On this day in history:
January 8th, 2006 | A lengthy, one-sided infatuation with Women’s Champion Trish Stratus led Mickie James to a title shot at 2006′s New Year’s Revolution. She took it to be friendly competition, but Trish was all business, perhaps hoping to snap Mickie out of her obsession. Unfortunately for her, though, the match only worsened it–Mickie seemed to get a perverse satisfaction out of performing Trish’s moves on her. In the end, Trish won the match with a Chick Kick, retaining her title and leaving a hurt (both physically and emotionally) Mickie behind her.

I loved the backstage confrontation between Trish and Lita, that stare down planted the seeds for the final Trish and Lita fued and Lita vs Mickie James. I get all teary thinking how great the division and the women used to be.
WWE really dropped the ball with the likes of Candice, Mickie and Melina, they all had the charisma and talent to create another golden age. Making Michelle McCool a top diva was also one of the great falls of the division.

Fully agree Choko.
The girls you named weren’t blonde after all and Vince had the blonde obsession so Michelle was the next “best choice” for him. -.-
Don’t wanna take anything away from Michelle cause she honestly worked her butt off and improved a lot turning into a great wrestler.
However, Melina, Mickie and Candice got the best reactions in the whole division at their time while Michelle got little to no reaction at all.
Heck even Maria and Ashley got better and more reactions because both girls oozed charisma.

with divas like kaitlyn, aj ,paige, and natalya they could easily recreate that.

That Chick Kick was….. DAMN!!!!!!

Mickie was great. Loved how basically the crowd turned her face. They just loved her. I’ll never understand why WWE would let her go. She was keeping the division alive along with few others…who are now also gone.

Wasn’t it about Batista posting her naked pics all over the lockerroom and then demanding she get fired or he’d quit? I think that’s what I read, but ofcourse it could all be BS. Supposedly she was habitually late too.

I think it was because WWE wanted to move to a new direction with their women’s division. They wanted storylines with more Maryse more Michelle more Layla exc. So there was no place for Mickie

They’re fools. Really they are. They possibly become too out of tune with the audience because Mickie and Melina were clearly getting more reactions than the other women – and now the women who are Mickie, Victoria/Tara, and Tessmacher and Velvet are bringing the ratings, which is a big FU to the idiots at WWE.

It was more Batista then the direction of the division Mickie could of still fit in the division.

I think it might be a combo between Mickie wanting to have a music career, her “fatness” & maybe the fact that they wanted to dumb down their division…which now I think they’re trying to mend.

Love this match, so damn intense. They were hitting some of the stiffest shots I’ve ever seen in a women’s match. And that kick at the end was brutal, you could hear her pop her on the head lol

True that. I remember loving this match in a way, somewhat better than Wrestlemania because the ending wasn’t botched. This was a dramatic encounter with intense fighting and two beautiful girls – perfect!
I also like the backstage interaction for Lita/Trish. I don’t think it planted the seeds though because it was simply a teaser. The final Lita/Trish rivalrly was slight and not as big as it should have been. Orton, Cena and DX were hogging all the attention at the time, so its a wonder these two managed to have storyline at all.

Trish Stratus had so many rivals in her career: Lita, Stephanie, Jazz, Molly, Victoria, and Mickie. I think it was the all the different oppositions and styles that helped mold Trish into a legend! Mickie was an interesting one because she’s was the one that ultimately went over Trish! I wonder how women like Melina, Beth, Candice, and Michelle’s career’s would have been like had Trish stayed around to put them over the same way Trish put Mickie over! This is why I think John Cena needs a Mickie James like rival to go over him because that would automatically create a new big star the same way Trish helped bring Mickie up to stardom!

CM Punk went over him no? I’m so tired of Cena. And if these women make an appearance (well Trish), I have no problems. People bitch wayyyyy tooo damn much! She makes 2 appearances a year and they’re already sick of it? Talk about ungrateful peeps. I welcome ALL former divas to make cameos or one night deals, screw the haters.

Cena already put that guy over. He’s the current WWE champion.

Trish is awesome and so is Mickie that kick popped Mickie’s head off haha!!
And choko maybe I’m biased but Michelle McCool was awesome. She kept the division alive on Smackdown, improved herself to help the less experienced divas like Maryse, Maria, Eve and Layla, put on one of the best fueds ever with Melina and Natalya.. And more importantly she put on great matches as always. Despite “lack of charisma” or crowd reactions, Michelle was intense in the ring and it was her wrestling that did the talking. U can’t tell me u weren’t entertained at home watching mcCool kick some ass meanwhile the crowd was dead..
And Trish your awesome can never get enough of u or Lita or any of the past girls!

