Former Divas Champion Kelly Kelly has scooped up a brand new Diva-related Slammy — the award for best Diva moment of the year.
Kelly’s Divas Title victory in May on Raw beat out the other nominations which included Natalya‘s double-Sharpshooter on Eve and Layla, Kharma‘s debut and Beth Phoenix‘s Super Glam Slam on Eve.
The award was presented by former WWE Women’s Champion Lita, who returned to a big reception from the fans.
It remains to be seen if there will be a Diva of the Year Slammy award.
Thoughts: Both Lita and Kelly looked amazing! Hopefully this means we now have two Diva Slammys each year.

WOAH! People are going IN! I can’t say i’m surprised. Like I said before, Lita is a legend, and criticism of her past performances is not something people seem to be open to.
I may hold a bias in this debate because Jhonmarco and I are somewhat of a team on this site, lol.
Lita was groundbreaking, let’s make that clear right off the bat. She revolutionized women’s wrestling at a time when things were really limited for women in the WWE. She did moves that were associated with men, she wrestled men, and also uplifted her fellow women wrestlers. But was Lita ever a GREAT wrestler? No, not really. She was sloppy at times. That’s where I agree with Jhonmarco. That she was sloppy, and anyone can go back and rewatch Lita matches to confirm this. She wasn’t as great as some of you make her out to be. Just as Trish wasn’t an amazing wrestler, neither was Lita. Perhaps Jhonmarco could have put it in a nicer way for the overzealous Lita fans, but it is what it is.
However, I’m not sure I understand the comparison with Kelly. Lita was sloppy, but Kelly is just not good, lol.

Perceval, that feud was never about great ring action. It was about emotion in it, backstage segments, promos, etc. The wrestling was decent but never amazing, it was more about the emotion put in it.

Actually, it’s WWE that gets called for pushing the people in the Division as the top wrestlers that they shouldn’t. Kelly can’t run the ropes, can’t cut promos, isn’t remotely convincing in her matches, and can’t keep the crowd interested DURING them (Hence her matches having the label “bathroom break’). Her qualifications are being pretty and yelling a lot.
Stacy Keibler was pure eye candy, like Kelly. She got the Maxim cover, like Kelly. She could be carried through decent matches by Molly or Trish. But, she never held the Women’s Championship. She didn’t need the belt, and the belt didn’t need her. Yet, she was one of the most popular Divas they ever had, far more popular than Kelly has ever been.
Stacy not being the main focus of the Division meant more talented women weren’t being held down to push her. Now, the more talented, more charismatic, and, let’s not forget, very POPULAR, AJ Lee isn’t getting anywhere because there’s too great a risk she’ll steal the spotlight from Kelly if she’s ever in the ring with her. You see, unlike Kelly, fans chant “AJ” DURING HER MATCHES.
Yes, Lita had charisma and a great character. That had a lot to do with her popularity. But, you know who else had tons of charisma and a great character? Ashley Massaro. Now, ask yourself why Lita is considered one of the all time greats and Ashley isn’t.
You still have to get it done in the ring, make the fans care and invest themselves in the match. Lita did that. Kelly doesn’t, as the most popular description of her matches, “bathroom break,” proves. And yes, getting people invested in the MATCH is still the most important thing.
Was Lita sometimes sloppy? Yes. So was Gail Kim. Why aren’t you bashing Gail all the time like you do Lita? For that matter, why aren’t you bashing Kurt Angle?

True Stacey never won the title, does that mean Kelly shouldn’t? I don’t think so & you do know Torrie Wilson was supposed to be the first divas champion over the very talented Victora/Tara? There’s no denying Lita could get emotion out of people & tell a story but her execution of her moves were awful. I’m not sure what you’re watching, but AJ has a great future & currently has a storyine with Daniel Bryan. She’s being built up & I don’t think she should be champion, yet way too soon to pull the trigger on that. I hate that Lita’s wrestling gets a pass & current divas don’t get a pass. Obviously, you don’t remember how Ashley won Diva Search. If you did, you’d know it was ENTIRELY charisma & character. She was surrounded by Kelly Kelly types, and the competition was hers to lose from the start because she came in having developed a great character that she played, throughout. She didn’t even bother trying to win any of the contests like hot dog eating and the like, completely focused on getting her CHARACTER over with the fans. It worked.
Kelly has had every opportunity to get the fans invested in her matches. She’s been unsuccessful. Period. One minute backstage segments? Look at what Trish & Lita built one of those into in 2004. Neither was in the title picture at the time, and there were no plans to put them there.
A month later, Trish was Champion, and by the end of the year Trish vs Lita was headlining Raw.

You forget to mention how divas had charecters back then, in 2004 fans cared about Lita & Trish & just about all the women there. These days most women come out to crickets, the fact of the matter is both were already over & had well built personalities. I’m curious, what is on Lita’s level? She has no level in her wrestling, maybe Rosa Mendes or Jenna Morsaca are on her level (wrestling-wise). I’ve said any match she’s in is sloppy, in fact watch her suicide dive in the main event of raw in 2004. Girl almost killed herself or when she injuried herself in 2005, doing a thesz press! Yes, its total BS. Get it out of wrestling, except in rare cases. There used to be times in classic wrestling matches that it was alright to use occasionally. Like during a 15 minute+ match when wrestlers were having solid back and forth action and one got caught. That’s fine. The way WWE uses it for the Divas is predictable, overused, and innapropriate given most of their situations.
Most of the time during the classic matches it would have been a backslide or small package.

