Jim Ross Feels Lita Could “Help” Business by Returning

WWE Hall of Famer, Jim Ross, commented on his blog that he feels Lita could “help the biz” (presumably WWE) by returning to the ring, or training future stars in WWE’s developmental territory.

RELATED: Former Women’s Champion Backstage at Raw Last Night

Ross met with Lita — real name Amy Dumas — this past Monday when Raw was in the former Women’s Champion’s hometown of Atlanta. Of the visit, he says:

Good seeing Amy Dumas in Atlanta. She’s staying busy but was smart w/ her money and owns property in Atlanta and Nicaguara. Still looks great and has a wonderful spirit. A true pleasure to be around.

‘Lita’ likely can help the biz in many ways including, perhaps, a short term run as Lita but could certainly help greatly in WWE developmental.

Lita has been retired from WWE for five years this month. Since, she has made just two cameo appearances on WWE television, once in 2007 with Trish Stratus and last year in a segment with Pee-Wee Herman.

Thoughts: I think enough time has passed for Lita to perhaps come back and have one more match. The fans are certainly jonesing for it. Though she left WWE as a heel following the Matt Hardy/Edge saga, that seems to be water under the bridge and I think WWE fans would genuinely be excited to see her back judging by the pops she received in her last two appearances. I think there’d be a genuine interest and money to be made in a Lita return.

Yesss. A few months, a year tops. Lita has managed to stay away after her retirement so her “returning” would be bigger than Trish’s who wrestles a match almost every 6 months. Lita would automatically be the top diva, sure… But someone needs to light a fire under the Divas…

Trish came back in 2006, 2007, twice in 08, 2010, and about 6 times this year

Six times this year? I would have to beg to differ. And when she did come back, some of it was only for appearances. She didn’t always wrestle a match. No disrespect, just stating the facts.

“Trish came back in 2006, 2007, twice in 08, 2010, and about 6 times this year”

In 2006, she was still an active wrestler. Hell, she was Women’s Champion going into 2006.

2007: She & Lita put in an appearance at the Raw 15th Anniversary show, along with other retired vets.

2008: A one off match in December in her home town, mainly because she and Beth never had that angle planned in 2006 because of Beth’s injury. That’s the only one where it wasn’t for something specific.

2009: This was when Raw was having a guest host every week. She was the obvious one to be the guest host in Toronto. Not doing it would have just been plain snubbing the company.

2011: Promoting Tough Enough, same as Austin. Then the recent appearance in, again, her home town, for the Edge tribute (old friend).

Does she throw a little promotion for her own brand in there? Sure. Why not? She plugs WWE all the time, so they can return the favor. Besides, isn’t health & fitness something WWE SHOULD want to promote? It’s kind of perfect for them, having her out there with her Women’s Championship belt when she’s promoting fitness to children.

She doesn’t have a Legends contract, but she’s done the Goodwill Ambassador job better than anyone. At a time when former WWE stars make the news for all the wrong reasons (like Flair, the Hardys, Chyna), having a healthy, successful, scandal free ex-champ around does nothing but create good PR for a company that NEEDS all the good PR it can get.

As for Amy, yeah, she’s kept her distance with only two appearances on Raw, the last one being about a year ago.

Listen, I don’t even like Trish, but it’s not necessary to bash one when you love the other. They BFFs in real life for goodness sakes.

I do agree that her return would probably get a big pop though–just because fans have not seen her in a very long time, let alone in the ring, so the memory of the way she was is firmly planted in their minds. However, if she doesn’t come in and do a perfect moonsault or diving hurricarana I suspect we’ll never hear the end of it.

nothing against lita but i hate the wwe mentality that the diva division has to revolve around one person, we had it with trish and then we had it with michelle. she could help the up-and-comers in fcw, sure, but i don’t think lita could help the business as a whole. yeah, it could get some interest from the ‘diva haters’ and perhaps diva matches will not loe as many viewers as they have been lately, but the only thing that could help the “business” is consistent, creative and interesting writing from the scriptwriters for their divas.

I have to some what disagree with this statement just because there were times where Trish wasn’t the focus (Molly v.s. Victoria, Lita v.s. Victoria). Was Trish focused on a lot, yes? I agree with that, but there were different feuds during that era.

