After weeks of little to no direction for the SmackDown Divas, we finally have a storyline — albeit an interpromotional one — with Lay-Cool set to challenge Melina at Night of Champions to unify the Divas and Women’s Championships. If the objective for tonight’s SmackDown segment was to push that match, well, they did a good job. If the objective was for Layla’s commentary to overshadow and seem more important than the match in the ring, well, they also accomplished that too.
Watch below:
In a video that is 5 minutes long, you actually have to skip to the 2 minute mark for the match between Kelly Kelly and Michelle McCool to begin. 3 minutes for the match? Don’t expect a mat classic. However, as I said above, it looks like the match itself is second to the commentary so it’s not as though we’re expecting an in-ring spectacular.
As the bell rings, Kelly begins stomping at Michelle and then hitting a few forearms but before we can even see 10 seconds of action, the camera cuts to Layla at ringside. Granted, being a big fan of Layla’s mic work, I appreciate the opportunity to see her ramble endlessly but come on, there’s a match in the ring!
Back in the ring, McCool grabs Kelly and hits her with a beautiful belly to belly backbreaker across her knee much to the adornment of Layla. Michelle goes for the pin but no dice and instead begins kneeing Kelly in the back. But our attention is again diverted to Layla on commentary.
Michelle then hits a belly to belly suplex on Kelly but again, we cut to Layla as Michelle goes for a pin. Michelle begins doing press-ups around Kelly’s fallen body and wait… what’s that? Layla again. This time we find out why her skin looks so great…
McCool continues to dominate Kelly in the ring with knees to the stomach, and after yet another cut to Layla, we find Kelly now on her feet and ready to fight back. Kelly goes for the tilt-a-whirl headscissors and connects. She hits a few more moves including a nice drop toe-hold. Kelly then sets up Michelle for a hurricanrana, jumping onto her shoulders but McCool counters with a Faith Breaker and it’s all over.
Anyone else feel like they were watching a tennis match? I was trying to pay attention to the match and trying to pay attention to Layla on commentary but it seemed one definitely overpowered the other tonight. I love Layla’s comedic relief and quite frankly, that is all I took away from tonight’s match. It seems the only reason they put on a match tonight was to put Layla on commentary, evident by the continuous camera cuts to her.
That makes two wasteful matches this week in WWE.

Michelle and Kelly looked stunning but layla not so much and the match was pretty awful. Quick question since smackdown is coming to syfy tuesday nights does that mean its going live?
I am really glad they are calling the belt the Unified WOMEN’S Championship and not Divas’.
The match was pretty good. At least for the parts we saw ;)
Layla on commentary was good but I was given more Layla then I cared for.
i think Layla was the best part in this, the match was kind of boring to be honest, Michelle used the Belly to belly like 2 or 3 times
They’ve done this before, actually. They do it a lot. You know, while waiting for the PPV they have the champ at the table and the match basically is pointless for those watching it on the tele.
It makes me think that Layla might be the one defending the title and they’re giving her the spotlight before the big match.
With that said. Yes, Layla is hilarious. I love listening to her (I’m an accent whore. See my obsession with Mr. Tom Chaplin) but she’s funny and so fake it’s amazing. And when I say “fake” i don’t mean “bad” I mean she’s playing her role VERY well. I love her.
“Quick question since smackdown is coming to syfy tuesday nights does that mean its going live?”
Smackdown is still going to be on Fridays when it moves to SyFy. It will be live the first week, but will go back to the “tape Tuesday, air Friday” schedule the second week.
Match was fine, Layla was fine. Solid stuff. Melina next Friday, please.
agree with all u said Melanie..i dont remember anything from the match but i remember what layla was saying!!
Kinda liked the match… Michelle’s hair has grew even longer than I remember…It’s obvious… WWE will put Melina against Michelle… since Melina pinned Layla las monday night and Michelle won this match.. I think Michelle will be the one facing Melina…
And If Michelle does win the title…. would it really be unified… Layla as Womens Champ and Michelle as Divas… it still is on different people… if its unified wouldnt it be on one person only?
Still liked the match
That was a nice belly to back backbreaker from Michelle. I hate when they show the guest commentator more than the actual match, it’s not like we couldn’t hear her already…Layla is great as always but they should have focus more(the camera) on what’s going on in that ring.
I liked what I saw of the match but the constant switching between Layla and the match was a little irritating. She was on commentary, we dont need to see her speak we can listen and watch the match at the same time its not that difficult. Still Layla did a good job as usual, and loved the belly to belly backbreaker from Michelle.
this sums up why i can’t seem to get behind lay-cool. it always feels as if one member is trying to overshadow the other. whether it be layla talking over tonight’s match, michelle always interfering in layla’s matches, layla dancing around and over-yelling during mccool’s singles matches.. even mccool taking away from layla’s championship win with the co stuff.. it just has never felt much like a solid partnership to me.
