On this day in history:

October 19th, 2004 | The first Taboo Tuesday PPV brought with it the first “Fulfill Your Fantasy” Battle Royal, in which the fans voted for the costumes the Divas would wear while competing. The fans voted for schoolgirl outfits, so the Divas came clad in plaid skirts and knee-high socks. Did I mention that the Women’s Title was on the line? Yes, champ Trish Stratus defended her title against Gail Kim, Jazz, Molly Holly, Nidia, Stacy Keibler and Victoria while they all wore the “fantasy fulfilling” outfits. Skirt or not, Trish competed like she was the champ, eliminating Molly last to retain her title.

I remember watching this and I kept thinking Stacy was going to win after she almost eliminated Trish

From what people have said, Stacy was originally booked to win this match. As she was arguably the most popular woman in the company, WWE was planning on giving her a reign as Women’s Champion and that’s why Stacy kept going over on Molly Holly on TV (as well as Gail Kim and Jazz on the house shows) – they were trying to give her credibility. The day of the match, Stacy told WWE she wasn’t a wrestler and didn’t deserve to be champion, prompting them to keep Trish as champ.

How do you know WWE was planning on giving her a reign? You in cahoots with the creative team?

Stacy was originally scheduled to win this, but she turned the opportunity to become champ down, saying there were other women who deserved it more.

    Such a class act.

Wow you really have to respect that

    Lita-Sault-666 Reply:

Yes i remember her saying that in an interview. I wouldn’t have minded her winning it tbh, she was a great character and very over!

    perceval Reply:

You wouldn’t have minded bad matches, and the Trish-Lita feud being dropped? No Survivor Series, Raw main event, etc?

Just goes to show that Trish & Lita were successful DESPITE Management & Uncreative. Management was doing their best to sabotage them and the Women’s Division.

Can you imagine her as champ??
I don’t think I would have liked it

    YouCanLookButYouCan'tTouch Reply:

OMG really? I honestly wouldn’t have minded that, even if it was just a one month reign. I’ve always wished that Stacy would’ve won at least one championship before she left, and the same with Torrie Wilson.

    Jakey Reply:

I would have enjoyed Stacy having the title, because instead it just made the booking of October 2004 ridiculous. She had three victories over Molly and lost to Trish in Manchester. A month later, the division was officially destoyed when Gail, Nidia and Jazz got released, and Stacy was jobbing to Christy Hemme in gimmick matches.

    Raekon Reply:

The reason she turned down the offer was because she actually had only learned to take bumps and could do some holds and a few kicks mainly.

Her booking in this match was still good so she could utilize the few things that she can and her great character helped aswell.

However, as a champ she would had to bring more in ring ability on the table and that was something she wouldn’t had been able to deliver as believable as the other girls that were on the roster at that time.

Of course she could had still grabbed the opportunity and “run” with it anyway but she wasn’t a selfish person to do so and rather were thinking what would had been the best for the division.

Unfortunately the management destroyed the division once again through all the releases back then only because they didn’t even knew what they should do with the women on the roster. :(

    Jake Reply:

She could do more than that tho. Just watch her old WCW matches. I think she really underrated herself, imo.

    Choko Reply:

No, RAKEON. She didn’t say that. She said that there were more deserving girls in the division who had worked harder than her.

  3. I’m glad stacy turned down winning the womens championship in this match because she didn’t have the drive to be even a decent wrestler…i also was surprised by molly’s legs she had some nice legs…

    Jcott3 Reply:

I think that’s the reason so many fans think she would have been more successful in WWE if she had come in as Mona (complete with mini-dress and bare feet) instead of becoming Molly Holly.

    art Reply:

Maybe but the times she showed her legs i was surprised how good her body looked….i think she wanted to prove she could actually wrestle over showing her body, which probably hindered her abit…..

I like that Molly had the most conservative outfit, yet she was wearing heels coming down the ramp. Haha, little things

  5. flash1086

lol. Trish was a heel yet the fans still loved her. XD

It was kind of weird seeing Jazz in one of these eye candy gimmicky matches:/

    ajfan83 Reply:

Molly too. Jazz would be fired shortly after this, and Molly would quit about six months later. WWE destroyed the division in record time.

    perceval Reply:

You think that’s weird, look up “Divas South of the Border,” with Jazz running around exotic Mexican resorts in skimpy bikinis. And still being very much Jazz.

This was right in the middle of the so-called “golden age”, when everyone supposedly took the divas seriously as wrestlers. I even remember one of the video games had a match where you had to build a meter that allowed you to pull an article of clothing off once it was filled. And the only weapon avalabile was a heart shaped pillow…

Let’s just say this era of womens wrestling is greatly romanticized by some people. The divas were more popular, yes, but so was WWE as a whole.

