NXT Watch (August 1st, 2012): Latina Heat Faces the Country Queen

Yee haw, and welcome to this week’s NXT Watch. I’m deathly tired right now since the episode did not leak Thursday morning like I anticipated, but nonetheless, I am here to do some recapping so some recapping I shall do. This week on NXT, perhaps the most notorious FCW Divas rivalry of the past year resurfaces, as Raquel Diaz squares off against Audrey Marie. Will Audrey be the next victim in her “Exfoliating Ugliness” Tour? Or will Audrey Marie, more commonly known as equal to me what Dolph Ziggler is to Cryssi, debut with a victory? And what does our sinister Brit, Paige have to say about all of this?! There’s only one way to find out, so scroll down your mouse in three… two… one. Go!

We are treated to a match graphic of Raquel and my Country Queen, Audrey Marie. After the break, we return to some new hoedown music and clips of Audrey posing with some cowgirl beltbuckle nameplate. Oh wow, maybe they’re going to turn Audrey back into the cowgirl she debuted as talking about grandma’s and cows. Well, if they are then Audrey didn’t get the memo because she looks nothing like a cowgirl tonight. Va va voom! Audrey walks out and I immediately become enraged with the crowd for not giving her a standing ovation. She steps into the ring as it’s mentioned that she’s a certified accountant… and thus the days begin until Audrey’s three facts of doom present themselves to a nearby commentary table every single time she steps into the ring.

After some tremendous standing in the ring, out comes “Guess whooooo”, Raquel Diaz. She lets out a cackle and claims that Audrey doesn’t know how to work a ramp, which I take great offense to because the Country Queen did a fine job. Diaz calls her a mamacita and fixes her hair in the camera lens, before stepping into the ring and letting us know that the Exfoliating Ugliness Tour commences… now. Audrey makes a great face to the camera as the bell sounds and we kick things off with Raquel vs. Audrey for the billionth time.

They lock up and Audrey applies a headlock that she keeps maintained for a good long while despite Raquel trying to fight out. Finally Diaz fights out and drops Audrey on the ropes in a pretty nasty way. She only gains a two count, as Raquel applies some form of submission move. Diaz slams Audrey into the canvas and stomps on her head, before continuing this dismantling of Audrey. Marie finally shows some signs of life, as Raquel drops her with a type of drop toe hold. Diaz then goes off on Audrey, before Marie flips over into a jackknife. They bridge around before Audrey flips out. She goes for a kick, but misses and Raquel spanks her on the butt. From there, the crowd doesn’t seem to be on the side of Raquel to put it lightly, as she plants Audrey with the Gory Bomb for the win. After the match, Diaz paints the letter “L” on Audrey’s forehead with her lipstick, before we head to the back where Briley Pierce asks Paige about Raquel’s “tour”. Paige simply says “Raquel Diaz… Ugliness Tour… We’ll see”. Interesting!~

Thoughts: I’m pretty iffy on the segment/match overall. While I’m not the biggest fan of this new NXT, it’s somewhat improving from where it was when it started. Now it’s sort of hit or miss and just “there.” I liked that both got entrances, the match didn’t feel ridiculously short, and we even got some mic time with Raquel and Paige. I didn’t really care for the match in itself though, but I’ve seen them face off I feel a hundred times so it’s kind of entered that territory where I can’t pay attention to anything (aside from Audrey).

In terms of Raquel, I enjoy her mic work. Her persona is interesting to say the least, but at least it’s different I guess. That’s where I feel Audrey falls behind unfortunately. I clearly love Audrey, and I think she has that natural look to become a crowd pleaser without even needing to have an over the top character, but she still needs something to make her spark. She’s just sort of there with no identity. I feel that’s why a lot of fans don’t draw to her as easily as some of the other Divas because she’s just sort of smiley and happy go lucky. I don’t think Audrey is that bad in the ring though. To be honest, I think she’s a lot better than Raquel, but strictly being a wrestler with no identity is pretty hard to do on a main roster ala Gail Kim’s WWE run. I liked the random face Audrey made during Raquel’s entrance though, and I feel that she’s working hard to improve her game… but without chances to showcase who she is aside from bubbly and smiley, there’s not much that can help fans connect with her since her look somehow doesn’t win them all over like it does me.

