Today in History: Trish and Jackie Gayda Compete in “That Match”

On this day in history:

July 8th, 2002 | Yes, it’s the infamous bout some refer to simply as “that match”. Trish Stratus teamed with Bradshaw to take on Jackie Gayda and Chris Nowinski in a match that seemed hell-bent on proving the validity of Murphy’s Law, at least as far as the Divas were concerned. It’s hard for any Diva fan to watch this match without grimacing, because it’s obvious that Trish and Jackie weren’t on the same page. Hell, as JR would say, they weren’t even reading the same book. Perhaps Jackie just wasn’t ready for prime time. Perhaps she was just having an off night. Either way, it’s in the books as one of the most cringe-worthy matches in Divas history.

    tHIS MATCH MAKE ME CRY

    • theprincedann

It just makes me feel really sorry for JBL :(

  • Jhonmarco

    I’m crying.
Dead at how Trish’s bulldog was sold at the end.
    I can’t.

    • pumped up kicks

I crenged thur this match! Soo bad for everyone involved!

  • shameronstar

This will probably be a worst match of the decade candidate along with Jenna Morasca vs Sharmell which was hilariously bad!

  • Johnyfaction3

Other bad matches that come to mind are:
    Anything involving Vickie
Kaitlyn vs Maxine during NXT 3
    Miss Wrestlemania Battle Royal

    • Raekon

Well at least the Kaitlyn vs Maxine was excusable since the girls didnt got any time to train for that match and the creatives let vickie to give kaitlyn the hoodie so they can blame the bad match to it.

According to insiders, the crew took way too long to prepare the ring for that evening in which the undertaker were supposed to come from down the ring and drag kane with him down there so the girls just got thrown into the show and had to improvise a few moves that one could blame the hoodie for so kaitlyn were trying hard to keep it over her head and maxine were trying to take “advantage” on it to win.

      • norisclouds

Jackie didn’t have time to train either. They put her out there with little to no experience, so really they got what they trained her for…comparably, Maxine and Kaitlyn had a lot more experience, but each one needed to be in there with a senior wrestler to work them through the match, not struggling to get through it together as two novices.

It was the company’s fault really. =/

        • Raekon

I agree on the companys fault cause they should had either cancelled the match or make something else out of it because of vickie instead of placing two girls in the ring letting them improvise something.

I also agree on maxines experience because at that time she was already for over 2 years in the company.
Unlike Kaitlyn that was just signed and had like 1-2 Months experience if at all.

    • funkyweapon a-gogo

You can’t put Vickie in the bad matches. She’s shenanigans like Bobby Heenan was. I disagree with that.

But Jenna Vs Sharmell was just bad and Jenna made it look as fake as possible. It’s just as Bad as Vince Russo Vs Booker T for the World Title in WCW when Russo put the title on himself in his hometown.

    • WWFoverWWE

Don’t forget Sharmell vs. Jenna Morasca :D

    • http://Www.Facebook.com/StuartWilliamMcKay StuartWilliamMckay

Gail Kim Vs Mickie James – Divas Championship !

  • GetFoxy

i have never seen this before but it is now mt fave match of all time i think i almost died laughing haha was jackie still employed after this.

    • http://jakeyon.blogspot.com Jakey

Yes, but she was taken off TV and sent back to OVW. She didn’t come back until a year later, when she was Rico’s valet and re-packaged as “Miss Jackie”.

  • mr_socko

despite its awfulness, the crowd were more into this match than pretty much any other diva match we’ve seen in a fair while

  • Raekon

Lol! Botch, after Botch, after Botch! ^_^

Oh well… even it was one of the worst matches since both Trish and Jackie botched, it still had its good spots here and there.

  • RedHotVixen

I know right?! During that time the crowd was always ALIVE. That’s why I love going on YouTube to watch WWE women’s matches from the late 90s to mid 2000s. I think that also helps the women in the ring; when they hear the crowd get into the match they are motivated to give their all. Now, when the crowd is silent the match suffers. Can you imagine how unnerving it must be when you are in the ring trying your best and the audience is practically in a coma? I’m sure that knocks their confidence.

Anyway this match was just…ugh. And Trish looked furious at the end. To quote JR “Mercifully, it’s over.”

