasn’t the train wreck we were expecting. Check it out below:
We come off commercial to Jillian and Maryse already in the ring with… Santino and Koslov?!?! Great… Although Cryssi said she thought Maryse looked great last night, I’m not quite sold on her shades and Kung Lao hat combo just yet. Next out are the team of Eve Torres and Gail Kim, who make their entrance via inflatable slide (they sure got that set up quickly), which looks like a lot of fun to be honest. The Bellas Twins slide in next and our match is underway.
Bitter rivals Maryse and Eve kick things in a rather comical way, as Maryse tries to smother Eve with her hat. Eve tosses it away and goes on the attack with a Thesz press. The ladies catfight for a bit, much to the chagrin of Santino, who appears to be officiating this match, before Brie Bella tags herself in (despite standing in the middle of the apron). Bella #1 manages to get in some licks before Maryse slaps the taste out of her mouth and whips her into the corner. Maryse charge, but Brie counter with an elbow. However, Before Brie can follow up, Maryse’s partner Jillian restrains her with a beach towel, allowing Maryse to get back in control.
Jillian tags in and launches Bries across the ring with a hair beel before locking a surfboard-like submission. Brie fights her way back to her feet and hits a few booty bumps before flinging Jillian over her head. Brie crawls across the ring and tags in Nikki, who hits a flurry of strikes, followed by a slick hurricanrana and a low dropkick.
Nikki goes for the pin, but it’s broken up by Eve, who lays Nikki out with a corkscrew neckbreaker. Maryse rushes in next and sets up the French Kiss, but is ensnared by Gail with a neon pink innertube. While Maryse struggles to get free, Gail hits Eat Defeat, but is attacked by Jillian before she has the chance to celebrate. Jillian hoists Gail onto her shoulders and kicks Eve to the outside, before throwing Gail on top of her. Unfortunately for Jillian, she didn’t see Nikki Bella (who is still the legal competitor) scaling the turnbuckles. Nikki hits a flying crossbody to pull out the win over Jillian yet again.
The Bella don’t get to celebrate for long, because it seems Tamina (looking great, might I add) has made her way to the ring (via slide, I assume), and the twins retreat. Tamina stares down Santino, blocking his escape in a very strange and slightly uncomfortable exchange. Eventually, Tamina lets the Milan Miracle leave but not without a firm slap on the ass, sending Santino up the ramp giggling like a school girl.
While this wasn’t the best match Raw has ever put on, it was surprisingly good, especially for a ‘Summer Spectacular’. I thought the Divas managed to find a good balance between comedy and actual wrestling, which is new for these types of match which are usually all fluff and no substance. Also, good to see that Santino/Koslov didn’t really play a part in the match. In fact, I forgot Kozlov was even there.
The Tamina/Santino exchange was interesting, but I cant help but feel like it’s a rehash of Beth/Santino, which I wasn’t a huge fan of. On the upside, it’ll give her something to do since it looks like The Hart Dynasty/Usos feud is on hold for now.
All in all, it was a hit and miss night for Raw Divas. While Alicia and Melina failed to impress, the ‘Summer Spectacular’ exceeded expectations. I’m hoping that the less than impressive match between Alicia and Melina was a one time occurrence and that they are able to redeem themselves this Sunday at Summerslam.

I agree Melina vs Alicia was a disappointment and the Divas summer spactacular almost made me change the channel especialy after seeing the inflatable slide I thought oh no nothing good is gonna come out of this thankfully I was wrong.
I have no good words for the Alicia Fox vs Melina match. My mom said “If u dont have anything nice to say, dont say it at all.”
The summerslam match was surprisingly enjoyable. I liked the Neckbreacker that
Eve did. I believe tht Tamina/Santino thing will lead to a feud with the Usos and Santinlov considering the Usos are out of the title picture ever since losing to the Harts in that non title match on Superstars.
Though I’m so happy to see Melina back, the title match at SummerSlam is just an awful idea. Melina has been gone for 8 months, and she needs a little time to work of the ring rust. Six days is clearly not enough time to do that. I don’t understand why the WWE couldn’t just draw Melina vs Alicia out for another month. Night of Champions is the next PPV, so we already know there’s going to be a Diva’s Title match there.
On a lighter note, Tamina is absolutely stunning.