Raquel is sort of the opposite for me. I think she has personality and it’s easy for fans to dislike her when she cuts a promo. In ring wise, I’m not really a fan. But personally, I’ve never held the belief that everyone has to be a wrestler. Some people can shine as managers, and Raquel did that when I saw her at FCW last weekend. She does well when paired with a male superstar, and I think she could benefit one of them if they team up. I feel Corey Graves is a star through every aspect in his own right, but I’m kind of biased to wanting them together since that was who she managed last weekend and it clicked really well.

Nonetheless, I’m not quite sure where NXT is heading, which is my one big problem left with the show. There’s so many people they’re trying to spotlight that you can have someone hyped up with videos for weeks, debut, and then not be seen or heard from for another five weeks. I don’t even know what the Paige interview is leading to unless they have more backstage segments planned because as far as I know, the two don’t even meet up down the road. Who knows though? They’re at least picking the quality up since it began, and Rome wasn’t built in a day so maybe down the road it’ll get better. I’m still not 100% on board, but I’m at least interested enough to continue on.

Basically you just favor Audrie for what ever reason. I know you clearly favor Audrie, but bottom line the girl sucks. Raquel is way more entertaining and you have to accept it.

Regarding the show itself how you don’t like this new NXT is crazy. The old show was a joke with foolishness and the only bright spot was Maxine and Percy Watson (don’t know where he is). I love the new NXT because its serious. There taking it serious and putting on good matches. Having a tournament to determine the 1st NXT champion is where the show is headed. Obviously there gonna do a Paige Diaz feud which should be fun. The was ok but the over all product of NXT involving the there Divas is fun to watch each week

    • Bobby

Do I like Audrey more? Yes. We’re all allowed to have our favorites and that’s perfectly fine. Do I think Raquel is more entertaining than Audrey? Yes. I never said she wasn’t. I even wrote a whole paragraph saying Raquel shines in the entertainment factor where Audrey doesn’t lol. I just feel Audrey’s better in the ring, which is my own opinion.

      • http://www.facebook.com/thesensational1 Sherri Martel Appreciation Page

Well said Bobby and you’re opinion is spot on! Raquel needs to improve a hell of a lot if she is ever to benefit the diva’s division.

    • CW

To be fair to Bobby, he did make a valid argument. Audrey is ahead of Raquel in terms of ring work, whereas Raquel works better with the theatrical aspects. Its not like he ran Raquel through the dirt, he just stated obvious fact.

  • redsandman99

I definitely wasn’t a fan of this match. Audrey and Raquel don’t gel in the ring. Raquel just doesn’t seem cut out for wrestling and Audrey is nowhere near the level needed to hide Raquel’s weaknesses. I do like that Raquel has a character at least. Poor Audrey is stuck in the role of bland smiling babyface.

  • Johnyfaction3

Audrey reminds me of a face Michelle McCool…and is the first time I hear a “YOU CAN’T WRESTLE” chant on a Divas match. haha.
I feel like Raquel should tone down a bit, i feel like sometimes she comes off as she is trying too hard for her character.

  • koshiro

    The match was just ok.
The “YOU CAN’T WRESTLE” chants were because she botched the finisher, so they needed to re-tape it =P It was fun how she reacted after hitting it right..

I like the direction they are going with this new NXT. They are adding pieces of rivalries, starting feuds, quick segments. It’s getting better each week.

Maybe there’ll be a championship for the Divas too?

  • TheJoJoIsCrazy

Not hating on your girl Bobby, so I’m gonna start saying something nice. I don’t know why but I have an odd feeling Audrey might be called to the roster soon or used as the main Diva on NXT. Just a feeling…
In my opinion Raquel is not as bad as everyone maes her and in this m,atch it shows Audrey isn’t really good at telegraphing the moves.
I was entertaind and it seems they’re taking NXT as a serious grounds. I like it.

