Today in History: Lita Loses Her Baby

On this day in history:

September 13th, 2004 | Lita, having been impregnated by and married against her will to Kane, was not thrilled to be dragged to ringside for his match against Gene Snitsky. She even interfered in the match, stopping Kane from hitting Snitsky with a gruesome chair attack. Kane backed Lita into a corner, and Snitsky took the moment to attack Kane, unwittingly causing him to fall on top of his pregnant wife. Immediately, Lita felt something was wrong, and she was carted into an ambulance and sent to the hospital. Kane, genuinely concerned, followed. News would soon surface that Lita had suffered a miscarriage as a result.

This storyline bugged me on a million & one levels. First of all, she wouldn’t have been that big for 3.5 months along. Two. They wouldn’t know the gender @ 3.5 months along. 3. She wouldn’t have been hooked up to machines & needed oxygen & WHY THE EFFING EFF WOULD A PREGNANT WOMAN BE AT RINGSIDE! Not to mention a DNA test couldn’t be done until about 16 weeks so they wouldn’t know who the dad was either.

I remember her promos about feeling the baby kick & I was like “You’re not even out of your first effing Trimester! That baby ain’t kicking!” Sorry, but as a mom I found the whole thing ridiculous, like you couldn’t have googled pregnancy & figured this out? Male writers. Ugh.

But it really wasn’t Snitsky’s fault. It was totally Lita’s. She got into a wrestling ring, beat up Trish, etc, knowing she was pregnant. Irresponsible with that sack of flour she was.

It bugs me on soaps too!

It just makes me annoyed when writers can’t google something like “pregnancy” & find out this stuff. At least with “injuries” they follow some sort of normal timeline. Suspended disbelief is one thing, this was just…ugh. I thought it was stupid then & it’s still stupid IMO. Kudos to Lita for pulling it off though.

You can crap on this storyline now, but at the time it did good ratings for WWE and got a lot of speculation online. It was still a terrible idea, and the execution failed in the end with the whole real life drama affecting the story, but at the time this was going on, I remember even the wedding between Kane and Lita did well in the ratings.

Would somebody tell me WHY Lita, one of the best female wrestlers in the company, was put into to a pregnancy storyline? If she had an injury they were trying to hide, I’d understand. Otherwise, it made no sense to put her in an angle that would keep her out of the ring. This was just another example of how WWE let their women’s division go to hell in 2004.