When Summer Swimsuit Spectacular trumps 4/5minute title feud match, you know something odd is going on.
Fingers crossed Melina puts all her effort into training for this match (and I fully expect her to – she’s always had a reputation for being devoted to her work, and will surely be motivated by watching that match back.)
Surprise of the night, which none of you mentioned in the post raw show, was that Eve continued to show some personality! I was really impressed with her. When Brie tagged her out, she turned around and got in her face, then got her revenge by laying out a fellow face (Nikki) with her neckbreaker after breaking up her pin.
Looks like the fiery Eve tweener turn that someone predicted in the Fantasy Creative Game a few weeks ago seems to be slowly coming true.
Hey, wasn’t Melina wearing that exact same outfit on Superstars against Alicia before she got injured?
I don’t think Melina/Alicia was as bad upon watching it a second time, but I’m not convinced that they have any chemistry. Melina’s whole persona kinda outshines Alicia’s sassiness/fieriness, and wrestling-wise something just isn’t clicking. Alicia doesn’t receive Melina’s high-impact moves that well, and Melina doesn’t have the kind of build that works best when taking Alicia’s offense. I mean, she doesn’t seem weightless when she moves like Gail, for example, so moves like the t-a-w backbreaker don’t look as awesome (even when they actually manage to hit it).
Hope they can prove me wrong at SummerSlam.
The Melina vs Alicia match was not that bad to be honest, it wasn’t amazing but it wasn’t horrible.
I totally agree with you, Steven. It was WAY too soon to put Melina in a singles match, especially against Alicia. It would have been better had she been in a tag match. I hate that they are going to have a title match at SS. This is exactly what I was afraid of: giving Melina a title shot immediatly just because she is Melina.

i don’t know.. the raw division was pretty great of late.. we had tamina/natalya, bellas/jillian and eve/maryse/gail/alicia,now everything seems to have just stopped in favour of a comeback which hasn’t even been capitalised on. the least wwe could do is give melina mic time or have her earn a no.1 contendership.
not optimistic for the ppv or even raw next week, but hopefully they do impress.

It’s sad that [since Wrestlemania 25] Santino is the best thing WWE’s women’s division has going for it. On the plus side, Santino is amazingly entertaining.

going back to were i started, Tamina looked fierse she was woorking it! the look just made her look sexy and goergeous she was rooking it!!! as for you sayin that the whole Glamarella par 2 thing wont work i think it didnt for Beth because she was already known when all this started, im not saying Tamina is not known but its different with Tamina because when Glamarella started Beth has already bein champion and she was one of the toop heel on the Raw rooster she was hated to be more exact but Tamina is berly known and putting her with Santino might work because well we see Santino in EVERY Raw is its not guess reffering is in a match or with the guest host so if ur a fan of Tamina this is good for her she will have more TV time and Santino since hes so popular with the crowd can help her to get more crowd reaction since the whole Natalya/Tamina feud just dissapeared well this can actually help her!

Melina vs. Fox match was sloppy as hell. I rather have continued Eve vs. Alicia for the title instead of Melina.
Maryse’s attire was so 80s soap opera. You know like the one episode they would have shot at the beach around the Fourth or Labor Day.
Alicia vs Melina wasn’t THAT bad. They just need to plan it out better. Summerslam should be pretty good.
I think WWE is really trying to put at least one diva match on each PPV card nowadays. Since SD! storyline wise had nothing useable, Raw was the show they had to pull from. WWE probably had SS planned as if Melina was coming back earlier in July and since she managed to come back in time for the PPV, they’ve stuck it on the card. Besides, Alicia needs to defend her title at a PPV before NOC anyway. Mel’s going to lose here and win a month later (unless NOC sees a triple threat with Eve, then Alicia wins that too and Mel wins in October).
In my opinion i am hoping that Melina does not win the Divas Championship. Don’t get me wrong she is an incredible wrestler, but Alicia will retain this sunday. I think WWE managemt are making her look like a big name star.
The next divas champion, who i think deserves it has to be, Jillian!!! I thought WWE were going to carry on with the Jillian/Alicia angle but looks as if they dropped it.
I like Jillian, as of lately WWE have seemed to use her well like fueding with the Bellas etc not jobbing as much but I just really hope she gets what she deserves. Also her twitter hinted that she wants to be champ again so hopefully fingerscrosed lol!!
The WWE Divas have had a PPV match every PPV this year, unlike last year. So I’m glad whenever the Divas get a PPV match, even though it is rushed, at least it’s something, am I right?
Hopefully for storyline progression, Melina loses, and we get an epic buildup to NOC. But I am looking foward to this Sunday.
I don’t care if she is a favorite online(which means nothing), Melina is overrated as hell. And so annoying during her matches, screaming like an idiot every time she hits a move. Can’t wait till she’s gone.