Now the Michelle McCool comment, I agree with a bit more because she (LayCool) had the Women’s title for the last 2 years the title was around, so yes, I agree with you there. That’s why I’m not as big as a Michelle fan as most people were.

But I love what you wrote here:
“yeah, it could get some interest from the ‘diva haters’ and perhaps diva matches will not loe as many viewers as they have been lately, but the only thing that could help the “business” is consistent, creative and interesting writing from the scriptwriters for their divas.”

“nothing against lita but i hate the wwe mentality that the diva division has to revolve around one person, we had it with trish and then we had it with michelle.”

Trish was the one who get the crowds going. If you’ll recall, they pushed Victoria as the face of the Division in 2003-04, but Trish & Lita were the ones who got the fans invested into what they were doing. They more than earned their top spots.

But, it always helps if one or two people can emerge as the focus by getting over with the fans. Trish brought the Women’s Championship into the upper card. Mysterio made the Cruiserweight belt important. Those titles declined because no one was able to get themselves as over with the fans. And, at least in 2007, it wasn’t from lack of effort from the company. As soon as Melina got the belt the first time, they immediately pushed her as The Next Trish Stratus by trying to recreate the Trish-Christy feud with Ashley in the Christy role.

The problem with Lita is that she became a star by wrestling, not her persona and she was never the same after her injury. When she came back she was really careful in the ring and not nearly as exciting. I’m guessing if she’s back she’ll be the same. She’s not Trish. Lita’s comeback won’t be as impactful. I’d prefer if they brought back Medusa with the women’s title. That would be unexpected and exciting.

    • litafan2000

      November 2, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I actually thought Lita was a awful wrestler back when she first started since she only had a year of wrestling expirence. Molly Holly herself said that when Lita came back she was a much better wrestler. I never could understand why people thought Lita was good in 2000. She was okay, but I personally thought she was much better in 2002-2006.

        November 2, 2011 at 11:49 pm

She was at her absolute best in ’04. I think the only good thing about ’01 is that she did a lot more lucha moves. I miss her northern lights suplex and her tornado DDT.

      • DivaDerby

        November 3, 2011 at 12:02 am

Maybe she was technically a better wrestler because she was more careful in the ring, but she was not as fun to watch. Before she did those crazy lucha libre moves that the fans loves. She was almost like a female rey misterio.

    • litafan2000

      November 2, 2011 at 11:52 pm

I’m not really understanding you when you state she isn’t Trish. When Trish returned earlier this year it seemed like the fans didn’t even care. Lita has been gone for a good 5 years and most fans want her to come back. I think Medusa is stretching it a little to far. Don’t get me wrong, I love Medusa but I highly doubt the fans(kids/teens) would even care or let alone even know who she is. Which is unfortunate!

They don’t need to remember Medusa, they can air old Nitro footage of her throwing the title in the trash can. That can be promo for the WWE Network and it can give her an excuse to bring back the title. She can say they never beat her for the title, so she’s still women’s champion. She could manage DOD. There’s a lot they can do with her.

while she really has no benefit to coming back for herself (besides money), she could really help put over kharma in a big way when she returns next year (hopefully). a drawn out fued between them ending lita’s career at the conclusion would really cement kharma’s spot….

    • Williambitious

      November 2, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Kharma is by far one of my favorite female wrestlers. I feel that she’s going to be released. There’s no way that after having her baby, she’s going to return to the ring. I also don’t think she’ll be 100% the same as before.

      • norisclouds

        November 2, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Same actually. Besides even if Kharma does come back she doesn’t need Lita to cement anything, she would already be massively over based on character and wrestling style alone.

Anyway, if anything I’d see Lita doing a one off match with a short feud built over the course of a few appearances, similar to what Trish did. It would’ve been fun to see her as GM one night with the office redecorated to look like a punk rock band hang out or something, but I doubt we’ll get that…

Besides, she’d have to shake a lot of ring rust off and Beth and Naty are miles ahead of her in terms of in-ring skill. (I say this as a proud Lita mark) In any case, who knows if we’ll get such a match now. If the rumor-mill is true then I don’t think Beth will want to work with her. =/

          November 3, 2011 at 12:26 am

@ norisclouds; when i was talking about lita and kharma i ment lita putting kharma over as a monster heel. lita is one of the, if not the strongest babyfaces ever and if kharma destroyed her career, then she would get huge heel reactions. there really isnt enough baby – face power (if thats even a term) to make really good heels in the divas division, and i think lita still has that ability. regardless of whether beth and nattie are better in the ring, lita got corwds emionally involved, thats what sells tickets
          btw, whats the rumour?

