Our friend Arda Ocal over at The Score in Canada was joined by legendary WWE Diva Trish Stratus recently for a video interview.
In the first part of the interview (see below), Trish talks about the DVD release of her new movie, WrestleMania and the current gimmicks given to Eve Torres and Natalya.
Speaking on WrestleMania 28 and whether she might be involved, Trish says: “At this point it’s not in my calendar, but things change who knows. There’s a lot of very talented women right now that can do an amazing match at WrestleMania. I hope to see Beth Phoenix doing the pin up strong movement, because it’s been amazing to watch. But let’s just see what happens, you never know. I just hope there is a Divas match, even if I’m not in it.”
Addressing fans that say she’s had her time and shouldn’t be involved at ‘Mania, Trish agrees that she’s had her time and isn’t looking to take anyone’s spot, rather she sees it as an opportunity to aid the current generation of Divas and create new moments for the division. She also says she’d love to go back and work behind the scenes.
Regarding the Divas today, she says that the division “is just lacking the development we had. Everyone is asking me about Natalya, and Eve, and how controversial the angles are and can you believe it, in a negative way, but I look at it as a positive thing. Natalya is doing this flatulence gimmick, and there’s the hoeski gimmick for Eve. To me, this is just character development. Every time they’re out there, the audience has a chance to connect with them, and get more invested in them as characters and performers.”

Honestly, I've discussed this whole Rih situation ad nauseam!
But, mainly, I feel that, Rihanna, as a survivor of intimate partner violence, is the only one who can decide how she wants to heal, cope, move on from the violence perpetrated on her and if forgiving Chris Brown and working with him is something she needs to do for her peace of mind, than I respect that decision, because it is hers to make. Rihanna didn't sign up to be a poster child for domestic violence victims. Does her situation create some excellent talking points on the issue? Yes, of course. But people need to look at their own lives and communities and address the problem from the bottom up, instead of expecting a celebrity to be a victim for the rest of her life. Don't get me started on Chris Brown.

What Trish said about Eve’s character development through her heel turn is extremely true. I agree with her. What she said about Natalya’s gimmick…..eh…..I don’t know. If Natalya gets a mega push for going through this gimmick, as her reward , then it was worth it I might think.

What marco is trying to say, is that the divas today, the ones that bust their asses the whole, the ones go out there and perform ONEminute matches, could be as great as trish & the other girls from her era were. But they need the wwe to be completely behind them. If the wwe took the TIME & EFFORT , there wouldn’t be a problem and wouldn’t have bring in other former divas on big shows (like wm) to get PPV buys, or Crowd Reactions. Im sure that if the wwe developed these girls and made a BIG storyline (i.e trish vs mickie) I would be sure that we wouldnt be having this problem.

All i’m saying is that Trish is more likely to put on a 5 star match than most the divas and on par with Beth, Nattie & Kharma (Who in my opinion wouldn’t be at her best for this wrestlemania, due to pregnancy and welfare of the baby. We may not have seen the current divas shine as well, but they still don’t shine an inch of what Trish does with the time there given. Trish was given miniscule matches as well, but she brought her character across a million times more than the modern divas. I believe that the wrestlemania diva match should be a match of history and be a match that stays in peoples mind, with the exception of Beth and Nattie (Who are both heels) no other diva would provide as much as Trish. Its not about spots, its about who will put more and get more and who will put on the best match. I not saying that Trish is my first choice for Mania, but i 100% understand if WWE went that way, and no one should disrespect it, she’s a legend and she deserves it.

I think that’s the point that @BILLYGP is trying to make. The women of today have not received the push, time, or effort that Trish was given throughout her career. Thus the reason why the women mentioned in the latter have not gotten over or have crowd interest/support. This is why Trish is one the biggest stars the WWE has male or female, which is the reason why it would not be a bad idea to put her in Wrestlemania, from a business aspect.
You all are getting hyped over her taking the HYPOTHETICAL “spot” of ONE SINGLE diva that may or may not even get a spot at Wrestlemania w/o the appearance of Trish, when there is a buttload of women on the roster that bust their asses on the road that won’t recieve a spot either.
On the matter of her “totally flat” crowd reactions, I have to digress with that statement due to a broader view of things. Going back to the Elimination Chamber PPV, when Trish returned to take out LayCool, I remember the Twitter World going crazy over her appearance (Trending regularly). But people who no longer even follow wrestling were going on and on about how much they use to love Trish and how she used to be a “bad bitch” when they use to watch wrestling…essentially recognizing her as someone of admiration. I can not think of a single female that WWE currently has, that can be considered a star.
I wish just as much as all you naysayers, that the divas of today can be as huge and popular and credible as their predecessors, but if the best thing to do is to put Trish on the card then so be it. In terms of a perfect all around performer, Trish leaves all of the current women in the dust.

