Michelle McCool, who lost a Loser Leaves WWE match last night at Extreme Rules, is indeed leaving the company, she confirms via Twitter.

The angle served as a very real swansong from WWE for the first ever Divas Champion, who writes:

Thx for the love guys….I know there will always be rumors, but that was it – real talk! @mslayel ….nothing but luv 4 u! Luv u all…nite!

Word of McCool’s WWE exit first leaked online last week.

Michelle, for all intents and purposes, is now retired. Though there’s something to be said about ‘wrestling retirements’ & I’m sure, like Trish Stratus and Lita, we’ll see her in the odd appearance down the line.

Thoughts: It is hard to imagine a Divas division without Michelle but no doubt the division will continue to grow and develop, especially with Kong incoming. Good luck, Michelle, and most importantly, thank you!

  1. I’m sure she will come back once Taker divorces her.

  2. Thank you for everything you’ve done Michelle! Good Luck (with your future Endevers)

  3. @The Eric, immature much?

Good luck Michelle. You had a great run and left a great legacy.

  4. Oh, no!
I’m not even a big fan, but this is still so sad to hear!
    Thank you so much, Michelle!

  5. I’m literally in awe. It’s very, very hard for me to comprehend MICHELLE MCCOOL not in the WWE Divas division. Say what you want but this woman has been an intricate part of the entire division. In a way I understand she’s accomplished sooooo much and worked with every diva on the roster and competed against legends such as Trish Stratus and Victoria but I’m very saddened by her absence.

I am optimistic about the future of the division thou, Michelle has also gained a tremendous amount of respect from myself by getting Layla even more so over and metaphorically “passing the torch” of the top heel to Kharma.

If this is indeed the end of Michelle McCool’s career in the WWE I salute you Michelle. I believed in you during your time in the diva search and always knew you had great potential. fast forward 7 years later and I can honestly say you are exiting a Trish Stratus like exit, on top. #ThankYouMichelle

  6. I’m not a fan of McCool either, but she was an AMAZING athlete! Best of luck to her!

  7. i dont believe it..i still think she will be back. her ending to wwe came out of no where and theres no way she going out like that. she’ll be back. mark my word.

  8. I wonder why she’s retired…perhaps her and Taker are going to start a family?

I’m not a huge supporter of WWE or people from the Diva Search, but McCool has proved to be a hard-working athlete and I personally feel that, despite all the pushes she received, never got her true moments of fame in WWE. Sadly, she’s been active during a time when the fans don’t really care about the ladies of the ring (in WWE, at least), but she’s done very well for herself and had some really good matches.

    Best of luck to her!

  9. miss you michelle!hope we see you again ala trish.
nothing but luck for you in the future!

  10. A bitter sweet moment for me.I have been her fan for all 7 years of her career.
She kept on pushing despite what rumors people created and always provided the WWE crowd with solid matches and she is a really sweet down to earth person.I still cant believe she’s gone Lol

  11. Just had to create an account after reading this blog for months.

I’m really going to miss Michelle. She has worked so hard throughout these years to prove herself. Michelle deserves nothing but the best in her future. Thank You Michelle!

  12. Not the biggest McCool fan, but I definitely respect all that she has done in this business. Best wishes to her and to her future endeavors.

  13. Its sad we lost a diva (and good wrestler/worker) but with bad news there’s good news and the good news we have Kong— er, kHARMa and (just maybe) other divas getting pushed.

Michelle will be missed but the show must go on.

  14. She may want to have children. Nothing wrong with that. People can’t wrestle forever. She won’t be highly regarded as Lita, Trish Stratus, Mickie James, Victoria, Melina, Chyna, etc… but she did alright and a lot better than Candice, Christy, and other diva search women. Never been a huge fan of hers, but I will respect and appreciate her work and legacy.

  15. Also agree with Betty, the show must go on. Kharma is here!

I find it heart warming how although McCool was not generally favored, she still has her fans. It’s heart breaking to see some people in denial, they just don’t want to face it that she’s now officially retired. Don’t worry you guys, she will make special appearance I’m sure. Heads up. =)

  16. YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

But where does she say she is retired in that post? She says that’ was it

  17. Sad To See Michelle Has Retired But Thanks For Everything You Have Done and hope to see u sometime down the line ala trish

  18. thank u michelle, i cant believe shes gone, it thought it was temporary. NOOOO! anyway its her choice, thank you for what ever u did for us michelle, your an amazing person and an excellent worker. thankyou for all the great matches and memorable fueds. thank you soo much. i love you!!!

i hope to see her down the line!!! we will most definatly miss u!

  19. wow…

  20. THANX SOOOOO MUCH for what you’ve done for the divas division and you’ll be missed PLEASEEEEE diva dirt get an interview with Michelle it would be highly appreciated

  21. @The_Eric: “I’m sure she will come back once Taker divorces her.”

    Was that necessary?

