Diva Dirt is pleased to announce today its expansion into covering women’s mixed martial arts (MMA), in addition to our coverage of professional women’s wrestling.

Much like our coverage of women’s wrestling, Diva Dirt MMA (http://diva-dirt.com/mma) will aim to bring fans of women’s MMA the latest news, analysis and interviews.

“Women’s MMA is hotter than ever and like female wrestlers, female fighters are bold, daring and courageous. We are excited to expand into another area of female grappling as we believe that all of these fighting females deserve coverage here at Diva Dirt,” said Editor-in-Chief Melanie Rob.

More news on our expansion into women’s MMA will be revealed this week, so keep your eyes pealed! Additionally, if you are interested in writing for Diva Dirt MMA, we are looking to add another one or two contributors. Details can be found here.

Keep up to date with Diva Dirt MMA by visiting http://diva-dirt.com/mma and following @DivaDirtMMA on Twitter.

I wouldn’t mind a “MMA for noobs, how does it work who’s in it” news. I always found it hard to understand how they schedule the matches.

Would Diva Dirt consider writing an Introduction to MMA article. Like what should we know? Who should we know? I’m not ashamed to admit that I haven’t the foggiest about it, but I would be really interested in getting to know the product.

Yes! There is far too little joshi news here. I’d like a weekly joshi news and results roundup here. It would make my cold and desolate heart happy haha!

Well, I could give a bit of an introduction to MMA. MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. It is the fastest growing combat sport in the world at present. It incorporates aspects of all martial arts and are competed under the unified rules of mixed martial arts. Basically, there is no eye gouging allowed, no shots below the belt, no fish-hooking and things of that nature. It has come a long way from the time it started, when it was pretty much two guys brawling with each other and anything went. Now, it is a legitimate sport and only people who know the right technique can compete in it.

MMA has three essential skills – striking, wrestling and submissions. These days, a competitive mixed martial artist must have a good understanding of all three aspects. Striking makes use of the more well known martial arts like karate, tae kwon do, boxing, muay thai, sambo, etc. Wrestling constitutes Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, judo throws, etc. Submissions make use of brazilian jiu-jitsu, catch wrestling, judo, etc. Now, the aim is to knock your opponent out, get your opponent to tap to a submission or win a decision (like in boxing).

I hope that was a good enough intro. There are lot more things to know about the sport, which you can know by watching it. Fights are set based on how many wins people have under their belt and things like that. The premiere MMA organization in the world is the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and they have about 90% of the world’s best fighters. They do not, however, have a women’s division. Strikeforce, which is also owned by Zuffa, which is the parent company of the UFC, has a women’s division and that is where women’s MMA gets the most exposure. The problem is that there aren’t enough talented women in MMA to have consistent matchups but I suspect that to change soon since more and more women and getting in to it.