Layla’s hyperventilating made me laugh! haha
LayCool FTW :)
“She’s like a verbal hurricane!”
I have to disagree completely, i found layla very annoying on commentary, she didn’t really say or add anything to the match. I think she needs michelle just as much as michelle needs her or maybe more. As for the match nothing spectacular, but i liked the belly to belly backbreaker, but the match was pointless.
@fanboy mccool brought back the extentions, i don’t know why because it looked better before. And layla doesn’t make a credible opponent for melina, she has lost WAY too many times to melina, so i hope the would go with mccool. And on wwe.com the preview for the match implies they will split the titles like they did before.
› i wouldn’t call tonights smackdown a “waste.” i enjoy the in-ring work of michelle mccool, but come on guys, you have to be happy that layla finally got to talk, lol. as i mentioned somewhere else, although i like michelle more, i did yearn to hear layla talking without her regular “mhm!” “*cue the giggle.” thing she does when michelle is talking because layla barely gets a word in. so yeah, i was well contempt with seeing michelle in-ring and layla on the mic — i think wwe is proven that either we get good matches that go no where storyline wise, or an “eh,” to good storyline with sucky matches, you know? so i’m not too choosy.
› i do wonder if layla has a condition, or something, or is it harder than it looks, but she always seems out of breath when she’s talking and this isn’t the first time, i’ve noticed it before. anyway, layla over-reacting to almost everything is so cute and funny, trying to steal the spotlight from each other or not, i find these two a great pairing.
“get off my friend, she’s on my friend!” › lolz, layla ftw.
@ LAYGLAMACOL…. split the title?? like actually split the divas title.??? so each one has half of both the Womens and Divas title on thier shoulders?
@unscripted; besides tonight, when was the last time that Layla sounded out of breathe when she was running a promo? I thought that it was just overexaggerated acting, which is ironically enough perfect for her character/role — but i don’t remember Layla ever sounding out of breathe during a promo before, tbh??
…As for the match. Yeah, I don’t remember any of it. Lmao. I watched it earlier today, but I just remember it seeming short and Layla on commentary. I didn’t like this match at all. But, I’ll give Michelle credit because she’s a great wrestler but the match itself was just boring. And, the fact that it’s consistently Michelle vs Kelly, lately — isn’t really helping matters.
Layla has awesome skin and she’s freakin hot! Michelle was actually getting some heat! I love it. She’s doing a great job! And wth Layla?! You can give them a couple..”Fabulous Moolah, Trish Stratus…” yea yea, I was waiting for her to say Lita! Damn…I mean even Michelle McCool can recognize Lita as a great female superstar! Grrr…lol but she was good on commentary. Did you borrow any of dashing Cody Rhodes products? Layla “No we have our own flawless products..” lol perfect. That gave me an idea. Could they possibly trademark their own “Flawless SkinCare Line?” Why not? The guys get to do the movies and they all suck.
even though the match was short.. it was actually pretty good. kelly showing a lot of aggressiveness as michelle too. great ending. layla, i wasn’t able to concentrate to watch the match, i have to re-watch it again as shes pretty damn laud and distracting. settle down english bagel.
simply ok
Didnt really care for Layla at the table…would rather have focused more on the match!
I think the match to unify the belts will be a triple threat…where Laycool will double team Melina early, then we may witness the end of Laycool as they will battle to become undisputed womens champion! But as Michelle and Layla are fighting for the pin, they will forget about Melina who will sneak back in and pick up the win…which will start a feud between Michelle and Layla over whos fault it was they lost the title!
Kelly totally jobbed?
I dont think kelly jobbed…. but on the start of the match.. her kick looked weak.. or something wrong happned
@Fanboy – Yea I noticed it was a tad awkward too but I didn’t make a fuss over it..I mean it is Kelly we’re talking about lol. I don’t really care for her anyway…I like Michelle though.
I hate watching kelly wrestle.. too much unnecesary screaming, its actually annoying.
@fanboy thats what it said on wwe.com look at the preview for the match. Maybe they will, it would be interesting if they did.
The match was blah and I didn’t find Layla’s commentary that great either, it was all over the place and loud. I’m still not into this current storyline because I’m pretty sure they’ll put the unified title on McCool’s waist so she can have one more accolade and be pushed even further down our throats. I’m almost 100% she’ll get the belt. Another reason I hate all this is because I wonder what’s going to happen to the show that doesn’t have the belt. The writers can barely come up with something right now for the girls and it makes me worry about what’s going to happen once there’s no gold to go after. The Diva’s were looking up and though I’m trying to remain optimistic about the unifying of the belts, I’m forseeing bad things for some odd reason.