That match was soo rushed. Tag team matches would have been more appropriate to build up a storyline between the two rather than a bob-standard; “I want my title back” scenario.
The Swimsuit match was very entertaining. Jillian sold her hatred towards the Bellas yet again :). Eve’s finisher was hit with excellence on Nikki! Bellas can’t wrestle? Yeah… sure. I liked how Jillian eliminated both Gail & Eve outta’ the bout and the Bellas Bulldog/CrossBody finish worked extremely well – Reminded me off the Hardy Boys with the Twist Of Fate & Swanton Bomb xD.
I hope that Melina loses via Alicia cheating; this would allow a good storyline to progress until the next (or next, next) PPV :).

people the singles match i have 2 amit was sloppy but it was better than 99 percent of the matches while melina was gone on raw and alicia will probbaly retain at ss by cheating some way and build up the rivalry into noc and have melina win the divas championship there
and the summer spectualr match was good better that i thought but they put up and took down that inflateable soooooooo fast

Still don’t feel this was a bad match it was good, could’ve been better in some spots, But i’ll agree with Steven that Tamina is hot, my future wife for sure. Also the match for SS is being rushed, although we’ll have to wait until Sunday to see if this risk pays off and was worth taking.

I thought they were chanting “yall cant wrestle”, before i was mad and now im furious how can they say that about alicia, i thought alicia did amazing last night and melina was the one who was over lacking they just couldnt wait after summer slam to have melina return. Melina is obviously not ready at all, all im praying is that they have a better match then last night, ^^^^Agreed i thought the match last night wasnt as bad as the matches we usually get i mean c’mon people its better than the 1 minute matches we get,so appreciate it and stop yapping about how bad it was. At NOC i want to see Melina vs Alicia vs Eve, i want eve to get put in the feud but i still want alicia as champion i want WWE to give alicia a longer and better reign then maryse. Also i wonder what match we’ll see for the womens title at NOC Tiffany vs Layla or Michelle vs Layla (if they break up).
Yeah I don’t know why people are always bashing the Bellas. Sure they are not in ring generals, but they are pretty good for converted models and you can tell they give it their all. I loved the swimsuit match, just wish they were in bikinis because it would have been a little sexier and more fun. The one pieces made it seem so, I don’t know, serious? My girl Maryse looked so hot though, I still think she is the hottest Diva on the roster right now. She also looked flawless when her and Ted came out.
As for Melina and Alicia’s match, it was just more of the same from those two. They have never clicked in the ring for me and I have never quite enjoyed their matches together. Their styles clash and Alicia’s height really gets in the way with Melina’s complicated moves I think. Last night’s match was just a whole lot of miscommunication it looked like. The “can’t wrestle” chants were uncalled for, they always are no matter who is in the ring because these people are risking a lot going out there and doing this. Hopefully their PPV match will be a whole hell of a lot better.
@justbringit: Yes, we get it, you don’t like Melina. We figured that out when you called her ugly, and when you were bashing her in every redux.
And support means a lot regardless of where it comes from. Melina connects with a lot of people, like it or not. She’s also been one of the most over women in the company since MNM’s debut, and that’s kinda impressive.

thinking about it, whether the singles match was amaaazing or a total botchfest, i would’ve preferred there being no match at all and instead some form of promo from melina. could’ve said she went to management or whatever and they’re giving her a title match considering she never actually lost the belt. alicia could’ve then attacked her or something – would’ve left us wanting more. instead, at the ppv, we’re getting a repeat of what just happened (hopefully with alicia winning, though).

So I don’t think the match was horrible either. People tend to exaggerate. The girls have chemistry in my honest opinion. Melina has ring rust and that is obvious. I mean how long was she in FCW sharpening her skills? It was barely a couple of weeks and she got called to RAW already? What did we expect. Its not necessarily her fault. When Vince says “jump” you ask, “how high?” And I believe that might be the case. Melina has had plenty of good matches and I believe she(along w/Alicia)will pull through this Sunday. I’m positive they will deliver a great match. Melina is a terrific worker. She’s no Molly Holly or even Natalya, but the girl is a talented worker. And she’s dedicated. She’s gonna get it together, let’s not jump on her case like a pack of wolves. She finally returned(just like we all wanted) and now she’s gotta work fast to sharpen her game. Let’s see what happens at Summerslam.
Alicia will more than likely retain as it looks like she’s being built up to be a dominant champion..creative must really like her. Just like we do. ;)
And btw, I see my girls Gail and Jill…- – “Gillian Kim” haha lame!- – kept everything tight in that gimmick match. The Bellas are doing well and they’re both beautiful. Eve is showing a lot of fire as previously mentioned, has she been reading Diva Dirt? :P
Maryse looks good and that’s about all I can say. Her and Ted aren’t doing it for me yet. Perhaps because they’ve been kind of brushed aside in favor of the big storylines and people who actually improve? I don’t know. Let’s hope they get it together fast because all they(Ted and Maryse)do is look good..but that’s not enough. Also, I hope Maryse has been training behind the scenes. She’s got one move, a DDT. And the only thing pretty about that is her dramatic hair flip, but this isn’t a LoReal Shampoo commercial..so get it together Maryse!!