        • norisclouds

          November 3, 2011 at 12:32 am

@_BRYAN_ ah I see what you mean.

The rumor mill is spinning that since Beth Phoenix unfollowed CM Punk and Lita from Twitter and he was apparently spotted leaving with Amy last night, that he left Beth for Amy.

He and Amy were rumored to be romantically linked about a year ago, but this was denied by Maria who knows them both. Still, people are now speculating that he left another girlfriend for Amy. It’s probably a bunch of bunk, since she was also spotted in Nicaragua with Adam this summer.

        • norisclouds

          November 3, 2011 at 12:55 am

Ok this is getting ridiculous now apparently Wade Barret is commenting on this Punk/Beth thing. I hate Twitter.

        • _Bryan_

          November 3, 2011 at 5:53 am

oh right wow haha, that seems quite far fetched….i think its wierder that she would be with adam in nicaragua, why isnt anyone talking about that? hahah
punk and lita are probably just friends. both are really quite similar just by look at them. still, the question reminas why she would unfollow not only punk but lita as well…

        • norisclouds

          November 3, 2011 at 6:37 am

@_Bryan_ for some crazy reason the Adam thing has gotten less traction, even though it’s been confirmed…you’d think that would be far more salacious.

With the way that people connect her to various men, Amy must have some magical power over them where they can’t let go.

I wish I had it–because if she’s bagged Punk and Edge then…well damn sister. Congratulations!

      • Spike7000

        November 3, 2011 at 1:07 am

And why are you people acting as if Kharma won’t even come back?

Kharma will come back and if she is not, she would not be talking about WWE and replying to Beth on twitter. WWE is already very high on her and the amount of months of her leave will be added to her current deal. WWE is not stupid enough to release after the ordeal with Dawn Marie back in 2005 plus they know she’s already way over with the crowd including us fans

Lots of women return to the their jobs after having a baby. She can hire a nanny like most working moms. The WWE though, should give her a light schedule, kinda like McCool’s was.

Exactly what @KALEDRINA said. I’d love to see lita back and wrestle one more match ,I’ve been waiting for it .Fot another run ? sadly ,Imo, its not a good Idea .At the state where the division is at right now ,theres NOBODY that can save it but CREATIVE & if Vinces way of thinking changes .

For all we know ,kharma could come back and be Tough for a year or so and then just Hit rock bottom and start jobbing left and right or not appearing at all. I still have faith in the divas division and Im waiting for the day it chages and it goes back to how it should be ,but thats not up to a returning lita or trish ,Sadly .

It’s just Beth and Natalya are from another generation that got to see these women in the ring and thus were able to get better wrestling training and together have amassed a great deal of experience in the indies and WWE. I honestly think Beth and Natalya are two of the top women wrestlers in north america. The negative comparison was not meant as an insult.

      • _Bryan_

        November 3, 2011 at 12:29 am

one of my favourite matches. such an even corwd reaction (well, lita won i think) you never put two faces in a ring, but i would call this an exception.

        • norisclouds

          November 3, 2011 at 12:40 am

The crowd was definitely pulling more for Lita there, though I think mostly because the story of the underdog is such a great one and Chyna seemed to have set herself up to lose what with interrupting the 3 count to torture Lita more and calling herself the most dominate female of all time. Storyline wise, it would’ve made sense for Lita to get a roll-up or submission by surprising Chyna then Chyna could go heel and take title back on RAW with a brutal beatdown leading into a longer feud. Unfortunately none of that ever happened.

Still, it was a great match and I loved Lita’s tornado DDT and armdrag over the head into an armbar. It’s a pretty underrated encounter and I think largely because Chyna interrupted a lot of Lita’s signature moves, there was no head scissors and she didn’t get to attempt a diving hurricarana or moonsault =/ that could’ve been THE feud of the women’s division had Chyna stayed.