Agree with the first part, disagree with the latter. 2004 was a bad year business-wise for WWE. The PPV being discussed here had less than 4,000 people in attendance, and Survivor Series the next month only drew around 7,000 people in a building that could hold 17,000.

Things were pretty bad during the first couple years of the brand split, and business didn’t pick up until the rise of John Cena and Batista in 2005. Ever since then, business has been better than it was in 2002-04.

    ajfan83 Reply:

Actually, you’re right. What I should have said is the roster was more over as a whole. People up and down the card got good reactions, nowadays only the top guys do. The diva division is totally dependent on how over the rest of the roster is.

    ajfan83 Reply:

I also think some people overrate how famous the divas from this era are. Would anyone outside of the wrestling world know who Molly, Victoria, or Jazz are? How about Lita, for that matter? The only three that attainted a decent amount of fame are Trish, Torrie, and Stacy. The later two mostly for who they are dating, and Trish only because she’s done a ton of magazine covers and TV appearances. Sable and Chyna were real draws in wrestling. The rest… not so much.

    The K@rmic HeeL Reply:

AJ I’m sick and tired of your shit. That’s exactly what you do. Is shit all over anyone and everyone who disagrees with you. Here’s a newsflash for you, these women are respected because no matter the kind of match they were thrown in: they delivered in the WRESTLING department of it. They had a passion for wrestling and the fans identified with them through their characters they portrayed. Wrestling is show business and no kidding they’ll thrown in sexual elements…but nevertheless, you can’t one dimensonally look at an individual and attribute an ass or a pair of tits as the only reason to success. These women were more than that and they proved it with their work and even their own personal success outside of WWE. You’re obsessed with popularity contests. Pro wrestling fans and more specifically womens wrestling fans loved these girls, so fuck off.

    Clarke Reply:

um I’ve honestly never seen anyone on this site over-rated how famous the Golden Era Divas were…

and who gives a shit if nobody outside the wrestling fandom knows who these Divas are??? I’m pretty sure that The Undertaker, Rock, Steve Austin, John Cena, maybe Andre The Giant are the only wrestlers that are known outside of the wrestling world.

    Choko Reply:

Lol, at AJ being proven wrong and then changed the whole thing…

    ajfan83 Reply:

Look at that chump Karmic have a meltdown because I threw Lita’s name in there. I bet if I just bashed the rest he would have had nothing to say. And as far as fame goes, I could have just stuck to popularity, but I think they are one in the same. The “golden age” lasted for a little over two years, which as ChisP pointed out, were the two least profitable years for WWE over the last decade. This is important when certain morons pretend the divas were “upper card draws”, pointing to one novelty main event with Lita and Trish as proof they packed the stands. It’s a fantasy many on this site choose to embrace. These girls didn’t draw a dime. And if they were so memorable, you’d think a Trish or Lita could still get a decent reaction for their appearances. But they don’t. Imagine if Molly or Jazz made a cameo. You might literally hear crickets in the stands

Got to love you guys defending the credibility of this overrated era on a look back at a “Fulfill Your Fantasy” match. I’m sure people were watching for their fantastic skills, right?

    ajfan83 Reply:

    @Karmic

    “Personal success outside of WWE”

You mean like Stacy Keibler dating a movie star? Or Trish Stratus showing off her body in a new magazine every month? Because that sure proves they were popular for their wrestling skill, right?

damn wish the girls at my school looked like this!

  9. YouCanLookButYouCan'tTouch

Despite the wardrobe these girls had to wear, this was actually a really good battle royal. Just like everyone else, at one point I thought Stacy was gonna win the match. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if she had won the match to tell you the truth. In fact, I kind of wish Stacy could’ve won at least one championship before she left. Yes, she may not have been the best wrestler in the world female-wise, but she wasn’t terrible. Plus, she was very over with the crowd. And the same thing with Torrie Wilson.

    Jcott3 Reply:

I always thought Stacy had potential in the ring. But if you believe the things Ivory has said about Stacy and Torrie when they came into the WWF, they both had a lousy attitude towards learning how to work and just wanted to get by on their looks.

I’m not sure what would have happened if Stacy had become Women’s Champion. Based on the backlash Kelly Kelly got last year, Stacy may have been better off not holding the title.

    perceval Reply:

What would have happened was no Trish vs Lita.

As much as I like the girls in different looks, this match does not help the image of women wrestling whatsoever. It was the beginning of the end of the division with focus on eye candy.

    Jake Reply:

They did eye candy stuff way before this.

  12. I would have loved to see Stacy as champion, but i respect her decision to not win the title since she felt more athletic women deserved it more, I miss all the divas in this ring since half of them no longer wrestle!

  13. Deezo88

Damn, Trish really launched Molly towards the end. If Molly had flown any further, she’d have bypassed the protective mat, and ended up on the ramp. Also, is it just me, or is Victoria’s skirt actually more like that of a French maid, rather than a school girl?