    • RedHotVixen

I was trying to reply to Mr_Socko btw. Damn phone….

  • xX-Zoey-Sky-Xx

The rage on Trish’s face at the end said it all. I remember watching it when I was younger and I like that red top girl messed up!

  • lareeDDT

Didn’t Trish say, after this match she burst into tears backstage!

    • norisclouds

Jackie did too, and it wasn’t Jackie’s fault…she had no training and they just put her out there. It wasn’t like Trish was Victoria. She didn’t have the strength or power moves to just work another woman through a match she needed someone who could work with her. It was the booker’s fault.

  • redsandman99

Oh god that was so bad. Rapid miscommunication and Jackie’s selling was atrocious. Forget them not even reading the same book. Trish was reading the book and Jackie was like…not even in the library.

    • Jhonmarco

Dead at your final sentence! I concur.

    • lelloo7

lmao at the last sentence !!

    • http://facebook.com/mykael.kennedy mykel1990

I was weak at that last sentence. Lol

    • Like Mike

More like Jackie didn’t even have the ability to read >_<

  • lelloo7

seriously? I don’t know who jackie is but it’s unfair to blame her… most of the botches were done by Trish !! she barely touched jackie’s hair… she got tied up between the ropes, she fell and made jackie fall….

    • norisclouds

They were both terrible and Jackie didn’t have any training. People are unfair to her when they watch this (because she had no training) and as usual they overrate Trish’s work and ignore the mistakes that were made on both sides.

    • WweLitafan4ever

most of the botches were done by trish & no-one is saying anything?
      well,there’s a shock..

      • Crazy_J

lol, i love that comment litafan.

        • WweLitafan4ever

          Lol thanks

  • Lita-Sault-666

Lets not play the blame game, I’m sure both Jackie & Trish take some responsibility in the mistakes made in this match. It is very cringy worthy as a lot of people have said, thankfully J.R points out before the match starts that Chris & Jackie are from Tough Enough and very green….. hah.

  • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

Is what it is…sh** happens in the ring haha Jackie sucks though. Meantime the Jessica morrasco match was bad but she’s one hot bitch!! And Jackie n trish had a bra n panties match in 2003 that was pretty good match with lots of action n lots of thongs n stuff hell even Rico got stripped down to a thong for u ladies n u guys haha

Btw Vickie vs Kate was awesome!! Maxine n Kate also roll in good hard hitting matches so whatever

Jackie just straight up sucked she didn’t want to wrestle and in 2 years she only had about 3 matches on tv against Stacey n dawn Marie wich were bad on her end

  • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

Also blaming trish is no good. Call her overrated that’s BS. She was at her prime here and growing after facing Jazz trish was awesome yes Jackie was very green n new but take a look at Linda miles on smack down who faced ivory on velocity and had a great match Linda just showed more interest in wrestling than Jackie did. Ashley Masaro showed more interest in getting in the rig than Jackie did bro.. While stupid hater comments I trish is beneath her it’s idiotic to completely bring trish down. Jackie said I an interview that This match was random and last minute and that she asked trish for advice and trish just said “I got u” . Jackie herself Said she panicked during those spots.
It’s forgivable she’s new. Jbl o the other hand ate her up hahahaha.

I dislike miss Jackie not based on this match but her overall career in wwe. She was athletic, very sexy, great muscle bod, she had the physical attributes to be a diva and be successful but she had no desire to wrestle. She however could throw a great cat fight while throwing hard right hands along with dawnmarie haha those were awesome

    • Jhonmarco

She was at her prime in 2002?
      Rofl.

      • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

Hahaha naaaa…dude she was taking hits n beatings all year long from jazz Molly Victoria a few guys so whatever man.

    • Raekon

Actually she had the desire to wrestle, otherwise she wouldn’t had gone to the indies, TNA and afterwards to the indies again.

However, the one match I saw from her in 2011 wasn’t as good either so all I can say is that the only real good thing she got from her WWE time was her husband. ^_^

Wrestlingwise no matter how hard she trains and tries, she is stuck in a “partially decent” category.

      • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

Beats me. I don’t care for her run in tna or the indies she made no mark whatsoever, she played no part in building the knockouts division, thy was traci brooks n Gail Kim. And while she was in wwe she was of Zero use.

