MMA: Strikeforce CEO Talks Tate vs Rousey, Says There’s a “Fan Base for Female Fighting”

Speaking to Univision following this past Saturday’s UFC 143: Diaz vs Condit, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker addressed the upcoming main event fight between Ronda Rousey and Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate.

Coker said that there is a fan base out there for women’s MMA based on ratings for previous female fights on Showtime. “”[On] Showtime, historically, when we have female fights on, the ratings are very good, so there is a fan base for female fighting and I think that this fight will do very well,” Coker said.

Speaking on the fight, Coker said: “This is most anticipated female fight in the history of Strikeforce, or I think [in] the history of female mixed martial arts, since the Gina Carano-Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ [Santos] fight that happened August of 2009.”

“I think that these women are great fighters and when you think about Ronda with the Olympic background — she’s a two-time Olympian and she [won a medal] in Judo in the last Olympics in Beijing.”

“Miesha’s coming off of a very big win against Marloes Coenen, who was champion at that time and a lot of the fans and media thought Miesha was going to lose that fight, and then she submitted her which has never happened to Marloes before.”

He adds: “Now you have two attractive girls about to fight, but don’t be deceived by their looks because these girls can really fight. They’re very fast, they’re dangerous, they’re explosive, and it’s going to be a great match-up on [March 3rd].”

Strikeforce: Tate vs Rousey takes place on March 3rd and will air on Showtime from 10pm ET.

I’m so hype for this fight- this is just about the second time in MMA history that two women have headlined a pay-per-view card like this. It’s also a super marketable fight for the casual fans- Miesha’s always been well-liked in MMA circles, and Ronda’s the tough, brash Olympian athlete whose four fights have all ended in her defeating her opponent by submission, all not lasting longer than 1 minute.

Seriously people, if you have any interest in women’s MMA at all, you need to watch this fight and show that there is an audience for this.

I like both women. Miesha’s got very good wrestling and submissions. Ronda is a badass – Olympic bronze medals in judo aren’t easy to get and supposedly, she got screwed over by a judge or else she could have won the gold. I am excited to see this fight. It is the best matchup that women’s MMA can have at the moment. I only wish Ronda had a bit more cage time under her belt – none of her fights have lasted more than a minute.

Rousey has this in the bag. The girl has clearly shown she can take you out at any point in the match, in any position. I really like Tate, I think move for move, she’s probably one of the more technically sound women in MMA, but Rousey definitely has her beat. She has easily beaten other women in under a minute, by letting them get the best of themselves.

Buying this for March 3rd, hope to see a new writer for MMA cover it.

Agreed 100%. However, Rousey needs a slight humbling IMO.

Ronda’s actually a pretty cool chick that speaks her mind. I think Miesha has better submission defense than all of Ronda’s previous opponents. So, it should be a good fight.

@Teri oh I agree. Cool chick, she does.

I just watched a few of Ronda’s matches and I am rooting for her. The two I watched are shorter than Divas matches but nonetheless her armbars are out of this world! Thanks for introducing this to me Diva Dirt!

I definitely think that there is a fanbase for women in MMA. I wish UFC would notice that haha.