  22. I don’t like loose ends, and I feel like Michelle’s end was loose. I want to see her try to retaliate against Kharma but I guess she won’t get a one on one match now…

  23. Can’t really believe it – seeing as she’s been so dominant in the divas division during 2010 – but I’m quite sad really. I’ve been a fan of Michelle’s and to see her go is definitely sudden and shocking. There are positives to come out of this – other girls will get pushed now and Layla has come out of this looking amazing. Perhaps saying it’s the ‘end of an era’ is a bit much but the sentiment’s there.

Good luck Michelle and hope to see you back one day :)

  24. Sad to see Michelle go. She’s still and always will be one the divas who brought the smackdown womens division back and one of the reasons started really getting into to the wwe. Best of luck to her in the future.

  25. poor michelle, i think everyone knew it would be her last match, im gonna miss u michelle and thankyou soo much for everything. i love you and always have! your truely a nice kind person!!! but i really hop michelle comes back, this will NOT be the end of mccool! i just know it!

alotta peopl are saying that michelle is seflish really??? she definatly put over 2 people, she put over layla BIGTIME! and kharma!!! she definatly loves what she does and shes wants the best for the womens division and it showed tonight! im happy michelles leaving with alotta accomplishments and succes. hopefully the haters will die down a bit and appreciate her.

good luck in the future michelle

  26. @04bia i dont get why Michelle fans call people “haters” some people just dont like her….ur acting as if people have to like her or something…
anyways its nice that Michelle actually put 2 divas over..

i dont know if lays gonna be heel or face? she said sorry to the other divas so does that make her a face? or she might turn again now that she beat Michelle…

  27. You know what, I truly believe that absence makes the heart grow fonder. I’m sure we’ll all miss her to some extent — some more than others. I will say that I could definitely see her passion for wrestling. She was never there to just get fame and then try to branch out to a different career. She was an excellent athlete and a hard worker. So thanks Michelle — I’m sure we’ll see you in some capacity down the road.

  28. I don’t want to believe that she’s truly gone. :-( It was so sudden. But her personal life is what’s more important and how her body is doing. I’ll def miss her and I wish she would stay but everyone’s curtain will close and the show must go on!

The good thing about last night was KHARMA! Does anyone else feel like its a new beginning of a NEW era for the Divas? I’m going to call this the new era now. :-) I hope this means big things for the Divas now!

Thank you Michelle for all of your hard work. All your achievements we’re worked for. :-)

  29. Sad to see her leave but love to see her go… Im not s huge fan but I just cant imagine what will happen now that Michelle is gone.. hopefully she returns…

Like DD predictions early 2011, a big star of wwe wil be let go… (retired really but almst the same)

  30. just like how the fans cheered like crazy as LIta retired they will all miss Michelle soon… I know i will

  31. Thank You So Much Michelle! Whiel we lost a big chunk in the womens divsion , we gained one more. Im not gonna be sad because I know we will see Michelle again ,its gonna be wierd not seeing her on SD. Maybe 2nite on Raw she will have a proper goodbye.

I guess it was Michelle’s turn to say goodbye and Hang up her wrestling boots…

  32. I’m still in total denial, hating the idea of a division without Michelle and whats worse is she’ll never get revenge on Kong now. Bittersweet day for the Divas as they lost a huge star but two new ones were made last night and for that I thank you Michelle.

  33. @xmelissaa

I honestly have to share the sentiment that Michelle McCool leaving and the way Kharma debuted is definitely symbolic of an era ending. What would only add more sybolism is the Women’s Championship being brought back.

Michelle was the top player in the Diva-Era – from 2007-2011. She was the inagural Diva’s Champion, who went on to become the first woman to be Diva’s AND Women’s Champion who then fittingly (although to my distaste) unified the Diva’s and Women’s Championship. With Michelle as the pinnacle of the division women like Eve, Kelly Kelly, The Bellas, Maryse, Layla, etc. thrived.

Now that Kharma has arrived, I think many of the Diva Search girls are about to be thrust into the background – casting us into another golden era (that is, if the writers can manage that). The talent for another golden era has always been there, but now it’s undeniable because Kharma was built up and she is going to become the new focus of the women’s division for the time being. So we’ll have women like Kharma, Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Melina and Gail Kim in the WWE. I just really, really hope that WWE pulls out the creativity with the division again. Because this is there chance to make people care about women’s wrestling all over again!

  34. Thank you Michelle for some amazing matches! thats if she’s reading which im sure she will be being a fan of D’Dirt and all. Ill admit I was never a fan of her endless push, but i’ve always admired her ability to put other girls over, and above all push the division forward. Noone can deny the girl can go in the ring and its amazing the distance she came from being eye candy in the diva search to a fully fledged wrestler. I think Michelle never really hit the ‘big time’ per say but she definitely left a legacy, that she should be proud of.