    • Bobby

Positivity and fair criticism?! I applaud this comment!

  • AfroJack

Raquel pls stay away from a wrestling ring, that match was disappointing. Where da hayull are Caylee and Summer!?!?

  • KillerBee

Is Raquel like the one diva Beautiful People now?

  • Marlon Eric

Audrey Marie got some nice (new?) tatas..

    • WWFoverWWE

It’s either that or she’s wearing a pushup bra xD

      • http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/WWE_Divas/ art

she got bigger boobs..shes not wearing a bra…

  • Marlon Eric

Damn, WWE really *need* to have an uber-materialistic, bitch, “Beautiful People” gimmick in every generational era doesn’t it?

Laycool and Maryse were the most recent incarnations. Now Raquel..can they trrrry to think of something else than Default Heel Diva Gimmick #1?

    • Kayfabe!

those kind of characters make great heels though, who doesn’t love a bitch lol

    • Jake

Same could be said for the default crazy chick. Sherri, Luna, Victoria, Mickie, and now AJ. Also, the Goth gimmick has been used by Ariel, Katie Lea, Raquel at one point and now Buggy Nova.

Don’t understand why fans only get hung up on the beauty gimmicks.

      • http://Www.Facebook.com/StuartWilliamMcKay StuartWilliamMckay

Ariel and Raquel were vampires, not goths ! but i get what your saying

        • Jake

Vampires fall into the gothic category.

      • Marlon Eric

You don’t have to understand shit Jake. It’s annoying to me therefore it’s understood by me.

  • shameronstar

The match wasn’t that bad, although it’s better than their previous encounters in fcw so I guess that’s not saying too much, but they should really stop have Raquel and Audrey wrestle each other all the time because its like Kelly Kelly vs The Bella Twins all over because when 2 people with bad chemistry to low to mediocre skill compete the rate for improvement is lowered by A LOT. Now Raquel’s match with Paige was good because Paige was experienced and skilled enough to help Raquel much better. Audrey can hold her own well enough but isn’t seasoned enough to carry a match with someone of limited in-ring ability!

P.S. – I wonder how Tenille, Buggy, Ashley, and Anya are going to debut on NXT?

  • DjayDay

Very good points there Bobby. Raquel definitely shines in the entertainment department, I mean the girl oozes charisma. She’s just lacking in the ring. She cannot keep up. Shell have it one day, she has some grasp on the basics. She’s a Guerrero, it’ll come in time. As for Audrey, I can’t hate on the girl. She is good for how green she is, however for her rapid improvements, it wasn’t very intelligent for them to stick her with Raquel. She’s not polished enough. I never get why they stick two green people in the ring together. In context in makes sense because it is NXT, but why not put Sofia or Caylee, since Paige all ready faced off against her. I must say I feel Audrey getting called up within the next year. Something just says she will.

  • WWFoverWWE

The match was pretty awful. Raquel need to be carried and Audrey isn’t capable of doing that.

  • Jake

Audrey isn’t all that bad for a girl who has only been wrestling for a year. I agree with Bobby about her not having a spark. I felt the same about AJ when she made her FCW debut. She was very generic until she turned heel and was given some mic time. Then when she was on Season 3 of NXT, that also helped greatly.

Raquel is over-the-top but I actually like that about her.