        • _Bryan_

          November 3, 2011 at 5:49 am

couldnt agree more. as far as chyna doing what she was doing (interupting and being bitchy) thats just how they wanted to book her and it made sense. for lita to pull off all her signature moves on chyna as she would against another female would really make chyna look weak. you wouldnt want to make your monster champ (former 3x intercontinental champ) look weak haha. chyna should have gone heel i agree, mainly because she had a long face run and lita was more over
yeah i really liked the fued, it would have been great. what would have been better would have been chyna vs trish vs lita when they were in thier prime. zomg

        • norisclouds

          November 3, 2011 at 6:50 am

@_BRYAN_ That’s true. Later booking probably would have had Lita finally pulling off the head scissors and the diving hurricarana to moonsault Chyna for a clean win.

Ah well. If only we had a time machine and the power to keep Joanie Laurer happy and in WWF for just another year. They were clearly planning something big by having Eddie save Lita and do intergender tags with her and the Hardys, trying to talk to Lita backstage, etc…

JR talking about how Lita would help the business shows just how far the Divas division has fallen since the Attitude Era. Lita wasn’t the greatest in the ring, but what made her shine was that she was allowed to do anything in the ring. I still say her underrated match against Spike Dudley is one of her best when it comes to actual ring knowledge.

His statement also shows what flaws the WWE have been doing when it comes to the Divas. What made Lita great was they spotlighted the Divas back then, so fans could connect with them. When was the last time a Diva has a real promo that lasted 5 minutes? The way the WWE is today is all the Divas are cookie cutter Girl Next Door types and nobody has a real personality to stand out from each other. They just have matches with no real purpose or motivation.

Yes, they did have Eve steal Beth and Nattie’s mini-van, but when the WWE doesn’t show that footage on TV and only casually mention it, it didn’t really happen. The WWE also chickened out of having Eve face the consequences of her heelish actions by saying it was “Ok” for her to do it because they used the lame escape of all the Divas are licensed to drive all the rental vechiles or some such BS.

The simple fact is the PG Era is killing the Divas Division. If Beth and Nattie were around during that time they would have been wrestling the men like Chyna and not wasting their time carrying model, who aren’t even near their league.

      IAWTC so much.

Also, I quite enjoyed Lita’s 1st match against Dean Malenko…one thing about those years, the matches were generally so much shorter. They didn’t get longer until about 2003. Still, those were great matches and I actually really enjoyed the hardcore match she had against Jacqueline that year…I just wish they were given longer than five minutes and she’d gotten to do a ladder spot, since the crowd went nuts when she pulled a ladder out from under the ring. She also took some nasty bumps to the head with Jacqueline nailed her with the baking sheet! That’s also an underrated match.

I strongly suspect the current Divas of Doom storyline will end with a former women’s champions return at least semi-regularly, either Trish or Lita.

Neither Trish nor Lita would ever come back full time.

Trish retired to settle down and marry her boyfriend of (at the time) 14 years, which also killed her sex kitten image. That HAS to be the funniest deep dark secret a Diva and WWE had to keep out of the press. There’s one of the double standards for you. Jericho was able to have on screen romance storylines even though everyone knew he was married. :)

Plus, she has her business to run. With the studio, product line, and everything else she’s doing, she just doesn’t have the time. Sure, she loves wrestling, but at this point in her life, no way she’s going back to 300 days on the road a year.

While Amy isn’t as high profile, she’s built a life away from the ring. Even training people at FCW would mean moving from Atlanta, where she seems to have planted her roots.

As a fan I’ll support whatever makes her happy. I don’t personally see her coming back but you never know. She will always be a star to me,the first woman I ever cared about and such a sweet person. Having met her she couldn’t have been nicer and I really looked up to her as a teenage girl watching.

**To all those die hard Lita fans that supported her throughout that Matt Hardy-Edge fiasco, this is not directed to you.**

Why would Lita want to “help” a business that treated her like complete crap until she had to leave to save her sanity? The fans that would “die” to have her back were slut shaming her to no end just five years ago, and do you really think she’s forgotten all of that? She’s smart for separating herself from the WWE. That legacy has forever ruined the amazing career she had when she first started. I feel that most of this love she’s getting is guilt-ridden sympathy after everyone’s realized what a douchebag Matt Hardy really is. Stay far, far away Lita. You are so much better than this.