        • JamieKym

But you no right saying Jackie had no desire to wrestle. She had more passion for wrestling than Linda. This is coming from someone who routed for Linda to win Tough Enough. Plus, Linda had a better chance because she faced Ivory. Trish at that time was decent but still learning. If she didn’t have a desire to wrestle, she wouldn’t have lost that baby weight quick just to wrestle again.

  • Lovedaddio

I remember this match. If my memory serves me correctly it took place exactly one week after the finale of that year’s Tough Enough on MTV. I think that was the year that Linda “Shaniqua” Miles won but Jackie Gayda was still offered a contract. During the competition she struiggled even with the basics and her conditioning was an issue.

Clearly WWE was trying to capitalize on her exposure from Tough Enough but as has been said, the girl simply was entirely too green to be put into a high profile match on RAW like that. WWE has learned there lesson because other than Gail Kim who was already a full trained wrestler, who has just jumped right onto the main roster like that?? Even trained girls like AJ, Serena Deeb, and more recently Paige and Sofia are being required to hone their skills which is how it should be.

    • http://twitter.com/BroskiRomano Ryan

That’s very true bro. I liked how they did with eve torres. Her first Match vs mccool was pretty great!! Ashley got sent straight into the ring after winning lol poor ash xp
Not to mention Jackie’s match was randomness spontaneous lol
So even with training it would of been bad because last minute things don’t run smooth

    • Bobby-james

No – Linda Miles and Jackie Gayda were the winners of Tough Enough. It was believed that ONE guy and ONE girl would win (2 winners) – instead, Jackie won over the guys, crowning 2 female victors of that season.

    • http://jakeyon.blogspot.com Jakey

It wasn’t a week after TE, but very damn close. Jackie had worked a few tag matches before this one (Trish Stratus & Linda Miles def. Jackie Gayda & Ivory on a June 2002 Smackdown ep, and Trish Stratus & Linda Miles def. Jackie Gayda & Molly Holly on the RAW after King of the Ring), and they wanted to push her because, unlike Linda, she fit the cookie-cutter mold of what WWE thought “sexy” looked like. After this match, neither Linda nor Jackie appeared on WWE TV for over a year, and in re-packaged roles.

  • WWFoverWWE

I just loved the way jackie sold the bulldog LMAO

  • http://aksanahq.com Aksana

Best Diva’s match, of all time. All competitors should be proud.

  • shannymac

Trish’s face as she leaves the ring says it all.

  • JamieKym

I hate when people label Jackie as a horrible wrestler which she is not. She just one bad match but had two great matches with Trish weeks before this. Trish said she started crying backstage after this match and so Did Jackie.

  • http://ashmultimedia.wordpress.com melon2617

I think this match was just a lot of miscommunication. Jackie was never a strong in ring competitor but an adorably cute manager and I loved her with Rico.

I don’t doubt that she loves wrestling, but Jackie was never really good at it. You can love something and still not be good @ it. I LOVE bowling! Love, love, love bowling, but I am horrible @ it, bowl a score of 12 and never win ever. That doesn’t mean that I don’t love it. Too many times people confuse passion with being good at it. Just because you want to do something with all of your heart and soul doesn’t mean that you’re good @ it, just ask the 17 kids who get cut from the football team.

    • Jhonmarco

      Beautifully put!

  • AdrianRay

Trish hit the back of Jackie’s head pretty hard. A very believable three count.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/JillianHallTNA TNAknockoutJillianHall

      AHAHAHHA LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xDDD

  • http://www.tpwprowrestling.freeforums.org Juan

im laughing so hard right now!! So many botches!!!

  • http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/WWE_Divas/ art

Jackie was green & trish never/couldn’t carried anyone with skill less then her own…
I always laugh at trish running herself into the ropes LOL..just showed how fake wrestling is…..
Linda miles was alot better then jackie….

  • Future-Knockout/Diva

I think Trish tried her best in that match, the men did okay, as for jackie in my opinion she was never a good wrestler, to me she was eye candy and a valet and nothing more, now for the match i would blame the booker she obvisouly wasn’t ready to wrestle and hasn’t had any training they do that with alot of the divas i feel sorry for them it happened to jackie, ashley and more.
