Today in History: Awesome Kong vs. Gail Kim in a No DQ Match at Final Resolution ’08

On this day in history:

January 6th, 2008 | Kicking off the year with a No DQ match for the Knockouts Title, champ Gail Kim took on a fierce challenger in Awesome Kong. The “No DQ” stipulation played to Kong’s advantage, and she spent much of the match tossing Gail around outside the ring. Once back in the ring, Gail managed to survive a chokeslam, kicking out of a close pin before surprising Kong with a roll-up pin, winning the match and retaining her title. As would be expected, Awesome Kong was not pleased with this, and it took an army of officials and Knockouts to get Gail backstage safely.

Great match. I have a feeling we will get a match like this soon between 2 women on T.V. I wont be as good but it’ll be a No DQ probably.

I used to love how the Knockouts matches were always filled with stipulations (from the debut of the Knockouts division until perhaps mid 2011). Some might argue that there were too many gimmick matches, but personally I’d rather have too many than too little.

Nowadays the Knockout matches are usually either straight singles or straight tag with not much variety week to week except a slightly different rotation of the 7 or whatever women on the roster (not to mention very minimal storylines).

It’s not like the Knockouts’ matches are bad or anything. On the contrary they’ve been consistently good as of late. But no matter how good the wrestling is, people are going to get bored of the same matchups again and again, which is exactly what gimmick matches tend to get used for (to help elevate and progress a feud to the next level and keep it interesting). Of course the Knockout ‘feuds’ at the moment aren’t very defined.

I think the Knockouts always seemed like a bigger deal when they got all the match types that traditionally were reserved for the men. So I just hope we begin to see table/ladder/.etc matches again at some point in the near future (I suppose its a guarantee we’ll at least get a cage match for Lockdown, although hopefully Velvet won’t be involved in it).

This was the defining feud of the KO division imo. And with the exception of Mickie and Tara’s feud in late 2011, I don’t think any other one has matched its intensity.

Definitely one of the best Knockouts matches ever. They had everything, the storyline, the atmosphere and the crowd, not to mention the brutality shown by these two.

  • Gail-Trish-Maryse

No “underdog” storyline will ever be able to live up to this.
That’s why I don’t really want to see Kharma back in WWE unless it’s against Beth or Nattie. Because WWE would never be able to do something this good.

  • Getdownwithachola

Screw Trish/Lita fued this was the best mainstream women wrestling fued ever IMO.

    • NY Pollard

The wrestling was superior, but I still think Lita/Trish is the best of all time.

  • Essex Boy

Probably my favourite women’s wrestling fued I’ve witnessed in mainstream wrestling.

  • TheGamergirl22

    Epic match

  • Jamal

Love how the match allows Gail to win without killing Kong’s steam. This was an epic feud. Was so sad WWE never went there even once