  • unscripted & flawless

I have absolutely no idea why people are bitching about the new NXT. I know we all have our own opinions and we all have our own likes, but we have literally not seen a WWE Divas match in WEEKS on the main brands. Every match that has been on Superstars has been CUT, there’s been NO diva whose two initials are not AJ in any type of matches, and I’m not even sure if Smackdown knows it has 5 divas, one being the Divas Champion, on their roster. So with all due respect to everyone with their opinions, just shut up and enjoy the fact that SOMEWHERE in the WWE we are getting consistent Divas matches, and even a build-up to something that I hope becomes a huge feud on NXT, because I’ve always seen Raquel/Paige being amazing people to feud with each other, and if done correctly and carefully, could usher in the new Trish/Lita era. Paige has the ring skills, just like Lita, and Paige has the mic skills, just like Trish. And don’t mistake this comment for me saying Paige and Raquel are equal to Trish & Lita, I’m just saying they have the most potential out of any of the women employed at WWE to make that kind of feud happen and keep it going.

And even if this doesn’t lead up to something, just like I don’t believe Natalya attacking Sofia Cortez will lead up to something – oh well. At least we got that one moment to remember rather than nothing.

    • redsandman99

I will take this moment over the nothing we’ve gotten the past two weeks on Raw and god knows how long on Smackdown. Just like I’ll take finally getting the Layla vs Natalya match on Superstars. Is it right that we should just take what we’re given? No becasue the girls deserve more opportunities than that. But I’ll take a potential Raquel/Paige feud on NXT over absolutely nothing at all.

      • unscripted & flawless

Absolutely, and that’s what I’m saying. I’m not really saying to stop complaining about the match quality, because even I agree this wasn’t the best we’ve seen so far on NXT Season 6 compared to Sofia v. Natalya, Raquel v. Paige, etc. etc…but I would like for everyone to stop saying they don’t like the new NXT because it’s boring, there’s no storylines, the matches are random and lead to nothing…like seriously? Be glad we’re getting a divas match at all is all I’m saying, yanno?

        • redsandman99

I know. Like I understand if people aren’t a fan of this and that but at least acknowledge that something is being given. I’m not a fan of Raquel’s in ring work but out of all the girls, she’s got the most defined character and the most potential for a storyline if they don’t touch on the Sofia/Natalya thing from last week.

    • Bobby

I didn’t even think about it like that, but you’re right. Writing these early in the morning leaves me bitter, cranky, and forgetful lol. Definitely going to see it the way you do from now on. Thanks for the input =)

  • LadyGoDiva

Raquel Diaz has a whole lot of attitude.Despite her wrestling was a little off.

  • Hands.ofthe.Wicked

Despite what everyone else is saying – I think Raquel is great! She radiates personality! And shes not as ‘awful’ as people make her out to be in the ring…. Audrey is more like furniture, just there. She needs something to stand out.. she has a generic look, and move set. If anything, with the country girl name Audrey Marie… I thought they would have her kinda be like this generations Mickie.. Daisy dukes, cowboy boots, plaid shirt. Even though it’s a recycled gimmick (what isn’t in wrestling these days) It would make her stand out from just that generic diva mold.
All in all the match was average, I like the gory bomb finisher from Diaz though. And her promo skills, and her cackling laugh is amaze! Given more experience and time, both girls will be awesome!

    • http://youtube.com/kristalmelinafan kristalmelinafan

Like i said before not all girls are meant to wrestle and wwe needs to remember that some of their girls needs to be managers. They have the right idea for Rosa and Cameron now do the right thing for some of the others.

  • http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/WWE_Divas/ art

These two just dont click..both need to wrestle people with more experience…
audrey got some new boobs so i guess she wants to be noticed by wwe…i think shes kinda plan looking & doesn’t have alot of charisma….

    • http://youtube.com/kristalmelinafan kristalmelinafan

It’s not that they don’t click it’s the fact that Audrey is just not ready to be on tv yet she needs a lot of practice not saying Raquel is the best but when it comes to it she has more charisma than Audrey and better ring presence. Now Raquel needs to perfect her arsenal and her bumps and acting ablitiy she is not ready for prime time either. The only one is ready imo i hate to be one of the masses but Paige is the one to go to and the only one other than Caylee Turner to be on the main roster.

      • French.One

There is a reason why you don’t see Caylee, it’s because she’s bad …

    • Jake

How in the hell could Audrey get new boobs when she wrestles every week? She probably already had them. It wasn’t like she was flat chested before.