I feel that the above comment hit the nail on the head, the WWE is now entering a different era for the Divas, Kong got more of a reaction walking out and hitting one move than what some Diva’s have managed in their entire careers.

  35. Very sad day for women’s wresting. Michelle McCool made history more than once, and no doubt with be a future Hall of Famer.

  36. #ThankYoucelle #welcomekHARMa You know, the only thing that came out from my mind when i read that Michelle will be “Total retired” is the new door to a divas division. It’s like a revolution of Divas division. Thank you celle, i’m not a fan of yours but i love your hardwork and real-life personality, you’re a nice and religious person.. Welcome kHARMa i’m looking forward to your HARM matches ;)

  37. I think this decision could shut up a lot of her childish haters. Retiring at her age is one of the most altruistic things she could have done.

Michelle could have stayed a few years more and win more titles than Trish, but she decided that she had a lovely career and decided to move on. This business, isn’t a business you should stay for more than 10 years (in my modest opinion), at least not in a company like the WWE, who definitly has the hardest schedule to fulfill. Besides she was injury prone and its good to leave before the pain consumates her body.

I have no doubt that Michelle will have a lovely life (with or without Taker, The Eric). She is a young woman who has intelligence. Maybe she will return to teach, maybe not. Maybe she wants to start a family (and being a PRESENT mother while on the road is hard) or even her own business. It doesn’t matter.

What matters is that Michelle, while having a lot of haters, made history while on the WWE and left her mark.

To me, a Michelle fan, she will be missed. While I don’t think she was the best female wrestler, I strongly believe that she was the best at making bad wrestlers look less terrible (her matches with Maria are the best example) and the fact that she probably had some backstage power (which I NEVER associated with the Undertaker, believing that she gets pushed because of her talent and good behavior), while most consider a bad thing, it actually helped Layla’s career, who would probably be released if it wasn’t for Laycool.

So with that, I would like to thank Michelle for her efforts and hope that with her leaving, her haters start to appreciate what she did for female wrestling.

  38. good luck, and i also think this will shut up alot of people that say o, she got everything because she is takers wife, she lost her last match, she was destroyed by a debuting character and took a beating, she helped get other women over in her last match, and i love that fact

good luck and i hope to see her in the wwe again in the near future, dare i say it but a WWE Hall Of Fame

  39. A sad day for women’s wrestling. She will be very sorely missed

  40. I must say that Michelle leaving has affected me a lot more than Mickie’s release and Cherry’s (who was my favourite back in the day), wasn’t a huge fan until Laycool days and I just am gutted she is gone.

I am surprised WWE allowed Layla to pin her, I expected Kharma to debut and like, ‘take out’ Michelle in a match forcing her to retire, I was pleasantly surprised that it went the route it did.

I am now going to read Melanie’s piece on Michelle retiring =)

  41. i don’t believe it. i have a feeling this is part of a story line where she will come back & face off against Kharma…

  42. 1 match dont make some people change their minds on how McCool got what she got Sherri. Im not saying it was of Taker but some things makes people think of it.

Now not a fan but it will be odd not seeing McCool on TV since she was the staple of the division but now some others can shine its about time.

  43. michelles retirement hit me more than mickies marias and katie lea’s! judging by these comments, alotta people adore michelle and she WILL be missed.

queennattie, i agree 100%, shes definalty left her mark as the “flawless history maker” alotta divas are sending wonderful tweet messages to michelle. nattie, scott armstrong, victoria, torrie, trish etc have send wonderful messages to michelle. she was adored and liked by people. so i guess that kills rumors about michelle hate backstage cos shes obviously loved

  44. @The_Eric …classy. [/sarcasm]

i think it finally sunk in to my head that she’s leaving, and all honestly, i’m freaking the hell out. i used to be seriously giddy when i heard lay-cool’s entrance music, especially if it was on RAW, because i didn’t expect to see them. and now not seeing michelle’s face on any WWE programming for what might be forever? wow…i don’t know how divas wrestling could ever be the same.

giving a small tunnel of hope, just like when trish retired and lita left, no one thought there would be anyone to really carry the division anymore, but then michelle stepped up as top heel and had her amazing feud with melina, so now that michelle is gone, maybe another woman can step up and refill the shoes as the top diva wrestler in WWE again? …it could be kharma, but i won’t say that until i see how she actually gets used. attacking divas at random after they’ve already lost a match and are worn down will get old eventually, if they keep doing that. i wanna see kharma beating women left and right and dominating fatal four ways, or something. not just attacking people for the next 10 weeks. y’know?

  45. Thank you michelle for all your dedication and hard work we really appreciate it !!!!

    Thank you .

  46. SCREW YOU ERIC!!

Love you Shelle McCool!! Wish it was Michelle Romano..maybe? one day?
DAMN UR PRETTY WHEN U CRY!

God bless you Shelle n thanks most of all
I know for sure i will miss you very much

Layla and the rest will continue with Kong Beth Natalya and EVe guiding the way