Lita looks amazing! I’m happy she got a great pop from the crowd. Was initially afraid at how the crowd will respond to her when she came out though, but I’m glad I was wrong. :)

More like pretty faces that are interchangeable. Otherwise, you wind up with someone like Trish who either outright refuses to do what you want her to, or you have to negotiate it into something she’ll agree to. You can’t de-push her for too long as punishment because the fans will just demand she be back in the top spot. You wind up with a couple of women who, in the last months of their contracts that they have no intention of renewing, say “What are they going to do, fire us?” (exact quote from Trish & Lita) knowing full well they’re not going to lose their top spots until they leave.
Only problem is, it’s women like that who MAKE the Divas marketable and a hugely profitable franchise by getting the fans to care about them and what they do. Mickie James & Melina are later examples. I can see how those four were a major headache for a micro manager autocratic type like Vince, but those are the people who are going to deliver the money for you that the interchangeable pretty faces can’t.
I wonder if the reason AJ doesn’t get a real push isn’t that Vince doesn’t realize he has the potential next Trish or Mickie with her, but that he FULLY realizes it.
But, he needs to put the autocrat aside and make what’s good for business the priority. Beth is like Victoria, fantastic as the foil for the Trish or Mickie, but she can’t just make a Kelly Kelly INTO a Trish or Mickie, any more than Victoria would have been able to make Stacy Keibler into that. Beth needs someone who has IT to have great feuds and matches with.

Some have develpoed more than others. Those who show improvement and desire should be welcomed by management and fans. Those who dont should be shown the door, or turned into valets.
Shame on WWE managment for sabotaging the division. Give them 5 minutes a show, minimum. It should not be difficult to free up that small amount of time. Let them wrestle the same as what they do at house shows.

It’s not why you got hired but what you do after. Kelly’s been there for five years, and still can’t run the ropes, cut a good promo, or look convincing facing Beth.
Kaitlyn has only been wrestling for ONE YEAR and she already looks more convincing facing Beth & Nattie than Kelly with all her years of experience. If she continues at her current rate, how good will Kaitlyn be this time NEXT year? Or the year after that?

I agree…I doubt there will be a Diva of the Year award cause I felt this award was just that…under a different name. If you noticed, when they went over the list, it wasn’t matches they were highlighting, but the diva herself. And while some of those moments may have been more impactful and cooler, I think the award was for the diva herself, and Kelly def seem to be the stand out Diva for the year. She seemed to be in Kharma’s radar until she had to leave, She won the Divas title for the first time, and her win was the start of this whole divas vs. models feud that gave some excitement to the division. I’m not the biggest Kelly fan but I think that was in the bag for her…

Yes, exactly. The Divas need to stand up backstage and say enough of this bullshit. Give us a chance or fire us. Unfortunately, I think many of them like things exactly the way they are. Do pretty much nothing, travel the world, and collect a nice check. Wrestling is but a small concern. The relationship is mutual, because that is just the way Vince and CO. see the Divas.
I love watching Diva house show matches. The matches are about 10 minutes usually, and the macthes are typically pretty strong from a techinical perspective.

It did bug me that if this were say taking place five years ago, a guest star legendary diva would’ve come out, done that segment and then they would’ve all had been pulled apart and it led to a match. It was weak. Ah well.

@Perceval Both Mickie and Victoria legends in their own right. i prefer Victoria to both Trish and Lita as a wrestler. A true shame the way WWE treated Victoria from 2004 on. I give both Trish and Lita their due concerning trendsetting and charisma. However, if Victoria received half their support from management she should have been a legend. However, WWE screwed up her gimmick terribly. Then had the audacity to basically make her a jobber for 4 YEARS. DESPICABLE.

@PERCEVAL Fabulous Moolah came back and had a 2 minute match against Victoria just because they were in her home state. That’s really what I was referring to…like, she was elderly and they still bothered to do something with it and it gave Victoria a great moment to be in the ring with Moolah.
Anyway I dont’ really care this is all silly. Kelly won, let’s be happy.

Mickie & Victoria weren’t legends, yet (that being December 2006). They are, NOW.
Oh, and they DID push Victoria as the main face of the Divas in 2004. It’s just that Lita & Trish got more crowd response for what they were doing than Vic & Gail were in their feud that was running at the same time. It was the FANS, not Management, that chose Trish vs Lita.
If they listened to fan response, today, AJ Lee would be getting a real push. Unlike Kelly, she gets her name chanted DURING her matches instead of people being quiet.

Predictability alone wouldn’t be so bad. After all, haven’t the Knockouts been utterly predictable from the moment Gail Kim’s WWE contract expired?
It’s the lack of quality on top of the predictability that’s the issue. We’ve known for weeks how last night’s KO Championship would go. Madison would interfere, costing Mickie the win. Is there anybody here who DIDN’T guess that?
But, it was still worth watching because it was a quality match built up with a series of quality matches. That makes all the difference.

YES. Quality and time are the important things. WWE gives the Divas no chance at either quality or time. They are sabotaging the division. They have done it before and are attempting to do it again. Ok, I just saw the clip! It was a lacklustre moment for the divas, but it’s wonderful to see Lita come out to her entrance music, nonetheless.
Since the award was for best Diva moment of the year, I would have preferred the Super Glam Slam to win, since the match with Brie Bella was mediocre at best, even if it was K2′s first title win. There is no doubt that Kelly has had a relatively exceptional year, but come on, how did a roll-up win best Diva moment? Not feeling it at all. The double-sharpshooter was also more exciting, imo. Congrats to Kelly, either way! No use in complaining about what’s already been done.

And how did I forget Kharma? The anticipation surrounding her debut was crazy! Her laying the smackdown on Michelle was also a moment more deserving of this award.
Again, I don’t want to take anything away from Kelly. If this had been for Diva of the Year, then, of course, K2 is the most likely candidate. However, I felt that she received the slammy because she’s the most recognized diva & not necessarily the Diva with the “best moment”. LOL, i’m done now. ;)