@Rodneyclint I agree with you 100%
I don’t know why people are presuming that Laycool will win. Don’t even waste time in thinking in who would wear the title after this.
I honestly see Melina winning this, with the Diva who didn’t fought blaming the one who lost the title and turning on her. I don’t see Layla as a capable heel against Michelle, so I feel that Layla will face Melina and lose, with Michelle attacking her because she lost their title.
:( Kelly should win!i REALLY HATE LayCool, they’re so boring, all they do is say “Flawless”,scream, and give nicknames to the other Divas!(And Michelle screaming at the ring ,i really wanna kill her,she looks like a chicken screaming)
And what are Matt Striker doing?????We have a match in the ring, and he’s asking Layla about her make-up???Horrible!
Oh,i forgot…how Kelly Kelly can be so cute??x)
this was a pretty average match but it did nothing to build up the Melina/LayCool match at Night of Champions. i honestly hope it’s Melina vs McCool & the match hopefully goes about 6 or 7 minutes b’cos we haven’t been seeing many long matches this year :/
Being there live, you would be surprised how many people do love LayCool. They were very hot with the crowd all night. On Smackdown & NXT. Everybody loved them.
“Being there live, you would be surprised how many people do love LayCool. They were very hot with the crowd all night. On Smackdown & NXT. Everybody loved them.”
That’s odd, as NXT aired live and when they came out, there was literally no reaction at all on TV when their music hit. It was so noticable that it was pointed out in the live NXT discussion on this site.
They all looked great yet the sad thing was the best part of the whole segment was the entrances tbh. “Your not enough for me!”
@ xfrenchkiss … “@unscripted; besides tonight, when was the last time that Layla sounded out of breathe when she was running a promo? I thought that it was just overexaggerated acting, which is ironically enough perfect for her character/role — but i don’t remember Layla ever sounding out of breathe during a promo before, tbh??”
› maybe she just breathes hard? i don’t know, but an example would be like in the segment with their photoshoot not too long ago … you can’t hear michelle breathing at all, even as she talks in long sentences, but you can with layla. “ooh” *breath. “flawless.” *breath.
and i didn’t mean it as complete “omg is she okay” kind of breathing, lol, just kind of noticeable above all things. i don’t know, i used to play both women in an e-federation, so i play close attention to their mannerisms and what not, call me weird, i’ll choke ya =P
and the one where they were first talking about their plan, if you find that video, and go from 0:24-0:31, you’ll hear what i’m talking about too. *nods.
again, just her breathes are a lot more noticeable than michelle’s..who knows, just thought i’d point it out to see if anyone agreed, lol, and i think someone mentioned it as “hyperventilating” maybe that’s what it is over a condition [=
Disappointed with this one here, felt like a House Show routine. It’s obvious they were planning on having Beth back already. They clearly didn’t take to K2 in her audition, so now they’re just spinning the wheels.
Luckily, Laycool is coming off a huge accomplishment with the NXT rookie win, moving into the Unification program with a quickness, and they have to work to make sure Laycool doesn’t make the natural face turn too early. That’s a real compliment to a talent, let me tell you. They can easily afford to toss some weeks away while things shake out during this bloodlett– I mean, “Unification Program.” *Cough*.
As far as re: Laycool being over, I’ve seen it too live. It’s really surprising when you think about how they have to try to keep them heel at this point. The crowd definitely perks up when they start their whole routine, almost eating it up.
They have to keep them heel, when you think about it, because all they have left after that is the Glorious and Greatest Of All-Freakin’-Time Oh Wait That Was Two Months Ago’ Alicia Fox and Maryse, who is over heel but hasn’t progressed as much in-ring and they’d rather save her body so they can cop her over for somebody.
The only thing that came to mind for this week’s SD! was the phrase “Move along! There’s nothing to see here”.
The match was filler when the WWE could at least put in one ounce of effort and get Rosa in the ring. Next week SD! will be Layla vs Kelly Kelly for the Nth time. 5 weeks isn’t short enough for NXT season 3 to end so all the women can move to SD! and refresh SD!.
I didnt even bother to finish watching the match , its was boring and layla was getting really annoying. Besides Michelle is gonna win the title ne waz , did we forget about Beth.
This one title on both shows isnt gonna work. Cuz what happens when Beth does come back next month we both now she is going to go after the title ? That means the title storyline will be on SD…which means the raw divas are outta luck without a title to defend so we will just see pointless matches , until some one from raw gets a title shot…