      • Marlon Eric

She doesn’t “wrestle every week”. There’s plenty of downtime between the last and final FCW tapings and these new NXT tapings that she could’ve had breast augmentation. Hell, there’s even a few weeks between regular NXT tapings since they tape three or four weeks’ worth of shows in one-sitting.

        • Jake

FCW has house shows every week and Audrey is apart of most of them, if not all. Breast implants take several weeks to heal and there is no way she just got them. She always had big boobs.

  • javiousmckenzie

Raquel looks a mess she give me Joseline from Love & Hip Hop a hot mess her gimmick is blah to me it don’t fit her at all since she is the least attractive diva in NXT

    • http://myspace.com/bigdogpimp20 Kantrell

You serious?! Wow ok..ima act like I didn’t see that -___-

      • javiousmckenzie

Not saying she look like Joseline saying she is a hot mess a train wreck you love to watch but as far as her gimmick goes it dont suit her those tatts her weight that messy weave its like girl how you talking bout you ending ugliness etc when most the girls you in the ring with look better than you

        • http://myspace.com/bigdogpimp20 Kantrell

Lol tbh, I thought you said she looked like her my bad..read it to fast. But I totally agree with you

  • http://youtube.com/kristalmelinafan kristalmelinafan

Layla and Natalya had an awesome superstars match which in my opinion was a ppv quality match.

    • number1AngelinaLovefan

I know i really loved that match.it was great,I just wish Natalya would of won

    • Raekon

Yep I loved the match because it had tons of character and charisma involved.

Wrestlingwise it was ok but not really spectacular since they both were focusing more on playing the characters than wrestling but still awesome to watch. :)

  • javiousmckenzie

Paige is giving me all of Victoria when she 1st debuted i can not wait for her to get called up to the main roster

  • http://youtube.com/kristalmelinafan kristalmelinafan

When Audrey was coming out i was so looking to hear “Hardcore!!!! Country!!!” lol

    • number1AngelinaLovefan

Oh my god i know. She is going to be the new “Mickie”

  • French.One

The FCW trainers suck. They both have been training for more than a year and they’re not able to pull something decent … it’s disappointing …
I don’t know what’s going on there, but I don’t see any successfully full FCW trained diva those last years …

As for Raquel, she can talk but she’s not making people react and if she does not improve the way she talks (ie talking to the people instead of talking for herself) she will crash on the main roster …

The match was interesting because it shows none of these two are ready for the main roster (I would give it another year).

    • Jake

That’s not that bad for a year’s worth of training. Not everybody can be like Naomi.

      • WWFoverWWE

And if you are like Naomi, you’ll end up dancing instead of wrestling. WWE is just hopeless.

        • Jake

I’d rather her dance than disappear from television like so many other divas.

    • DjayDay

Sorry, but for a little over a year there both improving greatly, the match was poor for the same exact reason though. They should not be putting two women with a years training in the ring together, it doesn’t do anything for either that’s the problem. FCW training has went through a metamorphosis in the last 6-8 months. The developmental staff is the best it’s been since OVW days. If you go look at some FCW/WWE house shows, Raquel and Audrey are pretty good in the ring.

      • Bobby

I second that as well. The Divas, FCW at least since I’ve never been to a WWE live event but I hear the same for those, perform so differently on house shows compared to these short TV matches. It’s a shame, but understandable through time constraints and everything.

Also agree with putting two women still relatively new to training together. Audrey and Raquel will not get better by facing each other three billion times haha. I’m excited to see how Tenille, Buggy, and especially Sara eventually do with the lesser experienced women on the developmental roster.

  • wl75

Raquel has great charisma- she can be a heat magnet like her mom. Wrestling though is ehh…

  • queennattie

Am I the only one who is deeply annoyed by how horrible and obvious Raquel’s extensions are!? Where did she buy them? At a drug store?

  • queennattie

Oh and did Paige lose her accent? Lol.
