Former WWE star Kharma, aka Amazing Kong, will face off against Mia Yim in her SHIMMER return in April.

Kong, who left WWE last year, has been off the market while several young names have emerged on the independents over the past couple of years, including Yim, which makes this match a pretty exciting one.

Yim laid down the challenge in a video and it was accepted by the former TNA Knockouts Champion. Yim cited that she had spent months training in Japan, like Kong, and was ready to face her one-on-one.

The challenge is set for SHIMMER Volume 53, which will take place April 6th at the Meadowlands Exposition Center for WrestleCon in Secaucus, NJ.

Watch the clip below:

Also on the show will be:

* Saraya Knight defending her SHIMMER Championship against Cheerleader Melissa in a Steel Cage Match.
* Ayako Hamada vs. Athena
* The return of Madison Eagles
* The debut of Evie

SHIMMER 53 will be one of several live pro wrestling events that weekend at the Meadowlands Exposition Center as part of WrestleCon. After the SHIMMER event on April 6th, there will also be full events promoted by both CHIKARA and Dragon Gate USA at the same location.

    The Saraya vs Melissa cage match actually sounds like something I’d pay for.

    kharma has been on almost every indy promotion card for the last 5 to 6 months she starting to become a little stale

    She faces different opponents everytime. And i doubt there are people who watched ALL her matches since her return. So how can she possibly be stale? In WWE and TNA you see the same women every single week, so by that logic they should all be stale as well.

    Kong’s first independent wrestling appearance since leaving WWE was at SHINE in November(and the night before at a show in Florida).
    So how exactly has she been on ‘every indy promotion card for the last 5 to 6 months’?.
    So explain to me how she has gotten stale in that time???

    HUH??? she’s wrestled 4 matches since leaving WWE.

    Kong & Jazz vs Mercedes & Rain
    Kong and Jazz vs Made in Sin
    Kong vs Darcy Dixon
    Kong vs Mercedes Martinez

    I don’t think that’s EVERY card…..

    I wish I could attend SHIMMER 53. So far, it sounds like it can be one of their best shows yet.

    The problem with Kong’s matches is that they can be too formulaic. Certainly during her time in Shimmer, they basically fell into two categories. Against lower card wrestlers, it would be a standard one-sided squash. These matches served to maintain Kong’s reputation as an unstoppable monster heel, and so add more drama to the only other kind of match she had; the plucky underdog tries and (usually) fails to defeat her.

    These matches all followed much the same routine. They’d open with a few minutes of Kong no-selling her opponent’s attacks, whilst intermittently knocking said opponent on their butt with a clothesline or shoulder-charge. Eventually, her opponent would get Kong down with a big move and would take control maybe with one or two more big spots before Kong would stop them cold again. And then this pattern would basically be repeated a few times until Kong won (with one or two exceptions).

    Perhaps if Kong retains her face status, as she currently is in Shine (and as she very briefly was on her last Shimmer appearance), I guess we might see something different in her next match against a heel. But in a face vs face match, I get the feeling this will be business as usual.

    It would be stupid if she would sell everything her opponent do to her. Plus it would look less realistic since she is twice the size of many SHIMMER talent also don’t forget she was trained in Japan so she is automatically tougher than most US female talent.

    BTW I remember during her BP feud when she faced Velvet and Madison in a handicap match and won like in a minute after that Velvet freaking knocks her on her knees with one forearm club to the back I was like WTF that crap looked so unrealistic :/ Sadly I have yet to burn this image off my mind :(

    Both Kong and Yim are two very dynamic performers, so I’m hoping that this encounter is more of a vehicle to put on a wrestling clinic rather than underselling Yim’s showstopping skills.

    oh, didn’t know that SHIMMER moved out of The Eagles Club for their Volumes now, good news!!

    Mikas Reply:

    It’s for the Wrestlecon event, the regular tapings are still in the Eagles Club. But it’s nice for some variety, and this WrestleCon has room for a cage, which the Eagles club doesnt have.

    JD Sensations Reply:

    oh, are they taping 4 Volumes at the Meadowlands Center?

    I hope they do more tapings out of Berwyn though, they could get bigger crowds, and of course, in this case, room for a cage.