Ryan, I totally agree. While there’s no denying McCool was vanilla in personality, her wrestling more than made up for it. She was intense and became such a magnificent wrestler, you’d think she came from the indies. While sitting and watching at home, I was always entertained when Michelle wrestled. I love it when she took on Tiffany for example, it was short but sweet. Very intense. That’s why I have my own personal fantasy matches that I never saw like McCool vs Jackie or her facing Roxxi Laveu and Angelina Love. My own personal fantasy matches ill never get to see :’(

Michelle vs Trish was really good!! But the crowd wa dead haha.. Smh
Michelle vs Molly
Michelle was so versatile she could do her good guy move set and her bad guy move set both were smooth and done to perfection!! It’s all good we all have our dream matches for instance Trish vs Sable never happened :(
And I always felt a good match could of been Candice vs McCool!

Hell yea! Candice vs Michelle would have been amazing! Candice would have benefited greatly working with Michelle, she would have been more refined and less sloppy. Molly is also a great match. Great ideas

I’ll always remember when Mickie debuted. It was after Trish beat Tara and After Tara attacked Trish and then Ashley (did ashley really think she was gonna save somebody) then Mickie came out and saved both of them. At first I was like is this Melina because her hair was that same color at the time and Mickie was wearing a Melina type outfit. Anyway the match was awesome. There is no doubt in my mind that when Lita and Trish Left the torch was passed to her. Trish was awesome as always. Around this time she had long prooved that she was a solid wrestler and could be taken seriously. Love both these girls.

You could already see the crowd siding with Mickie. No official face change was ever needed. Trish was never very convincing as a babyface. Mickie was also younger and more exciting at the time. And, of course, the lesbian aspect. WWE really should have saw the Wrestlemania fan revolt coming.

Hi.! I’ve always been looking for your comments in every post even though you always seem to be brutally honest.. :) i want to know exactly if you ever saw Trish as a convincing heel.? :)

She was a great heel. As a face she was bland and forgettable. Sort of like HHH. What’s funny is Trish has shown she can be funny and likeable in real life interviews. She just never showed it as a babyface in WWE. Her persona was not really any different than Torrie/Stacy/Kelly. The super hottie that smiles a lot. I think that’s why her returns don’t really excite the crowd anymore. She doesn’t stand out from the crowd.

Trish was a convincing Face of course it your way to come in a post and dis Trish. But i do think i agree with what you said about Mickie she was fresh and new. Plus again Mickie had a following from her indy, ROH,TNA,and OVW time also which when she debuted they saw her and followed her still.

And of course it’s your way to constantly come to her aid like a white knight. She wasn’t a great face character. I never heard huge pops for her entrance and I never heard a single crowd chant “Trish”, outside of her final match with Lita.
Why do you keep insisting that Mickie’s background meant anything to WWE fans? It might have got her some cheers in Chicago, because that Wrestlemania crowd had a lot of hardcore wrestling nerds, but the average WWE fan doesn’t even know what ROH is. Mickie got over for a few reasons. She had an entertaining character, she was outwrestling the other divas, and she was going against a beyond stale Trish character that most fans were sick of by that point. Trish was becoming Cena and if she didn’t quit when she did the boos would have become a more regular occurence. Just look at the cheers Edge got for spearing her and Orton with the RKO.

ajfan83 Reply:

For her characters sake, probably. But I think WWE did it because her and Lita were the top two divas, Lita was a huge heel, and they didn’t have any decent faces left. Plus they wanted someone that could work with newcomers like Mickie and Melina, so Trish turning face made sense, on paper. The problem is her face turn was never explained and the fans were never as enthusiastic about her as WWE (and some people on this site) thought she was.

This was the night Edge cashed in his MITB contract, and next night on RAW him and Lita had a live sex celebration:)

One of my favorite storylines (:

Hey also I liked how Lita and Trish bumped into one another.. A year before this, Trish destroyed Lita when Lita’s kneecap exploded. I liked how Trish had a guilty look on her bumping into Lita.
Also I remember going to a house show and Lita teamed with Victoria against Mickie and Trish.. Gotta say I was incredibly disappointed by all 4… Lita was doing her usual hair pull, punching and kicking of Trish and Mickie and Tara was doing her usual spider web, hair pull, and missed Moonsault and that’s it. Trish saves the match with an obvious incredibly predictable move set.

Well Lita has only been a heel once. THOUGH she did still keep the litacarana and the litasault in her arsenal, she became an interesting heel with less moves and more submission holds.

Well yeah he was only heel once.. When I saw her team with Victoria she was allready heel it was back in I want to say January 2006. She kept the Moonsault but only used it towards the end of her contract against Trish an Mickie and also the Litacarana she used it on Edge by accident which actually got me excited seeig her still pull that move off after YEARS! :)
But trust me the match I saw was totally lack luster by ALL 4 women. I mean hell we all have out bad days

That’s nice of you. I would have excused them too, seeing them alone would be such a treat. And some people might say that the women didn’t put asses in seats, but they sure did. I bought my tickets to see Lita and Trish – then there was everyone else. Its not only one person selling tickets I know. It is the whole show, everyone contributes and the divas of the time helped persuade me to buy tickets. So they did sell them with me atleast.

loved this match my two all time favorite going at it. Also loved Joey Styles or Coach’s comment cant remember who it was that said this was one of the most hard hitting women matches.
