New Name for Divas Title, Layla Makes History Too…

WWE.com is referring to the newly unified Divas and Women’s Championship solely as the ‘Unified Divas Championship’.

It looks like the new unified championship will carry on the lineage of the Divas Championship which was launched in 2008, as Michelle McCool is listed as the new champion on the WWE.com title history for that belt.

Meanwhile, Michelle isn’t the only Diva to make history tonight. It seems the historic 60+ year lineage of the Women’s Championship has ended with Layla being recognised as the final Women’s Champion, according to that belt’s title history.

It could be possible that WWE resurrects the Women’s Title somewhere down the line but for now, Layla book-ends the history of the Women’s Title along with The Fabulous Moolah. Truly the end of an era.

Congrats to Layla, I love her and she really deserves to have something big under her name! The final Woman’s Championship is definitely a way to do that! and Congrats for Michelle being reconized as an official champion I guess, (Even though Layla Deserved that aswell..).

  • Spike7000

For the championship title history section, they are still acknowledging the logo for the Womens title

  • Spike7000

I’m pretty sure they will still acknowledge the Womens title in anything special with the Divas on wwe.com for example like the 2 Womens History months they did

  • LaceyVonErichFan

I nearly fainted when i saw “truly the end of an era”.

Well hopefully they make a new title that isnt colorful it should just be gold. But this doesnt end everything yet we still have a possibilty of michelle pissing layla off again w/ layla saying she is still considered womens champion and then it just leaves mccool as divas champion.

  • Macho Madness

sad…how could they go with the divas title over the womens championship? I really don’t get it…

    very saddened by this news

  • 2theriot

Now this is upsetting. All the history, prestige, and recognition of the Women’s Title is now gone. It just ended. I’m happy McCool’s champion, but i just wish she held both belts, similar to what the Hart Dynasty did. To me it’s equivalent to when you’re watching the Hall of Fame and the people who you don’t know are accepting the award and won an inactive title. Ala the AWA title. I’m too young to even know what those letters stand for, or even know what it means. It just scares me to think that maybe when Molly Holly or Jaqueline are getting their HOF rings a long time from now, people won’t recognize them because their title wins were long erased. Like the WWE never even mentions anyone who has ever won the Cruzerweight title. :( hopefully it will get resurrected, once the WWE regains confidence in their divas. It happened before. :)

The Divas title is plastered across the website, it’s on all the Divas merchandise, they even sell a toy replica of it. It was obvious which title was going to be kept. They should update the lineage because obviously Michelle is the real final Women’s Champion. She wouldn’t be the unified champ if they didn’t recognize her as such.

As much as I’m happy for Layla having such a great accomplishment under her belt, I’m still pretty upset that… well… the women’s championship has come to an end. I mean, we’re talking about the company’s oldest title in existence – 50+ fucking years. Hmm, I still don’t know how I feel about this.

  • jaded

I congratulate Michelle McCool on her victory but it’s just bittersweet. I’m kind of upset at this. It’s weird to think that the prestige and legacy of women from Fabulous Moolah to Alundra Blayze to Trish Stratus just ended. That makes me sad. That belt meant so much and to see the Diva’s Title supersede it upsetting.

But at the same time, the WWE has made it clear time and time again that their women are not female wrestlers, but DIVAS. It’s only fitting that they have that title.

I’m probably putting way to much thought and emotion into it, but this is really sad.

With that said, we can safely say the Divas division is dead :(
The classic Women’s Championship is one people will never forget! This is a disgrace to the Divas of the company.
The Divas division was dying a slow death up to the Lita’s retirement. I think after she left things completely started to fall apart!
What is WWE’s problem? What’s next the merging of the United States and the Intercontinental Championship?
I think WWE did this to match with the Knockouts. I mean The Knockout’s belt is called the Knockout’s Champion. And now WWE’s will be called the Diva’s. That’s sad. :(
Anyways I hope they don’t retire the original title, even though it seems like it will be retired since the belts are merged on WWE Title History and even in the descriptions say the title is merged to become the Unified Divas Champion. Soon to probably just be Divas Champion.

  • Kellybug

Actually I’m glad the Women’s title is no more. WWE pretty much destroyed any credibility it still had when they started this whole “co-champion” thing and then split the belt in two.

Poor Layla, she got so screwed over during this whole thing by not having a title reign of her own. Something tells me the writers aren’t going to have Layla be “co-champion” this time around.

  • wildsnorlax

I don’t wanna freak out cuz I know I’ll see much worst in da future.

  • Envy

I am so offended right now. First they rip that belt in half, and now it’s non-existent. You officially suck, World Wrestling Entertainment.

  • 041293

So, is Michelle the sole champion, or are the both champions with Layla being the Women’s and Michelle being the Divas?