It was clear Laycool was going to be involved but so did Trish which was somewhat needed but this year she really isn’t needed. as much as i heart trish, i dont think trish should wrestle at WM but i won’t begrudge her if vince/steph asked her to have a dream money making match against nattie or beth which the womens wrestling purist fans would be excited about such as myself. the same goes for lita. when it comes to wrestlemania its the biggest ppv so botches and green talent affects half the divas division and trish is a experienced pro headlining name.
personally i dont care about the pops and spots, imo the divas division has sucked most of 2011 and not a single match has been above a 2/5 for me therefore i wouldn’t mind there not being a divas match.

God, I love this woman. LMFAOOOO The boots! I loved that part. Im happy that shes having the success she deserves. And let me add, this girl just doesn’t age! She’s as beautiful as always. Also, she brought up a point that cought my attention. That when she started to be on tv, the fans weren’t really into it, they just reacted to them as “puppies” . This is similar to now, the fans dont react to the divas at all, other than “piss breaks”. Then, the girls started to give them some substance for them to care about & not only the fans, but creative got behind it. And this is kind of what we’re seeing now. We have Natalya, that as nasty as her storyline is (I dont like it), this is a way for the crowd to react to her. Maybe shes a joke, but look at how far santino is getting, as far as crowd reactions go. Then we have AJ, who is also developing some character and getting noticed in this storyline with DBryan. Beth has also been on a roll, shes the dominant heel that is beating girls from left to right. And last but not least (I had to leave her for last) , miss Eve Torres, who undoubtably is getting some heat that not even most superstars get. This hoeski thing will get her far. And kinda like with trish stratus & the other girls, the fans & (hopefully) creative will get behind these girls.
Btw, I know that their is some sexist type of behaviors backstage. I know that its not like before, but hey Who Knows? ;)

The last real womens match we had with and actual build-up months of build up was Mickie James vs Trish Stratus. After that wwe took no time to even build-up or had future flans prior to WM to have a Womens Match that is actually credible. Even this year a couple of months ago wwe teased about a Beth & Natalya fued for the title. If they really wanted to seize the moment they could have started a little tension months ago.
Like having Natalya & Beth blow through the division. She aint lying is she. The most memorable divas have had a hoe gimmick. I know for a fact that natties fart gimmick is a first. It’s not what gimmick you are giving. Its about how you take that gimmick and run with it. Nattie and eve are doing an amzing job with the gimmicks. Because they are not given time to develop a character and having a farting gimmich WONT make the fans back you up for sure no matter how good you sell it (Nattie does indeed a great job with it and I laughed in the last segment aswell).
Eves character on the other side is a great opportunity and they are pushing her the right way for her to develop her character more so I agree to that.
As about “raising the bar”, I don’t know how you wanna raise the bar when the management doesn’t allow you to do certain moves in the ring, want you to be girly, slap and hairpull most of the time and all of that in 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
The way they are doing it, the fans can’t get behind the divas because to their eyes they are “useless” and a “waste of space” in the ring. -.-
As about mania, it would be better to use current divas.
Unless they make a surprise appearance and add a tag team like Trish and Lita vs Beth and Natalya while letting them go all out without movesets restrictions and other limitations.

I think so! Given her extremely close ties to Vince McMahon and creative, it would definitely work out for the better. I think the division needs a strong advocate who can relate to them and has strong backstage pull, like Trish Stratus. Look at all the things she did during her era. Many women have said Trish was the building ground for the division and helped the division a lot, because of her close relationships with WWE higher ups. She advocated and pushed hard for the women back then, so she sure as hell could do a great job with it now.

Both Trish and Lita were sloppy at times.
However, Lita had pulled harder moves since she worked as a high flyer while Trish was mainly a brawler that sticked to punches, kicks and slapping around most of the time.
Trish is indeed overrated in terms of in ring skills cause even she learned to be good after jackie, chyna, ivory, jazz and others carried her through the division, she never turned out to be one of the greatest in the ring.
So doing as if she was better than most of the girls today or the ones back then is bullshit.

I adore Trish, and the her outlook at things <3 She's very positive and always sees the glass as half full as than half empty. I think this just comes from her working in the business as long as she did. And I do agree that Eve, and even Natalya's, gimmick has potential to be something big – but I see Eve's gimmick having more potential simply because WWE has put more effort into Eve's gimmick as opposed to Natalya's so I don't see WWE really wanting to make Natalya's gimmick a "big deal," or anything.
I'd love to see Trish at Wrestlemania, but I don't think it's necessary for her to be in a wrestling position unless some sort of story is built. But the other girls, have really been working hard for it and working with what they've been given. So, even though it'd be great to see Trish go against one of the girls she hasn't worked with, it would also be really great to see – if the girls even get a spot – one of the *current* divas to get it.