      DieHard Lita Fan here =)

Um that whole Edge Matt deal happened since late 2004 and ended in 2005..she said she was ready to go in 2005 but kept holding on..No offense to Gail Kim, but wow Lita’s name and personal life was dragged through the filth thanks to Matt and Vince McMahon who saw money in this, Lita kept strong and made it all the way until her contract expired in November 2006..hell even in her last match she was game to get her panties and vibrators sold.
I never cared for hardy hell Im proud to have stayed on Lita’s side all the way good times and bad. Edgehead all the way!! I really admire what a strong woman Lita is to take that BS every day and well she lost the sparkle in her eyes she didnt smile anymore, she looked tired and almost like the fans insults hate and love didnt phase her anymore =(
Lita…fighter all the way to the end!

Same!! Not to mention the fact that Matt has come out in interviews and admitted how much he exagerrated and lied about the situation. He never said “I lied about __”, but he might as well have! Admitting that it was an emotional fair where Amy rejected Adam? People forget, but Matt was on radio shows calling Amy a whore when he was released, when he knew GOOD AND WELL that she didn’t have sex with Adam or cheat on him while they were together. He flat out stated that they got together after Adam’s wife left him and he broke up with her.

I stand by my assessment and no Matt Hardy fan will make me change my mind:

Matt Hardy is an asshole. He cheated on Amy when they were together (which he also admits on episodes of the Hardy show and in another interview he gave) was controlling during their relationship (Jeff Hardy gave an interview about this) and then he painted her as a whore when they broke up.

As far as I’m concerned he can kick rocks! I am actually impressed Amy didn’t air him out to dry with everything that she knew about their relationship. I would have reamed him!

My bad I got carried away here lol…uhh YEAH! I say Lita stay the hell away from WWE..Trish is smart. She comes when its convenient for her and when it makes SENSE she is more than happy to get it on in the ring and give it her all get her ass kicked and kick it right back…she promotes her Yoga Gym..its a Win Win sitch for Trish!
Lita i would love her to return or to see her again but man maybe only if it was on HER TERMS like Trish!

I agree. As nice as JR is trying to be, I don’t know what he’s thinking. With regards to Trish, they have completely different situations and relationships with WWE. I can see why you compare them, but Lita has no dealings with WWE and Trish has stayed connected professionally, so it would make sense for her to return every now and then. Also, Trish had a beautiful career, almost perfect, in the WWE, whereas Lita’s…bless her soul for being able to endure that environment for as long as she did. She’s a strong person.

I can honestly say that her return IF it happens only thing that would worry me is Ring RUst. I never cared for hardy. In fact I find his brother jeff to be more a genuine person than matt despite his addictions.

And yes Trish’s career was a thing of beauty. Storyline ending and all. Love you Trish!! Hell Chyna and Sable didnt end like that. Neither did Lita but man shes a legend she always gets my love n respect. And its great Lita and Trish are still great friends. Its funny both debnuted about the same time and their contract expired the same year just two months diffrence.
Man when Edge n Del Rio were fueding before Edge retired, there was a big talk between the two about dedication to Lita and del rio making fun oof Lita with the chubby chick lol…I really wanted to see Edge and Lita back again as the good guys!!

          hahaha!! LOVE U LITA!!! =D

I 70% agree with your sentiments. Why should she stick her neck out for them? But on the other hand, her legacy has been somewhat redeemed by Matt Hardy turning out to be a crazy douchebag. A big part of me wants to see her come back and do one last, even if it’s short, run where she goes out in glory. I’m just worried that ring rust would tarnish her legacy.

It seems that most fans have forgotten. I only see really crazy people ranting and calling her a whore whenever they see her photos. I think most people have forgotten the over-exaggerated crap that wasn’t any of their business anyway and forgiven.

        Thanks for your replies :)

I understand where you’re coming from, and as optimistic as it sounds, I have to politely disagree. Of course people now see Matt Hardy for what he really is, but that doesn’t change the fact that, from a professional standpoint, she’ll forever be known as one of the most hated girl in WWE history. Look no further than her send off for evidence that there’s really no going back to the respect & regard they had for the Lita that once filled arenas. Even her bio in the Alumni’s section of WWE.com is a depressing read. That whole relationship and everything it did to her career is a just a big, dark cloud you can’t get rid of, and even if people have gotten past it, it’s like the elephant in the room when people reminisce about her run with the WWE. IMO, a return would be absolutely foolish and unthinkable for Lita. They just can’t do anything for her. Too little too late.