  • Devin-Dash

Looks to me like the WWE is trying to establish Michelle McCool as the Fabulous Moolah and Trish Stratus of this generation. Moolah was not only the first ever WWE Women’s Champion, but she was also the oldest and longest reigning champion. Trish Stratus has the most reigns, broke the record she set three times, and has the third longest WWE Women’s Championship reign in history. Michelle McCool was the first ever WWE Divas Champion, the first woman to have held the WWE Women’s Championship and the WWE Divas Championship separately, and the first woman to have held them at the same time. It’s not about the Undertaker, it’s about the WWE wanting to create another legend. And honestly, when we think of Trish Stratus and The Fabulous Moolah in terms of legacy, it’s almost impossible not to think of Michelle McCool’s accomplishments.

  • Parkur

just another reason to love layla :)

  • Juniper

    @Cod3Cody dramatic much

Why would Diva’s hold the women’s title, bit of a disconnect there?

Yes they are merging all titles.

  • unscripted & flawless

@ Kellybug … “Poor Layla, she got so screwed over during this whole thing by not having a title reign of her own. Something tells me the writers aren’t going to have Layla be “co-champion” this time around.”

    › i completely agree

  • RedHotVixen

Why call it the Unified Divas Championship? Why not call it the Unified Womens Championship? The Womens Championship held so much history and prestige. The Divas Champion is not taken nearly as seriously. Not to take anything away from from Micielle McCool, but this is also a slap in the face to Layla. Not only was she in McCools shadow the entire time, but now Laylas reign has ended without her even losing her title. Whatever. I am too tired care anymore.

  • Cod3Cody

Oh and to add to everything, Michelle McCool gets this why? Oh that’s right because she is married to the company! As soon as she got married to Undertaker that is.
There is truly nothing more to say! The Women’s Championship is treated like a joke for the last year of its existance, I mean come on they ripped the title in two pieces. I just can’t wait and see what they do with the belt(s) now.
    And @Juniper-
Why? Because it has history! The only title remaining with the WWE, that still has the same design (or very similar) from the attitude era is the Intercontinental Champion. I swear if they merge that with the US Title, I will go crazy. But what am I thinking? That is going to happen soon. :/ I honestly don’t have time to argue or rant about this anymore, nothing is going to change it’s pointless. WWE is heading in the wrong direction.

  • Len

I hope laycool will feud with each other…Michelle will run around as if shes the reigning champion but Layla will probly remind whos the womens champion and this will leave michelle as divas champion…and mayb next ppv they will face off for the proper unification match. Or mayb teddy long might come out on friday sd and say that michelle is only the divas champion and will have to go to raw…?

  • Rashanti

My whole problem is not them getting a new belt or keeping the divas title. My main problem is the way they discarded the title. The whole little “Oopsie we broke the title!” situation, the build up for the match, and not even acknowledging the past history shows how much the WWE cares about women’s wrestling, which is barely, if not, at all. If it wasn’t for companies like SHIMMER, PWWA, NCW Femme Fatales, and etc. my passion & love for womens wrestling would have been long gone.

  • will

1.THEY BROKE THE WOMEN CHAMPIONSHIP BELT JUST TO INSULT THE PRESTIGE OF THE BELT HAD?

2.THEY MAKING US BELIEVE LAYCOOL WILL HAD A FEUD,WHICH IS NOT GONNA HAPPEN(DREAM ON)

3.THEY PUT MICHELLE IN LAYLA SPOT JUST TO LET MICHELLE HAVING ANOTHER HISTORIC MOMENT EVENTHOUGH SHE’S NOT A REAL CHAMP?SERIOUSLY?

    NOW WHAT?

1.ARE THEY GOING TO BREAK THE UNIFIED DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP AGAIN AND SHARED IT?

2.NOW, IM SCARED FOR THE REST OF THE DIVAS, THEY WILL NEVER HAD AN OPPORTUNITY ANYMORE, EVEN IF THEY DID WIN IT FROM MCCOOL, MCCOOL WILL BEAT THEM AGAIN IN TWO WEEKS LATER AND FOR THAT MCCOOL WILL SET A LOT MORE RECORD ON HER WINNING

POOR DIVAS, BUT FOR SURE, THE DIVAS DIVISION IS DEAD THE DAY LAYCOOL WAS AROUND :(

  • MartinF

I think the Divas Championship will be kept on. Now that Hart Dynasty have lost the Tag Team title, WWE have only updated the “WWE Tag Team Championship” history and have now moved the World Tag Team Championship to the retired titles list at the bottom of the page. WWE must want the newer titles to start a new legacy (but is strange especially with Chris Benoit as the first WWE Tag Team Champion).

  • Len

Im all for Laycool but breaking the womens championship in half is a slap in the face to past greats such as fabolous moolah, chyna, trish, lita, molly holly and more…

As for michelle I cant stand the sight of her make history over and over…Layla should have some common sense and just attack the crap out of michelle and ressurrect the title. This way it will bring back respect to the divas division.

I hope teddy long creates a big swerve in Michelles title reign and strips the womens title off her thus keeping her with just the divas belt and sends her to raw and mayb Natalya might give michelle a run for her money…That will be real talk!

Come on Teddy! make Michelle hand the title over to Layla….wwe is only using layla to give Michelle an interesting character

Diva division is so dead right now can Beth Phoenix please come back
