Today in History: Stephanie Thwarts Lita Again

On this day in history:

June 12th, 2000 | Stephanie McMahon was doing a pretty good job of avoiding directly facing Lita, the main challenger for her Women’s Title. So, when a match was made with the stipulation that any interference for Stephanie would earn Lita the belt, she had plenty of reason to worry. At the start of the match, it seemed that Lita had victory well within her grasp, but some well-timed referee distraction allowed Kurt Angle to show up and hit Lita with the Olympic Slam. Stephanie pinned Lita, and once again retained her title in questionable fashion.

Stephanie was one of my favourite Women’s Champions ever.

loved what went on between these two gotta admit it was pretty entertaining
wouldnt mind someone doing that again

Vickie could cheat the title from Layla while regaining her relevancy. She could have her stable help her and even hire a diva in it.

Exactly she would be perfect……her or rosa to be honest

That would be great for Rosa and Vickie. Pair them together and give Rosa and Primo and Colon something to do, get the audience invested in babyface Layla, etc…

    Oh, Stephanie…lol.

I remember how much I loved hating on her back then.

One thing I loved about Stephanie (and the entire McMahon family) is that unlike so many heels nowadays, they would get their commupance when the feud was over. Stephanie lost her title, Stone Cold got back at the whole family, Triple H humiliated her at the wedding. Stephanie always got hers in the end.

This was the first feud for women I watched and cared about. Had Lita not been in this storyline I’m not sure I would have cared. I do give Stephanie credit because she never had to get in the ring.

True cause when stephanie took the belt from jacqueline I didn’t care when lita was involved for the title I had more interest

This definitely helped kick off the women’s division in terms of fans truly caring. Stephanie had huge heat, Lita’s popularity was ever growing…it was just a perfect storm really.

Its pretty cool how their match for the womens title became the mainevent of RAW a few months after this.

I love the promo she did at the beginning of this match — it was *palpable* that the crowd wanted the belt off Steph! I think this is one of the best episodes RAW had that year; it started with Linda McMahon making tons of matches, including the KOTR main event six-man tag, and the Dudley Boyz vs. Vince & Shane in a tables match. I just love the hell out of this era.

One of my favourite women ever in the WWF/E hands down, I mean sure she started out terribly on the mic, but with time she grew into her roles and she become one of the best women to be apart of the company.