Speaking of Maryse, I’d kinda prefer to see her take on Melina as opposed to Alicia. She may not be as good a wrestler, but she has more natural chemistry with Melina than Alicia does from what I’ve seen, I think Melina has the kinda style that could bring the best out of her. And I don’t particularly care for him, but TDJ involvement means they could have an actual story to their rivalry, and could make way for obvious Morrison involvement.
And if you think about their characters and personalities…if anyone can match Maryse in terms of pride and hot-headedness and even arrogance, it’s Melina. Whereas I still feel as though I don’t know much about Alicia. As a personality she can’t compete with Melina, and that’s one of the problems.
God, speaking of natural rivals for Melina, I wish Mickie was still here. The Melina/Mickie feud never reached its full potential.

I just know if there’s even one fuck up this Sunday other sites, etc will pin all the blame on Alicia and start bitching about how it should be Maryse/Melina. If Alicia couldn’t keep Melina together, then there’s no way Maryse can.
Alicia better retain (cleanly) and move on. Melina can go feud with Maryse, like everybody wants because she clearly needs more time to train. I do hope Alicia loses at NOC though so she can go to SD in the (supposed) draft. But then again Lay-Cool are there and there’s no chance of anything happening over there with her and them on the same brand since Michelle cannot step out of the spotlight. I wish we could see a Fox-Beth feud but it’ll never happen unless Beth goes back to RAW and they feud over the divas title while Lay-Cool feud with Kelly and Tiffany, of all people, over a cut up title. <_< The WWE works backwards anymore.
The singles match seemed so forced. I’ve always thought that Melina since turning face wrestles like she wants to “prove she can wrestle”. Personal preference aside, but I’ve always thought she wrestled with a chip on her shoulder. Even though most people think Melina was more interesting when she wasn’t doing a bazillion counters and moves.
The 3 way tag match was a lot of fun. Jillian used the towel to hold Brie back and Gail used the inner tube to constrict Maryse. I really enjoy the double team finish without them doing a double team move. It adds excitement to a match. Especially since I was worried they would do another lame finisher-fest thing. haha I loved Maryse’s look with the matching hat and sun glasses. I thought the Bellas looked very sophisticated too.
But I am surprise no one mentioned how great that crowd was last night or for Eve to be so favored she wasn’t involved in the finish outside of being kicked outside of the frame.
I liked the Gail Kim signs.
Alicia was as much to blame as Melina there. She shouldn’t attempt to do big moves on Melina if she can’t handle it. The tilt-a-whirl was down to both women, as was the mis-communication. But when Alicia was doing that backbreaker submission thing, her legs looked ready to buckle, and she was entirely responsible for the Last Call mishap. Like other people have pointed out, she grabbed Melina’s feet. That’s why the move didn’t work.
Not to say that Melina was completely innocent, because she messed up a few times there, and was responsible for a few awkward moments, but you can’t pretend that Alicia was innocent.
Either way, it wasn’t great, but I hope they get it right at SummerSlam. I’m sure Melina will be back on top form eventually regardless.
Melina was rusty sure, but I will say Alicia doesn’t do well in long matches, atleast with power moves or so it seems. She tends to struggle in long matches, especially against opponents who actually work in there. Melina can go toe to toe and until now, Alicia has only gone against girls who are not complete wrestlers, remove Gail. She reminds me of Trish when she worked her Mania match with Mickie. The longer the match, the more they struggle to keep it botch free. She needs to work on her stamina and they need to avoid big moves one after the other, unless its two complete wrestlers in there.
That means, Alicia, Eve, Layla, Kelly, Tiffany, The Bellas and Maryse should use simpler moves with the occassional big move. Avoiding being on the receving end of big moves themselves as they struggle to keep up and catch their breath. Melina, Michelle, Beth, Natalya, Tamina, Gail and Jillian are women capable enough of going balls to the wall with no big breaks in between. No hair pulling and slaps to fill in the lack of experience. Alicia is good for her experience, id say she’s a natural compared to the other trainwrecks…but let’s face it, SHE IS sloppy and not without her flaws. Again, I’m not putting the blame on her alone, she just needs to keep working too.