Great conversation here all. I really have nothing more to add, you guys have pretty much examined the situation from every angle.

The only thing I could add is that WWE should never have moved forward with the Edge/Lita storyline. The crap/spin that came out during shoot interviews on Matt’s part was bad enough. However, WWE increased the average fans awareness exponentially by making it the focus of their shows. Shock value is one thing, but shock value that concerns real life situations of your employees is deplorable behavior. It shows the moral bankruptcy of the folks running the WWE, and what they will stoop to in order to get ratings. I’m not even one to stand on moral high ground either, because I think folks that judge others have plenty of behaviors they could be judged upon as well. However, what WWE did was the lowest of the low given the circumstances. To even direct creative to script that storyline is jaw-droppingly callous. It would have been different if all party’s involved were warm to the idea, but that was clearly not the case. SMFH what some folks do to get money.

@ballplayer10123 it was a cruel thing to do…and Amy said she only went along with it because she felt she’d dug her own grave, so to speak. She felt guilty and couldn’t see into the future and know that this would be the rest of her career and the harassment would intensify.

I have to admit though, I absolutely LOVED heel Lita. Edge/Lita remain my number one favorite wrestling couple. They were golden together and their chemistry was unmatched. I just hated what it did to the character of Lita and Amy’s personal life.

I do think that fans could forget and get passed it, maybe it’s because I’ve seen way more sympathetic people in the IWC who now think fondly of her, but I try to be optimistic. I do remember what people were like back then, they were absolutely vicious…you’d think she had cheated on them personally. Every so often I still see fans say “Oh I love Edge, but Lita’s a whore I hope she dies!” which is so painful, misogynistic and hurtful when Edge was the one who was married to his second wife for two months in real life.

I hold out hope the fans would treat her nicely…I just need to have more faith in people than that.

To be fair to Vince, they DID ignore the Matt situation as long as they could with how they pushed Lita. Remember, they kept pushing her as the babyface against Trish as the heel for months after the Matt & Edge story got out.

It was the crowds that refused to play along, climaxing with that infamous in ring segment at MSG where Trish was doing her best to play it as though the crowd was chanting “Slut” at HER, only for them to respond by getting specific regarding Matt. So, we had the surreal situation where the heel got legit PISSED at the crowd for how they were treating the babyface (who happened to be her real life best friend).

So, it’s understandable why Vince was so pissed at Matt for creating the situation by airing dirty laundry. It wasn’t even just their plans for Lita that got screwed up because of him, but Trish and Mickie. The plans for Mickie had to be changed because the story required a babyface Lita. Though, switching to Trish worked best in the long run, as Mickie had better chemistry with her than she did with Lita.

They should’ve just taken Lita off TV and covertly drafted Matt to Smackdown. That might’ve been the end of it, and before they paired Lita with Edge against Kane, the crowd was actually starting to forget.

In any case, what happened happened. You can’t go back and change it. Personally I loved the Lita/Edge pairing, they were great heels with amazing chemistry. I just wish she’d gotten back into the ring sooner and run over the women’s division with a heel run like Trish did, but I got the impression Lita was not interested in returning to the ring straight away in October ’05 when she was cleared.

And I agree, it was understandable that Vince was pissed off at Matt over that…people are so quick to say he had every right, but how did that look at the time? The most over female babyface in the company for five years, who sells merchandise, is beloved by fans has her character completely ruined, storylines trashed, because her ex-boyfriend ran his mouth on line. From an employer’s perspective, the culprit in the situation was obvious. Every report backstage said that Adam and Amy were cooperative and didn’t say anything because they knew how the WWE felt about wrestlers breaking kayfabe online.

Matt had to know that what he did was stupid, and I did not get why fans suddenly seemed to forget the golden rule of kayfabe. I even remember insider JLB saying that “fans have no one but themselves to blame for Lita turning heel because it sounds like this incident is exaggerated in the first place”, and he was 100% right.

Yeah, the Raw after Wrestlemania where Trish destroyed her and Christy woud have been the perfect spot to take her off TV until her knee was healed. Everything would have likely blown over by the time she was brought back.
